Airless Spray Paint Metal Building? Step-by-Step how to Paint Metal Building like a Pro (SATISFYING)

  • Can a DIYer Airless Spray Paint Metal Building? The addition on the house has been done for a while now and is much closer to the metal barn (which houses the DIYTyler shop) then it was before so you noticed the color difference between the vinyl house and the metal commercial style barn color.
🌿Thanks to Greenworks Outdoor Power tools for powering us through this video! Check them out for all your outdoor power tool needs.

We recently rebuilt the shed at the back of the property, which is now the same color as the house.....so....the barn was looking REALLY bad! It is a 30x40 barn with metal siding and trim. The trim was a different color than the trim on the house, and the siding didn't match either. To make matters worse there was a lean-to added to the back of the barn that is YET a different color of brown! This had to change!
You can rent Airless spray equipment, where we live a medium duty sprayer is less than $100 for a full day rental.
    📔📙All our Digital Plans: bit.ly/2Mm6slA
We decided to paint the metal trim and siding to match the other buildings on the property. Here are the steps we took to transform this barn for about $500!.
    1) We began by replacing the man door that was rotting on the bottom due to water damaged before we put a gutter on the barn. This was $200 all by itself!
    2) We then removed those gutters as they were the correct color and had no need to paint them. 3) Removed an rust on the metal siding using a wire wheel on an angle grinder, there was not much but a few spots mostly on the seams.
    4) Powerwashed the entire barn using Simple Green House and Siding cleaner and our Greenworks 2300psi Electric power washer. bit.ly/3jrpvaB
    5) We then used Rustoleum rusty metal primer to prime these areas to prevent rust from starting again. This primer cost about $15.
    6) Then painted the trim a dark brown using Sherwin williams Super Paint (all super paint cost me $300) which is an outdoor waterborne paint that is perfect for painting metal that already has paint on it. We sprayed the trim using a Graco TC Pro cordless airless paint sprayer.
    7) Masked off the Trim we just painted using Sharp Lines tape (3M) and masking paper.
    8) Painted the metal siding using tan Sherwin Williams super paint. Sprayed 6 gallons of this paint using a Graco ProX17 sprayer, took me about 4 hours to finish all the painting.
    9) Remove masking right after you have coverage otherwise the paint will dry on the tape and you could peel paint up.
    10) Clean up and sit back and admire the transformation!

As a painter I love spraying and I do like super paint but on a metal building you would want to use Sherwin Williams DTM or direct to metal paint. Just remember the higher the sheen the better the durability however, can be harder to spray.

I used that pressure washer recently and it is a nice option for homeowners. The only annoying thing is the delayed pressure build. Takes a few seconds after you pull the trigger to turn on and build pressure. Most good sprayers are instant on.

for a guy who IS NOT a painter despite having very nice Graco spray equipment ( and TWO gun extensions) ... I know you're not a painter cause you had to look up what spray width a 515 tip is .... you sure are damn good. and it looked like you had a below avg brush yet your cut line was perfect. Congrats ... excellent work. something tells me you're very good at many handyman jobs

Needed to turn up the pressure a touch. That will stop those lines on the edge. A good way to tell you are at the correct pressure is to go too low like you had it then turn up until those edge lines dissappear. Nice transformation though. Great job.

And by the way I like the fact that you primed out you're bad spots hats off for that but latex paint on metal I know oil-based paint is getting hard to get but there are still people that carry it although probably for the amount that you were going to need the latex was the Smart Buy and it definitely is a higher grade is latex from Sherwin-Williams they make pretty decent paint I have used tons of their stuff but I have also use their oil base to. Like the day I sprayed it! One of the best bang for buck projects we have ever done.

I'm already a painter, so this video was useful for critiquing, and finding errors 🤭 joking was good

just buy a gallon of iron oxide primer next time and spray it with your sprayer... professionals look goofy buying and using a can of spray paint LOL
i usually follow that up with 2 coats of high gloss industrial enamel.
