Finish on the door looks great ! Its good to see a painter who is not a hack ! Keep the vids coming . As a professional painter of 23 years I like your spray technique A+ !
Loving your videos, I'm a pro painter in NZ 12years, great to see you sharing your techniques, I've picked up a few tips I will try... keep it up! Personally I would always remove the front door and hardware and spray flat but that's just how I was taught. Cheers!
Thanks man. I appreciate that. There are so many brilliant painters/tradesman out there so I know I'm no competition but I'm just doing my thing best I can.
ThePainter Thank you. I'm uploading a video on how to set up an airless at the moment, and one on how to clean one. For the new people interested in spraying. I'm trying to create some worthy content, and hoping I can reach people who appreciate the footage. Thanks for checking in.
I have thought about that even though there's a lot of those out there, one more can't hurt. ☺ I have footage of me setting one up so far, need to make it into a video.
John Charlesworth Hi there, revisiting the comments here and figured I'd let you know I made two vids on safely setting up and cleaning the airless sprayer. ☺
Just came across your channel and am so happy I did as you're as pro as they come. I love how informative you are and dont hold back any information. A few questions I did have was when doing garage doors do you give you a light sand as well before applying the paint? And also.. Do you ever pressure wash it before hand (garage doors or front doors?)
Thanks for the kind words. I will always want to wash garage doors as part of the prep process. I would typically give metal or fiberglass surfaces a scuff sand before the next steps. Wood surfaces might get more than a scuff sand
Flyer88 Thanks man. I used to paint metal doors with Speed-E-coat all the time with a turbine hvlp. It takes patience since you have to put it on so thin, but once it's dialed in...
Weather stripping is taken out, door is spaced 3/8 to 1/2" away from jamb so the spray gets in there. I painted the heel (hinge edge) of the door red with a brush on this one.
Thanks for the recommendation. I'll use the 3/16"x3ft one but I dislike the 1/8" ones and the 5 footers. I don't mind going without because I have full control of the hose with a turn of the wrist.
Nice job man. 20+ years of painting here and what I’ve noticed in lots of videos is everyone seems so concerned about psi. I hardly ever turn mine down. I feel I get more fingers with it down. So what is the point of turning it down?
Sorry for the late reply, but I had a Graco FFLP tip this time. They suggest 1000 psi but I go higher like 1350- to 1400 at times. I also use other tips frequently and shoot normal pressure like 1850 - 1950 psi.
My door has a lot of paint I used thinner nd a sander to get it to the metal. The paint I bought says it has primer. Should trust it or should I put on primer on the bare metal door?
JFranco Shouldn't trust your paint with primer in it unless it's specifically is made to go over metal surfaces like a DTM or some oil based paints. You should Prime the door with a bonding primer/adhesion primer. Like XIM bonding primer, or Kel coat, possibly Smart Prime, or a product that your paint store recommends.
Yes, that's what I've been using on that interior millpack and other things the last few weeks. I use the 310 and 410. Next time I spray something like Zar clear coat I'll go with a 308 tip
Do you thin the BM Soft Gloss paint before spraying? I'm using the same paint but in black and find that rolling it on is leaving streaks. Going to try spraying it next.
No I wouldn't thin it. The roller strreaks may be fixable with a little different roller cover and technique. If you're using a mini roller, it can leave uneven pattern easily.
I have used AAA working with one company a while ago, and hvlp through the years but just as necessary. I've done some toning, some speed dry enamels and polys with hvlp. I do mostly airless though.
georgeEPC sorry i couldn't respond until now. So the tip keeps getting clogged? Was is operating okay before this?? Of course the gun has a filter that needs to be checked that is cleared up and that's the right mesh. Those filters can get big holes in them or get blown out as we call it. Check the inline filter on the pump itself to see if it is ok or if it has big holes in it. Also it's a good idea to use strainer bags to strain the paint manually too. Let me know some of the details or if there is a more specific issue
Yeah partial problem was solved had not filter in the Graco contractor II gun. Must have forgotten that. I had bought new hose and also cleaned out the gun, forgot to install the new filter. Anyways, installed a 50 mesh in and it spays but still spits, and I get clogging quick to. All my filters are brand new. I also used the strainer bag like you had and worked out ok, still got some clogging, without filter I couldn't even reverse the tip yesterday to unclog the tip, today I could with the gun filter installed. Also Its a Ben Moore trim satin paint I'm spraying, also thinned with Flotrel. Now I'm wondering if the gun needs a rebuild
georgeEPC 50 mesh is the really course one. 100 mesh is the standard, good for most stuff, but you might want to use fine filters for trim paint and a 310
@@XCPainter probably not easy to be filmed and do commentary live. I guess I can be accused of fact checking, lol. I'm 35 years in the trade myself. Keep up the great work...
The two quick coats takes a qt or less for this small project, though using an airless sprayer requires more like 3 quarts to a gallon so it can siphon up the paint and fill the line (hose).
James Quant I have some pictures of the set up here: instagram.com/p/BXjWwhVlsQ_/ they show the strainer bag placed over the intake fan. This keeps many particles from getting into the motor and fan 3rd pic shows the strainer bag set up for the paint and sprayer.
Jay Babcock There was no ring, or holiday around it. There was enough space for me to spray it. I sprayed 2 coats and it looks great. Thanks for your feedback anyways.
Thanks, I do that most of the time, but not always... 🙂 funny enough the clients were looking for a different red so we repainted this after this was done, and I did take the knobs off because I had the time.

You make it look simple, good job , understated !!!
Excellent job! Using the best painting on earth can't hurt
Silky smooth finish and technique. Nice work. Thanks for sharing
Thanks man!!
I wish I could do apprentice with this guy. Best I have found on youtube for sure. Keep vids coming!!

You've done such a beautiful job!
Thank you very much!
You have done an awesome job my friend, that door came up amazing. Just dropping by to see how your going 👍

Awesome.
Very Nicely Done My Friend

Nice job! Have you considered making a video about how to set up and properly clean an airless sprayer?
I have thought about that even though there's a lot of those out there, one more can't hurt. ☺ I have footage of me setting one up so far, need to make it into a video.
XC Painter that'd be excellent. I love the quality and thoroughness of your videos. You do real quality work.

Heard your question on Idaho painters live steam- good luck with the channel!
Thanks for checking out my channel/videos!
XC Painter yeah, keep up the great content, can't wait for your channel to blow up.
I usually take the door off and spray it in the backyard. Use the sun to dry fast.

nice Job bro.
Bro are you nervous? Lol. Another fine job great work!

Someone that can spray properly!
What about doing speed enamel with a Turbine?
Flyer88 Thanks man. I used to paint metal doors with Speed-E-coat all the time with a turbine hvlp. It takes patience since you have to put it on so thin, but once it's dialed in...

Hey what about the part of the door that sits behind the door jam?
Weather stripping is taken out, door is spaced 3/8 to 1/2" away from jamb so the spray gets in there. I painted the heel (hinge edge) of the door red with a brush on this one.
Yeah but doesn’t it miss the edge of the door, surly the doors got to be slightly open , great video door looks mint
The weatherstripping is removed and the door is cracked open so the whole face is getting hit. The heal of this door got brushed Red too.
@@XCPainter nice job
What kind of primer paint can I use for plastic trim on metal exterior doors?
My favorite waterborne bonding primer is XIM bonding primer. There are other comparable products but this one has some nice characteristics
Need a whip hose it gives you more flexibility when spraying ask the paint store they have them
Thanks for the recommendation. I'll use the 3/16"x3ft one but I dislike the 1/8" ones and the 5 footers.
I don't mind going without because I have full control of the hose with a turn of the wrist.
Great job.Only question I have why are you so jumpy???
Lol don't know but I'm on the clock and I've never been keen to be in front of cameras, but keeping busy (getting the job done) is easy on camera.

How much does it cost or do you charge to paint a door?

Keep up with the videos. Do spray with hvlp or AAA ?
I have used AAA working with one company a while ago, and hvlp through the years but just as necessary. I've done some toning, some speed dry enamels and polys with hvlp. I do mostly airless though.
Do you close the door when you're painting it or keep it slightly ajar? Thank you!
Karyn McDonald slightly open, 1/2" to 3/4" is all.
Thank you!

Hey XC...I need some advice. I have a a Graco I think its a 395 Used a 310FFLP and man all I get is clogging up.

My Graco has two filters, one in machine the other in gun. Change both?
georgeEPC the gun filter will be the most important.
dry time to recoat and curing are two different things, curing takes several days.
Yes, correct
@@XCPainter probably not easy to be filmed and do commentary live. I guess I can be accused of fact checking, lol. I'm 35 years in the trade myself. Keep up the great work...
How much paint did you use? Got a front door to spray in bm but only got a quart
The two quick coats takes a qt or less for this small project, though using an airless sprayer requires more like 3 quarts to a gallon so it can siphon up the paint and fill the line (hose).
Now this boy moves. Take notes y’all.
25+ seconds to spray a door blows the mind of non-sprayers..lol
Thanks I appreciate the compliment! Yeah airless spraying works well once you get confident with the process.
Come do my door!!!
last night on the Idaho painter u said to run a strainer bag on the pump. can u show this on a video. not sure what u mean
James Quant I have some pictures of the set up here: instagram.com/p/BXjWwhVlsQ_/
they show the strainer bag placed over the intake fan. This keeps many particles from getting into the motor and fan

I don’t understand. What about the half-inch completely around the door where the doorstop is, it’s not gonna get painted because the door is closed
With the weather stripping removed there is ample room (1/2" or more) where you can spray right in there.
unless that door opens out you have a ring. It needs to be removed from the jam.
Jay Babcock There was no ring, or holiday around it. There was enough space for me to spray it. I sprayed 2 coats and it looks great. Thanks for your feedback anyways.
Allways take hardware off good vid though
