Just came back from two private lessons with Jeff Chan aka MMAShredded in-person! His private lessons are also exactly the way they seem in his videos, and he is a great teacher, very detail-oriented and patient. While also getting some serious workouts in, it was very educational to get practical feedback on my technical flaws and what I can drill to improve. If you can get to the Brooklyn area and want to learn MMA, train with him! He genuinely wants to help people improve, and will treat you like a friend! Thanks again to Jeff Chan for having me again! As both a professional MMA fighter and BJJ black belt, he teaches his own go-to moves which are effective because they are backed by personal experience and are pressure/stress tested, rather than just pedaling classic or traditional rhetoric. That's more than can be said for most martial arts instructors.
Though I never set foot in his gym, I bought Jeff's striking course and can attest to his commitment to guidance. Jeff actively responds to queries arising mid-workout and goes above and beyond, offering advice proactively whenever he perceives a need.
Those karate combat guys are always so explosive and dynamic. It reminds me of some of the Oly TKD competitors I used to spar with, but with better hands. Someone who is that active and movement oriented is going to be hard to shut down. Also, the big guy has a very unique long guard. This was a fun vid to watch!
I am always really impressed by Jeff's sparing abilities. It doesn't matter what style his opponents use; he knows how to defend himself and look for opportunities and vulnerabilities.
Makes sense. Muy thai is almost the best for striking. Only weakness being heavy on the back foot to defend takedowns , no takedowns to worry about in this one.
@@Nizaar1 the octagon proves what's works and what doesn't. Right now kickboxing is the best for striking because the top champs are using that. Fight nerds speculate we would see more muy thai but there are cultural reasons we don't as well as that heaviness on the back foot.
@@Slycoop Calling kickboxing a martial art is like calling MMA a martial art. Kickboxing just means kicking and punching, which can mean karate, muay thai, taekwondo etc.
Man seeing all the cool combos and little tactics and counters and recounters made me want to start training again. Big guy was extremely creative and had a super sick clinch game. Inspirational vid. Mike got me with the thumbnail bait lol
I'm not skilled enough to throw spin kicks with that speed without losing control. I'd probavly end up hurting myself and my sparring partners. That's some impressive dexterity on Gabriel's part.
Being a 2-time national champ in Sanda might explain some of it, that's an exceptionally dynamic sport from what little I know about it. Throwing convincing kicks without getting caught (and dumped on your head) for it in Sanda is REALLY hard!
DUDE! ICY MIKE WITH THE CAMEO! 🤣🤣🤣 It's always amazing to see that, even at your level, you're still learning, Jeff! Also, your Pad Holding course is doing wonders for me and my team mates at the gym, so, as usual, thank you for being you! 😁
Change is good for us, haha! I love this one. I am obsessed with karate combat. Super impressed with your versatility Jeff, and your ability to quickly adapt. The whack-a-mole approach in the recent short with the headband guy was great but this one is really intelligent and cerebral, I love it. Next step, take it to the combat pit! haha.
Such a good sparring sesion! Loved that Gabriel kicks, that was a cool and useful way to use taekwondo in sparring. Jeff adapting as usual, that's what I call footwork, man!
Love your videos, jeff! Such a joy to see these high level yet very controlled sparrings. Keep up the great work, brother! We learn a lot from you and enjoy your content!
Great upload! Was great to see the other guys utilising a lot of karate kicks which is something I've been trying to add in my Muay Thai and MMA. Definitely game changing!

Watching Brandon pull off the cross arm guard is pretty cool to see. You don’t see it much anymore, and theres probably not a lot of coaches who can properly train it except for someone like Tim Witherspoon.
I was worried about those spinning heel kicks and even that rolling thunder gabriel threw, looks like of full speed. If one of those lands.....OMG 😅 But burst into laughter after saw jeff's signature sure-kill move at 0:17

Intercepting a jab with a calf kick is extremely effective and not too difficult to time either. I love that Grabriel showed it here. Some fighters won't even pick up on that but then they'll start to jab less. A lot of people are conditioned to throw out jabs before any big moves too, so this is a good way to make them hesitate a bit. If you can't get a good leading foot in, then you're not going to throw powerful punches.
6:50 so speaking of getting tired. When you're tired especially in the shoulders and its harder to use the long guard.. what defense technique would you recommend?
side kick, axe kick and spinning hook kicks are all so underrated kicks that not many use. Good tools if you train them enough and know how to use them in live sparring. Super cool to see it in use
So LOVE the “switch March” or whatever you call it. Usually I just fake one or two knees or teeps and walk forward (I’m tall and long and known for wanting to clinch knee) even people way more skilled and experienced stop dead if I do that lol. Saves my life sometimes 😅
Is it just me but were a couple of the techniques that Gabriel was throwing, after a seminar, were wildly inappropriate at the speed and force he was throwing them. Like you are controlling your knees but why when this dude is throwing rolling thunders and heel kicks will full force at your head…
Karate Combat is a really interesting fight sport. Originally it kinda just seemed like kickboxing-lite but it's really evolved into its own thing that sits alongside kickboxing/muay thai and MMA.
