  • In this guide I go over how to look at an army and understand it's strengths and weaknesses. I also go over understanding maps at a glance and what I feel are armies best suited for different maps. I finally illustrate some of my points on the battlefield breaking down a replay. I hope you guys enjoy and will like, favorite, share and subscribe. Please leave a comment below sharing your tactics and strategy or asking questions. A shout out to HDGamingTurtle who has asked for this guide about three times! I hope it's everything you wanted.

Thank you so much for this video! This is a high quality standard-setting example among many bad UA-cam channels!
    The things I really like:
    1. Your intro is not 2,000,000 deciBels louder than your dialogue like so many obnoxious videos with terrible sound.
    2. Your voice is loud and clear (majorly important)
    3. You do not ramble or blab or get so far off track that I turn off the video. You are concise, precise, and to-the-point.
    4. You actually explain this Total War game in a way that is understandable to new players, unlike so many other UA-camrs.
    5. Your advice makes a lot of sense, logically, and I can tell that you're a right-minded player with great advice to follow.
    6. It's less than 30 minutes (not crucial, but nice).
7 (bonus). Your tips are organized by their function in the game, and it is a highly logical and sensible way to organize them. I love it!!!
Thank You, Sir, for this great video.

You're very welcome :) I hate most game videos on UA-cam because they're such low quality, so it was really nice and refreshing (and uplifting) to see this video. It's all around, really well made and it's wonderful to see.
I just made my very first UA-cam video last night, actually! I'm a beginning Minecraft mod author and started a channel at another location so I can upload mod demos, tutorials, and programming tutorials.
I also plan on starting another channel to teach people audio engineering for UA-cam content makers. I went to college for audio engineering and love to do the pro stuff, but I find the biggest need for audio education is in the home video studio department - a lot of UA-cam videos just have junk audio.
However, yours was refreshingly wonderful. I was impressed with the audio and will be coming back for more videos because of it!
I'm also very good at high-end audio editing, as I do a lot of audio forensics and restoration, so if you or any other UA-camrs you know ever want to learn some really good audio editing techniques, just let me know :) I will warn you though - the software required can cost hundreds. But the increase in quality is hundred-thousand fold.

+Nerdicus Nerdly it's super cool to hear how my audience is so wide and so widely skilled. I look forward to learn more on how to edit my audio from your channel. Let me know when you set it up. Pro tip: do one channel at a time and stay regular. I am bad at the second part since I own a video production company and I get busy but still lol

My usual tactics (land) would be to invest in quality infantry, stack up my cavalry, and have half as many missile troops as infantry. Also weapons like a ballista that’s can deal damage from afar (at least one or two) is always good to weather some troops before they close the distance.

Something I completely didn't realize about slingers is how useful they are compared to all other missile units. Great range, shields, plenty of shots. Bane of archers, even mounted archers, as well as the flanks of infantry. I'm playing a versus campaign with a friend, I am Macedon and he is Scythia, so I guess I should plan on spending a lot of time having my hoplites sit under missile fire.

I've been wrecking face this time as macedon. I usually try to keep food surplus at about 75 because when I'm upgrading settlements that cover half the map, my food has dropped by like 40 in a single turn. Only problem is my eastern friends keep asking me to go to war against my own client state every other turn.

So am I correct in saying that Cavalry is used most advantageously when moving on a charge or initiating a fight from the rear, or the flank of an enemy unit? I seem to find that when cavalry gets locked down and put in a long engagement they seem to do much worse because of that. I'm new to this style of game by the way, loving it so far. These videos are a massive help. Thank you!

    • @Hylorchannel
      @Hylorchannel  10 років тому +14

Your very welcome! Some cav is meant for using their charge bonus (shock cav) and others are meant for both shock and sustain. The best use over all is to lock down a unit with infantry first then small flanks and rear with cav. Only time I engage my cav directly is if I know the infantry will break quickly and easily.

Cavalry isn't supposed to be engaged in long combat, it's supposed to do hit-and-run tactics just to harass the hostile troops and lower their morale.
Unless of course you have a heavy anti-infantry cavalry dedicated to cut down running troops.

What is the main differences of uses with melee infantry vs spear infantry vs pike infantry? It seemed to be more pronounced in something like Shogun 2. In Rome 2, for instance, it seems like spear infantry doesn't have the same effect against cavalry like it did in Shogun 2. Triarii vs Praetorian Guard for instance. Why would I use one over the other?

Send cav in to kill the archers especially ones that have the fire arrow ability. After that just send your elephants in to take out the infantry. If you dont take out the archers first your elephants will die out pretty quickly.

That's what I do, however I'd like to know a way to fight the AI properly case I want a chance. Like land battles, I invade a town with great troops yet the balance shows they got superiority with just one army and the garrison army, yet somehow my forces win that with basic strategy that is easily exploitable as well. Ridiculous, Legendary dificultie and you can just stand there with the javelins on the border and watch the enemy suffer heavy losses to them as they just stand there and replace.

Generally when I start a new game I spend a lot of turns building my economy, cities and technology along with my armies. I don't attack anybody until I feel I'm strong enough to do so. Here is the frustrating part. I'm continually attacked by Italian rebels along with 2-3 other factions. I can't hold any conquered territories because of the back to back attacks on multiple fronts. The armies that attack me ALWAYS outnumber me by 2-1, I can't get reinforcements to units besieged because yup they get ambushed. If I abandon the territories and fall back to consolidate my Legions I'm attacked. I'm CONSTANTLY outnumbered and inevitably Rome Falls! It's gotten to the point where it's not fun to play when I can't even hold territories from minor factions. Again I've tried diplomacy, trade, military alliances etc etc etc. NOTHING WORKS! It's almost pointless to play it when I know I'm gonna lose and it's Never a question of if, only when. Any advice would be much appreciated as at this point im about to just toss the game in the trash.

Michael V If you are not doing multiplayer then get the no into upkeep mod. If you are maybe be more patient with expansion idk I suck at the politics mostly. But the no upkeep helps a ton and makes the campaign way more fun since all your armies will be full stacks

some tips. Don't use forced march often. Don't be conservative when it comes to military recruitment buildings, have one in at least every province, it makes it easy to build up a reactionary force wherever your forces are. Don't neglect public order, and if a province rebels, stamp it out quickly before it gets too big. Don't expand too quickly, especially if your having trouble. Set yourself up for success whenever possible with overwhelming force and/or using spies to deadly affect with poison. Autoresolve as little as possible as you'll lose less men this way. Early campaign for Rome you shouldn't declare war on Epirus or Syracuse until you've dealt with most of Carthage. Take Cisilpine Gaul quickly and don't expand too quickly until you feel confident enough to move into France. Carthage won't be easy to fight, but it can be done with enough focus and armies. Don't go straight for the big cities, squeeze them dry first. These are only a few, hope they help you out. If you need anything else, my steam is Doggo Does a Game, we can do a multiplayer campaign sometime if you want.

And do yourself a huge favor and download both Technology time reduced to half as well as some Mercenary upkeep reduction mods, and if you like Roster expansions Sebidee's unit mods and Radious's unit mods

Michael V You should conquer the territory to the north of Italy and the Syracuse province(Glass to trade and Syracuse grain if i can recall well) and. Then make trade agreements and dont upgrade all buildings at once, meanwhile level up your agents (they are so op) and build your armies (At first you could autoresolve everything with full hastatis -thats what i do hence those starting units are shit and boring). If you decided to use autoresolve use it until you see fit (in my case until i can recruit cretan archers hence they are fun) then i use manually on the ones that are not that easy to win

oh the rest of your army body is made up of praetorian guard, really... praetorian guard are one of the most OP units in the game they will destroy most other swordsmen and are more then a match for strong hoplites you should have had armored legionaries of evacoti cohorts.
