Too bad the game itself is only mediocre at best, and a horrible cash grab with super-aggressive pushing for micro-transactions. Wouldn't recommend. A lot of assets and backgrounds look like they were "inspired by" (read:stolen) from Diablo 3.
At the beginning of the video, I was angry and frustrated, then near the middle I was pitiful and empathetic, and then I was uplifted and hopeful. Then, near the end of the video I was oddly aroused.
I'm seriously surprised they continued after the previous sponsor they did with him 😂 but it doesn't really surprise me, in the end all lazy mobile games like Raid care about is getting their name exposed to as many potential pay-pigs as possible.
im only here to find out why so many people keep telling me "dude you should go back and try No Mans Sky again its better now!" is it? IS IT? no. its got a few more USELESS / FAN SERVICE features (omg wheels! AMAAAZING! omg building things on planets that dont actually have PURPOSE! no one has ever done that before!!!) and a story THAT STILL SUCKS. its still shit. Call me when they make a NEW game.
The fact that he was the ONE man dealing with the entire fallout of one of the biggest internet beatdowns of all time, and sorting every single piece of criticism amazes me. It take a ton of determination and willpower to do that.
I mean even EA... *Eviltronics fArts* itself, was able to redeem themselves a little bit last year by allowing Respawn to publish a good Star Wars single player game with zero BS attached to it. No loot boxes, no overpriced DLC, no nothing. Just... a good game, that you can finish within about 10-15 hours. For 60$. There you go. And I was convinced that company would just eventually implode under the weight of its own greed and die, that nothing good could ever again come out of their damp putrid entrails, and they proved me wrong! If EA can do it, everyone can. Looking at you.... Bethesda. I'm still holding on to sliver of hope that Elder Scrolls 6 and Starfield might be good, if not excellent games. You've always been pretty lazy with polishing out bugs, but Skyrim was an amazing foundation upon which you used to allow everyone to develop mods (including fixes for the aforementioned bugs) that made it into one of the best games of the decade! If we could just pull back to pre-Horse Armor Bethesda, that would be awesome!
The video that convinced me to give it a try and I love it! Stopped playing it for a few months cause it kept crashing around when they did the Utopia expedition, but its been fine since!
Coming back to this again in April 2024, when they've just put out ANOTHER big update, overhauling the look and feel of space stations, and finally allowing starship building and customization! Whatever else one can say about Hello Games, it's beyond obvious that they genuinely care about making No Man's Sky a great game, and always have.
June 2024 and I managed to get a few friends to play it. All of them pretty much agreeing "This game is fun, but we get why you were so worried about telling us about this game in the past" This game is the anime redemption arc of a Main Character.
@@Atlas3060 Right? Like, I've been playing it off and on for probably 4 years now, and even in that time it's added so many features that I would likely find the version I started on somewhat limited and dull now. I would have HATED it if I'd played at launch.

Sean taking the complaints and compiling them into data has to be one of the most big brain moves I've ever seen from a video game designer. That right there immediately earned my respect.
I think a lot of man in the modern age know that feeling except those spoiled brats that were born with a rich daddy and never had to work a single day of their life for anything.
Sure the universe has killed everyone to challenge it so far but if you win the fight you become God. That is to great an opportunity to pass up. Man will prevail.
Say what you want, this is the greatest comeback from a game ever, especially how gaming companies these days disappoint people and don't bother fixing, fair play to Sean and everyone at hello games
It is never gonna stop astounding me that they had every ability to say the Christmas flood took their data, and they didn't. It was such an easy out and they didn't take it. As someone who pre-ordered and was here for the entire thing, hearing that was a sign things might just be okay in the end. Integrity is so rare.
I’m honestly convinced they made the game bad on purpose because they wanted people to drop the hype, which would mean they didn’t get their sales from hype, they EARNED it.
It was such a specific set of circumstances that required a very specific set of actions from the team for it all to work perfectly. A truly inspiring story that hopefully never has to happen again.
Actually it's not copyrighted. As he states in the video, it's trademarked which is different. A trademark is basically a precise definition of what constitutes your brand and are used to stop fraudsters impersonating the genuine brand and discourage brands with similar brands from being similar to make it easier for customers to tell them apart. Sky's basically saying "you can't call your game Sky because people will confuse it with us" or that the fonts, colours, etc resemble their brand. This is of course, hilariously not true as Hello Games isn't even a rival in the same industry as Sky and the 2 properties' branding are as similar as Crash Bandicoot and Doom. Chances are Sky just wanted to exercise their trademark to show the courts they actually use it as not using it enough can lead to a trademark being revoked or make their prosecution weaker when they find someone actually worth going after. And they probably had a loophole or something working in their favour, like how here in the UK supermarket own brand cola has very, very similar branding to Coke Cola but gets away with it because the colours and fonts aren't close enough to what Coke Cola's trademark defines as their particular shade of red for a lawyer to be needed.
I find it too, the most stupid thing on planet earth! If I make a game called Adam's Apple, will Apple actually sue me, as well? If the game would have been called simply "Sky", BUT it is called "No man's sky"! How on planet earth and all planets and stars in this world, CAN YOU SUE SOMEONE FOR THAT? Does the shitty company also sue people for using "Sky's the limit", in their songs, now????????? Shit! Sorry, Biggie! It wasn't me! This puts the last nail in the coffin! I HAVE LOST HOPE IN HUMANITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gonna buy the game and fly away, Earth................... Bye................................................................................ Do not try and see what I am doing............................ I am still here :)
Gotta give the guy huge props for going through all of that stress and still sticking with it to improve the game even more than initial expectations. Also his Wife for having 3 kids and also sticking it out during all that extra pressure. Good, strong people, thats for sure.
He still lied and sold an incomplete game that the majority of players abandoned before it was fixed. It’s great that he buckled down and spent time and money fixing it but at the end of the day he still profited from deception, and the majority of players who abandoned the early game who couldn’t get refunds.
@@washboardman7435 and yet, if you do that, you throw away your best chance at reaching a large market. How many indie games (or AAA games for that matter) can you think of that got large market PR keeping quiet and not publicizing until release? Also, Hello Games made bank off the people who bought in initially, which gave them room to develop. If they hadn't moved copies that first year, the updates would have never come.
@@chell272 I didn't write not to publicize until release, I wrote don't talk to the press until you have your beta ready. Beta testing is after development: you're less likely to do what Murray did and promise a bunch of things journos will puff up. Teasing with pre-alpha footage is fine. Plus, while it's what you look for in a company for Hello Games to fix their mess, and bro-tier they released features not even promised along with the bug fixes and promised stuff, they don't want to make a reputation out of releasing something belonging to early access as a finished game then fixing it.
@@washboardman7435 while I appreciate your clarification, my statement stands regardless. Hello Games bet on themselves, got mainstream recognition, and then built to meet expectations after the fact. Sean Murray's is a winner's tale.
Sean Murray is a personal hero of mine. There is no better example of what to do when you’ve made a mistake. You don’t make excuses, you don’t blame anyone else, you simply own up to it and make it right. It takes a lot of courage to do that.

I`d say it`s better than most movies that have come out lately. It has everything a good story needs: Character development, a goal to strive for and the struggle to go with it, a nice happy ending and lastly, a little love story.
And the game has gotten even more insane over the next four years. New races, settlements, boss battles, expeditions, freighter combat, squadrons, rebuilding the engine from the ground up, water physics, better space stations, ship customisation, the list goes on. No one can fault Sean Murray, he has my sympathy, and my respect. Best game developer to ever exist.
Sean Murray isn't a little lying rat fuck though. I think he legitimately tried to produce a good game but he had such little experience and a small team that he didn't have the time or money to do what he wanted initially.

Hello Games: apologizes and makes the game way better Bethesda: LIGHT WOOD LAMINATE LIGHT WOOD LAMINATE LIGHT WOOD LAMINATE LIGHT WOOD LAMINATE LIGHT WOOD LAMINATE
I've watched this video several times over the years, primarily because your comedy is timeless and never gets old. But also because I love how you go about this story, it's so well done and absolutely 💯 % correct. Fortunately as write this. Sean Murray and hello games/no man's sky have been not only completely redeemed but been a shining example of what every game developer SHOULD do when, despite best efforts or intentions, release an unfinished game. Like fall out 76 for example. Unfortunately, this story is the exception to the rule. The only reason it's a redemption story is because the entire team genuinely cares for its creation and despite how it was realized. They took the beatings like a world champ, made no promises, in fact they said nothing and just began DELIVERING. Actions speak louder than words has never rang so true. In fact everytime this happens nowadays and we get promised a shiny AAA game but get a shiny turd instead, after they've excepted our money, what do they do? They apologize but promise to fix everything in future updates, or "seasons" but then charge you for it....ugh...nvm....I love this story and I love how you portray Sean, I wish he could see this video.

The big reason I believed in this game, was in one of his interviews he talked a lot about how he was trying to make the game he wanted to play. He was so sincere about his love of sci fi and what he wanted out of it, and I'm pretty sure that's why he never quit - He still wants his perfect game to play. The cool thing is, since it's procedurally generated... He may get to play his game, super perfected someday, and still not know exactly what's going to happen. Even AFTER all this development. That's pretty awesome in it's own right. A weird, video game sci fi business love story, if you will. :)
Yeah, no doubt. A huge problem with that whole press run leading up to the game's release was that Sean is a handsome guy. That's an instant strike one. No one likes a handsome guy going around looking all handsome and answering questions. So at the first sign of trouble when people realized the game needed work everyone realized he had nothing to offer them they seen him for what they thought he was: just a handsome, physically fit man. And there's nothing fun or funny about that, no siree.
@@johnnybensonitis7853 what the f are you even Talking about? „No one likes a handsome guy going around answering questions.“ Dude are you high or something? The problem wasn’t that he looked to good or whatever you even mean by that. First a good appearances and confidence are actually two vital parts of a good marketing person. The problem was he lied throughout the entire marketing campaign and the Game didn’t just „need work“. You make it sound like the game had minor launch issues and wasn’t a bug infested mess with barley any content with years of work ahead before it became playable. He promised the world, delivered shit and people got mad. Not complicated and it had nothing to do with his looks. No idea were your no one likes handsome people philosophy comes from, but society works exactly the other way around.

He had a moral code everyone thought he didn't have. We all thought he was a smug con-artist while he was in fact suffering for 3 years. I wouldn't be able to deal with that pressure, but he did it and kept working even after he had the money to set him for life. Seems like an honorable man after all.
This really show that they just liked making games and things just got bad real quick Nonetheless I'm happy that they never gave up, did the right thing and after this video I might just buy this game
The fact Murray didn't die from stress is incredible. And this game, today, is something I cherish greatly. Truly an incredible amount of dedication to the game.
A huge amount of dedication to lying about it while they were shilling it, too. I never bought this garbage, and I'm glad I didn't. But this guy cheated you.

Cosmic radiation, the extremely cold vacuum of space, planets that could crush you with the weight of their atmosphere... Yeah, it’s definitely fighting us. We just have a parent called “Earth” that’s sticking up for us, whom we seem to be intent on killing for corporate gain.
Actually, Sean's reaction - to treat all the complaints and bitching and whining as data - is pure fucking genius. Genuinely genius. Because, like, who the hell does that? No-one else even thinks that. But it's a next level strategy. As that one episode of Star Trek had it, "turn disadvantage into advantage" - every complaint becomes a data point on a graph that charts how to turn it all around. He kept listening to the audience, even when they were freaking out and sending him death threats. He still kept listening. And channelled out of it exactly what people were expecting, extracted a plan out of it and then implemented that plan perfectly. Suppressing his own ego to a level that would make even a Vulcan jealous. He deserves a fucking award for that alone, frankly. It's really fucking hard and it's really fucking clever. That Chess move is god tier, basically.
Sean tanking all the hate, criticism, everything so his team could work without worry is the most Chad thing. Seriously, mad props to sift through everything and improve the game with the criticism and not just ignore or blatently lie or insult your playerbase.
It's funny, because where I'm from calling someone a chad is basically calling them basic and a dude-bro-guy meathead jock. Here you seem to be using it the way the UK uses the word "legend". I agree though that was like a 400iq play to keep morale up with his team.

The story of Sean is one of the most inspiring and humbling story’s I’ve ever heard. I’m not a game developer, but I did screw up in a relationship, and was demonized for my mistakes for a year now, however, just like Sean, I didn’t reach out to the one who left me, I didn’t bug them, all I did and am still doing is working on myself, and I’ve gained much more happiness than the depression I was in for the first couple months of my breakup. My point is that if someone like Sean, who disappointed everyone, can pick himself back up and reach success, anyone can do it, anyone can change and be the best version of themselves, it just takes time, and self love.
Hello Games is a company that should be studied by PR majors as one of THE WORST examples of PR and one of THE BEST examples of PR. I'm baffled that I can say this about one company. Props to Sean and Hello Games.

Missing a ton of what was initially advertised. Con artists are allowed to roam free in this unregulated, wild west industry. I watch this every 6-8 months. Not even a massive NMS fan (although it’s awesome in PSVR2 now). I just love the whole story of genuine redemption so much.
The story is so good that people forget that the game isn't actually good yet. It still suffers from the god awful gameplay 'loop' which has gone mostly unchanged since launch.
Chugg It’s a game about space exploration and base building. Didnt you know what you were getting yourself into before you decided to play it? Geez some people need Arthur fleck to tell them another joke.
Kool-Aid Man At launch it was not a game about base building. It was never advertised to have anything of the sort. And it doesn’t really add anything to the gameplay loop of “Go to a planet, get materials, build a fuel cell, upgrade your things, go to a new system, rinse and repeat”. Not a very fun gameplay loop especially when the economy is useless, the language system is counterintuitive to where you can still answer correctly to a question you, in character, cannot fathomably answer, space battles/quarrels are inconsequential, I still see the same wildlife types on different planets (that has to do with the not-so-advanced LEGO styled proc-gen system for that), and the game is very ‘on-the-nose’ about its exploration where there has to be some kind of waypoint to take me to a location because there’s nothing interesting elsewhere. Everything they’ve added thus far is just padding to the currently awful gameplay loop. No way this game is good yet. When those problems are fixed, which seems less and less likely considering their direction, I will call No Man’s Sky a good game. It may never live up to the $60 hype.

You start to realize that you won't be able to make the deadline. You're recruiting for your team as fast as possible and it nearly triples in size, but it's not enough. Now Sony is breathing down your neck with a contracted date. If you ask for more time, people will expect more from the game, but if you don't, you will have nothing to deliver. A seasoned Developer found Gaben sitting in a grove of two trees. "Oh wise Gaben, I come to you for guidance; I have made big games and small games, good games and bad games, but I do not know what to do when they receive negative reviews!" After a short weight, Gaben spoke thus: "If you fear receiving negative reviews, why release a game at all?" It was then the seasoned Developer was Enlightened.
As an indie game developer, it's inspiring to hear about their comeback. I had NMS pre ordered on day one and was disappointed. I still play it today and it's like a totally different game now. Sean's a legend for that comeback
Bethesda is doing something about it, they are adding NPCs, brand new locations, and a bunch of new features. Basically an entire rework. I hope it’s good
What's insulting to this game is that bethesda is actually using this kind of success story to excuse their hot garbage. "It's about what the game becomes."
From yesterday's patch notes: "A number of recipe costs have been rebalanced to reduce grind gameplay, and terrain resource deposits now yield a more generous supply of metal." So even if Bethesda isn't willing to learn from their mistakes, it seems as though Hello Games is willing to learn from Bethesda's.
Can we just talk about how they went from making 2 platforming games and a mobile game to making a literal pocket universe that’s constantly getting changes and updates.

I love how we casually live in a world where the word “sky” is ~copyrighted~ trademarked.
Edit: trademark instead of copyright
That corporate for you
You just got copyright claimed :P
@@PlebNC You're right, but still, Sky really tried to make it like the word belongs to them

Yeah, it's the cautionary tale of why you actually do need PR guys and to stay the fuck away from publishers and journos until you're ready for beta.

He's seen it!
Sean just seems like a really humble, good dude that probably couldn't sleep knowing people were so disappointed with his game.
wow the image of him trying to sleep at night those first couple nights is so depressing
@@cedar6794 yeah I sure as hell wouldn't be able to. I got a lot of respect for the dude, even if the way he acts makes me cringe sometimes lol.
And I bet he sleeps better than most of us now :P
Sean's relentless introverted-ness both caused the crisis and fixed it.
True
Inquisitor Shu Sean’s is a legend, they locked themselves in a bad situation, flooding, the worst critics getting hammered down their throats and they still decided to continue foward with a project that might never come back from the negativity
Great way to put it.
He had a moral code everyone thought he didn't have.
We all thought he was a smug con-artist while he was in fact suffering for 3 years. I wouldn't be able to deal with that pressure, but he did it and kept working even after he had the money to set him for life. Seems like an honorable man after all.
This really show that they just liked making games and things just got bad real quick
Nonetheless I'm happy that they never gave up, did the right thing and after this video I might just buy this game
The fact Murray didn't die from stress is incredible. And this game, today, is something I cherish greatly. Truly an incredible amount of dedication to the game.

"If the universe is so big then why won't it fight me???" is the greatest question ever asked in my opinion.
Cosmic radiation, the extremely cold vacuum of space, planets that could crush you with the weight of their atmosphere... Yeah, it’s definitely fighting us. We just have a parent called “Earth” that’s sticking up for us, whom we seem to be intent on killing for corporate gain.
A question first posed by Gurren Lagann.
haha, brilliant
It already is and it's winning.
Nah, is math rated to science is soooooo much better.
Especially the fact he did that while the studio was being hit with unimaginable stress with things like constant hate mail, death threats, etc etc
And he kept quiet and did what needs to be done instead of lashing out at his customers. Truly revolutionary.
Fixing what people complain about? Fucking genius.

It’s a game about space exploration and base building.
