  • After spending a year buying and selling about a dozen kick drum pedals I’ve finally discovered the perfect kick drum pedal. In this video I briefly go through all the pedals that I bought and then soon sold, outlining the issues that I had with all of them and the perfect pedal that I recently discovered, and why it is so freaking amazing!

    Great video, very informative. Pedals are such a subjective item and I found it interesting how you feel about the dyna sync. I tried the double and found it very very fast, I currently have a pair of demon drives and they are very comfortable for me, fine for heel toe / scuffs and swivel technique- but they have developed lateral play in the heel plate. So I was thinking of looking at the double pearl demon xr’s and I might try at the same time another dyna sync to give it a proper chance. My main take is that I want a fast responsive pedal that helps my 50 year old body to keep playing metal - I had played a trick pro 1v and that was amazing - that is the level I am trying to get to without paying a grand

    Thank you for the pedal review. The store doesn't have all the pedals in stock, and ordering them only to return them later (disassembling and repacking) is not very appealing. Therefore, such reviews are excellent. One clarification regarding Dave Weckl. He plays the DFP9500C model, not the DFP8500C (he only uses beaters from the 8-series). At least, that’s the information on his website, and Weckl mentioned in his interview that he plays the 9500C. A question for you: your shoe size is 10.5 - which type of shoes is this size for? For instance, a size 10.5 in Adidas sneakers and a 10.5 in dress shoes are completely different (with a difference of about 2.5 sizes). If your shoe size were 7 (dress shoes), wouldn’t the board of the Yamaha 9500C be too short? Thank you.

      Hi, Bagi0. Ok, Dave Weckl plays the 9500C, but he takes the chain off and puts a strap on instead. Not sure if you know, but the 8500C has a longer footboard than the 9500C, even though the latter is more expensive as you can adjust the beater angle and pedal board height independently so what I did was I bought both and I swapped the bottom sections over so I ended up with an 8500C longer board on the 9500C mechanism. Then I sold those two pedals and bought the Tama Dana-Sync instead, which is smoother than any Yamaha pedal I've ever played and has a footboard that is about an inch longer than the 8500C. I'm size 11 UK shoe size and in the UK 11 is 11, be it trainers or dress shoe, and I have both ;) The Dana-Sync is the longest board in the world on any pedal, nothing out there is as long.

    Still using the Dyna sync? How close to a chain pedal feel do your settings make it? I am torn between this and the Pearl Eliminator Redline. I am very interested in the swappable cams because I have honed in on this as my playing issue. I have a Power Glide Iron Cobra and despise it and much rather the rolling glide (if I could go back). Is the the Dyna Sync more rounded or eccentric?

    • @tecraven
      @tecraven  6 місяців тому

      Yup, still using Dana Sync. My setting make it feel super smooth and slicker than the smoothest chain pedal I ever used, which was the Yamaha FP9500C and FP8500C, latter smoother due to slightly longer footboard over the 9500C. The Pearl Eliminator Redline are not as smooth as the Dyna Sync and they can be a little sticky and twitchy with regard to getting the spring set right and the amount of return bounces you can get, also pedal board too sticky for me, even with grips removed, making it harder to slide on. Dana Sync all day long.

    What is the sticker on your kick drum please? Does it allow you to use felt beater without harm? Thank you!

      It's an Evans EQPB1 rubber stick on patch. It's got a peel off back and you just stuck it on. Evans do two types and it is the black rubber one you want as the clear vinyl one is thin and for acoustic drum heads. This rubber one is a few millimetre thick and, yes, allows you to use felt beater. To be honest, I always use these Evans pads as they are rubber and they make the mesh head feel even more forgiving under foot and, thus, more like a real acoustic kick drum. They also come in a double pedal size, elongated, too, here is the link: amzn.to/47iefqq

      @@tecraven many thanks for the answer! Do you know if that would make sense also for kd10? As I think it's not a mesh

    • @tecraven
      @tecraven  6 місяців тому

      @@myyt4382 For KD10, yes, as it is a sort of mesh/rubber surface on that and the Evans pad will still protect it and give a 'slightly' different feel.

    ive just bought this pedal. using it on roland. can i ask did u change beater height? i have the kd120 bass drum also. the beater hits the centre abit lower than pedal using before but not sure if it makes any difference. thanks

    • @tecraven
      @tecraven  8 місяців тому

      I adjusted the height a little, yes, so the beater is hitting the dead centre of the KD-120, thus, hitting the sensor directly behind the mesh head (the sensor is in the dead centre). I did this to make sure I'm getting perfect triggering and Roland have designed all their kid pads in such a way that the ultimate beater height will be when it is hitting the dead centre. If you only have to move the beater height up or down by about 1cm you won't even notice the difference in 'feel'. But if you have to move the beater down like 3 inches (highly unlikely) then it will feel lighter and easier to play. If you have to make the beater 3 inches higher (again, very unlikely) then it will feel a bit heavier with more swing and will be a little slower, but you'll get more of a whack out of it. Go ahead and just the beater so it hits the dead centre, that way you'll get perfect triggering of the kick drum sound.

    For a beginner you recommend this direct drive or the chain version? I am planning to buy a Roland VAD507. Thanks

      If you'd asked me before I tried this particular DD pedal I would say chain, but this particular DD pedal is bloody amazing and much easier to play and control than a chain pedal. If you set it up using the same two settings I have here you'll find it incredibly easy to play and with my settings it feels just like the smoothest Yamaha chain pedals I've ever used, but without the lag of chain so much quicker and more responsive under foot.
