How to Shuffle Cards: Overhand Shuffle
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 чер 2011
- The overhand shuffle is one of the easiest and most common ways to shuffle a pack of cards. Its a great shuffle for magicians to use since lay people are already familiar with it, and because there are some great controls and false shuffles that can be done while shuffling the deck in this manner.

God I love old UA-cam videos. Straight to the point and was perfect
there are faster videos than thus
I like how he made the thumbnail for modern audiences lmao
oh my god, thank you. the “peeling” motion makes so much sense- i always used to just slam two stacks of cards together and hope that they slotted into the gaps in the other one- obviously, it hardly ever worked
Practiced for 5 minutes and I'm now a master , I've been putting off learning since 2015 🙃🙃😂😂
How does it take you 5 years to be able to shuffle
@@fatkid1215 probably cos I just didn't bother ? 💩 why you commenting on a year old post you can't even read right? 😂
@@bekimetal444 that was mean
Yes same !!!!
@@fatkid1215 she said putting off since 2015 not practicing since 2015
Old youtube videos always explain things the best
Nice basic tutorial - and you are my "go to source" for good reliable information. Thank you.
your tutorial just helped two intoxicated people learn how to shuffle!!!! and it only took about 20 seconds!!! thank you so much !!!!!!!!!!
Quick, clear instructions.
Equals great video, thanks!
Thank you so much 😭 I've been trying to find an easy way to shuffle cards for readings and you helped so so much ✨
i bought my tarot deck yesterday, im here because i want to be able to shuffle my cards properly
I feel like such an idiot. XD I've been doing magic for 10 years and I just figured out recently that I've been doing the overhand shuffle backwards this entire time...
Rip
If it worked...
Finally!!! I can shuffle cardsss in my life!! Thanks bro.. LIKED! I practice this about 3 mins
Thanks. I’ve been looking all over the place how to do this, cuz I just started a board game collection... I never realized till having my own collection how crazy protective owners get about not damaging their cards. I’ve even sleeved them like the crazy table top gamers I told myself I’d never be 😂. But for the unsleeved cards, I needed this vid for shuffling without damaging.
I appreciate you giving me my anger problems back.
I had to do it the opposite way but it helped heaps, thanks!
Thanks dude, great video
@gunperry
Yeah, I don't know when though. I'm going to be busy so it could be a few weeks before it's uploaded.
Excellent, thank you!
Thank you so much for this helpful video. I found it easy to assume the position for holding the cards and quickly felt more confident using this technique. Thank you!
Thank you so much this helped a lot
Great video. Thank you
Thanks for the help bro
TYSM for the longest time I only know ripple and bridge shuffle
@MagicZack24 will you post a pinky count tutorial
Thanks, I've mastered it after 5 minutes!
Oh hello there!
Made shuffling easy, thank you
How do I prevent my cards from spreading out and tilting?
Hold the cards tighter with your right
Really good thanks
Appreciate it bro, needed a good and simple style to shuffle well.
Useful tutorial
Nice tutorial
Thanks really 👍 good job
THANK YOU SO MUCH
Why has no one ever explained it to me like this?? I've been putting off learing how to shuffle for years now!!
Would it be opposite the way you hold it if you’re left-handed
how efficient is this shuffle ?
Loved content like this. Straight forward and doesnt spam "but first like amd subscribe yada yada"
Wanted to learn divining
Thanks!
I have that ring!! Hahah found it at the flea market for $2
Ty IT WORKS IT WORKS THE LIKE BUTTON WORKSS
Thanks man
About the right hand position, where is the pack in relation to the fingers? I currently have it between where my thumb bends and between the first and second phalanges of my middle and ring fingers, but this looks a lot deeper than the grip you have. Thoughts on proper right hand position (or if it even matters at all)?
Dang bro 12 years no response how does it feel?
I do a bit better starting with opposite hands. Trying to learn both directions while my hands are about equally clumsy. I guess its ok to go either way. It's like learning to juggle. Move slow slow slow and eventually you find your own rhythm.
I never new it was that simple
Love you thank you
Though this may seem stupid but many peole still dont know how to shuffle cards.
Btw, almost no one in my country would do an overhand shuffle if they were playing cards. Hindu shuffle is the most popular form. When I was younger I only knew the Hindu shuffle. Only when I was exposed to magic did I know other types of shuffles
Thanks
I subscribed because you didn't ask me to. LIKE IT SHOULD BE.
Спасибо, очень помогло
Very good tutorial, thank you!
Thanks for the video man now i can shuffle my Uno cards :::)))))
it drags of a tail of cards when i do this what do i do wrong
SAME!
New cards are sticky, I hear. Oil from your skin will slick it up over time.
@@DarrenPauli other way around.
yeah i have this problem too (i learnt the overhand shuffle like 10 mins ago), but i realized that you should peel the cards differently. I can't really explain it, but slow the video down and look at the way he peels cards off with his thumb. You shouldn't apply pressure on the back of the cards cuz that creates a tail, but u should place your thumb on the right edge, next to your right index finger, and peel the cards from there (i know im late, but I hope you understand what I mean and i hope this helped)
I do it the other way where the cards are vertical
Thumbs up if this guy is awnsome! (I mean DecksAndContests)
I used to shuffle my cards like this all the time, then I learned how to faro shuffle and never went back, kind of like drugs (I don't do drugs for the record. Magic is my anti-drug!), great tutorial as always!
you still doing magic?
@@TheRealDanielTV he’s moved to drugs
I mean this is probably the shuffle you dont actually want to do but theres a lot of cool scenarios you can use it in
Not only was i looking for this info, but i have that same ring. Lol.
@MagicZack24 ok thanks
I tried this with a new deck of cards and still got sequences where it obviously hadn't shuffled. Not convinced this is the best method tbh.
thank you so much, this actually really helped and I finally learned how to shuffle cards!
very basic shuffle but was having trouble with grabbing like 2/3 of the deck each time
Great video but can I see the shuffle in slow motion ?
Doing this for tarot reading:)
Sameeew
That’s why I’m here!

I've been doing this wrong for 10+ years lol. Thanks
How come that after all these 16 years of trying to shuffle cards this video of 1:55 minutes made me a master of shuffling cards in under 5 minutes
I do this and i dont use my thumb just try it
The optical shuffle is a very difficult application of the overhand shuffle.

I can't even fit my fingers all the way around the cards I'm using tarot cards by the way and I am absolutely terrible at shuffling :(
Got the book Royal Road to Card Magic because other sleight of hand content creators advised it, but damn that book is so cryptic I had no idea what to do with even the first section (overhand shuffle). Have to look up a video to understand what to do. This book sucks. Ugh.
I have an impression that shuffle would only change the order of the cards
My how life as shuffling was a lie :D I used to just throw the at my left hand and only using my dumb to catch and control :D
Slow is smooth, smooth is fast
Fuck dude this is hard
Yeah, this hard. back too floor
I love your voice. Can you make a video just talking
What part of America is he from, that accent sounds familiar. .
Finally, I can shuffle like luigi
god iv,e bin doing it wrong for over seven years.
the 303th viewer is handsome
It's not even a good shuffle because all you do is split the deck and move it in a fancy way. You basically put the middle of the deck in the front.
Why does everyone shuffling cards have massive hands how the fuck can I do this with small hands someone help oh dear god I'm so frustrated rn
This is impossible i’ve been at it for half an hour and not improving
damn 240p
My hands aren’t big enough :-( much sad
compare 240p and 720p
LOL
I cant keep it even lmao
This is actually NOT a very good way to shuffle from what I've read: "Persi Diaconis is a mathematician who has been studying card shuffling for over 25 years. Together with Dave Bayer, he worked out that to produce a mathematically random pack, you need to use a riffle shuffle 7 times...[whereas] the overhand shuffle, by comparison, requires 10,000 shuffles to achieve randomness."
It is still a very cool way to shuffle cards and at least I know how to do it now.
10,000 sounds like a hyperbole, but it does indeed take more side shuffles. Problem with riffle is that it causes cards to bend and fold. Riffle is fine for your standard playing cards, where you can easily replace a deck, not so fine for cards to board games or trading card games (TCG's). For the latter two it's best to do a combination of pile shuffle and side/over hand. Pile shuffle helps separate cards, then a side shuffle randomizes. Randomize in this context means you or others cannot determine the order of the deck. It's a good idea to pile shuffle and side shuffle at least 3 times (that is, 1 pile shuffle and 1 side shuffle counts as 1). In this case you separate clusters of cards, and then randomize them, without damaging them. Perfect for any deck of cards that needs to last a long time.

Makes no sense to me, a left hander
Głowno prawda bullshit
Lefthand hardly moves at all. Me being left handed
You just do it in reverse lol
