    Got a bunch of stuff like this that don't really warrant standalone videos. Let me know if you want to see more of it! Thanks for watching. *Also, I said that the spell ranks were removed in WOTLK. That's incorrect..it was Cataclysm*
    Also Razorfen*

      What about things like keyrings? I'm not 100% sure, but I vaguely remember there being keyrings in the game up until Cataclysm or something like that. Also, I'd like to say that I love this series, and your channel! Keep up the good work

    Hunters also had to carry food for their pet, and Warlocks had to carry Soul Shards.

    • @dubious6718
      @dubious6718 7 років тому +3

      Soul shards were conjured though
      Had to kill a lot of mobs before every raid, since you got a shard for killing blow

      I forgot about the pet food!! All these comments from veteran players is awesome. So many memories flooding back.

      Dubious not for a killing blow, you had to use siphon soul to kill them

    • @dubious6718
      @dubious6718 7 років тому

      Might just be me that remember wrong but I thought you needed killing blow, with siphon soul
      Whatever it was, I also think I had a 28 slot shard bag, prolly wrong there too..

    • @ariochiv
      @ariochiv 7 років тому +2

      Yes, you needed to farm the shoul shards off mobs killed with Drain Soul, and I think the biggest soul bag was 28 slots or something similar. Raiders complained about it, but it was really not a big deal to keep your shards up off trash between bosses.
      Similar to Death Knights needing an actual corpse to animate, these simplifications have made life easier but reduced the sense of immersion in a real world, which is all but gone from the game by this point.

  • @cupriferouscatalyst3708
    @cupriferouscatalyst3708 7 років тому +82

    i definitely see the reason for removing a lot of this stuff, but i still feel like all these little things made the game feel more immersive. having to actually buy ammo from vendors was tedious, sure, but it was also satisfying when you found some better ammo. overall, there were a lot more trips back and forth between cities, vendors and trainers back then, and even though it took time, i enjoyed it. i cant exactly put my finger on why.

    • @somewhatmissing
      @somewhatmissing 7 років тому +5

      I had to have my unarmed skill trained in vanilla and in BC I had to raise my weapon skills to help kill those mana worms in Kara since they were resistant to magic damage xD I kind of wish they hadn't removed the weapon skills honestly.

      the world has been taken out of warcraft. its just queue dungeon finder to lvl up to max, get your beginners raiding gear/pvp gear, pvp/raid, dailies and legendary quest. no reason to really go anywhere other than higher lvl content after dungeons become less efficient, then just hang in the main expansion hub and wait. you can do almost everything without having to talk to anyone. i remember making guilds with friends just because we could run dungeons together every day instead of waiting hours in trade chat, and we had fun.
      you had to pay attention to who you were playing with if you wanted to get anywhere, now you can just "see the content" and do raid finder, you only need good PvE gear to do higher challenge raids, so why farm the gear in the first place, just do raid finder. and if you don't care about PvP, why play? there is just nothing to keep me playing, i remember being stuck at lvl 40-50 in vanilla for the longest time because i was too busy talking to people and having fun in goldshire and other zones.

      World of Warcraft changed from an open-world RPG to a lobby based RPG.

    • @mancamiatipoola
      @mancamiatipoola 6 років тому +3

      I dunno man, like you said, it was part of the immersion of hte game, but also because the world was much smaller back then so they had to have a lot of stuff for you to do while waiting for raid day at max level. To me, the poison alchemy of rogues was such a cool little thing, that made you feel like a real assassin. As i was brewing my latest batch of crippling poison i was already thinking about the poor bastards in pvp that i was going to inflict it on.
      Also having reagents for all kinds of special skills seemed very cool, like a TRUE RPG game. I can understand why they removed them as WOW got bigger and bigger and new casual players started to flood the game, but those early days, i will never forget. Nowadays i cannot even imagine what you would fill 100 inventory slots with....
      PS: i used to LOVE slow falling with my mage off of high places, so i always had 1-2 stacks of light feathers with me. I can;t even tell you how many gadgetz i had on my engineer warrior (parachute cloak was one of my favorites).
      Being prepared with all kinds of reagents and consumables was part of the fun of being an end game pro player.

    • @eemelin6660
      @eemelin6660 7 років тому +2

      Relics did come back in a way in Legion, but the idol / relic / totem slot in gear is something I miss, although in hindsight I guess that was just compensation for not having a wand like priests did. Although that was again just shamen getting the shit end of the stick compared to everybody else (due to no totems being available for their main heal), and I don't recall there being an epic variant for any of the dps specs?

    No one seems to remember that the higher the spell rank - the harder it was to get the next rank. Some spell ranks/books were random drops from mobs in lvl 60 raids! And! They still drop in AQ 40/20 - but they are now vendor trash for about 10g.

    Its weird to think that there are people playing wow that dont know this... As someone who started in vanilla beta and played until MoP Its really crazy how a lot of new people joined after Cataclysm to a whole different game than it was a year or two ago. Ill always think of wow like it was, it reminded me so much of the times i would draft DnD campaigns with my friends and creating new characters just for fun. I think thats what most MMORPGS were trying to emulate back then. The thrill of grouping with friends to take part in an epic adventure emulating the ones youd have playing DnD

    • @cupriferouscatalyst3708
      @cupriferouscatalyst3708 7 років тому +2

      in general, i feel like a lot of the tabletop RPG influences are lost in MMORPGs and even single-player RPGs today. not saying every RPG has to feel like DnD, but for me (and presumably you too) that was what drew me to WoW.

    Don't forget Rogues who had their own Poison making profession that they had to manually apply to their weaps or Shamans who needed Ankh for Reincarnation, Fish Oil for water walking and Fish Scales for water breathing. Mages had the dust in order to open portals. I never played filthly Alliance, but maybe Paladins had shit too to cast Blessings? Oh and Locks had the most fun one of all, Soul Shards, which they had to farm from mobs before every raid.

    So, I subscribe to VERY few channels. Like, I think I'm subbed to less than 25 channels over 10 years of using UA-cam.
    You just got a sub. You have very good information, don't ramble too much, often offer a personal anecdote or two about various things, and you have a great video voice. Your editing is perfectly fine, too. Good episode length time. Definitely one of the better WoW channels that I've found -- and probably the best for information on WoW history, a la Vanilla.
    Would love to know where you end up playing when Classic launches, it'd be neat to play with someone who knows their stuff. I'm pretty knowledgeable when it comes to anything to do with Vanilla when it comes to casters, but I never learned a lot of the minutiae of melee classes.
    Anyway, just thought I'd let you know that you're in the 0.0000001% of UA-cam channels that I think are worth existing. This is probably meaningless to you, but hey, I thought you might like to know.

    This brings up memories, remember getting all weapon skills maxed out, doing the bloody quest for epic hunter quiver, and one of reasons why i still have engineering on my hunter.
    And yes on Naxx in vanilla you had to actually get the specific frost resist gear, that you could buy/craft in Light's hope Chapel. There was something you had to get just to enter, and something you crafted from tokens/craft items form naxx, to get the frost res gear. Can't remember the actual thing, but i remember the gear and what was needed to get that gear. And it was still after tbc, as you still needed to get the bloody res to finish naxx

    Speaking on the old spell ranks, I did know of a couple of healers that used various ranks of a spell simply because it was so easy to run out of mana back in Vanilla / Burning Crusade. To offset this, we also used to be able to use mana and health pots fairly often which changed later on.

  • @west3366

    Few things you forgot!
    Negative resistances. There was a mob in Ungoro which had a negative fire resistance so your fire spells could do extra damage. Warlocks could also debuff enemies with a spell which reduced their shadow resistance.
    Only 8 debuffs allowed, some specs were unplayable in raids
    5 second spirit regen rule. If you didn't cast a spell for 5 seconds, your regen from Spirit kicked in. Healers would use addons to cancel spell cast if it wasn't needed to put them outside of this window
    Out of combat ressing during raids. We had a paladin who stayed out of combat during MC fights so he could res people who died.

    Warm nostalgic fuzzies!!! In BC I used a few different ranks of Healing touch as a druid. With the amount of spirit and spell power I had my rank 6 or 7 HT was like a priest flash heal!
    For AQ it was easier for horde since we had hunter nature resist and nature resist totems from shamans. I bet it was a nightmare for alliance to farm resistance gear for that =/
    And don't forget the poor warlocks and their soul shard bags! And all the items we had to carry to cast raid wide buffs. There were always those folks that never came prepared lol xD

    In old WOW you had about 10 bag slots reserved for utilitary items and consumables. These would be profession tools, class specific reagents, mounts, relics (small items that were used by non-ranged classes and gave small bonus to an ability), pet food, hearthstone, fun consumables (who didn't have a stack of noggenfogger elixir on him?), raid consumables, raid items and trinkets. It was like going on a camping trip. A well prepared player always had a 12 slot back (that was a big bag in vanilla and TBC) filled with items like this.
    And yet it didn't feel out of place because you got to that level and the difference between a well prepared player and a filthy casual was HUGE, especially in raids.
    For vanilla raiding i remember having all 5 12 slot bags and they were all about 60% full before you even stepped foot inside the raid. Players that were ill prepared would get scoffed and laughed at. "What? You don't have demonic runes and unholy symbols with you? WTF are you gonna do when you run out of mana mid-boss?? GET OUTTA HERE noob!"
    Mana management was a BIG deal for casters and especially for healers back in the day so you had to have all kinds of weird mana consumables that were on different cooldowns from potions. Also you had to have a very good alchemist pal, of have an alchemist alt just to keep up with the mana potion demands for raids. But having all those and coming prepared to a raid made you feel like an elite player and was pretty cool.

    My guild/raiding group in vanilla won't let you participate if your not cap on skills or resist, I don't remember the numbers but if you had lower fire resist then (??185??) you could not enter molten core or onyxia, if a tank had lower defense skill then (??250??) he could not tank, even the unarmed skill had to be max in case a mob or boss had a disarm ability to get the max dps out of you, plus out of the 40 man maybe 12 had microphones and the rest could only communicate through the game chat, half did not know the strats for some bosses wipes every were, no information to be found because every one who raided was new and had to find stuff out, many guild fall apart after the second boss in BwL, we made it to naxx in vanilla and boy that was HARD!! We did not clear it but vanilla was cool and awesome the way is was and feels bad that they all chance that.

    Naxxramas also had crafted resistance gear, which is largely unavailable now. And a lot of the nature resistance for aq40 at the time came from dungeons, but preferably the Nightmare Dragons world bosses. As a druid back then, I remember looking horrid in nature resistance leathers...

    3:09 is partly incorrect. In Vanilla, resistances didn't reduce the damage taken from the certain spell school, rather they'd increase the chance to completely resist the spell.

    • @ThomasBachler01
      @ThomasBachler01 7 років тому +3

      that is partially incorrect and I would argue that "It reduced the damage from a certain spell school" is correct.
      Resistance would give you a chance to resist the damage partialy or completely and i believe we only had 25% intervals.
      So while it is true that more resistance increased your chance for a 100% resist it also increased your chance to partially resist and reduced the damage taken from that spell school on average.

    I have to admit, all the features you mention I hated and was glad to see go. As for spell ranks, I would much rather have unique spells and more complicated rotations than having to use different ranks of the same spell. Both systems added depth, but I think the potential of removing spell ranks was squandered. Of course, they have removed much of the complexity of the game through pruning, and before that, too much homogenization giving too many classes similar abilities. Pick your poison I suppose. One thing that I did miss was having to go to class trainers... along with getting talent points each level, it was always fun and exciting to head back to town to see what new upgrades I could get for spells. Admittedly, not having the gold to buy them is frustrating, but it did make for some interesting choices when leveling. It would be pretty easy for a new player to mess up (not knowing what abilities were important to their spec) and waste money on things they don't really need to buy as they level.
    I also didn't care for resist gear (and hated having to farm or craft it). Part of what felt good was progressing your character, and at max level much of this was done through gear. It just felt like it took away from this. I also didn't care for certain mobs resisting spells (like a fire spell against a fire mob). First, farming things like the elemental items for professions is a pain if it happens to be an element your spec is focused around, and since respeccing cost gold, it didn't seem worth it to change your spec for some grinding you had to do. I also didn't care for how in raid fights, it forced certain classes to play as a certain spec. I think MMORPGs are largely about choices in how you want to play, so most things that removes choice and agency from the player I tend to be against.
    I also didn't care for weapon skills. It took all of the fun out of getting a shiny new weapon only to realize you can't use it, and now have to go back to lower level zones and work your way up until you can continue where you left off. I don't mind some amount of grinding, as long as it feels like you are working towards a reward. With weapon skills, it felt like a grind just to be about where you were again. It felt like cleaning up your room before you could go out to play... not compelling game play to say the least. If I remember correctly, this applied to things like bows and guns... meaning now out of the blue you had to buy completely different ammo so you could waste it trying to level up your skill. Speaking of which...
    I did play a hunter a bit back when they still had to buy ammo. Things like this, specific pet food, warlock stones, etc. do add immersion, and made you plan out what you will do... but ultimately it just seemed like a pain. I do miss things like class quests that help you feel tied to your abilities (and yes back then I did both the water totem and aquatic form quests) and it felt more rewarding when you got the new ability. This made me feel immersed and tied to the class I was playing.. and because of that I wish they were still in the game (they could even have been improved or added upon... look at how cool the green fire quest for warlocks turned out). Something like ammo doesn't really fit the bill for me... it felt more like having to stop and fill your car up with gas or pick up groceries from the store.
    Realistic? Sure, but the main reason I play games is because they are supposed to be more fun than reality. Keeping the best parts of realism, while adding in fantastic things you can't do in real life seems like the best combination in my opinion. I think it is sad how as many good things were removed as added... it felt like a scorched earth policy to casualization and dumbing down of the game. It would have been really nice to have an immersive and challenging adventure, while having more interesting rotations and being able to easily change specializations.

    I didn't mind the arrows for hunters. I remember trying to keep getting larger and larger quivers to hold the arrows. I think it would have been fine if they eventually just gave you a separate bag slot for the ammo.
    I kind of liked how some classes needed mats to perform certain spells, like the druids w/the seeds. Priest w/the candle, pally's needed something as well I recall? Anyhow it made it feel like there was really a cost to perform certain spells and abilities that isn't there anymore.
    Didn't mind some of the resistance stuff either, just wish they would have made it not as necessary to have full gear loadouts of it. I remember some fights where u needed certain classes that had the nature buffs and it was easier to get into groups for it. Having the [Aspect of the Wild] buff as a hunt made it easier to get into some fights where Nature Resistance really helped. Groups where I'm not sure if i would have been able to get into if not for that one resistance my class offered.
    Lvling and training different weapons sucked. I have many memories going back to grinding low lvl mobs cause of a new weapon. I hated doing it but it does bring back lots of nostalgia.

    Touching on the spell rank thing, for Priests with full Tier 2 (Transcendence) the 8 piece bonus left a Renew effect when you cast Greater Heal. Many Priests would simply use Rank 1 Greater Heal for mana-efficient off-healing on injured DPS since it would act kind of like Regrowth in a way. The Renew effect ticked the max regardless of the spell rank you used.

    Lower ranked healing spells were also used to avoid overhealing. If you only have to heal 500 hp and have to heal the target because of some wipe mechanic or the generally very high raid dmg, it was pointless to use a high rank spell that could heal 1.5k or so, wasting mana (and maybe even cast time) in the process.

    4:20 : IIRC razorfen was about 40, and pretty much 100% sure that Maraudon was 47-53 (dropped item were between 46 and 51 I think). And yes, the worse was Huhuran, because of the terrrible lack of nature gear around (a few stuff were added in quest in silithus with AQ iirc, but outside of that, yep, Maraudon...). Saphiron required a lot of frost resistance. However, plenty of craft as well as epic drop from naxx40 itself were added with naxx40, so it wasn't that bad to farm for frost resist gear, the result was still pretty decent stat wise due to most pieces being of epic quality.

    Priests are kind of famous for down ranking spells for a couple reasons, biggest being down-ranking Power Word: Shield on fights with raid-wide damage ticks.
    At the time discipline priests had a talent called Rapture which refunded a percent of the cost of a power word shield when it broke, once every 12 seconds.
    However, this talent was kind-of bugged and if more than one Power Word: Shield broke at the same time, it would refund the mana for all of them instead of just one.
    So, on fights with raid wide damage abilities such as Lich King w/ Infest, you would downrank your Power Word: Shield so that it would just pop when the damage came through, giving you back pretty much your entire mana bar back, allowing for some pretty crazy PW:S spam.
    Blizzard left the bug in the game until the Cataclysm expansion.

    2:43 it's not as simple as they cost more mana (as you wouldn't do that with entry level 60 gear for example, the top rank spells would actually be more mana efficient). It's that once you start to get enough + healing gear, the lower rank were healing for quite a good amount as well and suddenly, the lower rank were more mana efficient than the higher. Furthermore, back then the health bar were very small, so when you were healing someone with a heal spell at max rank, you could easily heal for 2/3rd of the healthbar of your target. As an example, as a full t2-t3 raiding naxx40, full buffed my health was around 3k6 (still has screenshot to confirm this). A greater heal was around 2k1, and critical heal from greater heal could go easily to 3k2/3k3 (back then critical heal were only +50%). Meanwhile, many abilities and AoE in raid fight were dealing 2k-3k damage, so if you wanted to simply top someone who was still 2/3rd health (in order to avoid him to be one shot), using flash heal was not mana efficient compared to greater heal/heal, but using your max rank was terribad overhealing. So, downranking was key. If you only needed to heal for 1k5, then you would hit the key for heal healing 1k5 and costing you almost nothing mana wise.
    I really liked the downranking of spell as a raiding priest. Having several rank of healing spells and appropriately hitting the right key to lower overheal and manage your mana was an integral part of gameplay. They removed that possibility with BC (as in, you could use it, but they decreased heavily the % of + healing taken for lower rank, making them non efficient), and gameplay as a priest felt really lacking as a result.

    Resistance could be re-implemented by creating "resistance tokens". They stack on top of enchants and are dropped by either prior raid bosses in the same instance or in the precursor raid/dungeon. They drop on top of gear. It may mean that a boss is killable with a mix of good gear plus increased resistance OR full previous tier plus a little resistance. And make the resistance boss/raid specific (instead of frost maybe this time it's "ice") to prevent people from farming old raids/dungeons to beat current content.

  • @fu_ck1
    @fu_ck1 6 років тому

    Talking about vanilla healing: Spell ranks learned at levels lower than 20, would get a penalty to how much it would benefit from healing+ items.
    Ie. you'd rather use healing spell rank learned at level 26 over the lower rank one that's learned at level 18
    You can look up on how it works but to put it simply, you spam the healing spell you learn closest at to lvl 20 or slightly above. Still benefiting fully from healing+ stat, costing less mana than the higher rank spells which benefit from healing+ by the same amount
    = the most mana efficient way to heal
    but if you have to nuke heal, then you use higher 'level-learned' spells/ranks of them, mainly in a emergency, especially if you can make the cast time instant.
    Vanilla healers can correct me if I'm wrong but for the most part this is accurate.

    • @fu_ck1
      @fu_ck1 6 років тому

      Forgot to mention one thing: the casting time of the spell ALSO affects the benefit from healing+ stat.
      You know how at certain rank, the cast time wont go any higher? Usually 3,5 sec cast time. This max cast time benefits the most from healing+.
      Note: the talents that reduce cast time WILL NOT impact the calculation of healing+ benefit. So the spell that's originally 3,5 sec, will act with healing+ the same way even if you have talents that reduce the cast time.
      =The base cast time is only taken into the calculation
      Simply said: Use the ' the first, highest cast time rank' to heal the most efficiently.
      (3,5 sec cast time spells benefit 100% from healing+ > 3,0 sec cast time benefits 85.71% from healing+)
