I still have the items from doing those attunement quests for Ony and UBRS. They still work too, like turning int oa black dragonkin in that one cave. Those were the days where crafting had a legit purpose and satisfaction when you reach maxed level. Least Legion did give us some of that.

The amulet on Bolvar's neck was not to control him, it was so he couldn't see tru Onyxia's desguise. Bolvar, as powerful as he was, could have sensed she was a dragon, and that would have put an end to her plans.
I'd like to suggest a video about the keys, as many people probably have no idea... In this one you mentioned the "key" for UBRS, and the shadowforge key for BRD... but there's also the Crescent Key for Dire Maul, the Skeleton Key for Stratholme, Entrance Service key for Strath (tho this just involves runing from the live side and hop to the undead side to loot it) The Scarlet Key and the Gnomeregan Key for the side entrance or shortcut, also not exactly a key but the Scepter of Celebras for Maraudon was a very much needed shortcut.
Having raided on both horde and Alliance in vanilla and attuning on both sides as well, I can say that the Alliance Onyxia attunment was much worse. Especially if you joined a raid group that was already farming Onyxia; meaning that they had already completed the attunment with the majority of their roster. And getting someone to volunteer to help you escort Windsor after they already did it was like asking someone to let you kick them in the balls for free.
You could feel that brotherly love in vanilla guilds.

By worse you mean Best, right? Horde atunement felt too flat, also Alliance had a damn good reazon for the whole story... Ony was sitting in our damn castle!!!

In terms of story, yes. In terms of gameplay........ escort quest....
Even people that had already done escorted Windsor or were just there would help out. Very rarely if ever did anyone actually tell you where Rexxar was the 3 times you had to find him. If you did find him he was flagged so Alliance loved to camp him.
You forgot to mention that we had to keep those "keys" in our bags, which weren't 30 slot epic bags. You might have some 14 slot runecloth bags, or if you were lucky you might loot some 12 slot bags. Blizzard eventually created a "keychain" where the keys would be held, which freed up a lot of precious bag space.
Those Onyxia quests tore my guild apart.....man those were the good days hahahaha

i vaguely remember doing it myself and we fucked it up at least 6 times. Pulling multiple packs, running out the dungeon. People not on the correct quest.... Endless torture.
Don't forget Rexxar also walked from north to south of Desolace and with those horrid mounts yelling in general over and over 'ANYONE SEEN REXXAR!?" lawl.

@@Hecatate Playing on a private server just been through desolace and the answer is yes. Every 1-10 min someone writes "ANYONE SEEN REXXAR?". Then you just see lvl 60s running around

@@viikmaqic And Rexxar also still just kills people , happened to my lvl 40 recently who was just escorting that goblin caravan, I expected some ambushes but I got a champion of the Horde

I just found your videos today and I'm loving watching these. It's a real hit of nostalgia when I'm remembering all the effort that went into things in early game play.
Whilst I played vanilla I never hit level cap so I missed out on Onyxia's quest chain, but I remember occasionally walking into the keep and suddenly having a big dragon appear and no matter what level I was, feeling a sense of pride when I go to hit her. (okay so I usually Missed, but it was cool none the less) Or watching the parades of guild members walking through the streets of Stormwind to confront Lady Prestor.
i really liked attunement quests back in the days. They felt like epic adventures. especially the bc ones.
I agree. It didn't really feel like an annoying process either. When you completed the quest and ran the dungeon or raid it felt really fulfilling, like you actually accomplished something important to play with the "big lads" so to speak.
I would have prefered them to be account-wide.

I had one of the 100% speed mounts back in Vanilla, back in like spring 2006. Man, I was so proud. Back then, I'd get whispers of 'Nice mount!' on my swift white mechanostrider.
You forgot to mention that the gemstones needed for the UBRS key, in addition to only dropping for one person, only had a 10% CHANCE TO DROP. It took me 30 runs of LBRS to get that key, and each run took about an hour and a half, and that's without counting thw time needed to find a group for it which took about 30 mins to 1 hour.
This made the key so rare that once I got it, I started running a business opening UBRS doors for gold.
Good idea! It was such a bummer when you organized your UBRS group and you're looking forward to (carefully) kicking *ss with those pulls in that initial room and then realize that nobody has the stupid key.
I never ever got the UBRS key, nobody wanted to run LBRS. The guild only wanted to continuously run UBRS, BRD, Strat UD, Scholo.
Your content in so in depth and you make EVERYTHING you talk about really gripping, that’s my opinion and yeah! Keep it up 👍👍

I had good memories during the Onyxia quest chain, it felt like an adventure back then and I liked how you needed to communicate with other players to progress through the story. I wish we still had something like that now.

back then, raiding was special and epic. i miss that.
I feel like Alliance's escort quest wasn't too difficult if you played it safe. The difficulty in the horde one, however, is the travel which was unavoidable.
Plus, the alliance one was cooler lore wise. I feel like that helps balance it out XD
Oh man the nightmares this video pulled up of having to try to get a group together each night to get all of this done. By then the guilds tank and healer didn't want to do it anymore and would just tell you to find someone else to run it as they wanted to work on alts while the rest of the guild got attuned. I still remember my guild's main tank for Vanilla and have his as a Facebook friend all of these years later, nuts!
Acc0rd79 lol, as a holy priest i was one of those healers in my guild that by the time vanilla was done felt like i had lived in brm. I still have my seal of ascension ring on my original priest along with i think its the amulet that allowef you to bring forth the dragon to help out during the aren

those quests were insane! even the warlock and paladin quests to get your fast mounts were pretty tough, although I always like the warlock quest chain to unlock the original "Ritual of Doom" to summon a doomguard pretty much anywhere you wanted! Goldshire was a personal favorite! lol

He did cover it pretty thoroughly to be honest. Also you can find vids on YT with the full process, if you really want to see all the NPCs involved and all the quest text. Frankly i did these attunements recently (about a year ago) while playing wiht some pals on a vanilla private server. I used a nice 10 bullet point list i found on an old forum to help speed the process. It wasn't that bad, especially since i was in a freindly guild that helped me with groups all the time, even for killing the drakes because - he forgot to mention - they were very powerful elites so you needed a 3 man party to take one down (i did the horde side).
All the steps involved in these attunements makes me think of that Asterix movie where they need, like, grey form 4 from pink desk 12 to get blue form 7 so they can take that to red desk 2 and get green form 11... or something.

Yea, the Shadowforge key was not required for the Ony chain, but as you suggest, made it much easier since you could bypass a good chunk of BRD.

Seeing how hard I used to game to do these things makes me wanna play vanilla again, but every time I do I realize that I don't really want to suffer that much anymore.

In some way i miss that attunement, but tbh now days i cant image do it again. But it feel realy rewarding walking trough Stormwind and all gruard salute you etc... I remember when is start plaing Wow back in vanilla and saw someone in SW walking to SW keep. I had to follow and then DRAGON!!!! O.o (i was around 25 lvl and i didnt know what was that) and few months (yes months) later it was I who are walking in SW :)

Yeah I'm kind of glad they're in the past now, the alliance Onyxia attunement and the Karazhan attunement (along with the quest to be able to summon Nightbane) did feel like epic adventures but by god looking back on them was like 90% of the time spent wasted on travelling back and forth.
Like I imagine people remember the original 'Legend of Stalvan Mistmantle' and the entire Morbent Fel questlines were these huge globe trotting adventures back when you didn't have a mount because you got it at level 40 (if you scrimped and saved all your gold) and not level 20.
The Morbent Fel one required you to travel all the way to the Wetlands and considering you were human, you probably didn't have the flight path for it, which meant going to Stormwind, getting on the Deeprun tran and then running all the way from Ironforge, through Loch Modan, to Menethil Harbor in the Wetlands, killing murlocs, grabbing the item you needed from the ship they were hanging around and then flying back to Ironforge, back on the deeprun tram, back to Stormwind and then back to Duskwood and running all the way back to Raven's hill.
IIRC flight paths back then needed to be 'connected' if you missing a flight path point inbetween your current location and your destination, it wouldn't connect.

@@luketfer I guess part of the reason blizz made that kind of chain quests was to guide players to more zones... I remember a colleague of mine in 2006 who had never set a foot on the other continent before lvl 47.... I was like man! weren't you curious what you could find there? He was like.. well I had so much to do in Eastern Kingdoms I never felt the need.... He also was a grinder, so he got most of his levels just killing mobs and ignored all quests that had him travel

I miss attunements. So satisfying to complete, and the challenge was epic.
And BRD & UBRS was an entire day to complete, and drops weren't guaranteed. Some attunements took weeks.

Ah, fond memories of a crazy day. I was lvl59 and my guildies had started raiding since a few weeks already, so an afternoon the officers take me and two others that had not finished attunements, we do the MC one (taking the shortcut by the lava pool with fire resistance potions), then UBRS (where I got lvl60) for Onixia and BWL (thankfully I had done the Windsor and Emberstrife parts already so we just had to kill Drakkisath. I got the RF shield on him too, me lucky bastard. Oh, and we had to do it twice cause the event with Nefarian and Blackhand bugged XD) and then it was the evening and we finished just in time to start the Onixia raid :)
Attunements, up to 60 and first raid, what a day that was
Still now I like to solo BRD and the likes, taking my time, for nostalgia (and reagents, I was so late on my crafting, the best I could do by the end of Vanilla were Ghost Blades).
Cool video and cool series! I wanna just point out that as an Horde character you couldn't do the quests to kill 3 dragons in Winter, Tanaris and Swamp all together, but instead you had to kill the first, go back to talk to Ember to get the 2nd quest and so on.
I played primarily horde back in the day, and of course i went through the whole attuning process of onyxias lair. It was the bane of my existence from start to finish. But seeing the attuning process for alliance, I think they had it tougher than we did. That escort quest looks like pure cancer.
You could cover the AQ mallet quest too btw. Sure, it was a server-wide effort to gather enough mats to open the gates, but there was also a (fairly lengthy iirc) quest chain to obtain the mallet that was used to sound the gong to actually make the gates open. The person who used the gong would the get the black scarab mount (and scarab lord title later on). After that, the gong remained active for some amount of time (12 hours?) for everyone else with the mallet to complete the quest so they could get their mount as well, but afaik, only several people in a raiding group were realistically able to complete the whole chain before the Silithus war effort was ready.
that quest also included a fight in moonglade that was done by horde and alliance cooperating against a green dragon, together with tyrande a few other important personalities, IIRC. So many peoples were participating that the server was pretty much crashing from overload, the lag was insane for everyone. I remember respawning and just dying egain without being able to do a thing because of high was the ping. And tyrande had a massive zone heal that was incredibly strong comapred to anything player had. yet players were chain dying, despite being hundreds against the boss.

I remember doing the mc attunement and theres a bridge in brd you can jump down in where the lava is and you could swim from rock to rock. Was supposed to be a shortcut to the stone by the back way to mc but with healing and bubbles to lava swim i think it'd be easier to work your way down as normal.
I just got Ony attuned in Classic on my horde character. Quest was really fun.
I can't wait to do this again. No joke.

you made the opening of AQ sound so easy, someone had to hit the gong beforehand and the quest chain before that was insane, I got part way through it (up to the collecting of mats) before it was removed, sure not everyone had to do it but still
Some jerk guilds would try to hold the server to ransom by refusing to strike the gong. Eventually Blizz started the event anyway on those servers which failed to complete the quest chain.
Please do the Burning Crusade one you said you want to do! Love this Time Warp series as someone who only started in end of WoD
The aq opening was amazing, you had to contribute mats and that was the first time i saw my frienda guild mc horde to give paladin buffs. I was mid 40s at the time and on my server s t2 lock got the world bug mount. Server was glitchy like michael j fox back then
The "attunement" of AQ was different as it was not individual, but required a server effort and a raid effort, the server one meant both factions had to gather resources (a lot of them) for the war supply, but it also had a long quest chains and you needed a very good group to complete them to get the "Scepter of the shifting sands".
True, once opened everyone could go in without any other form of attunement.
Yes, AQ attunement ImO remain by far the longest (both in time and quest) atunment this game ever had. The fact that players could enter afterwards without having done anything doesn't change what players had to do first. Fastest door opening still took a whole server cooperating for around 2 weeks, and that was the fastest. Many server took between 1 and 2 months. Some never did it, as IIRC after more than two month doors automatically opened on every server that still didn't had it open.
I remember attunement raids/groups. The part I hated that most was finding Rexxar and Misha, his love pet, who wandered the area around Maura (the whole map). I remember on my priest I went there daily for weeks and couldn't find the bastard. I finally just went there and sat in place, offering a gold reward for anyone that saw him and could direct me to him.
Before you get the Key for BRD at the statue you had to kill the boss between the vault and the Fireboss. That is 15-20 groups of Mobs further into the Dungeon.
I remember bein all proud of gettin my warr BWL attuned then never going in in vanilla ;p
I averaged about 5 hours/day, every day, for 3ish years during vanilla and tbc, and I never considered myself hardcore. That was somewhere in the middle during that period. It was awesome! :D
I wanna add one pain part about the horde onyxia attunement.
Finding Rexxar. He used to patrol throughout the whole of Desolace and all the way in to Feralas. Looking for him on a a 60% mount could take up to an hour

if wow ever brough back attunements there has to be a system in place that unlocked the raid for alts or give a slight advantage if you completed the quest and decide to help a friend out cause this questline was bullshit when I did it.
Man, oh man did I hate the quest chain back than. But that feeling when you and your guild finally killed Onxy after like a heart felt 1000 wipes...

This is why I liked vanilla so much. I played FFXI before I started playing wow vanilla, so to me these quest chains where not that long and traveling in wow vanilla was fast and easy compared to what I was used to in FFXI.
For memory's sake, and since I don't remember most of this, I wouldn't mind videos about the other attunements. TBC ones were pretty obscure too.
With MC and AQ a lot of the "effort" was lessened on personal effort in lieu of group effort. Whilst the MC attunement was simple the requirements to complete MC included enough players with Hydraxxian rep to smolder the ground keys in order to get to Ragnaros. When at Ragnaros, you then needed fire resistance at very least on the tank to ~300 which required rep with the thorium brotherhood ( ie. a lot of hand ins and a lot of dark iron ore - smeltered only at the bottom of BRD ). Don't start me on the war effort, deputising, "dearest natalia" -> "bang a gong", and the 22,000 carapaces.There's enough content in that to warrant their own videos, maybe a thought!

It was worth the time saving him on the alliance side because of the Onyxia event in stormwind the horde did not get that.

One of my oldest dreams, that I thought would become reality after Cataclysm, was that some event destroys or otherwise makes Ironforge uninhabitable, and so the Dwarves move to BRD or the whole BRM as their new capital, conquering/assimilating it from Dark Irons, orks, etc.

it's on old video but wowcrendor did an interactive vid that captures the true pain that the Horde had to endure.
Someone needs to compile all of your Vanilla Time Warp Videos as a pre-face for non-vanilla players that plan on playing Classic. They need to be aware of the amount of effort they are going have to put forth. So much is taken for granted today.
Please do a video for every raid or instance i would totally watch them
All the time and effort completing the quest chain to unlock the raid, the time spent getting 40 people together and then the time and effort taken to work together and suffer many wipes before finally completing the raid to get somebody ninja loot the drops compared to now where you can literally walk straight in, one hit the boss solo and take all the loot for yourself. Amazing how something can change that much over the years.
i started back in wotlk and i did so many attunements for no reason other than to do it and experience it.
Just going from memory (was ages ago of course) I don't think I got the key to UBRS for a looong time. We used to either use a rogue to unlock it or had some people in our guild that had the key to unlock it for guild runs.
Ah... BRD is one of my favorit Dungeon in WoW. And Blackrock is my alltime Favorit Dungeon/Raid complex... now we have 2017 and i still love it. I know, it was big, hard and annoying... but is still love it!
Back as a rogue i upped my lockpicking by going to brd heading to the left to the gate and then that room that unlocked that big wheel which was to a drawbridge. Shitty thing was i had to get s buddy in a party lockpick, go out reset the dungeon and do it again and you were capped after 5 resets for 24 hrs. If anything that was one reason to bring a rogue to lp brd and scholo and for cc but only if you had soecced in improved sap which was 90% so it could break so you went in solo to sap and if it broke you either vanish or die so you dont pull mobs to the group.
There was a thing for rogues called evasion tanking if the tank died you tried to pull aggro and evasion on a melee boss. Also as a rogue engineer using goblin jumper cables to res which was 60% chance to work or ffail. I used em a few times with success.

The basic for alliance seems by video as harder. What's not mentioned about the horde side is rexxar wandered. Not just wandered but was a killable NYC for the alliance who was all on his own not with city guard protection. His spawn time was pretty high for a quest giver also. This translates to a lot of looking sometimes in vain for Rexxar. Also ganking while trying to locate this possibly dead not. So in my opinion it really depended on the server for which was harder to complete. Depending on rexxar uptime on your server.
My first raid was Kara I remember everyone going the and one person would have the key and would unlock the door and everyone would run in. Or even better a rogue with high enough skill would just pick the lock. Also I remember when someone would leave and we would get a new person someone would have to run back to the beginning and open the door if they didn't have the key.
I know it's a game Mechanic but i wonder if there is a Lore behind the Atunmenrt chain quests
Vandalia1998 the Onyxia quest for the alliance side actually is full of lore.
