+Alex Gallegos Yes i have the CECHC, but now i have CECHA01 and this model is the king of all PS3. Change termal paste under IHS too and now is so damn silent. Fuck software emulation for EE. Too much glitch for PS2 games.
It wasn't purely software based. It uses part hardware part software. PS2 BC on the 20 and 60 is achieved by having BOTH the Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesiser. The PAL 60 and NTSC 80 only had the GS. 40GB PS3 and later had neither of the two.
This one is the old 80GB version which they didn't sell in Europe and it isn't in production anymore. The new 80GB's, which you and I have, cant play PS2 games because they took the backwards compatibility out. But.. you can still play PS1 games on the new one.
They split the BC list up on sony's site (search in google for the link) so it will check emotion engine machines OR the new 80 gig so you can see what the issues are before you buy. Ie. Ratchet and clank is slow on the 80 gig, but fine on the 60 gig.
I have the 20GB and they all play fine (both1 and 2). Don't be fooled into the 60/80 BS. You can delete that crap you don't want. I have shit loads of stuff on and it has tons of room. It's overkill.
The 20GB and 60GB included the original Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesizer chips in a single dye...... In the 80GB version, they removed the EE and left the GS chip to help make the console cheaper...... That's why some of the PS2 games are slow on the console... For example, Ratchet and Clank plays rather slow on the 80GB model... Sony got rid of the GS chip in every future release of the PS3, which meant no PS2 compatibility via Software nor Hardware...
To answer the question you answered yourself with in the beginning: The 80 GB PlayStation 3 (I have one myself) plays between 70-80% of all PS2 titles, and all the PS1 titles that weren't ruled out of backwards-compatibility from the PS2 era. However, like the previous commentor, I do feel bad getting the 80 GB version, because the 60 GB PS3 indeed wipes the floor with the 80 GB PS3. At least in terms of backwards-compatibility.
I also heard people say that because the 80 gig doesn't have the emotion chip that the 60 gig used to play ps2 games that it would be able to play as many ps2 games as the 60 gig. It that true?
A lot of people do. Especially because I still have my PlayStation 2 hooked up. It's always hooked up, compared to my PlayStation 3 which is almost never hooked up. I've got my three favorite systems hooked up to a 46" LCD TV: Super Nintendo, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 2. I only hook up the PS3 to play LittleBigPlanet lol.
so it plays them better with out the screen split problem or the resolution problem playing ps1/ps2 games which happens on my 60gb ps3 and i to play around with the settings to get them to play correctly which i shouldn't have to go through that bs hopefully a firmware update will correct that for 60gb ps3 owners
i think you are spredding around the wrong information. there are two models of the 80 gb ps3, the old one and the new one, the old one runs ps2 games and ps1 games, but not all of them, the NEW ps3, the one currently being marketed DOES NOT play ps2 games and ps1 games, the only ones that will run ps2 games are: OLD 80gb, 20gb, and 60gb.
this guy's got the early model 80GB PS3 with the shiny chrome and 4 USB ports, basically at the time Sony put an 80GB HDD in a 60GB model; but the newer 80GB PS3's dnt have the shiny chrome and only 2 USB ports, just like the 40GB PS3 models, the newer 80GB models and higher cannot play PS2 games for now
why are they making so many different versions of the ps3? just make a 40gb a 60gb and 80gb and a 160gb. and make them all compatible with ps and ps2 games. sony is really making stupid moves and getting people really upset with them. this sound gay but its like making new friends, but keepin the old 1z. (ps3 models) (software) i was pissed off when i found out my 480 dollars system couldnt even do something as simple as play older versions of its most popular games. up yours sony
OMG! you need to do some research... AUGUST 2007 Model PS3 80Gb= 4 usb ports, and backwards compatibility (PS1, PS2) November 2008 Model PS3 80Gb= 2 usb ports only, backwards compatibility (PS1 only) Sony computer entertainment company stopped manufacturing the FIRST GEN PS3 in late August 2007. mostly becuase of manuactureing bugs on the software, IE; Blu Ray lens not reading/ Hard disk drive frying under excessive use. Take care of yours man, becuse it one of a kind.
djnat619: It all comes down to money. Sony realized that the PS2 was still selling strong so they got rid of the BWC to make more money off of two consoles. PS3 owners will be forced to buy (or keep) their old hardware in order to enjoy their PS2 games. I was also upset when I realized that my 80Gb PS3 couldn't play my PS2 software, but I still have my PS2 so no big deal I guess. I'm still a loyal Sony fan no matter what.
Why they had to remove backwards compatibility on new ver???its true that ps3 games nowadays have better graphic.but sum ps2 games have better storyline and gameplay.. i hav many fav ps2 game and was hoping will able to play it on ps3.but NO!! they had to remove bc ..dammitt~~~
dude, no offense but good luck finding the earlier 80GB PS3's, only the 60 and early 80GB PS3 models can play PS2 games (not to sure bout the 20GB) but the 40, 80 (newer) and 160GB PS3 models cannot at the moment play PS2 games, they can play PS1 games but at the moment, cannot play PS2 games
Lucky ...Sony is not selling more PS3 with backward compatibility .I did the effort to buy a PS3 160 GB , but I did'nt know that this version don't have backward compatibility T^T ,I wanted play my favorites PS2 ,so What I gonna do ? Buy a PS2 sistem ? Bah ... If somebody know how get a way to bring some software to the PS3 let me know please , I'll be grateful ^_
sorry for so many questions but i'm about to buy ps3 this christmas and i need people to answer my questions. 1-does the 80GB ps3 play ps2 games? because i want to keep my good games (alot of reasons). 2-can i play my ps2 saved data games in a ps3? 3-heard rumors that the new 80 gig dont play ps2 games? 3-ANY OTHER THINGS YOU NEED TO SUGGEST? about the price, hardware, features?
i have the newer 80GB so no ps2 games but i can create ps2 memory cards for some odd reason...why is sony turning me against the PS3? it took a long time just too open up too the blasted thing (buy one) and now this...
Hi!! I want to buy a Play 3 compatible with Play 1 and 2. My question is: What is the model of your Play 3? And did you bought it in 2007 or 2008¿... Some people say that I need a special model like "CHECHHE or CHECHHA". Is This true¿ Thats why I need to Know the model of your Play 3.
the only 80 gig ps3 were the limited edition with MGS4 and it was with software emulation. Not all games were compadible, not like the 60 gig were it had hardware install on ps3 unit. as of now all recent and 80 gig and 160 gig and 40 gig ps3 do not play older software titles.
I went out to buy a PS3 today, I've hard that It cannot play my tons of PS1 and PS2 games which i invested almost over thousand of dollars, i said : No, thanks, I will not buy! Fuck! And my adventure with Sony and Playstation consoles, over... Yeah, now, really.. "Game Over".
Maybe you shouldn't type things that warrant criticism. Maybe you shouldn't eff with technology you don't have a full understanding of. And maybe you should just buy what you want, stop crying about stuff you get for FREE, and realize that no one really cares about your problems. Just a thought... =)
the PS3 80gig version will only play 56% of ps1 / ps2 titles where the PS3 60 gig will play 97% of of the old games. And now the 80 gig PS3 was deleated becouse they have 120-160 gig PS3 coming out in Japan in November 2008. Google Search - Sony Playstation 3 160GB
It doesnt matter hardly anyone will play them anyway i guarantee you you may play them for about 5% of time compared to PS3 games and stuff but chances are you won't its just nincer to have it :P Personal experience with my 60gb one which crashed XD
I heard the PAL (UK etc.) PS3 is exactly the same as the 40GB in terms of features including NO BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY :( Just a bigger HDD. Is this true. Can someone tell me the TRUTH as to whether or not the PAL 80GB PS3 CAN play PS2 games.
theres a add on on the playstation store that should let you play ps2 games on you're ps3. I have an 80gb as well and just downloaded it but I don't have any ps2 games on me at the moment so i havent confirmed that it works
I got a ps3 80g and it does play some ps2 and alot of the ps1 how many not sure but its only the 80g that came out when the ps3 frist drop the one with the 4 usb ports the new 80g (really the 40 with a bigger hdd) doesnt
yea no problem you go to "Add-ons" then "Disc-Based Games Add-Ons" then just scroll down to the P's and its called PS2 System Data. but like said before I'm not haven't actually tested to see if it works
My 80gb PS3 has played every PS1 and PS2 games I have inserted... (it's the one that came with the MGS4) what does my PS3 doesn't have comparing it with others??? thanks for the one(s) who answer
i cant get any ps2 or ps1 games to work on my ps3. what do i have to do? i mean i have a huge amount of ps2 games and was told i could play ps2 games on the ps3. what do i have to do? some one plz tell me
thing is there are 2 versions of the 80gig ps3 the ntsc one (usa) which plays or can be updated from ps store to play ps2 and the pal version (uk) which can not play ps2 nor be updated to play them.
No but you're not getting your money's worth. If you put a a PS2 with normal Y R W cables then it would look like shit. Just get a 720p Plasma its not that expensive anymore and use component
i am still getting a 60 gig because its cheaper and i almost have enough money for the 60 gb.if you wanna find the 60 gig go to best buy.you have a way more chance of getting the 60 gig in best buy
i don't see why they make such a big deal of it... just segregate 500k or a gig worth of mem for a virtual memory card and it would be fine... but no. bastards.
i also have the 80gb and the only why i got that one because it's backward compatibility with any ps1 or ps2 games and i have a lot of ps2 game's so my money was worth buying this system.
u got the one with 4 usb port and a silver bottom ps3.. but the black bottom and 2 usb ports can only play ps1 and ps3 games.. so yeah.. u get the better model of 80GB
THE PS3 DOES NOT play ps1 or ps2 games, if some do, it is just because of the emulating capabilities on them. Just the 60GB and the 20GB are fully backward compatible.
I've got the 80gb ps3 which was free after my 40gb one failed to load discs from CEX UK I've only paid for the 40gb one and double the space on it so I love it.
you had some bundles with special 80 gb consoles like the mgs4 and the motorstorm bundle the playstations in the bundles have the cardreader to and 4 usb slots
pisses me off that y wud u buy a ps3 thts over £400 n then moan and stuff tht u cnt play ur ps1 n ps2 games on it, jesus jus stick with ur old consoles
1 thing about the 80 gb ps3 is that if u get the 80 gig ps3 with no ps3 game included, it is not backwards compatable, if u get an 80 gig ps3 with a game included, like that motor storm game u have will be backward compatable, but the ps3 80 gig will not play ps2 games, but it will play ps1 games on it for some reason, hoped this helped :D
the old ps3 looks alot better then the new ones.
sony should make everybody happy and re-release the 60gb ps3 with all the bugs worked out and a bigger harddrive
Yes it played ps2 games but it's purely software based, unlike the original 20 & 60gb models that actually had the emotion engine built in
+Alex Gallegos
Yes i have the CECHC, but now i have CECHA01 and this model is the king of all PS3. Change termal paste under IHS too and now is so damn silent. Fuck software emulation for EE. Too much glitch for PS2 games.

im here in 2021 and laughing at the comments and non believers.

Who is hear in 2024
WHOA!!!Nice gaming place mate! lol lol lol I wish I had a huge TV like that... ;) Nice 80 GB BTW,I "only" have the 40 GB... ;)
i still have the old model of the ps2 its more effective
Some of the series did had backwards capabilities, you were the fortunate one.
around 3:30 did the green dragons say "im dragon's First"

All I know is this, the 80gb model I just bought 2 weeks ago at Gamestop won't play any PS2 games, just PS1 games only.
i also have the 80gb and the only why i got that one because it's backward compatibility with any ps1 or ps2 games and i have a lot of ps2 game's so my money was worth buying this system.
personally the mostly of the ps3 games suck, ps2 games were awesome i cant see sony selling more ps3 without backwards compatibility...gta sa rocks
who still has san andreas
u got the one with 4 usb port and a silver bottom ps3.. but the black bottom and 2 usb ports can only play ps1 and ps3 games.. so yeah.. u get the better model of 80GB
THE PS3 DOES NOT play ps1 or ps2 games, if some do, it is just because of the emulating capabilities on them. Just the 60GB and the 20GB are fully backward compatible.
All PS3 can do PS1 games. It's the PS2 comparability that got removed from all PS3 slims and most 80gig models.
So if you have this version of a PS3, you can play PS2 and PS1 games, and access the data on PS2 and PS1 mem-cards alike? Okay then.
pisses me off that y wud u buy a ps3 thts over £400 n then moan and stuff tht u cnt play ur ps1 n ps2 games on it, jesus jus stick with ur old consoles
soyro i miss those old psx memories
i dont play my ps2 enough to buy a slim but i want the ability to play them! gah! sony are a bunch of nazis just want more sales for their ps2s!
I play God of War 2 on my 80gig all the time. There is a free download on the playstation Network Store that lets you play PS1 And PS2 games
whether or not it plays ps1 doesn't matter. I'll just play the fucking ps1 games on my computer. What i want is the ps2 compatability.
Wait I’m so confused is the PS3 80gb is backwards compatible on PS2 games ?
Nice, but I'm sure you won't worry too much about backward compatibility because you still keep your PS1 and PS2
so the chrome 80gig ps3 is the older version and bc.... i got 80 gig with no chrome, does that mean its a newer version and not bc?
im getting a ps3 80b in 3months but i want to be able to play all my ps2 games on it how how choose one that will play all??????
The game saves on the hdd. But to use the PS2 memory card on the PS3 you need the memory card adaptor
only the ps3s with 4 usb ports are backwards compatible
u got ps3 now---dump the ps 1 and 2 and get urself a brand new 1876 Yellow Jacket Pinto. sonnn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
open up ur ps2 and open the disk tray then using a q-tip clean the laser. and blow out any dust.
i have 80gb backwards compatible it will play my ps 1 games, but not my ps2 games it says the disc is unsupported
im gonna buy another ps3 when i get a job and im gonna make sure it can play ps2 games. mine now can't =[
So you are saying that it doesn't play any PS1 or PS2 games...... but it can play PS1 and PS2 games... -_-
isnt there a software on the simpsons game that you install it and you can play ps2 games on the ps3 80 GB?
HOLD UP!
i thought only the 60GB had the shiny silver thing
not a 80 , 40 or 160 gig
will it work i saw in the playstation store a software that you can play ps2 game on ps3 80gb is it true
haha, If you listen carefully you can hear the PS3 screaming: SHUT UP, YOU'RE OBSOLETE NOW BEE-ATCH!
i have 80gb 2 usb ps3 and it wont play any games is something wrong i wrote sony but no word back
because all ps3's plays ps1 games but the 60gb and the 1st 80gb plays ps2 and ps1 games mines work
if i use my ps2 mem card on my ps3 can i save my games on that or does the game save on the hdd?
only the 20gb 60gb, and the first verion of the 80gb have backwaRDS COMPATABILITY
Super old comment I know but all PS3 consoles play PS1 games. ^_^
cooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool
how come my 80gb ps3 does not have backwards compatability and by the ps3 160 gb is out now
is it true that sony has stopped producing the 60gig ps3?? and only still produce the 40?! :O
does the backwards compabilty come with the ps3 or fo i have to buy it pls reply to me
he talks about the old 80gb model, america only, the new 80gb model cant play ps2 games.
yeah, but the problem is i live in an island(aruba)and i cant get to sony from here
You should of used gta san Andreas or dbz budakia tenciechi 3 as the ps2 game
Thats not the newer 80Gb model as the new ones do not have the chrome front plate.
playstation 3 80 gb pal doesn't run ps2 or ps1 games but ntsc plays
how? i would really like to know if you can somehow update it...
they made old 80gb ps3's that had the chrome disk tray outline it is a 80gb
That's the 60gb b/c of the texture, I have a 80GB and it's not shiny
That’s an 80gb. There is two different versions of the 80gb. 2 usb and a 4 usb you must have gotten a 2 usb.
Exactly I have 80gig(not shiny) doesn't play ps2 or ps1 games..
