After the holy bible gigs and seeing this in front of your eyes it's insane how he carries this through mid set. So so underrated, just how we like it.
The most important song in my life, because it makes me think, and I mean think about the nature of humanity. I’ve come to see nature as a relatively simple thing to get your head around, but humans have decided to step away from that. This song is the best song I’ve ever heard. Saved my life as many times as it’s brought it to the edge of indifference. Thanks to the maniacs, and to Richie in particular.
Thanks for the video! I've always wanted to see how James manages the solo live. And he just does it, no problem. The best guitar player ever. He's also the best singer ever. Wonder what that feels like?
Remember this well, Really was the highlight of the festival that year. I also remember getting absolutely soaked from the stage crew lobbing cups of water over the crowd every 5 seconds.
The way he holds it with just one electric guitar is phenomenal. Playing this song at Glastonbury (!) is just amazing. What a band, still love them these decades later.
James's talent does not lie in his solos, nothing at all wrong with them like. he could kick my arse in a jam off. it the fact he can play some of those really off beat guitar riff, and sing really confused timing vocals over it.... effortlessly, a truly under rated musician. people hear holy bible and think ritchy, yes ritchy did right amazing lyrics, but from what ive seen.... its not in any real kind of song format. james turns it all into what we hear at the end of the day
@nasalscarecrow You remember correctly. They changed it slightly in 2004, and James did the first verse and chorus on his own, with the band kicking in on the start of Verse 2. It sounded amazing.
As sublime as JDB's guitar playing is on this, I think Sean's drumming behind the guitar solo is perfect. I swear he's a human metronome as his gradual increase in the pace is done so well; it takes at least 30-40 seconds to realise what's happening because he is flawless.
No, I don't think that was one of Richey's guitars. It's a Fender Telecaster custom, one of three that James has. He also has a black one, a Red one and a blonde one. James still has Richey's thinline Telecaster and used it on Kevin Carter among other songs, usually tuned to open G.
This video has something for everyone! The more high-minded get Archives of Pain with all the Manics at the top of their musical game. For those at the shallower end of the pool, there's JDB at the height of his podginess and Nicky Wire in camouflage AS WELL AS a skirt. Couldn't ask for more...
He used a '72 Tele in Natural Finish. He also used a black Les Paul Studio and has also been seen with a Goldtop LP (Suicide Is Painless, TOTP). "Used" - For want of a better word. I suppose the more appropriate term is "posed with"!
So you slag a band you don't even know off for petty reasons in an attempt to get one up on me? You moron. At least I don't like Pendulum AFTER hearing them.

He's just as good live as on record. Such a rare thing for a singer.

my first Manics gig, and they played this BEAST. I didnt know how lucky I was
How do you write something like that? How do you know come up with a solo like that? Absolute genius.
From my own experience, it happens spontaneously.
'Not punish less, rise the pain' sounds just like it does on the bible, and the solo is almost identical, JDB you hero!
Love it when he goes like ALL I PREACH IS EXTINCTION

I REALLY WANT TO SEE THEM LIVE . It’s almost 30 years since holy bible .. surely they will do a tour in celebration playing the songs from the album 😯

Perfect! If only they would still come up with these more abrasive moments, rather than the more whimsical affairs of late...
nick said if an x-factor winner ever covers a MSP song - this would be the one!!!
Gosh, it's in moments like these I go back to loving them like i used to when i was in my teens!:)
chills every time at "STERILIZE RAPISTS!"
Such a good, searing song
Coming back in 2020.....
The '72 Tele is indeed stunning but for me you just can't beat JDB's Alpine White LP! =P
Awesome loved to have been at this GiG 🏴
Manic Street Preacher's are the perfect musical machine.

This performance kicks fucking ass.
I know he must have played this a hundred times, but the easiness and the way he feels his guitar keep amazing me with every listening!
great solo in the end, love it
same with his guitar, the guy's so underrated, i know he's influenced by slash and all but i'd say that he's better than him
AWESOME..
Best band in the world.
I keep coming back for more...
@VivNick08 I always thought it was "Oh YEAHHHH"...now that you mention it, i think it IS "WIRE!!" hahahha...
Genial, qué guitarra. Increible.
@nasalscarecrow

Not to mention being an all-round nice guy!

thankyou thankyou thankyou! I lost my video with this performance on, i was there!
God I love playing that solo! Hope they play this on the new tour, not just Everything Must Go.
this shouldve been a singal on holy bible
Richeys pro death penalty song.... its hard to argue against these words really
i was at this gig amazing...never seen this video b4

JDB is God

Some very nice member on Forever Delayed uploaded the entire Reading 2001 show.

as akilla!
wot a tune!
See Sean is wearing his beret from the Holy Bible
want!
I can only say: "Bravo!"
Best argument for capital punishment I know of.
i wonder who you think you are
this is the centrepiece of The Holy Bible
dark beauty
Has James’s Telecaster got a trem system on it? I can’t quite see.
No, but it has got a Seymour duncan in the bridge pickup
epic!
I loved JDB's porky era
Is that one of Richey's guitars?
the entire show? do you have them on here
Tongue in cheek comments come accross poorly on the internet, I'm affraid.
lol!!!!
Sounds good but know your better and achieve of all.
tell me what type of music ur into, cause u jst carnt slag of the manics and give no reasons or say what music ur into
so why are u slagging them off when u dont even know anythin about them, and have no reason
he said milosovic the second time through the chorus. oh well.
So you slag a band you don't even know off for petty reasons in an attempt to get one up on me?
You moron. At least I don't like Pendulum AFTER hearing them.
LOL. Pendulum fanboy.
A few minor mistakes in his solo but still the bollocks.
Have you heard that solo? I'd like to hear you do better..
