    If a good lock takes five minutes to decode, and you want to protect something for ten hours, all you have to do is put 120 locks on it. The only downside is that you'll have to dial in 120 combinations when you want to use the thing, and you'll have to close and scramble 120 locks when you're done.
    If you bring two buddies, though, it becomes a more manageable 40 locks each. But a thief can also bring two buddies, and then they can decode 120 locks in 3 hours and 20 minutes.

      You probably need a spreadsheet to remember all the combinations of the 120 locks (because using the same combinations several times would make it easier to crack every lock).
      Now they just need to hack your computer/phone and find the spreadsheet 😁

    Back in college for some reason there were a bunch of abandoned bike locks on a bike rack. I noticed them on several occasions until eventually the school put notes on them stating they would be cut off if not claimed. For some reason I took it upon myself to try to crack the combination locks, realizing now I used the same method the author did. After a few days of practice I was able to crack most of them and claim several free bike locks!

    There's a design solution to this, but it makes the lock a lot more cumbersome. You need a switch that runs down the outer groove of the internal rotating gears. This switch needs to lock into the loop of the lock so that you basically it locks the lock's loop in place when it's disengaged from the combination gears. You end up with a lock that lets you either try to open the lock by pulling the loop, or lets you rotate the numbers, but not both at the same time.

      That's always the deal when it comes to basically any lock - if you want a lock that is going to be easy for you to open in a few seconds, then an experienced lockpicker can probably crack it open in little to no time. If you're willing to deal with a more cumbersome and inconvenient lock that takes longer to open then it's probably going to be a lot harder for an experienced lockpicker to get it open too. You just have to pick the right type of lock for your purposes - for example if you're just locking your bike up at the shopping centre while you go shopping a simple combination lock that is easy to carry and doesn't have a key that can be lost is ideal in my opinion. It makes the act of taking your bike look extremely suspicious because they either have to break the lock or pick the combination while people can probably see them doing it rather than just being able to hop on and ride away without raising suspicion if it was unlocked. If you wanted to secure your bike in a more isolated area for a longer period of time then I'd go for one of those big heavy iron U shaped locks with the funny keys - the only way your average thief is going to get a good iron U lock off is with an angle grinder, because to pick them open requires special tools that most people don't have and wouldn't know how to use even if they did have them.

  • @j800r_aswell
    @j800r_aswell 3 роки тому +1914

    Most locks are designed to deter thieves, not stop them. If somebody really wants to get past a lock, they can and will. However, the longer they are delayed the more chance of them getting caught or simply giving up for an easier job.
    A nomination lock could still be useful when paired with contemporary locks or further combination locks. Remember, the more of a hassle it is for you, all the more hassle it will be for any perspective thieves.

    I used to skip school assemblies a decent amount because I was often late to school and didn’t want to be singled out for being late, so I’d bunk out in the locker rooms where everyone kept their books and bags, with almost everyone locking their lockers with combination padlocks.
    I decided to pass those empty half hours by attempting to crack their codes, figuring this method out by myself when I noticed some dials were stiffer to turn, and eventually found myself succeeding every single time within 90-120 seconds.
    I made it into a challenge to myself to see how many locks I could crack by the end of assembly. My personal best was 22 locks in that 30 minute assembly period. I remember waiting for everyone to come back to the locker rooms and slipping into the crowd afterwards so no one suspected me, and everyone walking in and wondering how their lockers were mysteriously open XD

    I wasn't able to feel the moving/less moving parts, so I went for a more brute force but about just as long way for the fake gated lock:
    I checked out where all the gates where for all the wheels. Did a little table of the combination this left me with (a 4 wheel lock, 3 wheels with 5 gates, 1 wheel with 1 gate, 125 possibilities) then I just tested them all.

    To be fair, I use a combination lock almost entirely in the gym locker rooms. If a prospective thief is trying to get into my locker, 10min fiddling with the lock at an awkward angle is going to be way too suspicious to be able to pull it off. That’s the point of these locks, not unbreakable security, but to make it difficult enough that getting away with it is unlikely. In 10min there’s not only a good chance other guests or staff will get suspicious but also there’s a good chance I’ll return to the locker in that time

    • @kagehasu
      @kagehasu Рік тому +15

      I've been fiddling around with combination locks for a week or so, I have a 3 and 4 combination lock that is typically used in gym lockers and I can open a 4 combination one in 40 seconds or so if I keep messing it up, and 10 seconds if I get lucky. Also when you lock something with it it's way easier to open compared to what he does in the video. You don't have to use your hand to tension the shackle, you just pull it towards yourself so it tensions itself. Again, I have zero experience with locks and after a week of playing around with it I can get it open in 15-20 seconds average. Just so you know it won't take 10 minutes.
      Combination locks are especially garbage, other than bicycle locks which are kinda ok because you have to use a lot of force to tension it, it is way more of a hassle than a regular combination lock.

    Firstly I need to congratulate on what is a truly excellent video. That took you a long time to film and edit! However... for anyone else reading this, this is all about content. These techniques are in no way representative for all combination padlocks. On top of that, the mastery of cracking a lock is not purely learning ABC. The more you do it, the more you get a feel for it, and by making this video and testing tonnes of locks to find the ones he wants to film, Mike will have in fact become quite sensitive to lock cracking mechanisms. If he then went away for a month or two and came back he wouldn't have the same luck without going back through the processes. It's a known thing in lock picking circles. You need to stay current in your "feel".
    The point about false gates are valid and ABUS, being perhaps the best lock manufacturer, they add different false systems to their locks. You can't just crack the 165 series and think you can then crack all combination locks or even all ABUS combination locks. It just doesn't work that way.
    So to summarise.... Mike has made an amazing video and I love the illustrations of the mechanisms. Amazing. But he's also chosen a few locks which work for the point hes making, therefore making it appear all combination locks can be cracked with these three methods. It's content creation and hes got 6 million views from this video and made $$$$ from it.
    Video creation and production 10/10
    Validity of content in the real world 3/10

    LPL usually doesn't even need 5 minutes for an `impossible` lock. That ABUS keeping you for 30 minutes and then another eight after restarting seems like a pretty decent lock to me, one that will cause the majority of occasional thieves to give up and walk away in fear of drawing attention.

    Combination locks are the easiest locks to open. I did an escape room puzzle with my wife, halfways through we got stuck with the clues. I found a small combination lock on a door, "picked" the lock you know by keeping pressure on it while turning the numbers until I got the correct code. We ended up skipping so much of the puzzle, it was so difficult to explain how we defeated the game with a half hour left🤣

    Easy to do when the lock is in a convenient position where it's relatively easy to apply just the right pull on the shackle while tweaking the dials. Try it when the lock is not in a convenient position for example when it's wrapped around a bike and a bike stand and you're unable to rest your hands/elbows on something solid. Then you'll find it much more difficult to apply just the right amount of pull on the shackle and a precise gentle touch on the dials. It will be much more difficult to feel what's happening inside the lock so you won't easily know when the grooves and cutouts are aligning. Not saying it can't be done, just saying it's much more difficult and time consuming.
    My point is... when locking with a combination lock take a little time to think of how you can position the shackle and dials in a way that makes it difficult to grasp them and move them easily/precisely. When locking by bike I like wrapping the cable in a way that places the dials inside the wheel spokes

    I also bought and picked the first lock, and i want to add that it is super easy the first time, but after picking it 10 times or so, it started getting more difficult because the dials are a little smoothened and dont klick as well. I am pretty sure it also goes for other locks.

Some amateurs may still be able to manually pick it, but it might take them quite a while, and even an expert would need at least 30 seconds to manually set all the pins, possibly longer. I imagine if a thief is messing with your lock for more than a couple of minutes, they're going to leave before they get caught! Look for something easier...

      Just like running from a bear together with someone else. You dont need to be faster than the bear... Just faster than the other guy...

    Congrats! I usually pick those blindfoldedly. I trust my fingers more than my eyes when it comes to picking combination locks ;)

    I figured this out years ago and opened a few locks with the exact same method. One funny one was the lock to the hot tub at work was replaced with a combination lock and while it took me a few minutes, I opened it, but then my colleagues thought I was a criminal lol.

    Great video! thank you! There is another method to that works on many combo locks that you didn't try. If you use a flashlight and look very closely in hte gap between the dials and the lock you can actually see the gate, SO when you have found the gate on all dials when they are facing you, just turn them 5 steps to get the gates in the right place. try it! :)
