Sadly the PS5 is not backwards compatible. But is it at least worth it? Check out my review here: ua-cam.com/video/DhLLwjnOMgM/v-deo.htmlsi=TpiTKRRSebmqB_TJ
The PS5 isn't backwards compatible with PS1, PS2, and PS3 game discs, but it is backwards compatible with PS4 game discs though including digital PS4 games since PS4 games are backwards compatible on the PS5.
@@HollowRick I totally agree too! I even already have a PS5 as well as a backwards-compatible PS3 model, which is the original 60 GB model, and it still works fine so far too for the time being even though I've had the PS3 now for a while already.
To further care for those original units: Definitely clean it up well and replace the thermal paste. Most people, including myself, also recommend jailbreaking the system just to have more control over it. The main benefit for longevity being you can manipulate the fan settings, so keep it consistently increased or make sure your console doesn't go over a certain temperature.
Matthew - you can, just don't poorly pirate/mod the games you go online with (meaning they can't have modified eboots) and remember to clear your app_home history of multiman/any homebrew before signing in
My CECHA01 is definitely treated like a baby, I found it at a Goodwill in Fontana, California in a electronic cable pile basket, completely beat up, covered in dirt and lint, the top cover was completely scratched, the chrome part was completely chipped and scraped, the minute I picked it up I knew from how much it weighed that it was The Real Deal, bought it for 15 Dollars, took it home, tested it and it ran perfectly, I cleaned it thoroughly and it now sits in a display case and yes I still use it from time to time!
Nice. I got an E01 from a Value Village for $40 a couple years ago. Someone had been inside it and the disc drive is totally ruined, but it runs great otherwise. I finally cleaned it, replaced the thermal paste, and installed CFW this week. Maxxed out at 51C running Silent Hill 2 with the custom fan settings so hopefully it lives a long while. I got a parts console coming that I'm going to steal the disc drive from to fully restore this thing to play my real discs.
@@Tanzu15had a friend give me a a01 model years ago for free cause it had the yellow light and I finally just brought it in to get fixed for $80. Dudes great at fixing things too. Probably gonna jailbreak it but the thing probably hasn’t been turned on since 2010 at least.
It's amazing to think that I have access to 5 generations of playstation via the two consoles pulled in to my TV. I recently picked up an E01 model for around 100 bucks, and with my launch day PS5 I don't have to constantly unplug or plug in any systems. Yeah for backwards compatibility!
How much is the 60 gb one worth these days i just bought an old dusty one and cleaned it up and got it running alot of people are offering me money and some as high as 200
Still have my day one A01. I've taken good care of it through the years, with cleanings, thermal compound change every year, and it's still going solid. Think I have a keeper thankfully, as it's given no problems whatsoever. Nice video all around, but really, not sure "remasters" is even remotely viable as an option. PS2 had over 3,800 games released for it, and not even a fraction have been remastered. Nah, the A01/E01 PS3's are still the way to go, aside from PCSX2. To say nothing of unwanted changes and abnormalities in the remasters. More often than not, they are pretty crappy quality.
@@xKingReyx I intend to. It's nice to have one system, that plays three generations, while outputting through HDMI to boot. I mean, I actually use the thing quite often, because I play lots of retro stuff. Namely, PS1/PS2/Xbox. I also have a YLOD A01 system, which I just resurrected yesterday by changing out those garbage capacitors. All these years I believed the tale of it being a solder problem, just like everyone else. Nice to know now, that it's not. It works like a charm again, thankfully. I have a B01 YLOD as well, which I hope to fix by the same method. Fingers crossed.
@DatriaxSondor, Yeah, I assumed that the ylod was almost always a solder failure. But it's nice to know that those capacitors are another culprit incase the ylod keeps happening.
Datriax Sondor You ever delid? I bought an A01 almost 5 years ago and simply replaced the thermal compound and pads. Still works great so I have to imagine at this point delidding a 14 year old console wouldn’t change much.
So from an experienced modder with an A01: I would not agree that the fixes for this model are just a “stopgap” solution. If you do the full job and replace caps, reball, modify the heatsink and put in an E01 power supply, it will basically last forever. Also replacing the stock hdd with a larger one from a better brand (my stock was Toahiba). Mine still gets at least a few dozen hours of use every year and is going strong 8 years after mods.
@My penis is unbelievably small, but I bought both my A01 and E01 non-working. I'm real cheap. In fact, I probably only learned how to do any of this because I'm so cheap ;p
Hi, do know if someone has a tutorial for a newbie on how to do all of this? I would like to get a BC PS3 but im afraid of not knowing how to maintain it enough and running it to the ground in the process.
@@IWill_iTV There are a few videos on UA-cam about it, but I haven't actually watched them. I think I originally learned from forums when the PS3 was still current. If it's hard to find guides on an all-in-one process where someone replaces everything, you can probably find individual guides. I'll list the stuff you want to do. 1. Upgrade the power supply. If it's the oldest A,B or C model, it's the absolute worst so this is a must. The E,G or H series PSU is better and can be a replacement for the older model (what I did). There were also 3rd party ones BITD, like where people used a generic PSU and fabricated brackets, but no idea if those still exist. There is actually a cheap half-fix of just spacing the older ones off the board like the newer ones to gain a little cooling. 2. Replace numerous capacitors (anyone can learn to do this easily with a soldering iron, one of the simplest circuit repairs). If you search "PS3 phat capacitor upgrade" you should find guides on which ones are the important ones. There should be lots of pictures. 3. Reball the RSX. NOT THE SAME AS "REFLOW" that some do, by which they mean heat it up with a heat gun and hope for the best. You need to remove it and reattach it. This is tough to do honestly as a regular Jill or Joe. You have to use a heat gun and really carefully cover everything else with foil. This is one of the big failure points, but reballing is not easy to do successfully the first, second or even tenth time with consumer tools. You need a heat gun that can do about 400F or about 205C, which is a bit dangerous. I recommend just biting the bullet and paying someone to do it. You can send it to someone selling the service on eBay if there is nowhere in your area that does it. 4. Repaste the Cell and the RSX (do not use liquid metal even if you add copper surface, it breaks down over time way faster than paste and you want to leave this thing closed forever after this). Another mod that is really good, but very DIY is to modify your heatsink. The stock one looks like some kind of alien spaceship, but it's basically an ugly and bad PC cooler. There are tons of methods out there to modify low-profile PC coolers to fit. As long as it fits in the space and you plug a fan in, the PS3 will detect it and turn on. 5. Bonuses: Replace the blueray drive and the internal fans. Even if there's nothing wrong with them at the moment, you can get better fans that are quieter and the disc drives eventually fail, might as well put a fresh one in if you're doing all that. If you replace the whole unit, all the moving parts will be new. You can replace the hard drive at any time and it doesn't require a tutorial. It's a user accessible, labeled bay on the outer edge of the system. You can do it at any time with just a ph1.5 screw driver. The system itself will format the drive and install its firmware. It's been ages and I don't have another spare one to make a new guide myself, but I hope that points you in the right directions.
I forgot to mention this because it wasn't exactly an answer to your question, but getting an E01 to start with that is in excellent condition and taking good care of it is an option. There are a few games that don't emulate perfectly, while all games function perfectly on the originals because they have the EE chip. I would recommend looking at videos of the glitches in the games that have them and deciding if you care about those games. I know numerous people with that generation of PS3s that have just used them upright and kept them dust free, had no problems since new. It is possible if you are careful with it (amd a little lucky) without replacing anything.
I’ve owned my A01 since August 2007. No issues whatsoever. I play it 3 to 4 times a week. I upgraded the HDD to 500 GB and added an auxiliary fan. I also keep it in a very well ventilated area and play games from the first three generations on it all the time.
@@ahmaddabasch8710 For ps2, definitely shadow of the colossus For ps3, The Last of Us and Uncharted, but there's remasters for them on ps4 and a shadow of the colossus remake on ps4 and itd be easier to play them on the ps4 honestly.
@@ssjbroly8735Yeah that's right. I put hen on my super slim and monitored the temps with syscon mode (default of the PS3) and uncharted 3 reached 75C on RSX. With webman fan control set at 35% speed, I succeed in keeping the RSX below 70C
I do dorm clean outs, last year at the end of the school year I found in a room, a perfect a01 60 gig, been using it since, and the ps1, ps2, and ps3 games on it run flawlessly, love it, I just wiped it down, and not a scratch on it.
After latest research and news, people found out that 90% of YLOD's were caused by faulty NEC/TOKIN capacitors which were present in all ps3s up until 2k series. edit: yet another research was made in last 2 years and main cause is RSX being dead. rip f3lix has an amazing video covering the whole research
Wish this was figured out sooner like 2011, because my friends got rid of their ps3 to e-waste and many others have as well one could guess over 1000 ps3 cech a/b/c/e died from the stupid heatgun/oven trick or simply giving up and buying slims which I can't really blame people wanna game asap when they got a game they are hooked to or new title came out.
Maintenance is a must for these consoles. Cleaning dust and replacing the thermal paste is extremely important. Due to poor ventilation design, avoid placing the console in enclosed cabinets. All vent holes must be free from obstruction. Intake vents are located on the front, left, and bottom side of the console. Exhaust vents are located on the back and right side of the console. This means there are vent holes all around the console; keeping the console in the open with no obstruction around it is essential for proper cooling. Also do not use intercooler fans as these are poorly designed and further restrict airflow.
@@management7724 there is no such thing as a PAL CECHA01 (or B01 / E01) model, the "01" always indicates NTSC (specifically NTSC United States and Canada; 00 means NTSC Japan). If you have a backwards compatible *PAL* PS3, you have the CECHC02 / 03 / 04 / 08 (depending where the console is from: 02 means Oceania, 03 means UK/Ireland, 04 means Europe, 08 means Russia - they're all the same hardware just with different Blu-ray / DVD regions) unless you bought an A01 imported from the US. Anyway - NTSC PS2 and PS1 games will not work on a PAL PS3 unless you have CFW installed - luckily all fat PS3's are able to be jailbroken!
My launch BC ps3 is chugging along just fine. Did a complete tear down , dusted and cleaned every piece of it. Removed and replaced thermal pads, switched 15-bladed fan for 19 bladed. Removed the crappy thermal paste, and instead went for graphite "paper". And just to be sure, installed some DIY temperature control measures. Haven't had any freezes, YLOD or scares for 14 years now 👌
Seems like you were ahead of your time by doing these now-mandatory maintenance methods long time ago. Hope your Launch Model PS3 is still doing fine...
@MOZZYTHE1ST Yeah I've heard about de-lidding, I've also heard some others claim the Toshiba or was it NEC chips were the culprit. I'm gunna read into some more, definitely will hit you up after.
I still remember when my A01 PS3 got the Yellow Light of Death in early 2010 when I was playing MW2. I got it fixed, played it for a few days and got a PS3 Slim. I still have it today and it works pretty good. I rarely use it now but it sits in my collection of consoles I own. I still keep it clean and shiny 👏🏻 and she doesn’t have near to no scratches.
I'm one of the idiots that waited in line for this thing for 2 days when this thing came out but mine still works just fine since I took care of it and hardly played it plus I still have the box and the target receipt
I own the E01, I acquired it when I had my video game store back in 2014. I kept it and didn't sell it only for the backwards compatibility. It plays most of the great games and every Blu-Ray just fine and is still going. I love it!
I always felt disappointed I got the partial emulation PS3, but now I still maintain it and I use it as my main PS3 and I am very satisfied with the outcome. My PS2 library is pretty good and in my library it’s 100% so I’m happy with it
Same here that I've had mines since '08 but suffered YLOD twice since I've owned it, I'll be taking to a game shop that will replace the original chips for the smaller ones that came on the slim models and with lead balling and it will be much more reliable for good after that.
@ssjbroly8735 we'll agree to disagree. Depending on the person working on the systems and does a phenomenal job for changing the chips to 40nm and using lead balling, I doubt it'll have any overheating issues after that.
It appears many people think I am saying that they should play the Silent Hill HD Collection instead of the originals on these PS3s. God no, when I refer to PS2 HD Remasters, I definitely don't mean those. Trust me the PS2 versions are the way to go, believe me, I know.... ua-cam.com/video/47YfvH9z8aY/v-deo.html
The Silent Hill collection has been on Xbox one X & S for couple of years now. They are awesome games. They do look run better And nd there's another Silent Hill game forgetting what it's called. Only been on for about 5-month.
The best way I found to keep these Beast running is to get some custom firmware on them so you can have on-screen temperatures of your GPU and CPU and also set the fan at a certain temp. I'm with you man these original fat PS3s are just amazing. Great video man :-)
I've been extremely satisfied with my PS3. It's a B01, but I dedicate it as my PS2 machine. And I love just being able to force 480p on my CRT. If I want to play PS3, I just use my slim ps3. The B01 is hacked as well so it can run translations and imports. Absolutely love the fucking thing to death.
Rick H Nothing crazy. I replaced the thermal pads and paste, and recently installed custom firmware so I could limit the maximum temps. Nothing else has been replaced. Some A01s can also have their PSUs and fans changed to be more efficient but mine already had those. At the end of the day though it seems like it’s basically Russian roulette with launch models. Some people have used them unmodified since launch without a hiccup, and other people who’ve gone to extreme lengths to preserve them experience hardware failure.
Such an amazing comparison. Thank you! Yesterday I bought an E01 and I’m fully disassembling/cleaning it and adding new thermal paste. I really hope it lasts a while for me!!!
I have had 2 A01s The one I bought at launch went yellow light a year and a half after I bought it. I got it fixed but it died again 6 months later. I then bought another one and it went yellow light after 8 months. I then bought the E01 and it's still working after 10 years. All my PS2 games seem to play fine and I have had no real issues. I now use my E01 as a dedicated PS2 since I bought a super slim 500gb for my PS3 games. Thanks for the video I just subscribed. 😁
Great video! I STILL have my "metal gear solid" edition PS3 (upgraded to 500 GB hard drive) and it has served me FLAWLESSLY for 12 years! I have an extensive PS2 library that I still love as well as a small 3D Movie collection. I will NEVER get rid of it..... Hell, I will probably die before it does.
I got the yellow light of death way back in the day playing RE5. I never knew what was wrong with it, but I ended up trading it in to get a 500GB super slim. Recently found an E01 and it works like a charm
I managed to get lucky last year and found an A01 at an affordable price. The thing was caked in dirt and dust to the point where the usb ports looked like they were unusable. I cleaned it out though and made it look brand new and even bought a fan attachment for it so now whenever I play it I'm not worried about it dying. The only issue I've had with it to this point was trying to connect to my psn account which I eventually managed to do by changing my password and removing the auto sign in. It was interesting to learn the E01 has better sharpening to the point where text becomes eligible. I'm still happy with my purchase though as now having a backwards compatible ps3 and a ps5 means I have the capability to play almost any disk game that has ever been released for playstation, which means a lot to me considering I have a strong feeling that companies want to remove physical media entirely so that they can choose what we actually own. Bottom line is, I'm happy with my purchase and I'm going to do my best to keep it alive as long as possible.
I might be going crazy but the E01 seems to have more vivid colors in that Uncharted 2 cutscene. I was thinking about getting the A01, but you might have changed my mind. I try to avoid launch consoles because they are unreliable, overall.
My A01 is still around and kicking, I love it and still use it. I bought it used on EBAY back in 2010, the only issue I had was the laser dying in late 2011 but I got it replaced and it's been good ever since, but watching this makes me think I should take it to have the thermal paste replaced just in case.
In the UK we only ever had the CECHC03 model which was essentially the CECHE01 but with a 60GB HDD. My one still runs today and is wicked to play my PS2 games. I find the partial emulation to make the game upscale a lot nicer. But its awesome to see one of these Full hardware models! :D
@@nardo259 Not a stupid question at all bud! :) The only model in which did not came with WIFI was the CECHB consoles. It will be a fat model, with 4 USB's, all black casing (does not have a chrome or satan silver trim my the disk drive. Look at where the USB's are, there will be only a hard disk access light and No wireless access light. That is the only model that never had WIFI, the rest of the fats and all of the slim family have WIFI! :)
I've had my A01 since the midnight release on the day it launched and have used it on a weekly or daily basis every since that day. It still runs like a champ.
I had a checha01 that I had to sell due to a rough patch In my life 2 years ago. That thing was the crown jewel of my entertainment center, and I miss it dearly. If the Ps5 turns out to be completely compatible with all previous generations (especially if they allow you to re-download all your Psn titles for Ps3 and Ps4), not only will I crap a cold purple twinkie, but I will buy two of them on launch day.
If the ps5 could make ps3 games run even better and look better than I’d be all in with the ps5! Having it do the same for ps1 and ps2 games would just be awesome!
Thank you so much for this video! It was very helpful and informative! :) I've been thinking about getting an OG PS3 that plays PS2 games on it. I've been doing some research about the differences between the cecha01 model and the ceche01 model. Your video pretty much answered of which model to get. Yeah, it would be nice to get the launch a01 model, but I don't want to run with any issues with the YLOD. Plus, I don't know any good places that could repair it properly. Unless, I end up finding a modded a01 model that takes care of those certain issues you mentioned in the video. So, overall, the e01 model would be the best option for me.
Ahaha. WOW, dude. Great video. Really put a smile on my face and I happened to see it in my recommended list. Glad I clicked on it. It's such a niche and seemingly arbitrary topic, but at the same time it's really an issue involving longing and it's sort of a bit sad for more seasoned gamers. It definitely makes me feel better about my MGS4 bundle E01 PS3. But I sort of knew the benefits even beforehand. Emulation is far superior to hardware, so long as the programming follows through and it functions accurately. It actually allows for MORE possibilities than what the hardware offers, because there aren't any physical limitations, software can override the... err, well, software it's playing and potentially add more functionality. The good old E01 is a bit more reliable as the CELL CPU was brought down to 65 nanometres. The CELL at the time of the A01 was at a whopping, chunky 85nm. The PS3 really was a good Soviet-Era condo heater. The thermal paste they used was really cheap on the old PS3s and it's for these reasons - among others - that I really gave Sony the cold shoulder and never looked back. It also made me respect Nintendo even more, because their hardware is absolutely bullet-proof and they put so much into its design in regards to reliability and just function with clock-like precision in mind. My E01 DID get the YLOD, but I got the Ball Grid Array reballed with lead solder a couple months later. I also have to point out that something like a BGA reball isn't patch-work. The console will last indefinitely at that point. That was the main cause of the YLOD, solder ball cracks on the BGA. It makes me curious about custom firmware and whether or not folks could tune the emulation in E01 models? The later PS3s also have better PSUs and fans with a higher blade count (more quiet). Here's to hoping that the PS5 has full backwards compatibility. And something even more intriguing - but admittedly hopeful - that Sony actually acknowledge us PS3 owners who purchased their console and got the YLOD. I would still be a little hard-pressed to give them my money again purely based on that.
I wanted a PS3 to play some PS1 games with my friends without the hassle of multitap adapters and bulky CRT screens, ended up buying a CECHA01 in perfect condition (never YLOD'd, never opened). Now we play Crash Bash (PS1) and Digimon Rumble Arena 2 for hours using 4 controllers, we don't even play PS3 games at parties.
@@ultimatespidybawlz2198 yeah I'm aware of this, and I was actually considering buying a PS3 Slim (not the crappy super slim, though) but these were quite expensive when I bought it. My fatty cost me around US$110, but came with some games and three Skylanders packs plus some standalone Skylanders figures which I sold for US$100. So I ended up paying US$10 for a fully functional CECHA01 from some random spoiled kid who didn't play it anymore
I bought an "e model" in 2020, and it's awesome! I have no problem with all the games that I tried to run. But perhaps this is due to the fact that I use custom firmware and disk images that are 100% readable.
Got all 3 ntsc/uc backward compatible model ps3 (a01/b01/e01), all cleaned up in and out and funny enough I use the e01 the most for the sharper image of ps2 games.
@@segagirladventurespico depends if you want the best image quality when playing ps2 ceche01 is it downfall is about 15% of the games don't work, cecha01/b01 have about 2% of games that don't work and has less sharper image quality.
I got the A01 used last year on eBay for $350 CAD and mines works amazingly well and looks great on my TV stand next to my 500GB super slim PS3 console which is still my primary one for playing PS1 and PS3 games.
Very enjoyable video man. I fried a backwards compatible PS3 I got pretty cheap by trying to replace the thermal paste(Yeah I'm an idiot) and I'm looking into other options a year later.

I love my ps2 on crt tv. Reason? Light gun games. When Covid ends, go to Nebraska. (Rent moving truck) they are common as dirt there, and about as cheap.
I've had my 80GB fat PS3 since it was brand new and it survived for 8 years before it finally got the YLOD but got it fixed and it's running strong again 💪
I've been using my CECH-2501 with modified CFW emulation. The minor graphical glitches (how few and far between they are) I can tolerate for the sake of convenience. I'm honestly amazed it can emulate a console like the PS2 without any of the hardware at all.
Thank you for doing this comparison! Been looking for a backwards compatible PS3, and was caught between the two. Plan on adding more vent holes, applying new thermal paste, and maybe upgrading the fan on it when I get it. If simply replacing the Tokin capacitors would fix the reliability issues with the A01, I would probably go for it.
The nec tokin fix is pretty well documented at this point. As for the vent holes don't bother with that. Now that's not me saying "oh you shouldn't care about the themal state!" No rather that's a bandaid that disturbs the designs airflow which could lead to issues elsewhere. All while failing to address the biggest problem spot of WHY these old phat ps3's get so hot. The root of that heat is almost entirely in a handful of facts. First the unit(A01) uses the largest size chips at a relatively massive 90nm. This itself isn't a huge deal if not for the next two problems though. Sony used an Internal Heat Spreader(this is the metal bit over the chip with the writing on it, it's nickel plated copper. Pretty well made). Unfortunately the units are all over a decade old and it's further complicated by sony using thermal paste under the IHS that ages extremely poorly. Finally some of the launch units have extremly inefficient PSU. As in 60% efficiency. Which meant 34% of the power was just getting turned to heat and then sitting right over the RSX. Not good. The good news is those issues can all be resolved to varying degrees. Starting with the PSU replacing it with a more power efficient APS-226(83% efficency! Much cooler than the notoriously bad ZSSR's 66%). So right out the gate we can decrease the heat generated by swapping the PSU if it's equipped with a bad one. Next we need to address the heat generation of the chips. We have two options to approach(ideally you want to do both). So first we know the unit makes a lot of heat, using applications via CustomFirmWare(instead of OriginalFirmWare) or other modifications that intercept and tweak the fan speed. That will help keep it cooler, but it can only do so much if the thermal paste has degraded. The next two options are in varying risk. So first of all all modern consoles use thermal paste. And yes you're going to want to replace it on top of the IHS. That's going to help it transfer the heat much better from the IHS to the massive heatsink that made the launch units 11 lbs(5KG for the non imperial folks). The real issue is that the paste under the IHS has been degrading all this time. Time and heat from running will degrade even the best stuff. So the delicate and somewhat risky option to really cut the systems temperatures down means performing a delid. Improperly done the delid -will- kill your console. When done correctly though nothing will be damaged and the old paste can be replaced. A delid isn't something for the faint of heart or those that aren't steady of hand. Further still you need the correct tools to do it relatively safely. Even then even a single slip up damaging the chip or the traced under the masking will potentially make the launch ps3 into a fancy brick. But when all of those modifications are done it becomes possible to have a launch PS3 running at under 60 Celsius without sounding like a jet engine. I know this is is an incredibly long post but I'm rather fond of these old units and think they get an overly harsh rap due in part to people failing to perform proper lifespan prolonging maintenance. Also while you have it open to replace the paste you might as well go ahead and replace the thermal pads. Things are a decade old. PS: I honestly think the storage capacity comparison was silly. Any ps3(especially these early phats where you don't even need to reinstall the firmware because it's all stored on board in nand!) can have the HDD changed by the end user.
This was a great analogy bro it convinced me to get an eo1 in 2020 lol I have a crt flat screen plasma that takes component . But i want that extra sharpness on my newer tvs
You have a good voice. A-O1 issues were mostly user based from poor ventilation. They need to be in the open, not in an entertainment center. Still have my original launch unit. Works fine.
Wait, we had a 40 GB model here in Italy, it wasn't backwards compatible and had the door on the left shut as well i believe i've never heard of the 20Gb model before
Having found a CECHE01 PS3 at a garage sale recently, I’m glad it’s technically the better one for emulating PS2 games. I do have to fix it since it have the YLOD but I’m taking that chance to play some of my childhood classics in HD.
Before I get a ton more comments about it, everyone knows that you can swap out the HDD on the consoles, I'm mainly comparing these two in their stock configurations. Also not everyone is gonna upgrade the Hard Drive, like I said in the video, its not better to put all your eggs in one basket here, having a BC PS3 and a Slim is the much safer option if the BC PS3 YLODs.
@@xKingReyx So it seems like the CECHBO1 is the way to go if you want the PS2 full backwards compatible (upscaled for HDTV'S) & blu ray movie function? The MGS4 version (the E01) is the one I bought back in the day and it is still the PS3 I use to this day. It freezes during a part in Yakuza that makes the game unbeatable, but otherwise it's the only issue I've ever had with the system during backwards compatibility.
Another counterpoint regarding PS2 games and remasters: While there's a lot of stuff that is out there on the stores or has been re-released, there are plenty, and I do mean plenty, of PS2 games that haven't been re-released on a storefront somewhere. A good example that comes to mind is the Shadow Hearts series, or something like Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria - and these are both games that cause some difficulties on PCSX2 (especially VP:S). You simply won't find them outside of a PS2 disc. Period. I've got a CECHA01, which I had sent off to get dumped, downgraded, reballed, and so on. I'm pretty darned happy with it, though of course now there's way more convenient (and arguably, more powerful) things out there, especially if we're talking stuff like homebrew (the Switch and earlier PS4s come to mind). The good news is both A's and E's are fully downgradeable for those who are interested in that route. I don't know how much A's go for nowadays, but when I got mine some 7-8 years ago, it cost me $600 - yes, new console price, plus I think about an extra $125-150 to mail it off to a guy in Georgia to do the downgrading, reballing, etc. Pretty sure that nowadays it's even more expensive - they were fairly rare then, I can only imagine they're a good bit rarer now.
Man, this vid really helps me a lot! I am currently searching for a phat ps3 and I have no idea which version I should get.. But tnx for you man, you made it easier for me to make up my mind..so I'm getting the E01 emulation version, just because of the durability and maintenance issue of its hardware. Good job man, tnx!
This was a great video, I love it. I just bought a E01 for $145 and I was disappointed because I really thought when I called on the phone it was going to be a A01. I am happy that it was actually a E01. Thank you.
My mother bought a refurbished E01 from GameStop back in late 2013 or early 2014. She played it for maybe three weeks. It got the yellow light of death while playing GTA 5, which was a damn shame. Out of weeks of use, I did manage to play a few PS2 games on it. None had issues. I've had my A01 for nearly four years now. I bought it fully restored, which was pricey. It's still running like it's brand new & relatively quiet. It's got CFW installed, along with a 1TB harddrive upgrade. My favorite console I own.
This is a very informative video! If you want to be a true Sony loyalist/fan collect them all! A,B, & E 01! Never knew the E01 was based off emulation for the PS2!
I use software emulation on CFW PS3 and it works well even on the slim series. It's possible to play PS2 on PS3 after the original release version. You just have to know what you're doing.
Something I think you should know, it’s actually easy to upgrade the storage In these models. I have the CECHE01 and when I picked it up used, it was already upgraded. So storage is not an important point for me, but the reliability concerns are. And if you replace the RSX chip that fails often and you replace the capacitors that fail, these things can last for a very long time after being refurbished. So if you can do that, the reliability concerns aren’t that large either. However the E01 still makes ps2 games look better, although that can be argued too because some prefer the more authentic and genuine look of those games that’s provided by the A01. So if you can refurbish one of these bad boys by repasting and replacing the RSX chip and the capacitors, and potentially delidding, these things can keep going strong for years. To be honest though, it’s unlikely that people are going to go through all of that trouble. E01 models are cheaper, so if you really wanted to play most ps2 games, an E01 makes sense
@@ImChrisHansen. Just remember the fan does not keep it cool enough. So put a small fan by the air intake if you ever use it. Or wait until it's the last one and sell it for like $5,000 or more.
What I'm hoping for is a native PS2 HDMI upscaler mod - not one that has to deal with 480i, deinterlace and then upscale, but one that could tap directly into the GPU and bypass the interlaced video generation.
I have an E01, which I got new in December 2007. At the time I was mainly getting the system to play Blu-Rays (I had a Blu-Ray player that I got for free through a work related award, but it had a lot of issues, so I got a PS3), but as a gamer, I figured I would get one with PS2 backwards compatibility while the option was still there. At the time I think those were being phased out for the non-backwards compatible ones. I actually initially got a refurbished A01 through Amazon's Warehouse deals site (wanting to get the full hardware based backwards compatiblity), but it had problems right out of the box. It would shut off on it's own, and then it shortly got to the point where it would not turn on at all. I even had to have them replace a Blu-Ray movie for me that was stuck in the machine when I returned it. So since Sony's online store still had the E01s in stock brand new, I got one of those, figuring that was still better than no backwards compatibility at all. As far as I know, it still works. It's been a while since I've used it. I also have a slim and super slim PS3 that I got later on. I changed out the hard dives in the E01 and the slim at one point to 750GB each. I plan to do the same at some point for the super slim. I understand why Sony removed the backwards compatibility from a cost perspective. But I still think it was a missed opportunity to not at least have some kind of premium PS3 option with the full compatibility (with the issues in which the system would malfunction being corrected) at a higher price point, even if it was only available through their website or something like that. There are definitely some gamers who would have paid extra to get that feature going forward. I would love it if the PS5 ends up being fully backwards compatible with all of the previous Playstation systems, but I'm not holding my breath on it. It is at least supposed to be 100% fully backwards compatible with PS4, which is cool. But similar to my suggestion above about the PS3, even if having complete (or as close to complete as possible) compatibility with all previous Playstation systems adds a major cost to the PS5, it would be nice if there was a premium option (even if it could only be ordered online) for that in addition to a more widely available cheaper model that maybe lacks compatibility with PS1-PS3 games.
Just a few things: 1. The partial-emulation PS3 actually originally came out in PAL regions as the launch PS3 in March 2007 (it was delayed by a few months for PAL regions). This meant that partial-emulation was the only option for PAL games until custom firmware allowed region-free gaming on the 20GB/NTSC 60GB PS3s. 2. Both the full-hardware and the partial-emulation PS3s produce the same amount of heat. Sony did start producing CPU and GPU chips that produce less heat, but these were only ever available on non-BC PS3s. The first non-BC PS3 was the 40GB PS3, which came out in Europe in October 2007. 3. Another advantage of the partial-emulation PS3 was discovered a few years ago. In full-hardware PS3s, when playing games with upscaling enabled, enabling 480p mode in a game that supports it disables the PS3's upscaler. This means that you have the choice of upscaled 480i/576i or non-upscaled 480p. In partial-emulation models, enabling 480p mode does not turn off the PS3's upscaler, meaning you can have upscaled 480p output. Of course, this only affects a small percentage of games, less than 10% of NTSC games and less than 1% of PAL games support 480p. The following models have PS2 backwards-compatibility (the last digit in the model number represents the region): CECHA00/1 - 60GB - NTSC - Full Hardware CECH-B00/1 - 20GB - NTSC - Full Hardware CECHC02/3/4 - 60GB - PAL - Partial Emulation CECHE01 - 80GB - NTSC - Partial Emulation

I was lucky enough to get a crappy TV from like 2012 that projects my ps2 480i image properly. I soft modded it and slapped a 250 gig hdd in it and I'm off to the races.

Matthew - you can, just don't poorly pirate/mod the games you go online with (meaning they can't have modified eboots) and remember to clear your app_home history of multiman/any homebrew before signing in
I agree, jailbreak the system. Use a different model for online play.

Are there any negative sides to jailbreaking it? Like functionality limiting stuff?
Oh hello mr. Jailbroken ps3
Holy shit 15!!? You got that shit for free. These things have sky rocketed in price.

It's amazing to think that I have access to 5 generations of playstation via the two consoles pulled in to my TV. I recently picked up an E01 model for around 100 bucks, and with my launch day PS5 I don't have to constantly unplug or plug in any systems. Yeah for backwards compatibility!

Keep that baby alive for as long as you can.
@@datriaxsondor590 my A01 is a keeper too, thankfully
Would you ever sell your services if someone ships you 1 of each non working A01s and E01s?
I’ve owned my A01 since August 2007. No issues whatsoever. I play it 3 to 4 times a week. I upgraded the HDD to 500 GB and added an auxiliary fan. I also keep it in a very well ventilated area and play games from the first three generations on it all the time.

After latest research and news, people found out that 90% of YLOD's were caused by faulty NEC/TOKIN capacitors which were present in all ps3s up until 2k series.

Hey thx that is an interesting thing to know. Imo srsly thysm

JustChillingDom yeh we never got a version with the ps2 cpu in pal
just found my CECHC03 last night, its had the yellow light since 2010, so time to restore this beast!
The shadows seem so much more noticable there

My A01 is still around and kicking, I love it and still use it. I bought it used on EBAY back in 2010, the only issue I had was the laser dying in late 2011 but I got it replaced and it's been good ever since, but watching this makes me think I should take it to have the thermal paste replaced just in case.
Just wanted to say, your account is old as heck, nice

In the UK we only ever had the CECHC03 model which was essentially the CECHE01 but with a 60GB HDD. My one still runs today and is wicked to play my PS2 games. I find the partial emulation to make the game upscale a lot nicer. But its awesome to see one of these Full hardware models! :D

Looking like it's only gonna be backwards compatible for ps4. Which I guess will make my eo1 more valuable 😁

Thank you so much for this video! It was very helpful and informative! :)
I've been thinking about getting an OG PS3 that plays PS2 games on it.
That's a beautiful Akira box set back there. I just bought a copy on Amazon. :)
Ahaha.
Well, it is known nowadays that the main cause of the YLOD is bad capacitors named NEC/TOKIN, tho cracked solder balls still could happen.
Event the slims can play ps1 games, it was only the ps2 compatibility they removed later
@@ultimatespidybawlz2198 yeah I'm aware of this, and I was actually considering buying a PS3 Slim (not the crappy super slim, though) but these were quite expensive when I bought it.
Good luck!! I have 4 of them I think I'm going to do some preventive maintenance to mine.as.well
The nec tokin fix is pretty well documented at this point.
@@victoriafoard1994 sounds like u know how to get a fat ps3 running right !

Before I get a ton more comments about it, everyone knows that you can swap out the HDD on the consoles, I'm mainly comparing these two in their stock configurations. I still have my CECHA (The chrome trim one), just repaired it recently. Still an absolute unit.
The MGS4 version (the E01) is the one I bought back in the day and it is still the PS3 I use to this day. It freezes during a part in Yakuza that makes the game unbeatable, but otherwise it's the only issue I've ever had with the system during backwards compatibility.
It’s technically an CECHE01MG. 🤷♂️😃

Why even focus on hdd size when it is so easily upgradeable?

My penis is unbelievably small, but okay

What I'm hoping for is a native PS2 HDMI upscaler mod - not one that has to deal with 480i, deinterlace and then upscale, but one that could tap directly into the GPU and bypass the interlaced video generation.
I don't believe that the eo1 had more efficient gpu and CPU. From what I've found, it was a better cooled power supply and a better heatsink
Just a few things:
The following models have PS2 backwards-compatibility (the last digit in the model number represents the region):
CECHA00/1 - 60GB - NTSC - Full Hardware
CECH-B00/1 - 20GB - NTSC - Full Hardware
CECHC02/3/4 - 60GB - PAL - Partial Emulation
CECHE01 - 80GB - NTSC - Partial Emulation
This helps me ...thanks I have the CECHC03 model..I got it dirt cheap, 2nd hand but practically new looking. I already had a PS3 but bought it simply to play B-Boy from PS2...lol Wish they made a PS4 version of that game...great game.
And that is how the E meme began. All because of a PS3 E0.
I was lucky enough to get a crappy TV from like 2012 that projects my ps2 480i image properly. I soft modded it and slapped a 250 gig hdd in it and I'm off to the races.
