Sidekicks for MMA are underrated. You don’t have to be Wonderboy with them but having that option from a more broader, bladed stance which allows for better takedown defense too is nice. There’s a reason Sanda fighters use side kicks instead of the Teep/push kick like the Thais, they have takedowns to defend, and a side kick serves the same purpose as the Teep from that stance.

This is something I intuited too, muay thai is a great atriking art but i think people often cobflate its stylistic effectiveness with its training style. There so much in karate that can work if you train the moves like the thais do.

    • @justsomebird4285
      @justsomebird4285 Рік тому +7

@@theserpentofmendes Yeah if you simply train and adapt it for the intensity and context you want to apply it to the stuff that doesn’t work and that has become trivial over time due to formality and marketing and what not will be thrown aside and what works will quickly be revealed. I’ve found merit in my TKD background that I use when I’m striking, and while it isn’t the sole striking style I use, it shouldn’t be; no one should go into MMA as a pure boxer or Thai boxer or Karateka. They should go in as a Mixed Martial Artist.

True. And in my opinion, the sanda side kick is way more effective than the teep in term of “pushing”

I use an orthodox stance, so one of my personal setups is to jab, low right sweep, then side kick with my lifted right leg. I try and angle my foot inwards to sell the sweep and then kick out afterwards. This is a technique you see in a lot of Chinese martial arts i.e. Shaolin Quan, but I personally feel like Jeff's setups are more deceptive than mine. Great vid!

A bit random, but an old favorite of mine was using my front leg for a teep, pushing off and letting the leg land back in southpaw as I shift into the "defensive side kick" (#2). It would stuff their momentum a bit, and give an opportunity to add a bit more angle to the step back so the sidekick could target the solar plexus or liver more easily

I don’t know who started the whole “side kicks don’t work” thing, because they’re the technique I land the most percentage wise as well as being one of the most effective. Mind you, this is generally against slow moving, flat-stanced and exclusively trained Muay Thai or kickboxing fighter… it’s just not really part of their arsenal, and they’re poorer for it. However, it’s been a long time since I’ve sparred with a karate or TKD fighter, so that might be quite a different story.
So yeah, I really appreciate this video and your display of how many ways it can work. It’s not to mention also a low feint setting up a side kick to the head too, which is quite hard to block let alone catch.
Hail the mighty side kick! Criminally underrated kick, but I guess those of us that know its effectiveness have the advantage against those that don’t think it works 🤷🏻‍♂️

The last set up ive been making work in muay thai, its a really effective roundkick fake cos you can step and do the arms, but ive noticed for me that while if you angle off like the set up before you can do a full side kick, youre best off doing a thai side kick with the ball of your foot if youre going straigh forward cos you end up pushing off them instead of driving into them if you try with the heel

Jeff, also, at some point you'll also learn that after finishing a side-kick, whether it lands or not, you're in a prime position to hit a spinning hook kick (with your other foot) OR spinning back-fist / spinning elbow that your opponent will *almost* *always* lower his hands for because he thinks you're going to hit him with a turning back-kick. It depends on whether they stayed close or leapt out of range of the original sidekick. You can practice this in sparring by pulling it a bit short so you don't knockout your partner; but their eyes will still light up because their life flashed before their eyes!

JEFF you've got to listen to me!!!!
You're adding side kicks to your arsenal, you've already learned how to mix them in as single-shot attacks, as counters, and with set-ups.... Well..... the next thing you will be excited to learn is......
ALMOST ALL OF THESE SET-UPS WORK FOR side-kicks to the face, and lead-leg hook kicks. So many of your ''failed attempts'' were because your opponents had their hands down to semi-defend the side-kick. In almost all of those cases you could have gone from the exact same chambered lead-leg position into a lead hook kick, a sidekick to the head, or a karate-style snapping roundhouse kick to the head. ESPECIALLY that lead-pendulum! Trust me, I land these on Aaron at Olympus all the time ;)
I truly hope you hear what I'm saying, and HAVE FUN!

It annoys me that when people say side kicks dont work in mma but esp in muay thai, what theyre saying without realising is it does work as a primary weapon. Side kicks in muay thai work, but not if you use it like karate guys use it like we use a teep because its a bad position to be in for round kicks and sweeps. However BECAUSE it can only be thrown from bad positions its a phenominal insurance policy for when you find yourself out of position. That side kick or even back kicks gonna be very useful when you miss that round kick n they think youre just meat for them to snack on

@@MMAShreddedthe one that might work for higher level sparring would be the fake hook or hook thrown to spinning back kick. I saw this thrown by Wayne li who is gabriel varga and my sensei from seikido. He performs it better than me. I remember you learning kicks with Seth and how quick you picked them up. Your kicks are looking sick. The one thing I really am shocked by is your slipping and head movement. So very good. I'm sure you're working on your abductor and quad muscles a Lot force yourself kicks. Side kick is looking good. I like the leg kick to side kick one, the failed comp was not much of a failed comp on that one. Lastly, roundhouse to spinning back kick and my favorite of all time, if you can check it out, I promise you this lands every single fkin time. It's the inside spinning hook kick. If you watch never back down 2 where Michael jalal white fights with handcuffs on at the end he is fighting the last cop, he throws this spinning hook kick while he is in close, it's impossible to see it coming and it always lands without fail. See if you can find a way to put more hip or power into it or be accurate with it. Good luck. That would be a good video. And I promise no one will defend it.

@@MMAShredded second last kick he throws at 2:16, yes its a real kick not hard to throw and always always lands. Sometimes I get shit for hitting back of head but like 2 out of 7 times

I can see some real conditioning potential with that last one. You think a low kick or a round house is coming. Nope. Side kick to your chest.

Those last two im not a fan of.
Second to last, youre out of position. I think its better to just side kick with the other leg as the second kick
The last one...as a TKD guy, we would jam the kick. Stepping into it vs trying to avoid. It telegraphs itself.
All said, great video and ALWAYS learn more than i can retain watching your videos
