It's a fun hobby... then you're challenge is finding people to perform for! Which is hard even for me! I guess it's best when you're in school or work and can just show classmates or colleagues.... I don't have either available to me anymore! So either I'm showing my girlfriend.... or a friend.... but after having to leave Kyiv... don't really have anymore friends nearby. So I need to start making new friends or getting creative about who I could perform to. (Going on on the street to perform to strangers requires a lot of effort and high level of energy.... which I'm not always up for!)

I tried once and for all to learn the faro at the beginning of the year, still not quite satisfied today, I still need a fair amount of force to interlace the cards, I do it from the outside (the corners facing the ground) it's easier for the right index, but I'll try to stretch a bit and do it your way.

It's amazing to me how the cards interlace perfectly... like it goes against physics but that's why I'm fascinated by this. Don't know if my fingers can grip all the cards when finally doing the bridge either.

I'm not here to promote myself, but let me just give you some context.
I wanted to try to raise money for charity, but I don't have any performing experience, and I'm broke. So on 01/01/2024, I started a UA-cam channel and said "Hey, I'm gonna do a trick per day for every day of 2024 for charity, and if I don't finish, I'll get the word 'Failure' tattooed on my forearm."
Also...I'm not a magician.
Yes, that's insane.
Yes, I'm still going through with it.
So...the position that puts me in is that I not only have to _perform_ 366 magic tricks...I first have to *_learn_* 366 magic tricks.
But then, having begun, I realized that the most popular videos are actually tutorials. So now I have to learn things well enough and quickly enough that I can then _teach_ them.
So…that gets us to today, and to your video here.
One of my subscribers asked me to teach shuffles yesterday, so today I'm following up by teaching the Faro - which is how I found you.
As with most topics, sadly, there's a lot of really bad information and instruction. A lot of the videos basically come down to about two minutes of a person saying "This is how you Faro suffle - look, you just do this."
*But then I found your video.*
I'm sorry, I know I took a while getting to the point, but I wanted to be clear about the context, because this is important to me, and I'm commenting on more than just the outstanding quality of the video. I'm also commenting on you, specifically, as a magician, as a teacher, _and_ as a content creator. Trust me, you're well above average in all three categories.
This is just perfect, sir.
The video itself _is_ great. It's good quality, good focus, high definition and easy to follow. Both the cards and your hands are easy to see against the background, and your instructions are clear, concise and to the point, but still really helpful.
The introduction clip, where you slowed your performance down to ultra slow-motion and explained every detail of each step is absolutely genius. I was completely blown away.
That intro by itself is miles ahead of most tutorials, but then you went back and included some troubleshooting and general tips, too. I'll probably model a bit of my video around yours - as an homage, not an imitation, because I'll also be recommending your video in mine.
I genuinely don't know if I could have learned this from UA-cam if I hadn't found your video. I have watched a *lot* of videos about the Faro shuffle in the last two days, and you can believe me when I tell you that there is nothing else out there that is anywhere _close_ to this good.
Like…if someone wanted to learn the Faro, but said they were only able to invest 15 minutes watching video, I would send them directly here and have no doubt that they would come away knowing the move.
Obviously fifteen minutes isn't enough to learn the move, it takes hours of practice, but this is genuinely the only 15 minutes of *actual instruction* that anyone should need.
Frankly, having seen this, I don't even feel like I need to make a Faro shuffle tutorial.
I mean...I'm still going to, because I have to post a video per day, but I don't feel like it really needs to be made anymore. 😂
And I know that you won't even notice a difference, since I only have 160 subscribers, but I'm gonna cite your video in mine, and provide a link to it. If people are genuinely trying to learn this and they happen across my video, I would be happy and proud to direct them to *_your_* video.

Your teaching style is, in my opinion, _incredible_ - it's informative and really helpful, but it's also engaging and highly entertaining. That's a rare talent, being able to teach people something in a way that lets them actually enjoy the learning process, and I just wanted to acknowledge that. I only mentioned what I have going on as a way to provide context for how many of these videos I've watched, how important this is to me, and just how rare you are as both a teacher and an entertainer.

The issue with a new deck isn't about the printing, but about the cutting. Cards are cut out of their press sheets with a blade (cutting die) that exerts a downward pressure on the stack. This downward pressure causes the very edges of the new cut to deform by "lipping over" slightly. I imagine that would interfere with the interleaving.
Hey David, yes that's what I was referring to when I said "how they are printed"... I just didn't use the most correct wording possible. :) I should have said, "it depends on how your particular deck was MADE". That being said, I do appreciate you sharing the precise details for the benefit of people reading through the comments here! I did actually consider explaining about this in the video... making diagrams to explain it... BUT... then I decided with UA-cam I need to focus more on the most important elements, and I was concerned if I go too far off into the details I would get less people actually finishing watching the video. I'm trying to work on keeping the length of my videos to a reasonable amount... already here I had to break this off into a "part 2" video! 😅

You can do it with the finger pressure to close the air gaps! unless they are actually damaged.... then you might wanna get some new cards somewhere. Maybe you can find bicycle cards more locally than the US like the German or polish amazons? Not too sure....

Great guy, great personality.
Getting the cards to interweave just takes practice. Its very fine movement and muscle control that comes after practice. Hard to describe, but if you keep practicing you should just be able to do it. It comes from the way the cards are cut when made. The edges have a slight bevel/curve so with the right pressure, the cards slide into place by themselves. The Faro is an awesome looking move and it does not damage the cards. Riffle shuffles with too much intial pressure can crease the cards over time. But with the Faro, you never bend the cards hard enough to damage them. Great vid
I can only get the first 2-3 cards to faro and then they just stop
@aero_hyper6273 keep practicing, you should get it in a week if you try every day. Hold the two deck halves nearly straight towards each other, angled a little, not too much. The two deck halves should slip together by themselves. Also try turning the two deck halves over, its usually easier in one orientation than the other good luck ♠

I cheat at the faro. I bought a set of plastic cards that actually look and feel like paper cards with a plastic coating. They faro SUPER easy.
Armed with information in this video, I'm going to give a regular deck another shot.
Commenting to help the algorithm, and also to ask how many decks you go through in a week.
Hey Andy! Well I probably use one deck for about 2 weeks before I SHOULD throw it away. But in reality I use it longer since I don't have access to all my stuff right now. I think if you were WORKING actively every day showing tricks as your job.... you would probably use up 2 decks per week. So it really depends on how many different people are handling your cards.... how humid your environment is... Once the cards start to feel too grimy and sticking together and just not performing good enough… It's probably best to throw them out and grab a new deck. ACTUALLY... If you want to train yourself for ultimate flexibility, it's good to mostly practice and learn with cards that are in fairly good condition… But sometimes also try those same moves that you learned with an old deck of cards. That way you might be able to perform even with an old beat up deck of cards at a friends house. But most of the time I try to stick with cards that are in fairly good condition.
@@JasonParkerMagic I've got decks of all ages that I try to work with all the time just so I can get the feel of them. I have to make sure to practice my double lifts on old cards, because they are more difficult for me on old decks.
I only do tricks for my family and friends, but, it seems like, without fail, I don't have cards with me when someone wants to see a trick, and they'll have really nasty cards.
I try to keep some of my "middle aged" decks so I can make invisible decks out of them, or have spare cards if I have someone sign a card for an Ambitious Card trick.
Great tips! I still can’t for the life of me get the cards to spread out evenly like a fan before interweaving them (though I’m using old cards). I can’t even get them to spread out at all… am I missing something?
I'm not really sure I understand your question... can you possibly restate it in a different way? why would you fan out the cards before interleaving them?
@@JasonParkerMagic I guess I don’t know any of the terms, but I meant when the cards spread out a little. I can’t figure it out. My cards just hit each other or separate into several chunks. I guess I’ll have to try newer cards.
@@mnossy11 Are you applying BOTH of the angles I mentioned? And are you compressing the air with your right pointer finger? I tried to mention everything I could think of in this video that could cause issues.... if you want you can record yourself and send me a video of that on my email here on UA-cam.... just go to the about tab of my channel home and you can email me a link there. Then I see what is happening. But make sure you've tried all the tips in this video first!! :)

I wonder what size of poker cards you were using, 57*88 or 63*88
is it that the card bends forward or backwards slightly and when you wiggle it slightly they start sequentially unbend
i managed to get the card to open up, but they're stuck and the cards wont faro in, are you supposed to use plastic cards? or paper cards works?

I always Faro traditionally cut cards from bottom up.
Yeah I agree they would faro easier in that direction, you're right. :) I generally wear the cards in (lots of shuffling, springs, faros, etc) for 15 or so minutes... and then they start to faro easy enough in both directions. I find myself wishing they printed Bicycles by default nowadays in Modern cut instead of Traditionally cut....
@@JasonParkerMagic most of the earliest instruction I found on Faro was for Standard/Modern cut cards, and this was never mentioned. Set me back weeks :-)
Im having trouble with hand position and have no clue on what to do.

Then perhaps your grip isn't holding the ends of the deck stable enough. Remember it should be like a book or a paintbrush... where for each half.... one end is held securely (after squaring them)... and the other end is allowed to breathe more (where they interweave)

This video had no help for me... I have looked at almost all the videos on youtube on how to do this and no matter what I can't! I can't get any set of playing cards to interlock with each other so I can't even prac to get better at it. I have been working on it for an hour every day for the last week and not once have I gotten any cards to mix together and im losing my mind that I want to just give up doing anything with cards...

Beyond useless hobby. Used to be able to do a bridge shuffle perfectly but after trying to do this I can’t even do that anymore. I just threw out my entire deck at this point. Waste of time. Doesn’t help that I was ALMOST able to do this trick but just couldn’t completely pull it off. Hate this trash. Never touching a deck of cards again.
