the laughing might of seemed natural in the moment but looking back at it he seemed to be shitting his pants with anxiety after each question especially the online ones
Yeah, the dude only had atleast 5 devs at that time and the interviewers asked so much, Sean being new at his job thought maybe he could pull it off. He probably drowned in expectations after. But still, props to him for not being a pussy and continuing with his work despite the huge backlash. Srsly, he could've just ran away with the money.
I get your point but not everyone has confidence speaking in public, some are bound to make stupid decisions when agitated. Sean Murray is not a PR, he was clearly nervous during his interviews. But yes, he could have avoided some mishaps by saying NO. Then again he was still new and had no experience being handicapped by deadlines. Even more so on scaling it. So I’ll atleast give him some slack. Also, the failure of No Man's Sky was not entirely his liability. Some stories have two sides so I tend not to judge depending on the media's words. I did a bit of digging myself. Turns out a part of it was Sony's fault, who helped in publishing and promoting the game. Hello Games was already being pressured having only 5 developers that time. Had Sony not establish a tight deadline, Then Hello Games could have made the game as intended, instead of being dumpster fire. I’m assuming all Sony wanted was to cash in the revenue the game made from all the hype produced by Sean.
He acted always really strange, it was not that he was shitting his pants, or anxiety, it was always that he speaked lies insted of thruth. He always knew that the game will be a failure, but tried to speak with lies saying that you can do anything without any explanation, or get in galactic wars or shit in space, that tone of his voice is because he always was a lier, hate that shit.
It’s always funny to me how a specific UA-cam video like the internet historians points out things that many people hadn’t talked about/noticed before and then people who watched said video rush to the comment sections of other videos on the subject and repeat his findings as if they discovered it

If you are going to sell a little indie game as a AAA (hell its even priced as a AAA) you are gonna be judged as a AAA game developer.. These are the consequences..
Andy Ham exactly! this game would have been much better received if it was sold as what it really is.. a little exploration indie game with random generated planets/maps.. but no... $60.. but lets not forget about the multiplayer lies..
I may be indulgent only with something that is either in Early Access, or was sold in a cheap bundle. Anything that cost 30€ or more (like Stellaris or American Truck Simulator) should be released as a complete game experience. Also the devs should be really open about the kind of long term support (and how they intend to finance it) and so i'm ok if the game will be constantly updated with DLC (like CK2). With devs like Paradox, SCS, or Dovetail i know what to expect when they publish a game, or a DLC. The problem with Hello Games is that this is their first ambitious project, and they have been really closed about it
If you're OK with paying even $20 for a broken, glitchy, misleading game that belongs in the trash then you are what is wrong with the gaming community.
What is the point of making in the center if you can't call your progress really a journey? Because of all the hype videos and posts made people think that there is more in the game. They better add lot of new features and enemies in it, just mining and trading got boring pretty fast along with the centinels robots which are super easy to kill. Im not even going to into the "Epic space battles" because there is not really much to say, its boring as hell.

@@Jaypes1 seriously, I can do 'anything' I want when I walk out the door, but what am I accomplishing? I just wish he took something away from Mojang and also not over promise. He did a good turn around, just like Minecraft eventually got a narrative together. Though that story wasn't important to me gamers still want to feel some sort of accomplishment and satisfaction from action. If we wanted to look at stuff we'd watch a movie or stream I guess. If he just was somewhat truthful there would be a fraction of the ridicule
that guy was coked out of his fucking mind, but he was right. sandbox games need more gameplay pillars. you have crafting, gathering, combat, building and character progression. but there also needs to be deep NPC interactivity and base management. more sandbox games need NPCs who do stuff on their own such as develop their own economy and build, explore, fight amongst themselves. as well as the ability for players to create bases/towns and have to manage them with upkeep through power and currency, and bring in NPC functionality into that on top of other players. if sandbox games had all these pillars, that genre would be even bigger than it is now... provided they could get their games to run well and actually not get abandoned in early access.
For people not understanding, back at the time, there wasn't base building and interesting quests, the main quest was basically "go to the center of the galaxy" and that was all. We couldn't land on freighters, we couldn't visit derelict freighters, there were no pirates, no colonies, and so on... That's something that is not mentioned in the video because back at the time we didn't knew the game would be incredible 7 years later.
I’ve just beat the game today (if you can even call it that) after playing it for the past month or so, 50 hours in. I had played this at launch many years ago but never beaten it until now. While the game is certainly massively improved from launch, tons of features and improvements made along the way, it is still fundamentally a boring experience. It is also still extremely buggy and my game crashed maybe 15-20 times while playing. There were definitely some fun moments but it still gets very repetitive. I got it for $20 and I feel like that is a good price for it. Definitely not worth $60 in my opinion. If you like spending 100s of hours doing the same thing over and over with no point in doing so, you might like this game.
the way sean murray acted in all these interviews is like when a kid lies about being able to rock on the guitar just to look cool to his friends, but word gets out and suddenly everybody in the school has heard about Billy's Badass Guitar Skills and wants to see, his teachers enroll him in the talent show to play a kickin' guitar solo, and while all this is happening the kid is sweating with fear knowing he doesn't know a damn thing about playing guitar, but he's in far too deep to say anything now because all eyes are on him. so he goes with it, and on the day of the talent show he plays horribly.

This situation was funny in retrospect. You had the ONE journalist actually doing his job while all the others spoon-fed lies to the general gaming public. This was made to implode.
Rewatching this again and it really is infuriating listening to these ignorant shills praise a game that wasn't even out yet and ignoring all the red flags. Then getting mad and arguing with us skeptics as if we're the crazy ones. Even worse if they say "its just a beta they'll fix it in the full release."
Is it any wonder why the whole “modern games suck” mentality is so uncommon? It’s because you have shills online who’ll justify games being broken at launch with the “they’ll patch it later” excuse and it’s become so prominent it got to a point where game devs and publishers have been putting out broken games day one, which is extremely problematic. While I’m not against games receiving patches, I’m against games being broken at launch and if No Man’s sky was playable day one, then I might’ve gotten it day one.

I think he still thought they could make all of the promises come true. As a idiotic procrastinator myself, I know the feel of just saying shit that could technically be true, until the deadline is there, and you shit the bed lmao
yeah, i agree. i think he was aware that the game had been announced a few years too early but didn't know what to do about it. i know that problem myself, i always think stuff like "oh, yeah, i'll do this, tomorrow i'll do that, [...]" and so on and a week later i'm still sitting on the first day's task and haven't even finished half of it. pretty sure he simply hugely underestimated how long it would take to make such a game when he set a release date. and then of course he had sony behind him like "nah man, we made a shitload of ads already. you either release this game without delay or you pay us back every single cent that we spent on ads" still a very big mistake of him, but i doubt it was evil intent.
I kind of feel for Sean. His body language screams awkward introvert. He legit had a vision for his game though. It isn't a huge company cash grab. The dude got swept up in the hype of his own game. I hear he buckled down and made a comeback. So for that I say good to you Sean. You redeemed yourself.
@@ithereos9554 Dude had 0 PR training, he's awkward and quiet and suddenly thrust into the spotlight before millions of people. And he believed his team could do everything he was saying by the time the game was released, they just ran out of time. To make it more stressful and confusing, Sony is on your back to deliver your game as early as possible, and they're telling you not to fucking say a single thing negative about your game when you're on prime time TV. All you do is program games. You don't know that people are going to take everything you say as scripture, you're just a normal guy with a tiny studio suddenly thrust into a very abnormal situation, trying to advocate for yourself and your vision. And all the while, Sky TV has your tiny team constantly embroiled in a lawsuit over having the word "Sky" in the name of your game. _For three years._ How would you handle all that? And if you say you'd handle it fine and not put a single foot wrong, I'll know you're lying. I know I would fall apart, and I'm surprised Sean didn't as well, *especially* considering his house and studio got flooded during the development of the game. He reminds me of myself. I don't want to disappoint other people, but I also don't have great time management skills, and he might not either. Not everyone has a team of hundreds of people to rely on and dozens of PR agents constantly managing the fans' perceptions of the game. And you should know, they were investigated for false advertising and cleared of any charges. So that's probably something to take note of.
This game and its studio is the ultimate underdog comeback story. We all expected them to take the money and run and yet Sean sat down and made the game great. For this reason alone I purchased the game even though it's not my thing. There aren't many good guys left out there when it comes to game development.
@@ithereos9554 bro when you're making a game you don't know what the end product will look like. Games are never finished, just at some point they are released. They needed years more to finish the game. But now virtually everything promised is in the game now, and a lot more than what is promised too. And it's still going, we had another massive expansion (bringing villages/colonies to the universe) a month or two ago, and there seems to be no sign of it stopping. Find me another game studio that supports their games like this. We're 5 years out from release and they just keep on adding expansions, oh, and did I mention they're all free?? No DLC, no micro transactions. Just straight up making the game better and better.
I genuinely couldn't tell if he was joking or not, it simply never entered my mind that he could have been being serious, it was such an absurd thing to say.
"Sean Murray would not like you" guy perfectly demonstrates whats wrong with 95% of traditional games writers. They are people who could not get into real journalism or game development so spend their time trying to get approval from one or the other profession.
Frank Fontaine Honestly the whole videogame journalist scene is just a bunch of butt kissing. Not that much different from 90% of the rest of journalism tbh

the only real difference between No Man's Sky and Driv3r is that driv3r had a very short production time and wanted it pushed out for the christmas market. no man's sky had a sweet 3+ years to make.
I seriously see how PlayStation rushed the launch of this game for the lack of exclusives that year, not caring at all about the studio and their reputation. I'm glad that they didn't give up and kept working on the game to make as great as their vission was despite not being that big of a studio. Thank you, cause I can see how stressfull must have been having such a big company force you to launch something you knew it wasn't finished but that you had a vision of for what you wanted it to be at the end.
There is a player model, sort of... It's speculation, however, game files would indicate at a humanoid figure in game. The model is not used in game, but it is in a near complete state, it includes a helmet, a suit, and textures. Granted games are not without incomplete things, although, I don't think Hello Games would abandon a fully modeled character with most textures complete... FYI, Google is your friend...
He says generic things like: “There are infinite possibilities” “Hahaha” “Everything just works” “You can literally do anything” “Planets are almost infinite” “Anything can happen” “You can destroy anything” Wait a minute...
Yeah, exactly. I mean procedural generation sounds fancy and all, but the tech is not quite there for it to be able to create any visually interesting and real looking levels for a player to meaningfully explore. It only seems to work in games where its only purpose is to create randomized area layouts that serve as a playground for game mechanics, and are thus not a focus of the game. Roguelikes and such.
Procedural generation *can* be done right, if you put time, care, and effort into it. Look at The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall. Masterpiece. This game is *not* doing it right.

the laughing might of seemed natural in the moment but looking back at it he seemed to be shitting his pants with anxiety after each question especially the online ones

If you are going to sell a little indie game as a AAA (hell its even priced as a AAA) you are gonna be judged as a AAA game developer.. These are the consequences..
If the game was $20 or even $30 i would be happy with it. But at $60 it hurts my soul
Andy Ham
exactly! this game would have been much better received if it was sold as what it really is.. a little exploration indie game with random generated planets/maps.. but no... $60.. but lets not forget about the multiplayer lies..

THANK YOU, even before people knew the game was a scam I was just thinking what's the point, even by video game standards
@@TeddyOG valid points my bro
that guy was coked out of his fucking mind, but he was right. sandbox games need more gameplay pillars. you have crafting, gathering, combat, building and character progression. but there also needs to be deep NPC interactivity and base management. more sandbox games need NPCs who do stuff on their own such as develop their own economy and build, explore, fight amongst themselves. as well as the ability for players to create bases/towns and have to manage them with upkeep through power and currency, and bring in NPC functionality into that on top of other players. if sandbox games had all these pillars, that genre would be even bigger than it is now... provided they could get their games to run well and actually not get abandoned in early access.
Yeah I bought the game last week, and it's fantastic. Definitely a good value even at $60.

And all the while, Sky TV has your tiny team constantly embroiled in a lawsuit over having the word "Sky" in the name of your game. _For three years._ How would you handle all that? And if you say you'd handle it fine and not put a single foot wrong, I'll know you're lying.

"You can't see yourself" >because you're too lazy to make a playermodel and that's why players can't see each other
There is a player model, sort of...
It's still not in the game shill

At least Todd released a full damn game.

whats your opinion after worlds part 1?
Procedurally generated.
How about just gimme 10 places where people gave some time to the design.
Ya know.... levels.
I don't know why it bothers you that No Man's Sky's planets are empty and boring rocks. This is true of 99% of planets in the universe.
Procedural generation *can* be done right, if you put time, care, and effort into it. Look at The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall. Masterpiece. This game is *not* doing it right.
Daggerfall was not a masterpiece. Those towns were as boring and pointless as anything else procedurally generated.
Lmfaoooo. I saw this train wreck from miles away. I'm still surprised so many people fell for this. Just goes to show that the majority of people are fucking idiots LOL.
"mean procedural generation sounds fancy and all, but the tech is not quite there" Here's a prime case LOL. It never will be dude. It's all in the name. Learn some math... it's not possible, period.
Going into 2023, this would make a perfect update video for you to make.
I love how when they ask him about the game features he sort of chuckles and looks down at the floor like hes guilty and knows for a fucking fact he has not done any of that shit.

No matter how good the game performs now, everyone should remember: that's how it started.
It's a good thing Sean remembers.
I think Sean Murray and the woman on the Ouya video could come together and market an empty box as a game console.
"Endless possibilities."
You could even put a cat there and it could be dead and alive at the same time.
And have no man's sky as an ouya exclusive.
No mans sky isn't even bad now, its actually pretty dope

Procedurally Generated is a phrase that raises red flags instantly
DavidKFZ Unless the game is a rogue-like (Binding of Isaac, Enter the Gungeon, Spelunky)
DasPoBoy I mean, there’s terraria too.
Not really. Some games like Dwarf Fortress use procedural generation to great effect. Roguelikes in general are very good at it. It's when people use the term "procedural generation" as code for magic that you should get cautious.
Apparently not for most gullible gamers.
What did people think was going to happen, a literal natural selection process? No..
DavidKFZ Starbound is alright
This game is basically ASMR. I never bought the game but i never expected a "fun" gameplay in No Man sky. I just expected relaxing laid back exploring games that i play whenever i raged at competitive games
Yeah. Some games are just ASMR type games. Games you load up and get comfy in your best chair.
gotta admit, this game had a BRILLIANT marketing team
Hell yea. 😂
You mean really good liars.
They're small indie team, I don't think they even have janitors. The community did the "marketing" for them.
