I was pretty green with evap before but have been forcing myself to learn. I definitely had a stage 5, maybe more since I was getting gas spilling out. My dad’s car has this stage 5 clicker issue too so I appreciate this video. His is an 05 Mustang. He was told a spider might have got down the fuel neck and you mentioned spider webs could be a culprit blocking the air to fuel ratio when at the pump, so my question is how do spiders get in there? I’m guessing they got on the gas pump nossel and then forced into the fuel neck of the car 🤷🏻♂️
Hello, That's a great question! Most of the spider webs I've seen blocking systems have been at the filter side of the system. So they didn't have to crawl to far to cause an issue. If there was a restriction at the fuel neck that's a bit tougher. But they are pretty sneaky! ~Ryan
Ha...What kind of smoke are you forcing on them duckies.? Lol Whatever it is...You've got one duck upside down now. 🤣🐤 Great to see another video from Master Mike. Awesome Buddy.! 😎👍
Try dealing with this in -20f with windchill and a monster '05 Yukon! I guess my wife doesn't mind as I always make sure she has gas to shuttle the kiddos around. Pretty common issue on that era of GM trucks.
My 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee has this type of issue. I simply turn the nozzle 360 degrees and it fills no problem at all. I found this trick in reading various Jeep forums online.
I've had to do this for my 05 Mustang, but I only have to rotate the bottom of the pump nozzle counterclockwise to the 2 or 3 o'clock position. Yes, it does work.
I blew air into my tank and fixed it 6 months ago. I figured it might clear the filter.. it worked. It also caused the tank to read full for some reason. The air fixed that also?
Hey Ryan, thanks for watching! I like to think of my duckies like the birds in the mineshafts. Didn't they use them to ensure the air is ok in the mineshaft, right? My upside duckies have confirmed I wouldn't want to live inside that gas tank hhahah! Mike Becker, Senior Instructor
Great video. My 2500 savana is having same issue. When trying to fill gas , the gas station pump handle doesn't click but gas just spills out from filler neck after only a few dollars. I've checked all items by watching your video. All looks good. Also the car's gas gauge always shows full even when empty. Can a bad sending unit be the culprit? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
@@GoTechTraining Hi Michael, all well here and with my friend in Texas!! Love the bite size information. Been a bit out of the loop, but will check in more. Wishing you and yours a blessed day.
Why I love older cars .they don't have sealed system . So basically the vent valve could be stuck, or the charcoal from the canister could be plugging the vent hose. Usually these components are above the fuel tank and frame, very difficult to access
Yes Juan, in a normal EVAP system that's the case. Chrysler uses and ESIM system on here without a traditional vent. Most of the evap components on this one are located in the wheel well. ~Mike
Great video and everything makes since. However I have one question. My mechanic who has done great work for me in the past ran some tests and couldn’t find an issue with the EVAP system. They are telling me the issue is with the fuel pump. I can’t find anything that supports that diagnosis. Do you feel a fuel pump can cause a fuel fill issue as such?
Hello, Even though your vehicle is different, the EVAP system type is the same, the lay out is just a bit different. If you can access the canister, ESIM and Filter which are located on the fuel tank behind a metal shield. Start by check the Filter and ESIM for restrictions. If none are found, I would remove the canister and check for is being plugged or restricted. I hope this helps! Thanks for reaching out! ~Ryan Wilsing
Mike….great explanation….my problem on my 2004 gmc pickup is just the opposite…gas nozzle won’t shut off no matter what station i go to…any trouble shooting tips u cd gv me would b greatly appreciated
Hey Kyle, that tells me that the filler necks not building pressure like it should be when the tank is full. Is the filler neck in good shape, not rusted out? Mike Becker, Senior Instructor
This issue happened to previous owner after he had tank replaced…no one cd figure it out…now i hv had the truck for 4yrs and also had to hv the tank replaced due to an auto body welding accident…problem followed tank replacement.
Two questions: First, enhanced EVAP has been out for years so why recently having problems, or has this problem been around for awhile? Second, can this cause the gas pump nozzle to NOT shut off when fuel tank is full. I have a 2019 Transit 250 with under 10K miles and when I was topping off the tank after the nozzle shut off the nozzle did not shut off the second time but let gas back flow out the filler.
Hey Hiker Biker, thanks for watching! This has been a an issue for a while now. It mostly depends on the design of the system and it's ability to overcome pressure issues in the tank. As for the nozzle not clicking after it's clicked once, that's likely because pressure didn't build up in the already full filler neck, leading to gas spilling out. If the nozzle clicks off and you don't have a restriction, the tank is full. Don't top off as it can cause issues in the system. Mike Becker, Senior Instructor
96 ram 1500 doing the same thing. I’m thinking replacing the canister cause I’ve put a new purge selinoid on and it’s still not removing air from the gas tank
Hi Gregory, A quick test you could do, is disconnect the breather hose from the tank to canister and see if you can fill it with gas. If you can, it has to be a restricted EVAP canister or something down the line of the canister, like a LDP or it's filter. Thanks for watching! ~Ryan Wilsing
Hi! I have a 2005 Dodge Durango which like a lot of owners of the same vehicle, spills fuel when filling. I noticed the vent pipe to have like a trap before exiting on the filling neck. Do you think that's the flaw on design for this vehicle? I was thinking of replacing it with another brand filler neck; what do you think? Thanks!
Hey Mauricio, thanks for watching! The intended vent path of the system during refueling is through the NVLD assembly. It has a check valve that opens at 0.01 PSI to allow the fuel tank to breathe through the canister through the NVLD and out to atmosphere when refueling. Check out the hoses and path from the canister to the NVLD and through the NVLD filter assembly, if there is one. ~Mike
My 2015 mini Cooper is doing this and I'm figuring it's the EVAP thing but I don't know where or who can fix it without it costing an arm and leg. Is there anything I can put in the tank or it has to be token apart like you did
Hello Lala, Unfortunately there is no additive that will fix this issue, the restriction or vent issue will need to be fixed. Thanks for reaching out! ~Ryan
Good video mike! I got a Subaru on my lift for the same issue and a P1449. I can suck through the port on the LDP but I can’t blow through it. (Port that goes to the filter box). I disconnected the port on the LDP coming from the canister to rule it out. And still can’t blow through the LDP. Safe to say the LDP has failed ?
Hey George, thanks for watching! Hmm usually the LDPs have an over pressure valve. If you can't blow through it, maybe that valve is stuck? What year/model/engine Subbie? I can take a look at the system. Mike Becker, Senior Instructor
From what i'm seeing there's a "drain separator" attached to the LDP. Not sure what it is and the info is really vague, but make sure that's not plugged up. If you can detatch the LDP from the canister and go to the station to refuel and your issues solved, then i'd be ok with the LDP getting replaced. Mike Becker, Senior Instructor
I have a similar problem but it comes and goes. When the check engine light comes on I can’t put gas in my 2003 SLS GMC. I am replacing the fuel pump tomorrow so need to look at this charcoal exchange filter systems. Could it be the solenoid?
Hey Kzilla12, most cars have rollover valves. Toyota uses vacuum pump systems on a bunch of their vehicles. A restriction in that outlet path would cause the same issue! Mike Becker, Senior Instructor
I feel that if your pump shuts off at $28 .60 and you are trying to top it off to an even $30, all of the excess fuel could work it's way into the vent lines. So once it stops, that's it don't force more fuel into it.
It can also work its way into the canister as well. When it shuts off, it's done, don't try filling more...unless theres an issue like this car had ~mike
Hi, Mike! My 06 V6 Jeep Liberty has to problem accepting fuel but it is late in auto shutoff and burps up a tablespoon or two of fuel. I mitigate this manually guessing it's close to full and slowing the flow. I don't have a smoke machine but could this be the same solution? Take the canister out and and clean it? It's got 175k miles.
Hey Paul, thanks for watching dude! It sounds like the system is building up pressure and burping back. I'd start by making sure there's good flow through the system, just like we did here. Mike Becker, Senior Instructor
Hey Volfan, it could be. Because of the design of this system it may not set a check engine light for a restriction unless it's really really bad. ~Mike
Need help! my S10 through the center hose on the fuel tank dumps liquid fuel out the vent on the charcoal canister! it is supposed to be a vapor vent I think. I just replaced the fuel pump in this truck. I have the bed off the truck and it is easy to fix whatever is wrong that is causing the flow to dump from the tank but I dont have any idea why it is happening. I took the foam filter out and cleaned it and also the rubber hose from the charcoal filter to the vent .they both were filthy with road dust but DRY. IT IS A LITTLE PLASTIC box with a foam filter insidet hat comes from the charcoal filter.
Hi I have the same issue, but it show check engine line on, do you think this can cause error code 455 456 457 ? By any chance do you have a video explaining how to test the charcoal canister & selenoide ? Thank you
Hey brother Thank you for all your hard work!! I’m wondering if you could give me hand? 2013 fusion 1.6 code P0144c n P0455. I’ve replace the canister purge and I still have the codes pop up. No problems fueling and starting and running. I’m at super lost. I don’t what else it could be??! Thank you again for you videos bro!!
Hi Mike, great video! My 2007 MDX is a stage 3 clicker. It can accept gas for the most part. But the pump always shutoff 1-2 gallons short. Previously the fuel gauge can rise slightly above full mark. Now it points to the full mark exactly. What might be the cause of it? Thanks.
Hey Wei Su, thanks for watching! That's interesting. How do you know its short? The tank will usually hold at least a gallon even if it reads empty. Mike Becker, Senior Instructor
@@GoTechTraining Previously the pointer of the fuel gauge can go beyond 'full mark' a lilttle when it is really full. Now the pointer will point at 'full mark' exactly. So I know it is 1-2 gallons short. Also previously the fuel gauge will stay above or at 'full' for quite a while after a fuel-up. Now it starts dropping right after I leave gas station. This is quite annoying.
Hi mike I have that same problem with my 2010 Tahoe and I replaced both my charcoal canister and canister vent valve solenoid and it didn’t fix the issue what could be the problem?
Hey Cris214, whats going on with it? It's a hard to fill issue? It's possible there could be a stuck relief valve on the tank or a restriction of the filler neck vent. ~Mike
@@GoTechTraining yes can’t fuel up correctly the pump stops itself every few seconds and I’ve seen many videos all of them explained it could be the charcoal canister or the evap solenoid and I replaced both and the problem didn’t get fixed
Hello, It can turn on the check engine light, if it affects the EVAP system and its ability to vent. But in this case the check engine light was not on. Thanks for reaching out! ~Ryan
I've had this problem for about a year now. First it started that the car wouldn't take gas and I'd have to spend five minutes filling it up. Now its worse, same initial problem, but, when it gets below a quarter of a tank, the engine starts running really rough at idle and acceleration from stop and if I don't relieve the pressure and put more gas in the car, I'll foul a plug and eventually a coil. So..... Since I'm living in poverty and food is my priority, not fixing my car. (Unfortunately I live in my car) I found that if I keep the engine running when I'm pumping gas in the car, then leave my gas cap off and drive it for about 5 or 10 minutes. That helps. I then put the cap back on and drive normally until im at 1/4 tank again and then i repeat what i just said. Do you have any suggestions for folks who cant afford mechanic work with this issue? 😓🤷. Thanks. Sorry to bother you.
Huh, I have this problem on *some* pumps on my diesel car. I assume diesels also have this system? Why would it only happen on some pumps though? Just an early/borderline case?
Hey VorpalGun, diesel is a whole other animal. I don't want to put my foot in my mouth but I believe there are different flow rate diesel pumps at different stations. Some smaller light duty cars can't accept the high flow rate of the pump. They weren't designed to handle that much incoming fuel. Mike Becker, Senior Instructor
@@GoTechTraining Thanks for the quick and informative answer! I have a Subaru Outback 2011 specifically (we got diesel variants of those here in EU). One pump at a gas station will work while another (identical looking) at the same station won't. Super confusing. This has happened at multiple different stations and different franchises of gas stations too. As for flow rates there is always a button to enable high flow, I have not used that. I have not seen any other signage indicating different pump rates. Sometimes there is a separate truck pump that is not under the main roof (to allow full size lorries to fit). Those have a wider diameter on the pipe that goes into the car, and won't even fit on a normal car. From some googling it seems that diesel evaporates much more slowly and thus the system is different, apparently on some older cars at least they just have vent line(s) and roll over valve(s). I have not found the details for my car though. Presumably it must still have *something* to let the air out while refuelling and let air back in as fuel is used up. I guess the chance of such a setup getting plugged in some way is much smaller, but probably non-zero still.
I've had this problem on my 2001 Dodge ram. I tried pouring in by hand but then it tends to burp and come back out so it has to be poured in very very slowly. Takes me almost a half an hour to put in 10 gallons of gas
I've had this problem with my 05 Mustang, but I've managed to slow-fill the tank at the pump. I reverse my hand position on the pump nozzle, so that my pinkie finger is on the very tip of the nozzle lever. This gives me just the right amount of leverage to trickle in some gas without causing the pump to shut off. Fortunately, I only need to do this for a half minute or so, and then the pump works normally. Don't know why this is, but it works for my car.
On my 02 suburban, I have the "can't fill up my tank" issue and have replaced the gas cap, vaoor canister, purge solenoid, and vent valve. I STILL HAVE the same issue. No change. And tips?
How do I test the tank for a stuck valve? It was working since I last wrote, and now, all of a sudden, I have the issue again. I had to use two 5 gallon jugs to fill up the tank a little bit, just so I could drive it.😢
@GoTechTraining. Checked all hoses for restrictions and didn't find any. What I did find, is when I disconnected the vent hose from the tank (that connects to the filler neck), and shot some bursts of compressed air into, which actually inflated the fuel tank. When I stopped the compressed air, the air rushed back out of the vent hose I blew into. Is that normal ?
Is it dangerous to drive the vehicle with this problem? I still fill up my tank even though the pump stops multiple times, and I have a p0446 code. 04 Tahoe

Great job explaining everything
There is a anti siphon/roller over check valve on dodge vehicles that stick in the closed position where the fill neck connects to the tank

Try dealing with this in -20f with windchill and a monster '05 Yukon! I guess my wife doesn't mind as I always make sure she has gas to shuttle the kiddos around. Pretty common issue on that era of GM trucks.
Hey Larry, for sure it was! That's why they had the remote mount filter kit made for those trucks. The vent was soooo common to plug up.
~Mike
Thank you for showing us that, where get parts at? Keep up the good work
My 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee has this type of issue. I simply turn the nozzle 360 degrees and it fills no problem at all. I found this trick in reading various Jeep forums online.
That's interesting David! Wonder if they have a factory venting issue?
~Mike
I've had to do this for my 05 Mustang, but I only have to rotate the bottom of the pump nozzle counterclockwise to the 2 or 3 o'clock position. Yes, it does work.
Bro u deserve more subs
Thanks Hamod! I hope you are one now :)

I blew air into my tank and fixed it 6 months ago. I figured it might clear the filter.. it worked. It also caused the tank to read full for some reason. The air fixed that also?
Great video. I appreciate the details

Can you elaborate on the benefits to adding rubber duckies to your fuel tank?..asking for a friend..Haha! Great video, as always!
Hey Ryan, thanks for watching! I like to think of my duckies like the birds in the mineshafts. Didn't they use them to ensure the air is ok in the mineshaft, right? My upside duckies have confirmed I wouldn't want to live inside that gas tank hhahah!

Thank you.

You could also pull the air vent hose loose at gas station. Gas goes in,, filter.
Good video !
Having this issue with a 5th gen 2019 Ram 1500. Not sure what to check first. Any ideas are appreciated.
Hello,
Even though your vehicle is different, the EVAP system type is the same, the lay out is just a bit different.
Great video but what is this called? I mean what do you call this repair job and how much does it cost?
Hey Starflower,
On this particular vehicle the ESIM filter was replaced because it was full of dirt and plugged.

@@GoTechTraining yes filler tube is gd…had tank replaced last year..but problem followed the tank …cd their b any parts missing
This issue happened to previous owner after he had tank replaced…no one cd figure it out…now i hv had the truck for 4yrs and also had to hv the tank replaced due to an auto body welding accident…problem followed tank replacement.
Could it be that when the tank was installed a hose got pinched? Or maybe the wrong tank was installed?
Mike Becker, Senior Instructor

96 ram 1500 doing the same thing. I’m thinking replacing the canister cause I’ve put a new purge selinoid on and it’s still not removing air from the gas tank
Hi Gregory,
A quick test you could do, is disconnect the breather hose from the tank to canister and see if you can fill it with gas. If you can, it has to be a restricted EVAP canister or something down the line of the canister, like a LDP or it's filter.
Thanks for watching!
~Ryan Wilsing
Done that. Removed the filler neck and rigged up something to put gas directly into the tank and gas came out the vent side
I would suspect the fuel tank may have a roll over valve stuck.
~Ryan Wilsing
Excellent videos. Do you have any occasions to work on ram diesel 6.7L MAP, MAF sensors? I am looking forward to more great diagnosis.

My 2015 mini Cooper is doing this and I'm figuring it's the EVAP thing but I don't know where or who can fix it without it costing an arm and leg. Is there anything I can put in the tank or it has to be token apart like you did
Hello Lala,
Unfortunately there is no additive that will fix this issue, the restriction or vent issue will need to be fixed.
@@GoTechTraining it’s a 2014 crosstrek . I already cleaned out the filter and vent hoses but that didn’t do the trick
@@meorge9359 probably replace the filter too!

I have a similar problem but it comes and goes. When the check engine light comes on I can’t put gas in my 2003 SLS GMC. I am replacing the fuel pump tomorrow so need to look at this charcoal exchange filter systems. Could it be the solenoid?
On a Toyota vehicle with roll over Valve would it have the same concern of the pump clicking off
Hey Kzilla12, most cars have rollover valves. Toyota uses vacuum pump systems on a bunch of their vehicles. A restriction in that outlet path would cause the same issue!
Mike Becker, Senior Instructor
My crv does this now sometimes but if I just hold the gas pump at 90 degrees from how you'd normally put it in...it doesn't do any clicking.
I feel that if your pump shuts off at $28 .60 and you are trying to top it off to an even $30, all of the excess fuel could work it's way into the vent lines. So once it stops, that's it don't force more fuel into it.
It can also work its way into the canister as well. When it shuts off, it's done, don't try filling more...unless theres an issue like this car had

Could this be the case if it’s intermittent with no check engine light?
Hey Volfan, it could be. Because of the design of this system it may not set a check engine light for a restriction unless it's really really bad.
~Mike
the fuel pressure sensor can cause issues also ive read.?
Need help! my S10 through the center hose on the fuel tank dumps liquid fuel out the vent on the charcoal canister! it is supposed to be a vapor vent I think.
Hey Gustavo, something is bulding pressure inside the tank. Look for pinched hoses somewhere.

My Mazda 6 with full thank after 5/10 minutes of filling tank it leaks. Can it be the purge valve or the canister?

I wonder if maybe the fuel level sensor in the tank is starting to go bad?

Hello,
It can turn on the check engine light, if it affects the EVAP system and its ability to vent.
But in this case the check engine light was not on.

If spits fuel when fullthen is the same problem?
what would cause fuel to be sent to the charcoal canister?
Where are you guys located? I need my car checked out and fixed for this same issue
My new Subaru Crosstrek wilderness 500 Miles same issue
I changed my evap canister and it's still doing it
I WISH YOU WOULD DO A RAM 1500 5.7 FUEL EVAP SYSTEM. MY 2011 IS DOING IT AND 4 YEARS AGO COST ME 1800.00, TANK AND FUEL FILL TUBECWAS REPLACED
Would this affect fuel consumption?
No, not that I can think of. Thanks for watching!
~Mike
No change. And tips?
I would start checking the hoses for any restrictions, if that does not solve your issue there may be a stuck valve in your fuel tank.
~Ryan
@@GoTechTraining I blew out all hoses when I dropped the tank to check them all. Thanks.
I laughed out loud when he blew into it. Bro, not a great idea, hahaha
Is it dangerous to drive the vehicle with this problem? I still fill up my tank even though the pump stops multiple times, and I have a p0446 code. 04 Tahoe
