QR Codes for Photographers. Using the QR tool in Affinity Photo 2
I thought I’d throw this little video together to show not only how to create a QR tool using Affinity Photo’s superb new built in QR tool, but to also explain some of the benefits that a QR code can have for photographer’s and how you can use them to help sell more prints online or simply just to promote your business and drive more traffic to your online portfolio.

Roland TD-27KV2 must-have upgrades!

I also bought another PD-128 BC for a second floor tom. The track ‘Schism’, is one of my favourite songs by the hard rock band Tool. Their drummer, Danny Carey, is, in my opinion, the best drummer in the world - ahead of the likes of Neil Peart, Will Calhoun, Billy Cobham, Simon Phillips, and, yes, Buddy Rich - the latter who whom I think is something of a cliche as every drummer seems to say how great he was because everybody else says that. I recently bought these KRK KNS 8402 closed-back studio headphones, but after just five minutes of use I knew that they would be no good for any sort of mixing or mastering. Many thanks for this list of upgrades. This will be really helpful when my bank account recovers from that initial outlay! Any advice on pedal positioning for dual beater second pedal please? I find trying to fit it in with the snare and hi-hat stand comes out a choice between ease of use of the hi-hats, or ease of use of the 2nd pedal. Either causes a detrimental ergonomic impact on the other pedal.

    • @tecraven

      You're welcome. Regarding duel-beater double-pedal. When I had one, well, I've had a few, I always positioned the remote pedal between the hi-hat pedal and the snare drum stand, in other words you move your left foot further left to use the hi-hat pedal and then you move your left foot in (to the right) to put on the remote pedal for the double-kick. You might have to turn the snare stand (if you use one, if you rack-mount snare this won't be an issue) to get the feet positioned in such a way that it can fit.

    @ 2:05 🤣😂Thanks for the first laugh of the day. “Muffle the low frequencies”😂🤣 So they mean there is a lack of high mid / treble in the bass… The relevant response would be to adjust the volume balance between the sub and the main speakers. “I just had to laugh” JL I think there are two main points concerning placement. One being the phase alignment in the overlapping frequencies. Move it around, trial and error. Be careful to asses the result from your main listening position. The best placement being where it sounds the best (cleanest, phase wise). The other one being the positioning of the sub. If you place it under/inside a “table” you risk creating a second outer enclosure, with its own resonant frequencies / room modes. Subs are free ranging species. They don’t like to be boxed in😉 Proximity to a wall/ walls, will affect the volume level. Anyway, thanks for the well presented info. This one seems like the perfect companion to my Genelec M040’s. And at a nice price.

      I contacted Roland spares department to get a few extra bits and I cut some parts off a spare frame I had. Roland Drum Racks come up used on eBay all the time and they often go for as little as £95, which could be cheaper than buying a few new parts from Roland.

    Thank you for the pedal review. The store doesn't have all the pedals in stock, and ordering them only to return them later (disassembling and repacking) is not very appealing. Therefore, such reviews are excellent. One clarification regarding Dave Weckl. He plays the DFP9500C model, not the DFP8500C (he only uses beaters from the 8-series). At least, that’s the information on his website, and Weckl mentioned in his interview that he plays the 9500C. A question for you: your shoe size is 10.5 - which type of shoes is this size for? For instance, a size 10.5 in Adidas sneakers and a 10.5 in dress shoes are completely different (with a difference of about 2.5 sizes). If your shoe size were 7 (dress shoes), wouldn’t the board of the Yamaha 9500C be too short? Thank you.

    • @tecraven
      @tecraven 18 днів тому

      Hi, Bagi0. Ok, Dave Weckl plays the 9500C, but he takes the chain off and puts a strap on instead. Not sure if you know, but the 8500C has a longer footboard than the 9500C, even though the latter is more expensive as you can adjust the beater angle and pedal board height independently so what I did was I bought both and I swapped the bottom sections over so I ended up with an 8500C longer board on the 9500C mechanism. Then I sold those two pedals and bought the Tama Dana-Sync instead, which is smoother than any Yamaha pedal I've ever played and has a footboard that is about an inch longer than the 8500C. I'm size 11 UK shoe size and in the UK 11 is 11, be it trainers or dress shoe, and I have both ;) The Dana-Sync is the longest board in the world on any pedal, nothing out there is as long.

    • @tecraven
      @tecraven 20 днів тому

      Ok, the typing stand, I kind of modified it. It is a regular 'Laptop' stand, but I took an hacksaw and cut the front section off as it was too deep. This is it this (notice two front parts that I cut off with hacksaw): amzn.to/4bT72yV The songmics stand I have here is this one, but, again, I took a small saw and cut the feet shorter and then stuck little rubber feet on four corners to stop it scratching my desk, but they don't do it anymore: amzn.to/4dOI3id But, here is one that they still make, though a little different: amzn.to/3wQsplw And here is something similar: amzn.to/3wMizRP If you go onto Amazon and type in 'Computer desk stand' you'll see lots of similar ones too. I cut my computer desk stand down as I found tilting my neck up, even a little, gave me neck ache. Remember, your eyes are supposed to be level with 1/3rd of the way down the screen from the top with your head an neck straight, as I am in this video. Hope this post helps you out.

    Great review! For someone on a budget, these are excellent tbh. I bought the Eris 4.5BT speakers initially, on their own. Even on their own they are half decent speakers with decent bass response, and for the price, fantastic. I just added the sub woofer last week, really excellent sound from the whole system now, punchy bass and elevates the entire setup as expected. Mainly use them for music listening this last week, but going to try them for some home music production any day now. I'm really impressed with their performance, for what are essentially cheap speakers/sub. If you're on a tight budget (like me) you could do much, much worse.

    I own a TD27 . 2022 I believe. I love my set and while I would rather own an acoustic set, I have a bad back and my living situation won’t allow it so it’s perfect. My only gripe though, are the hi hats. For me they are like playing mud when it comes to accents. Especially if you’re playing your snare with your left hand lets say and want to go over for a quick accent . I play a lot of Rush for example and the accents are sometimes impossible. The kit came with a single top hi hat that had a barrel type switch for the bottom. I got so frustrated that I bought an older version that uses two cymbals but the bottom has two plastic bands that hold it down and Im not sure exactly how it works right now but it’s only a little better. They were very expensive. I really detest either version. Also when I bought my set I purchased a DW Colorboard series double bass pedal. Really incredible and beautifully designed. However they have a different hoop clamp from the old standard in that they use three disks. Two on the bottom and one on top about the size of a nickel. They were impossible to clamp on to my KD10 bass drum plate. After going back and forth between Roland and DW , and them basically blaming each other, I decided for whatever reason to flip the plate over so that the ridge on the plate is further away and it works great! Just in case anyone else runs into that problem. Thanks for a very informative video

    • @tecraven
      @tecraven Місяць тому

      Agreed, nothing quite like an acoustic set, but, as you know there's a place for both in this world and they both get along just fine, just like electric guitars and acoustic guitars - certainly good to own and use both if you have the room. The older Roland hats are ok, but nothing special, even the one with a bottom hat too. For me the latest Roland Digital hats, the VH-14D, is the best thing available at the moment and the closest you'll get to an acoustic set of hats, but at around £650 it's not cheap and it boils my pi#@ that they are basically two plastic frisbees with a couple of sensors in them that can't have cost more than about £15 in parts and manufacturing costs - total rip off, but they are excellent and will get you closer to where you want to be. But, even they have trigger issues. I found I had to turn the 'palm mute' function off or they would sometimes just lock up and not work and you have to reboot the module to get them going again. I had Roland swap them out for a replacement set, but new ones did the same. Might be worth you giving the VH-14Ds a stab though as they are superb, and larger too so more to aim at. As for the pedal issue, yeah, some of the Mapex won't even attach, they keep slipping back off the Roland hoop. The Tama I have is the best, grips perfectly and a much better pedal than 'any' DW in my opinion, and a fraction of the price. See my other video on 'the perfect drum pedal'.

    • @tecraven
      @tecraven Місяць тому

      It sounds like a 'polyphony' thing. Polyphony is basically the simultaneous combination of two or more notes (in this instance) being played at the same time. For your info, 'Polyphony' come from the Greek word for 'many sounds'. Anyway, most vintage synth sounds, and many others are not multi polyphonic, they are monophonic, meaning they can only play one note at a time and as soon as you play another note it cuts off or stop the first not and, essentially, replaces it. If you choose a classical piano sound, such as a Steinway, Bösendorfer or Yamaha, for example, your problem should go away as pianos can play as many note at a time as you choose. If a particular model of electric piano, or keyboard, is described (in the instruction manual tech specs) that it has 120-note polyphony, it means you can play up to 120 notes at any one time (in your case held down with the sustain pedal also) before you run into issues i.e. when you play the 121st note, the first of the 120 will get chopped away. Hope this is making sense. So, basically, chose a piano sound such as a classical Yamaha or Steinway and see if that fixes it, if it does, the reason you are having issues is because you are trying to play a monophonic vintage synthesiser, which can only play one note at a time.

    Interesting that you also found the standard rack restrictive. I bought a 4th tom pad and just couldn't get comfortable so I bought a whole second MDS rack then spread it all out a bit more. I quite like the larger floor tom pads but not the price, so I'll stick with the PDX-100s. The smaller diameters force me to be more accurate. I bought another Roland cymbal too - a larger one with two zones and two cable inputs however I dont use the bell, so I'll likely add yet another cymbal pad - I quite like the FX or china pads from ATV. I have my kit on a hard floor and was constantly annoyed that both the HiHat stand and bass drum & pedal would wander away from me, so I have cut down one rack leg, complete with its foot and use that as a stopper for the HiHat stand. At the moment all I have come up with to stop the bass drum and pedal from moving is a strap between the two front legs. Its actually quite effective but looks pants. Work in progress.

      All I've personally changed since this is I have the Kali IN-8 Wave 2 (second gen) monitors and a KRK S10.4 sub to go with them. Audio interface has been changed to a Focusrite Clarett 8Pre USB as the quality is the same as the Antelope. Over the first two years I found the Antelope to be twitchy regarding reliability and their customer support to be lacking too. Antelope kit is superb quality, but reliability and customer support is not great so I would probably not go with their audio interfaces again.

    If I just want to upgrade the floor tom to that pad do I only input settings once or for all kits installed in the menus?

    • @tecraven
      @tecraven Місяць тому

      Not sure what you mean. If you ad a fourth tom there will typically be a sound allocated to it on all the kits in the TD-27 module, typically a fourth floor tom, but if it is not the one you want you change it, and, yes, you change it in every kit and then save the settings. Most people set up two of three custom kits, usually a modified version of an existing kit that is copied and then modified and saved as a custom kit and then they will use these custom kits as their preferred kits.

  • @anthonymarchetti2676
    @anthonymarchetti2676 Місяць тому

    Whats the procedure to ad a 4th tom? And what do you connect it too on the back of the module?

    • @tecraven
      @tecraven Місяць тому

      Any of the AUX inputs. Then in the settings just choose the model of pad for that input and choose a tom sound that is in the same family as the other three toms and make any tuning adjustments to that tom that you see fit.

    • @tecraven
      @tecraven Місяць тому

      No, but it's really simple. Arturia Keylab attaches to the computer via USB. Audio Interface also connects to the computer via USB and then two TS jack cables are used to go from Audio Interface to the two monitors - that's it..

But if you want to use it as a controller live with no computer the manual says 'an optional 9-12v DC 1.0A power supply' should be used. I highly recommend Karl Taylor's photography course. You can pay a minimum of 1 month subscription and dip in and out through the year as you funds allow. Instead of paying an annual subscription or higher. But I have to laugh at the irony as Karl Taylor states on one of his modules that he likes Rankin and uses his work as a source of inspiration at times.

    I know this is kind of an old vid, and not sure if you answer questions, but I was wondering... is there a simple way to simulate 2 sticks hitting the same drum at around the same time like a real drummer would do it? For example, I want to create a build up by using the kick and the low floor tom together with every 8th note. The problem is that I can't draw the midi in such a way that the floor tom is triggered at the same time with 2 sticks (i.e. two separate midi notes that are offset a little in both start time and velocity). The problem is that one note cancels the other note out, so it doesn't sound natural. I know I could just add the same tom to a Flexi slot, but then I'd need to add another track (using multi out). Do you know of a way to do this in midi without having to add a whole separate track with the same drum?

    • @tecraven
      @tecraven 2 місяці тому

      Yes, there are several ways to do this, too many to explain, but there is a simple way also. In the DAW for example, just play the parts in with a midi pad and it will detect close double-hits or if you are writing midi notes, simply add another track for more snare hits directly, slightly off, the original snare hit, or even put them within the same track.

    • @tecraven
      @tecraven 2 місяці тому

      Kali IN-8 is what I have. They have an 8-inch bass driver so no need to add a sub and they are reasonably priced and 3-way. Or the Yamaha HS-8, very similar. Or if you want a bit smaller, Yamaha HS-7 or HS-5 - super little monitors that won't break the bank.
