When ever I gas my van up, the fuel starts coming out of a pipe attached to the main fuel pipe that right under the body and tank. It branches out and I guess its a run off valve so when you've put too much fuel it comes out there. I guess. What's the problem?
Also I've needed to replace my blower motor on my van, but I'm not getting the new part in bc it's a very tight squeeze bc if the black metal tube that starts in the side and runs over the battery. I hit the old part out bc I bent the housing fire the old blower but obviously I can't do that to the new part. Any tips?
Navy mechanic here. It's rare for it to actually be the charcoal cannister, usually it's the vent line needing blowing out. But when it is actually the charcoal cannister as the problem...it's because you keep clicking the gas at the end trying to get every drop you can in the vehicle! That causes fuel to reach the vent line and trickle back into the charcoal cannister and stop it up over time. When you're fueling up, stop continuously clicking the fuel trying to get every drop possible! Maybe do it a couple times and stop, and you'll never have charcoal cannister problems.

Very well presented video of a common problem in a wide range of vehicles. I also have that problem with an Avalanche and a Hummer H2 including the check engine (MIL) light and a P4520 error code (Evap Code).
Watched this video and one thing not mentioned is that this is and remains a common issue for Chevy trucks which is what he's working on. Another design flaw by Chevy was and is the short run of the filler tube and the bend in it. I've seen brand new Chevy trucks do this and obviously there was no blockage in the canister.
I have gas can plastic filler neck, which a piece broke off inside. So, I don’t know if the piece is tumbling around the filler neck, causing the constant filling issue. Or, has this piece found its way all the way down to the tank causing filling problems?
Im having issues as well while fueling but mine is spilling out the vent solenoid and it recently started to over flow out the filler tube. I replaced the vent solenoid, charcoal canister, blew out the lines but I'm still having fueling issues. When I replaced the canister it fueled normal for about three fill ups and then started having issues again. I noticed fuel was going into the charcoal canister and also sending it to the purge valve which I also replaced on the engine side which was causing it to run rough and throw a P0300 code. I cleaned out the canister removed al the fuel inside and blew out the lines andit did help it for about a day with the running rough issue but it seems like it starting to push fuel again to the purge valve and causing it to run rough again. This is on a 2007 Silverado 1500 classic. Any suggestion on what I should do next or what it could be?
have a 07 yukon denali with the same problem ive replaced every part even cleared some lines and still can barely pump a gallon of gas before filler neck fills up and wont let me pump gas
@@gabanna9735 did you ever find a fix? My 07 is doing the same thing. I replaced purge solenoid canister and vent valve. And when getting gas it keeps popping every few gallons. Takes forever to get gas.
If you are saying that the pump keeps popping which prevents you from pumping gas in your vehicle. You might want to do a babysitter fill. It when you keep the pumps nose slightly lifted while pumping. This isn't actually a fix, but it does allow you to put fuel in your tank. Becareful not to over fill and it is even better if you know how many gallons your tank is. Good luck!
The activated carbon in the canister is sized to the fuel tank. The Marine is correct that pumping the last drop can cause the filter media inside the canister to tear as it’s under spring pressure. This leads to black carbon chunks in the purge line up to the valve & engine. The A1 Auto tech diagnosed the symptom but not the root cause. The fuel tank solenoid is open all of the time until the PCM runs an EVAP test after 4-6 hours of drive time at temp. Since it’s open, allowing air in, it has a foam filter in it or separate like this one. East to open with pocket screwdriver and dump a pound of dust out. This plugs canister way more often than anything. If the tank solenoid can’t close durning an EVAP test, a code for small or large leak will set. A loose gas cap is common. The filter could be cleaned, but replace it if you can afford it. Two wires, one or two hose and if you see thru it, spray WD-40 and quickly blow compressed air thru it. Installing rubber hoses is easy if WD-40 is sprayed, all hoses. That’s all I use it for! Ever. OBD-2 codes are in 4 categories but concern yourself with “B”. Codes in “A” turn light on now, type “B” detected problem like small leak, if refueling and 2 gallons or more added, time to run test, it shows “Check Gas Cap” this is how & type “B”. If Crooked or loose, drive, park, coolant & air temp within 10F of each, drive to temp, runs test, passes! Now repeat 40 more warm-up cycles, type “B” code disappears, congrats! OBD-2 is complex computer software and once engine is started, it takes 3-6 minutes to check everything. Complete understanding is hard but I learned it in shop, then taught it for almost 7 years in 7 or 8 states for up to 100+ techs! Best of luck! ASE Master 78 + L1

Let me know if this is correct: At 8:11 you used an air hose to pressurize the evap charcoal canister. It was plugged and the pressure remained in the evap charcoal canister. So assuming from the last three videos of yours I viewed on this subject, (car sitting and not running) I am fairly sure that the fuel vapor from the tank exits into the charcoal canister, the fuel vapors get trapped in the charcoal canister while pure fresh clean air (no gas smell) from the pressure in the tank makes it through the charcoal canister (valve open) and exits the tank through the vent valve, causing no pressure to build up in the tank. I'm having this problem with my 1997 F 250 with duel tanks , didn't have this problem till after a shop replaced the fuel pump. Note: I only use the front tank.
Alright, I have deleted the charcoal canister (temporarily as a diagnostic), I have installed two completely new vents on the top of the tank (they should move way more air than the OEM vent line), I have replaced the solenoid and also the purge valve. I had this problem on a 2003 Chevy Impala. When I turned the engine off when filling the tank the pump kept shutting off. I then turned the engine on to fill the tank, and the problem was gone. It was the vent solonoid. When the engine was off the solonoid was stuck closed so the fumes in the tank were unable to travel to the canister. When you fill the tank you create vapor. When the engine is on, the solonoid opened and the fumes were able to travel to the canister.

Have a 05 Volvo S60 2.5t my check engine light came on PO456 small EVAP leak. Had a smoke test done found out it was the fuel filler neck vent pipe small leak. This part is discontinued.garage called around and could not find another in my area. So the mechanic said he could try epoxy. Took my car to get gas and the pressure coming out of the fuel filler neck was strong. Could put too much gas in my car. Pump kept shutting off. Taking it back to the garage to see what they can do. It could be the charcoal canister or the line needs to be blown out or when putting the lines back on they are kinked. Possible human error. Will have to see. Very frustrating
Good question. Had it happen once last year and now today at same station. Hate to spend money on service if this is just random. Wonder if desert heat is playing a part.
cant you just connect the hose from the gas tank straight to the hose going to the engine? That will allow the engine to still burn the fuel vapors without all the unnecessary charcoal canisters and solenoids.

I had a half tank gas when I decided to top off prior to entering the Gettysburg battle field for a tour. I only Got about a dollars gas in when the nozzle started shutting off and spilling out gas. I couldn’t get any more gas in. (2019 Jeep Cherokee). Called a Jeep dealership and they recommended bring in the car. Decided Toft to our destination and see what goes. Tank should 3 quarters empty when I pulled into a gas station. Holding my breath, I had no problem topping off the tank. Car ran fine rest of trip. Gonna try again when at half a tank just to see what happens before i take to the shop. 🤞🤞🤞
We change the charcoal canister and the solenoid. Gas still will not pump without clicking off any other ideas what it could possibly be?
Might this affect a diesel. My friend has a vauxhall meriva diesel that has the aame problem
I've never come across a failed canister but those vent solenoid valves off the canister have at some point given me an issue in the life of some of my vehicles ( mostly Honda's)..
Very informative
I'm having this problem with my 1997 F 250 with duel tanks , didn't have this problem till after a shop replaced the fuel pump. Note: I only use the front tank.
Thanks for sharing 🤙🏾👍🏾
awesome! Thank you for sharing this video
Great information video 👍
Having this problem with my 07 Chevy Trailblazer. Is this the same process to fix or try to fix my car???
Alright, I have deleted the charcoal canister (temporarily as a diagnostic), I have installed two completely new vents on the top of the tank (they should move way more air than the OEM vent line), I have replaced the solenoid and also the purge valve. It still won't fill at the station without either clicking off or pouring out the top of the spout. If I fill it slow, I can fill the tank, it just takes a really long time. 2008 Chevy Uplander 3.3
I did this same job on our 2002 Suburban. It solved the same issue for about 6 months. Now I can't fill it up with gas again.
New : purge solenoid, vent valve, charcoal canister, and gas tank cap.
Any suggestions?
When I search for charcoal/EVAP canister /filter I’m getting no hits to price or order said part. What words do I use to find the part for my dodge ram?
I had this problem for only a couple of days in my 2007 Dodge Ram 1500. I was driving cross country so I didn't want to deal with it at the time. I filled up a little bit at a time. After a couple of days it resolved itself and has been fine for the past three years. In retrospect I suspect I might have topped off the gas as much as possible when I had a cheap price on gas.
Yes! I had this issue with a Audi Q5 I had borrowed from the dealership. The tank had less than a quarter in it and I couldn’t fill it at all. Kept doing the auto shutoff at the pump.
Thanks 👍
can charcoal be cleaned? or get cheap charcoal canister in place of original? my car is 2005 ford expedition thx
My car that problem lol
I'm no mechanic
But I'll try it in the spring 2022
Great Content..
This still happens, even after I bought a new vent valve, purge solenoid and vapor canister and fuel cap. I also blew out all evap hoses with compressed air.
I STILL can't put gas in the tank. 2002 suburban. PLEASE HELP!
I yelled when you put the rusty heat shield back 😂, but I mean, it's lasted this long, must still be good
Should the breather tube have gas in it?
Thank you for your helped a lot

I have a 2005 Silverado 2500 hd 6.0 I've removed the canister and the vapor line from the tank to the canister and it still won't accept the gas. then with all that disconnected I blew air into the tank at the fill up end and it blew the air back out at me then I tried the vent neck and had the same affect. i used my camera and nothing is stuck in the filler neck.

I’m having this problem now. Just had the charcoal canister fix- $335 and still having trouble getting gas in!!!!!
+@sylviamcdade9098 We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Having error code P0441. When taking off the gas cap to fill tank there is pressure it vents. Also when filling it kicks off the pump frequently. This is probably my problem as well?
If I accidentally leave the car running while I’m pumping gas, will vapors, or gas enter where it’s not supposed to go (please excuse my lack of Terminology for the components of a car)… would that activate the check engine light on?
Very informative video
I have a 22’ Ram 1500 limited Longhorn with the 33 Gal tank. Now with about 50 miles left for range, I only get about 28 gals in the tank. I know at 50 miles left there can’t be 5 gals in the tank remaining. Is this normal?
Thank you 👋
Hey we have a 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan rt, every time we go to the gas station and start fuelling it stop at $10 and then stop every $0.10 or $0:40 cents. It’s been driving me crazy, we spent a lot of money in it and still couldn’t find the problem. Please help or tell us the best place to go fix it in Springfield IL, thank you so much, please help out.
Got this issue with my 2011 ranger its annoying trying to fill it up. Maybe this is what's going on, I don't know
Im having the same problem on my 2018 ram 1500
Yepp
I had this problem on a 2003 Chevy Impala. When I turned the engine off when filling the tank the pump kept shutting off. I then turned the engine on to fill the tank, and the problem was gone. It was the vent solonoid. When the engine was off the solonoid was stuck closed so the fumes in the tank were unable to travel to the canister. When you fill the tank you create vapor. When the engine is on, the solonoid opened and the fumes were able to travel to the canister.
i have a 1985 that does this do you think it could be that
Just had shop fix my fuel pump cuz it was bad but now that it's fixed and I can't pump gas can u tell me whats wrong with it. I think it's charcoal canister... but I think the mechanic did something when putting In fuel pump cuz I didn't have this problem with the bad fuel pump

Replaced my charcoal canister and it didnt fix my problem.. im assuming the vent hose is clogged
Thanks!!
I was hoping for something simple and inexpensive.
This is neither
Thanks will do!!!
What if it only happens at a certain gas station?
Good question. Had it happen once last year and now today at same station. Hate to spend money on service if this is just random. Wonder if desert heat is playing a part.
That's why I'm here, did you ever figure it out, besides just avoiding that station?
I found that my truck only takes gas at certain gas stations, i feel like some gas pumps have to much pressure an some pump smoother
cant you just connect the hose from the gas tank straight to the hose going to the engine? That will allow the engine to still burn the fuel vapors without all the unnecessary charcoal canisters and solenoids.
That sounds logical, but I often wonder if all these systems don’t cause our vehicles to get worse fuel economy.
Look how rusty and crusty the metal is, but the plastic is in great shape.
What was that vehicle?
Hi mate ,
