See now if anyone has played the RTW remaster now, it's good but it's still just RTW with a modern texture polish & ui overhaul. In my personal opinion and I love Medieval 2 as much as anybody, but I do NOT think a Medieval 2 remake will be able to top the hard work that the modding team of 1212AD have done on Atilla.
@karo tref sounds stupid but its kind of the most modern for a historical total war player. Three kingdoms and Troy went to far in the "hero units" aspect it doesn't even feel like a total war game and Atilla isn't everyone's cup of tea not to mention it runs a lot worse then Rome 2 unfortunately or I would be playing 1212 mod on it. your other options are all older then 7 years
I like Rome 2 in the fact that the scale feels larger with the garrisons and able to play with double size armies. It feels more alive with the factions like the world is more populated
Not gonna lie, ROME II does change my life as well. When I saw your fan-made Seleucid and Pyrrhic War trailers 7 years ago, those videos have inspired me to make history-related videos and it still lives up! Honestly, sometimes I kept coming back watching your old videos for the sake of nostalgia! Note: For any of yous who are new sub to this channel, I recommend watching his old cinematic stuff especially his Pyrrhic War intro. It still ages well!
This gonna sound odd, but one of the things I love more about Rome II is the voice models, they really hype me up. In other Total War the soldiers seem "too calm", but I love that sometimes when you select a unit it says in a motivated way "ROMA INVICTA" , "FOR MAKEDON" , "BAAL HAMMON HAS BLESSED US".
@@happycompy Yeah the barbarian voices are terrible in rome 2. Voice acting in rome 1 was much better in my opinion, especially the dude that voiced the roman speeches.
@@happycompy Total war Attila is also amazing game, you have 2 of the greatest mods ever made 1: Rise of Mordor which is a remake of Third age mode and 2: Seven Kingdoms mod which is Game of Thrones , also Attila has better blood and death animations then Rome 2
Would you say that Divide et Impera is the best way to play Rome 2? I never managed to click with Rome 2, although I loved Rome 1 and pretty much every other Total war. Any advice?
Antiquity does feel foreign in many ways, but to me, it also feels more akin to our modern world. The importance of republics, politics, philosophy and culture over just religion, institutions over individuals, wars for profit instead of religion, etc. I think it’s that balance of familiarity in an unfamiliar world that makes me love the ancient setting. And also the legions and hoplites look really cool.
Wow that was really well said. You know, I never thought of it like that...the similarities to our modern world. Like you alluded to, maybe that's what makes it so relatable? It's fantastical yet familiar in some ways as well.
But you also have to think that most republics or democracies back then have almost nothing in common with our modern form of it. The population of Athens for instance was made up vastly of slaves and only a small part were actually considered citizens. Also in the middle ages most wars were fought for lets say pragmatic reasons + a religious background.
That's because after the downfall of Christianity as an ideology they needed to take something as base, so people copied the ancient world on purpose. Funnily enough it's ending up the same way it did back then.
Shogun II for me. Strategic, tactical, multi-layered, seiges are great, naval combat is different and at least good - and surprisingly quite optional, the entire map uniting against you just as you are about to turn into that "late game steam roller" is well done, and it has ninjas!!
Shogun 2 and Rome 2 will always have a place in my heart. I wish they kept Shogun 2's "drop in battles" even though 29 times out of 30 you'll just end up being dropped in a battle hopelessly outmatched by your human opponent, but there are the odd fair fights and even the lopsided defeats are strangely fun, despite being curbstomped in "regular" multiplayer not being very fun.
So proud of Bulgaria and the people in CA Sofia that they actually managed to do something cool. I saw that Total War Saga Troy has been developed by CA Sofia and I think it's a solid game as well
Algorithm blessed me with this video 10 months later. As a fellow content creator I wholeheartedly agree with you on this video. After getting frustrated with WH3 I came back to Rome 2 and it just feels like home despite its problems. I’ve played TWW2 for so long I forgot how good it feels to play a historical total war. You’ve earned this sub and I appreciate your work.
I grew up with rome1, Rome2 had to wait until I was able to open up to, but once I got it, years after launch, patched, fixed… damn, it’s a work of art. I can say playing as any faction gets you so attached to it to a level not even rome1 did. Yeah, it’s way more accessible and one lost army can be replenished pretty fast, money is pouring way easier etc. But There’s a feeling of passion coming from this game. A love that allowed the devs fixing it to make it arguably one of the most successful late success stories. I tip my hat to them.
Well Rome II has : -Big uniques cities wich level visual changes according to its tiers -Big armies on the field so you feel like you have 2 actual armies encountering each other -Awesome matched sync animations between models wich is immersive af and is no more in modern TW -Each units have their officer and banner -Army can evolve through won battles thanks to the xp system -Lots of diplomacy options -Lots of differents factions with differents playstyle -Stamina and moving carefully your units matters because you don't have nukes, magic, machineguns and everyone being a marathonian like in newer games
I'm playing Rome 2 every now and then. I came back to it everytime I got bored. There is something special about the era that fascinates me. Made me feel like a roman emperor, a senator a rebellious roman general or even a devious pharaoh. It's what I feel everytime I play Rome 2.
As of now, 1878 hours I've sunk into this game on Steam. It has kept me coming back since it's release and still does. Endless replayability with the diversity of factions and units, often quite difficult strategy and economic management keeps it challenging and the setting is the most interesting of any Total War game. The mods then elevate the game to legendary status.
@@lazystahlhelm5243 Yeah, just wish they didn't just up and abandon it lol...If my computer can run WH2: Mortal Empire smoothly, it "should" be able to run this relatively old game. CA is lazy lol
Rome 2 has seen my funnest TW battle Managing a Parthian horse archer army against 2 other armies in an ambush It ended up a decisive/close victory I think I still have an image of it lemme check Edit: yeah it was 1000 of my troops (mostly horse archers) ambushed by 3000. Won killing 2500 and only losing 300
Yeah, I really like Rome 2. I suffered at launch, but so few games really allow you to divide and conquer the map like Rome does (As Romans.) Getting to play as Octavian was a stroke of genius too.
Thank you! I considered making a video on Age of Empires 4 after its trailer was released, I didn't want to come off as overly negative so I decided against it. What did you think of the trailer?
@@happycompy I enjoyed seeing some features like the difference in playstyles among different factions, being able to ambush and hearing that sweet WOLOLO! However the graphics are a bit cartoonish and the unit scaling compared to buildings is a bit off. However I will judge the game when I play it and I hope there will be good modding!
I started playing Rome II when I had a GTX 670. Now I have a 7900XT. It's funny how my PC has changed, but my mix of go to games haven't. Some of my favourite nations to play are the Lusitani, Odrysian Kingdom, Colchis and Seleucid.
@@happycompyColchis by default is pretty trash. With a set of unit mods I have used for as long as I can remember the entire roster list for the grand campaign has been tweaked for major and minor factions. Colchis ends up pretty good and balanced while not being too samey. Same with Odrysian Kingdom and many others. I also love my Auxilia for all mod which adds another bulding to the military tab and has regional selctions of course. Makeing any nation diverse and playable.
I'm more than guilty of making Rome 2 a top played game on steam. I love the game, and for sure, the classic period, also earlier, like the DLCs "Wrath of Sparta" and "Rise of Rome". The AI is very predictable, yes, but the troop models are super cool, and the idea behind on the campaign, playing a focused region like Italy or Greece makes me more sense. I like to see dozens of known settlements all over the greek world rather than being compacted into 1 single region of the province in the grand campaign, and ignoring tens of battles that would be needed to really conquer any place in the world. And I also like the huge impact on season effects behind sparta's DLC. Of course you will get no wealth from farms on winter xDD
Rome 2 all i wanted was for it be a 2.0 Rome 1. Have everything in rome 1 but build on it and sprinkle some crack on it and i happily threw them my money. Instead I paid 60$ plus some more for some dlcs just to get a lesser version of rome 1. Also something as simple as having the ability to encampment a army then later on it have it become a village or city should've been added in
Medieval 3 would be so good. The historic enthusiasts are waiting Warhammer 3 to drop to see what next. I'll enjoy warhammer but nothing can't beat history
@@aleaiactaest6503 hmm. I'd buy it, but it smells a bit too much like a Napoleon to me, which would mean it would lack in the replayability department. Vaguely saga-ish. Lol.
The fact that I had a slight smile the entire time just proves what he was saying... these games, this one in perticular, feel like home. I couldn't have said it better myself.
There is so many mods it's very confusing for someone like me picking up the game after years. The most confusing part is how the keywords on the Workshop don't work properly, and lead to pages and pages of extremely specific, often unrelated submods. Imo, it's lacking user friendly small packs of comforts mods. Not heavy on modifications, no 2000 new units ( which DEI actually offers I think? ) and a long list of potential conflicts, no strict rules of installation, and available through sub click directly, as other mods are too big for that, and require old school installation. It's not a critic towards modders, I appreciate that you have apparently gave your opinion on the base game ( and its DLC ) for most of the video, and don't assume that everyone will run a heavely modded Rome 2, which is an experience that honestly, most new comers can't bother with for obvious reasons. It's almost two different games. I had that problem with Empire : I never recommended it to new players, because my experience with the base game was shitty, until I've spent hours and hours looking for mods, modding it, fixing interaction issues etc. That's not what I call a game one can recommend.
To be fair, Rome 2's moddability is lightyears ahead of Empire's in terms of user friendliness. The workshop is clunky , but it combined with the game's built in mod manager are huge improvements over pre-Shogun 2 titles on Steam. I take your overall point, though.
The passion with wich you made this video, you not only made a good video, but you left a bit of your soul in it, thats why I tend to come back here each few months
If we're talking combat, I think Rome 1 has the edge. But the complete lack of reliable diplomacy kills the imperial campaign for me. This hasn't (yet) been addressed in the remaster. So I'd agree, Rome 2 is just better.
I like rome 1 because I don't need a ton of system resources to play it. Just a straight to the point game with little fluff. Sometimes that's all you need.
Simplicity has its own charm, when ifirst played Rome 1 I hated the bright colors and historical inaccuracies. Now? I love those brightly colored Egyptians fighting Legionaries
Observations: 1:59 - Never been happy about the Carthage map in Rome II - I'm sure we wish that you could at least go to the Acropolis and have some parts of Carthage expanded. 3:27 - CA Sofia def gave Rome II the updates they needed - but the cutscenes were really lacking. To this day I am disappointed of the lack of cutscenes in Rome II for that matter. 3:54 - Let's not forget CA Sofia also introduced new artwork for the Desert Kingdoms, the Empire of the Third Century actually had a neat narrative for each faction - playing as the Sassanids you got your own unique campaign stories as such. They have to be commended on this. I would also point out that there is no TED/battle map editor for Rome II, but apparently LOTR team for Attila is working on a modding tool which will go for older total wars like Rome II - however first before anything that happens, LOTR mod has to be completed first. This video will blow up MASSIVELY - your channel's gonna grow.
I agree with all of your points my friend :). I wish they had put in more cutscenes as well. Still, The three latest patches compared to the previous three really shows the talent and dedication that CA Sofia put into Rome 2. Here's hoping that we get a rome 3 ;)
@@happycompy Thank you! I hope so too! I'll predict that there will be a Rome 3. Not now, but in a couple of years. CA knows full well that the Classical Setting is too tempting. It all depends on where they go because after Warhammer 3, the next announcement for the new fantasy franchise is going to be massive. I wouldn't be surprised if they said they're gonna do LOTR - the fantasy franchise will also take the franchise forward in a way as well - sorry if I'm going off in a tangent, but much relies on what new titles/sagas and fantasy titles will be announced for the next 5 years CA Sofia pulled a No Man Sky's approach on Rome II - and quite frankly they are one of the best developers with Feral combined. And CA the major studio has to be commended - they still listen to their fans no matter what.
@@MedjayofFaiyum I’m not sure if CA will be able to do LotR, because iirc the rights for that are still with the Tolkien estate. EA had the rights at one point (games like the hack’n slash for the movies, Battle for Middle Earth, and such), but not anymore. Not sure if the estate will lend the rights to CA, especially given that Christopher Tolkien had voiced great displeasure at PJ putting a greater emphasis on action in the movies (which the game would most likely be based on) and skipping over things like the songs and poems (the more literary aspects); not that he has a lot of room to talk, given that he endorsed the video game War of the Ring (which is arguably even less accurate than the movies). Basically, a game about grand strategy and conquering your enemies while managing public order and your economy doesn’t seem like it would be up the Tolkien estate’s alley.
@@jordinagel1184 CA did say they're in touch with several IPs and they're quite well known now, so I wouldn't put it too far out of the realm of possibility that they could be discussing with the estate. But EA has been..yeah. I mean look at the Rise of Mordor team they haven't got much from the estate, and tbh the Estate has made huge money out of the franchise even if they disagree with the way it's being marketed in games or books. I don't see a problem with CA for that matter making a total war game on it
Y know why i love this game ???. My father came back from his work shop while i play rome rome 2. And suddenly he's mumble. *dun dun dun dun dunnnnn dun dun dun dunnnn* he memorise tw rome 2 music. Cause i play this game everyday since the pandemic.
That was the exact reason why I wanted Rome 2 when I first saw it. I had Rome 1 when I was quite young and I enjoyed it (mostly just did custom battles though haha), and when I saw Rome 2 with its synced fighting animations I was awed. They really do bring a lot of life into the fighting.
Mate, I wouldn’t worry about Rome 2. I play a heavily modded version with DEI and quite frankly I couldn’t care less for Rome Remastered. I’m having too much fun playing Rome 2 with huge armies and fleets. Thanks to DEI, SaveParser and a plethora of DEI compatible mods, as well as my own mod tinkering.
Me and my college friend played this game. We played it for one year and put 800 hours into it. I'd come home from class and he'd already be in my dorm working on the campaign. We would go to parties to try and be social college dudes, but eventually we'd get bored and go play rome 2 together. So many hazy college nights subjugating lesser factions. Now I'm a boring workaholic with a wife and kid. I haven't seen that friend in 7 years. Idk where I was going with this but I'm really sad now.
Rome 2 was my first total war game. I picked up the Emperor edition after all the bugs had been fixed. I later abandoned it for Warhammer I & II, but it's still the best historical title IMO.
The setting is the only thing that is keeping it alive. Attila has features we wanted in 2, like building walls for settlements. And the sort, the army integrity system is a must. Better supply system.
I agree that Attila is superior to ROME 2 mechanically, but it suffers from a host of its own problems. It really should have just been an expansion to ROME 2 like Barbarian Invasion was to ROME 1, then we could have gotten the superior mechanics and the outstanding end to antiquity alongside updates to the core Rome 2 experience as well.
I absolutely love Troy and wished they did an expanded Bronze age total war game around the middle east with the different players that fight for the Tigris, Euphrates, and Isreal. Like you said there is something completely new about the maps and factions in antiquity that medieval and more modern era games lose. As an American with a rough understanding of European history I can point out the nations of England, France, and HRE but I would have no clue about Carthage, Pontus, or Sythia.
Just watching the soldiers marching and fighting.... its beautiful. Units like like Sacred Band, Heroes of Sparta, Praetorian Cohort,Nuragic Warriors or Thracian Nobles, they look and fight so different.
Damm now I have to reinstall Rome 2 again. But I agree to all of your points. When stuff like Familiy tries, desert tribes and especially rise of rome dropped, I was moved to tears. They made me interested in factions I did not know exist, despite being a history buff. And the sheer diversity of cultures, armies fighting styles and more makes it so diverse and fun to play. More than Atilla and especially more than civil war titles like shogun 2 and 3k.
I've gotten so sick of everyone still dragging Rome 2. I didn't experience the launch, and I know it was shit, but it's been eight years. It might not be everyone's favorite, but acting like it did nothing right is disrespectful to all the people who do love this game.
Rome 2 is like the Transformers movies. A financial success, but objectively of a poor quality. Especially compared to its predecessors. People like to point out the awful launch and then pretend as if the fundamental issues were fixed, which isn't true.
Rome 2 is by far my favourite TW game. Rome 2 and Shogun 2 are the only ones where I've really liked the feel of the combat (maybe because of synced animations, idk), units just feel slippery in the later games. And Rome 2 has a ton more unit and faction variety. It does still have its annoyances (like the inability to raze combined with tax inefficiency), but my Egypt campaign was my favourite of any TW game.
Thank you so much for this video. I never left Rome II. I stumbled onto Rome I late in life, around 2009. I'm 68 now, but I loved the game, still do, but don't play it anymore since Rome II arrived. It just felt like going back to "Junior-high" after reaching High School. A lot of complaints about this game. I never suffered from any of the bugs that others have, and at the time - I had a pretty "low-end rig" (i5 4670, GTX 660), although I did encounter occasional crashing. Sega let me know that I needed to verify the integrity of the game cache. Something I knew nothing about, since I'm not only a dinosaur, but usually a console gamer. After that, I never had any issues. I run the game on a newer (and better) rig now, and hope that I can live at least another ten years to keep playing this game! It's my favorite video game of all time! I've always felt that the game deserved a lot better than it received from the gaming community.
Great video my friend! I'm a veteran of Rome 1 and I'm really excited about the remastered. I have purchased Medieval 2, Rome 2, Attila, and Shogun 2 in steam but I haven't invested time in any of them except Medieval 2. I tried shogun 2 for a couple of hours but I didnt have the motivation to learn it. I really want to try Rome 2 and invest some time in order to learn it but I am stuck at the beauty of Rome 1. Time will tell, if remastered is not what I expect it to be, I'll definitely gonna try Rome 2.
You're wrong, but you also have a Tony Soprano profile pic so it evens out. "I'm workin' with CA on this." "I don't give a sh*t if you're working with Walmart knock it the f--- off!"
Random civil war doomstacks, no one willing to trade, everyone randomly declaring war on you, rorarii cheese, land sea battles, ai reorganising perpetually, hour lasting end turns Yet we endured it like champs I'm still waiting for my medieval 3
This was a great video, I feel the same way about Three Kingdoms. I've been playing Dynasty Warriors and Romance of the Three Kingdoms since I was a child. I was in disbelief when CA announced that they gave up on it.
The Antiquity was also a glorious period for Europe. Roman, Carthaginian, Macedonian armies and empires were massive and were only surpassed by 17-18th century counterparts.
My fave Total War is Shogun 2. Because having a XVc campaing together with a XIXc campaing is unbeatable. Attila being a different game ruins Rome 2 for me, to know what could have been ruins what It is.
Rome II actually did kill the franchise. It killed it from improving since the playerbase just stays so blindly loyal to a mediocre product. The glitches at the start. The unneccesary unit limit, the clunky fights, regressing ship and ship crew models. The list goes on and on.
I'm playing Rome 2 Emperor edition still today in 2023. It's fantastic, especially if you are an history nerd. I bought Attila the other day on sale but havent played it yet.
I think Total War: Persia would be great! India in the east and some unbending Greeks in the west. You can have Babylon and Egypt. You can either play the rise of the empire or travel around as rebels rise everywhere and kingdoms try to become independent. You could have homogenized armies or have it be put together by different troops, that you gather around your Empire. A bit like in Troy but cooler. It would be a world the average player knows very little about, but we all heard of it. EDIT: grammar
"There was a youtuber by the name Reynold Sanity" - how hard it is to hear when he is still on my subscriptions list for 5 years and I am waiting if he maybe comes back again some day...
I've only recently started playing Rome 2 after Rome remastered, three kingdoms and medieval 2 (I arrived to the party late) and I have to say it feels so much better in almost every aspect than the others. Graphically, setting wise, combat wise it's so clear of other titles. I'm a filthy casual but I have no idea how CA can make that and end up in the situation they are now. I feel for everyone who's grown up or played it for a long time not knowing that they'd still be playing it 9 years later as nothing released since, by the same company, could hold a torch to Rome 2
I love this game like you wouldnt believe, i was a paradox fan before going full deep into rome 2, now i think rome 2 is the best game in all of human history
Rome remastered just made me want to play Rome 2 again, i don't regret buying it because I want to support CA making more of my favorite game series, but to be honest I barely played it for a couple days before I realized how much I missed little things like units replenishing automatically without having to March all the way back to a city with an advanced enough barracks, and after I hit Marian reforms and remembered how painful it was to watch your veteran triarii and principes die off, unable to be upgraded to modern units, I ended up just installing Rome 2 again for the 10th time.
I can honestly say whilst I'm excited for Rome Remastered, i love Rome 2. It has become a great total war that is the last of the historic titles that I continue to play despite its age.
WH3 came out and with all the bugs on the first day. I reinstalled Rome 2 and enjoyed playing it to get my Total War fix. I love Rome 2 even though I own all the other TW games. Great video!!!
I didn't get WH3 yet. Probably going to wait until Mortal Empires eventually comes out. Maybe it'll be in a better place then. But yeah, Rome 2 and Warhammer 2 I play the most.
I have played Rome II for approximately the amount of hours as you. I bought it back in 2014, when I was in the US. And to be honest, I barely played it back then, so I kinda missed the huge disappointment that it was back then. I guess the studio that made it what it is today and the game that I still really, really enjoy is the one based in my home country - Bulgaria. Btw, it's pronounced SOfia, not SofiA, it's the capital :D (they also made Troy, which I am still to try, got it for free from EG) I guess I'll be commenting more on your videos from now on. I hope we can play together one of these days. Cheers!
Thank you for sharing your story! I need to look up how to pronounce it so I get it right next time :) Troy is definitely worth the price of free, I really enjoyed it.
Since Rome Remaster came out I have been playing a lot of ......DEI for R2 :D. I really love the more complex population system and the huge amount of unit variety and province specific units. Guess I just wasn't there for the original but the battles feel to fast right now at least without mods. for both me and the enemy I feel like my battles are over with a minute of the lines clashing and the rest is just watching groups of units rout for seemingly no reason. Although I was really enjoying having my dynamic general grow as I played along it was fun watching his speeches get more and more epic.
3 games have a special place in my heart. AoE2, Skyrim, Medieval 2. But rome 2 is becoming one of them. I bought that game in 2019/20, so I have never seen it in its release state. Which makes it easier to love this game I guess
I got into this game because of ancient history and is so interesting, I never thought I would enjoy RTS but I do and rome 2 is by far my favorite and I don't care if people trash it =)
Looks like the reign of Rome II continues given the dismal launch of Rome Remastered. Having played since 2018, I think it's a pretty good game, it's a bit complex to manage at the start, but once you get going, you can steamroll through the map at Normal.
I love the way you narrate this video "the last hurrah of the ancients". My man this is some very good writing and voice over. The scenes you chose complement that very well and you made me want to play Rome 2 already (I quit Total War at Rome 2s launch and came back just now because of the Rome 1 remaster). I also very much like the personal spin you take near the end. If you keep making videos of this quality your channel is gonna become very very big in the near future! Anyway. Well done, you got one more subscriber here, keep it up and good day! :)
@@happycompy Honestly not that well. Mostly I have had loading times that make it unplayable really. Which is super sad because I really like the improved graphics for the most part. However I've been playing Shogun 2 alot lately and that has been a blast!
Rome Remastered will not lay rome 2 to its rest.... it will show how glorified the view of most people at rome 1 is while proving how advanced Rome 2 is at the same time... i recently played Rome 1 at IOS.... man its just so simplified I think most people will play one or two campaigns and than return to rome 2
Think It comes down to what you prefer, If you like more cinematic battles and historical accuracy you play Rome 2. But for a sandbox strategy game you play Rome 1 imo, simply because the battle engine is better and all armies can be independent without a general allowing more tactical freedom.
Nah sorry, it anoyes me to much that every body is running around with full stacks in rome 2. It's just a grind to fight against 100 one-city factions with full stacks.
I started playing total war games in 2010, my first was rome 1. years later i heard about rome 2 coming out and i was so hyped, i even got my first real pc just because i wanted something that could run this game. ive played lots of total wars: rome 1 & 2, attila, medieval 2, shogun 2, empire, napoleon, warhammer 1 and troy, but rome 2 is the only one i actively recomend people. I still love Rome 1 because its what got me started and I think is the best total war, but I also keep Rome 2 at the same level, I love the battles, how the game feels, the setting, the variety, the emotions i get playing this, i feel its like rome 1 but more modern. of course it lacks in some aspects, yes, but overall both rome tw games have been my favorite of all total war. None of the games after it have caputred me so much, and the newest games (at least for me personally) lack in the battle aspect. If you like them thats fine, just not my cup of tea, i want battles as in rome 2, just improved and bigger if possible. Great video
Fair enough. You weren't the first person I've heard have that exact same complaint. I do think that the game lacks character in its UI, sound and visual design, and maybe that's what fails to capture some people in the first few hours of gameplay.
@@happycompy Yeah that could be it, I've only played the main campaign so maybe I'll give the others a shot and see if they hook my attention more quickly. It's weird because I love the roman period and a lot of the factions involved and I quite enjoy attila from time to time which is fairly similar (imo)
Rome 2 is not bad game, but its not great game either.. It contains many fundamental flaws which make this game less gameplay friendly than older titles... CA made a lot of mistakes with it.. the whole campaign layer change was for the worst, and adopting "action system" instead of previous "incidental" one was a huge mistake.. to explain - in old TW games, zone of control for armies represented an area, which if breached by enemy, battle ensued automatically.. in Rome 2, zone of control is area around army which enemy army just cannot enter.. and interception is only happening when army is in ambush stance... This leads in situations where armies just pass through each other zone of control and attack city behind the supposedly defending army with no response which greatly limits the strategy aspect of the game.. Similarly, in older games (ETW,NTW) when fleet was positioned in a "land-bridge" it effectively blocked that land-bridge to land armies.. and player had to fight that fleet first, to manage to move army through.. in Rome 2, you can have 10 fleets in straights of Sicily and they will not block enemy army from moving into Italy.... CA should really reevaluate what they want to do.. if its strategy games, then they should add strategy layer back instead of stripping it down...
What game is special to you? The game you always find yourself coming back to?

If I would be honest, Kingdom Come Deliverance. Great game. If I would just say for total war games, empire.

Three kingdoms and Troy went to far in the "hero units" aspect it doesn't even feel like a total war game and Atilla isn't everyone's cup of tea not to mention it runs a lot worse then Rome 2 unfortunately or I would be playing 1212 mod on it.
your other options are all older then 7 years
@karo tref of course. Best theme for a total war besides middle ages
I like Rome 2 in the fact that the scale feels larger with the garrisons and able to play with double size armies. It feels more alive with the factions like the world is more populated
Completely agree, especially after playing Rome: Remastered.

The roman period is just the coolest

Exactly. The variety of factions, the history. Its just incredible. I've always been totally fascinated by the Romans and ancient history.
Medieval times is also cool because of the armours and cruzades

Yeah some of the voice acting is epic. Some of it, like the barbarians on campaign map however ....spare my arse.
@@happycompy Yeah the barbarian voices are terrible in rome 2. Voice acting in rome 1 was much better in my opinion, especially the dude that voiced the roman speeches.

The Divide et Impera mod made me fall in love with this game
Mods are 100% what keep me coming back again and again. DEI is fantastic.
Divide et impera is essential for rome 2. And medieval kingdoms 1212ad for atilla.
Thoughts on graphics and playability AE vrs DEI?
Both ancient empires and dei are both very good. They have totally different styles tho try both and see witch u prefer
Dude....you are totally correct....
You know the Middle Ages had the best government type?
Shogun II for me. Strategic, tactical, multi-layered, seiges are great, naval combat is different and at least good - and surprisingly quite optional, the entire map uniting against you just as you are about to turn into that "late game steam roller" is well done, and it has ninjas!!
This was one of the few TW that didn’t even need a MOD to feel great. The MODs just made it GOAT tier. Shogun 2, Med2, and Rome 1/2 are my favourites
No realm divide mod saved shogun 2 for me
Shogun 2 really is great but the sieges and unit variety was lacking, thankfully mods saved it for me
So proud of Bulgaria and the people in CA Sofia that they actually managed to do something cool. I saw that Total War Saga Troy has been developed by CA Sofia and I think it's a solid game as well

Same. It's just got that magic to it somehow.
Be glad you missed out in 2013 lol
I grew up with rome1, Rome2 had to wait until I was able to open up to, but once I got it, years after launch, patched, fixed… damn, it’s a work of art. I can say playing as any faction gets you so attached to it to a level not even rome1 did. Yeah, it’s way more accessible and one lost army can be replenished pretty fast, money is pouring way easier etc. But There’s a feeling of passion coming from this game. A love that allowed the devs fixing it to make it arguably one of the most successful late success stories. I tip my hat to them.
Amen filip.
Well Rome II has :
-Big uniques cities wich level visual changes according to its tiers
-Big armies on the field so you feel like you have 2 actual armies encountering each other
-Awesome matched sync animations between models wich is immersive af and is no more in modern TW
-Each units have their officer and banner
-Army can evolve through won battles thanks to the xp system
-Lots of diplomacy options
-Lots of differents factions with differents playstyle
-Stamina and moving carefully your units matters because you don't have nukes, magic, machineguns and everyone being a marathonian like in newer games
I'm playing Rome 2 every now and then. I came back to it everytime I got bored. There is something special about the era that fascinates me. Made me feel like a roman emperor, a senator a rebellious roman general or even a devious pharaoh. It's what I feel everytime I play Rome 2.
Role playing is awesome in Rome 2
As of now, 1878 hours I've sunk into this game on Steam.
It has kept me coming back since it's release and still does. Endless replayability with the diversity of factions and units, often quite difficult strategy and economic management keeps it challenging and the setting is the most interesting of any Total War game.
The mods then elevate the game to legendary status.
Even in a video singing Rome 2's praises, we're using Rome 1's OST for background music.
That's because it's the GOAT.
And after Rome I Remastered, Rome II it’s still going.. again, another wrong prediction.
It's nice to be wrong
I think Warhammer was the death of the francize to be fair. all that magical jazz really ruined it all

A true chad can enjoy both.
I started playing Rome II when I had a GTX 670. Now I have a 7900XT. It's funny how my PC has changed, but my mix of go to games haven't.
Some of my favourite nations to play are the Lusitani, Odrysian Kingdom, Colchis and Seleucid.
Interesting choices of factions! Cool to see Colchis on your list :)
I'm so glad this game wasn't shut down
Rome 2 all i wanted was for it be a 2.0 Rome 1. Have everything in rome 1 but build on it and sprinkle some crack on it and i happily threw them my money. Instead I paid 60$ plus some more for some dlcs just to get a lesser version of rome 1. Also something as simple as having the ability to encampment a army then later on it have it become a village or city should've been added in
We need to start a massive campaign asking for MTW III and Rome III if possible!

The fact that I had a slight smile the entire time just proves what he was saying... these games, this one in perticular, feel like home. I couldn't have said it better myself.
I'm glad you agree!
Rome II has very good optimisation for me. Playing a game smoothly + playing an excellent game = unlimited replaybility!!!
Agreed the game runs really well 👍.
The passion with wich you made this video, you not only made a good video, but you left a bit of your soul in it, thats why I tend to come back here each few months

Peoples nostalgia for Rome 1 blinds them to Rome 2 being fundamentally a better game.
Wrong.
Now? I love those brightly colored Egyptians fighting Legionaries
they should've worked on the ai for the remaster
Rome 2 + Atilla got some best variety of factions and campaign maps.
Agreed.
Yes I would love it if they brought back the thing where anything u built showed up on map and city view of Rome 1 to the maps of the rome 2 era
Observations:
1:59 - Never been happy about the Carthage map in Rome II - I'm sure we wish that you could at least go to the Acropolis and have some parts of Carthage expanded.
I wouldn't be surprised if they said they're gonna do LOTR - the fantasy franchise will also take the franchise forward in a way as well - sorry if I'm going off in a tangent, but much relies on what new titles/sagas and fantasy titles will be announced for the next 5 years
CA Sofia pulled a No Man Sky's approach on Rome II - and quite frankly they are one of the best developers with Feral combined.

As an American with a rough understanding of European history I can point out the nations of England, France, and HRE but I would have no clue about Carthage, Pontus, or Sythia.

I really enjoy the antiquity setting of Rome, but I also really enjoy the Warhammer setting they’ve been doing.
The Antiquity was also a glorious period for Europe. Roman, Carthaginian, Macedonian armies and empires were massive and were only surpassed by 17-18th century counterparts.
"Glorious" is a great word to describe Antiquity, agreed.
It’s still not dead

I think Total War: Persia would be great! India in the east and some unbending Greeks in the west. You can have Babylon and Egypt. You can either play the rise of the empire or travel around as rebels rise everywhere and kingdoms try to become independent. You could have homogenized armies or have it be put together by different troops, that you gather around your Empire. A bit like in Troy but cooler.
It would be a world the average player knows very little about, but we all heard of it.
EDIT: grammar
maybe an expansion for rome 2 or medieval but on its own it could be a bad launch
@@bugrilyus Everything could be a bad launch, that's why I only buy games that are fully patched. Never buy at launch!
"There was a youtuber by the name Reynold Sanity" - how hard it is to hear when he is still on my subscriptions list for 5 years and I am waiting if he maybe comes back again some day...
Miss that guy.
Attila is by far the better game, but the campaign setting is frustrating if you like playing as rome.
Agreed that Attila is a better game mechanically, but it chugs like a mother and the turn times kill the Grand Campaign pacing for me.
The 1212ad mod fixes it.
I share you feelings exactly.
But yeah, Rome 2 and Warhammer 2 I play the most.
dude. This video was so well made you easily got my sub. Quality content, keep it up!! You got me so nostalgic i went and started a new campaign.
Thank you so much man!
Btw, it's pronounced SOfia, not SofiA, it's the capital :D (they also made Troy, which I am still to try, got it for free from EG)
I guess I'll be commenting more on your videos from now on.
The campaign holds up in Rome Remastered, but the battles are clunky imo.
3 games have a special place in my heart. AoE2, Skyrim, Medieval 2. But rome 2 is becoming one of them. I bought that game in 2019/20, so I have never seen it in its release state. Which makes it easier to love this game I guess
Great choices, Attila!
I like epic walls and I like Roma Surrectum's building chains...
Thank you so much for this comment! I'm glad to hear you've come back to the series in honor of the remaster. How've you been enjoying it so far.?
@@happycompy Honestly not that well. Mostly I have had loading times that make it unplayable really. Which is super sad because I really like the improved graphics for the most part. However I've been playing Shogun 2 alot lately and that has been a blast!
Rome Remastered will not lay rome 2 to its rest.... it will show how glorified the view of most people at rome 1 is while proving how advanced Rome 2 is at the same time... i recently played Rome 1 at IOS.... man its just so simplified
I think most people will play one or two campaigns and than return to rome 2
Think It comes down to what you prefer, If you like more cinematic battles and historical accuracy you play Rome 2. But for a sandbox strategy game you play Rome 1 imo, simply because the battle engine is better and all armies can be independent without a general allowing more tactical freedom.
We will see :) I tend to agree with you.
Great video
Thanks for sharing man, I'm the same as you: ROME 2 holds a special place in my heart.
I don't know what it is about Rome 2 but every time I play I just get incredibly bored like 5/6 turns in and uninstall it again...
Same
Rome 2 is not bad game, but its not great game either..
