The PS3 is like a Lamborghini with a 1 gallon tank. 256Mb System RAM (a quarter of Gigabyte) + 256 Mb Video RAM. More or less the specs I had on my PC in 2003. Let's say it's an unbalanced system: the cell unit is powerful, the rest is very limited. This because RAM was quite expensive until 2007. Also, he said wrong. Cell is an 8 core (not 9), but its architecture is not comparable to normal PC processors architecture.
Unfortunately sony disabled this feature and it’s only available for the original ps3s after you revert the firmware. The newer ps3s wont work, i have a ps3 slim unfortunately :(

@henryhenriquez Cache isn't the same as local store. Cache isn't read/written to by the programmer. Local store is. The PPE isn't involved in SPE-initated DMA transfers. Resolution and framerate are mostly GPU-bound. But Cell isn't a good choice for a game console, but that doesn't take anything away from its raw processing abilities.
And we got fucked as OtherOS was removed... I think Sony actually could do this pretty easily again with the PS4 though... it has (probably) a better hypervisor (not going to be hacked)... But then again... Most of the things (although I would like a better browser) the PS4 does (today!) is actually almost more then sufficient... DLNA is back, Netflix is there and games can be played equally as I know everyone sitting with the same hardware/controller as I do (no cheating, mods, and so on)... And if I want to try other OS'es I have computers, tablets, and phones to play with...
Well we've already gained access to the RSX by compromising the hypervisor. Nowadays you can use the RSX's VRAM as swap space which speeds up the OS. As for homebrew applications take a look at RSXGL, which is a port of OpenGL for the RSX. ;)
If memory is a factor or it requires double-precision floating point math then x86 is the way to go. If it can run in parallel with very little or no branching, then GPU is probably the best choice.
@henryhenriquez All the PPE needs to do is load the SPE program. Everything else is done by the SPE. The PPE is there for general purpose tasks like running the OS, house-keeping, etc. PPE and SPE have different instruction sets. They are not instruction set extensions on the PPE which (I think?) you're implying. They are separate processors with their own registers, instruction pointer, memory controllers, and even their own memory.

You can put windows xp, but it has to be emulated, but you can only use it for basic things, you can hook up a mouse and keyboard, go web browsing,using word, excel,etc.PS3 is not better,it worse that a pc, but that is not why windows is slow on it,it is because you are using an emulator,to emulate an operating system,right now I don't care how strong the console,or mac is,if an operating system is emulated,it will greatly affect the speed. What the hell are you talking about, there are ps2 emulators, the only system that you can't find an emulator for is xbox 360 and ps3. Xbox 360 is far away to getting to the pc's power, and the ps2 is extremely far, ps3, is also far also. The pc has much stronger hardware to pick from. The pc can replace a console, get your facts straight, the only difference is that you upgrade your computer, instead of buying a new console, you can have a system playing games that are about 10-12 years old!!!
To present my research paper I'm going to whip up code to show off multicore and SIMD. I'm on Rebug CFW 3.55 with petiteboot and OtherOS installed. well my pc is from 2009. and still maxes all games.. your point is invalid. there is a reason consoles graphics sucks bad right now because consoles are far behind. and you dont need to pay allot to max out current games. if you want a pc that just beats the consoles you need around 400 thats it. and it ALWAYS beat the current console.

OS takes about 700MB of my ram but a game takes 2GB of it.

That is, if there's a VMWare binary for PPC Linux. Even then it'd be running in interpreted mode, not virtualized mode. It'll just be unusably slow, and you'd only be able to allocate maybe 400MB of RAM to it, which is well below Windows 7's recommended specs... you might be able to run windows 2000 reasonably wekk, though! :p
I do not own a PS3, however the definition of a supercomputer has nothing to do with it's calculative power, it's about the way it is set up. And as an old-school Unix expert I assure you, the PS3 can be used as a supercomputer. In fact, so can the commodore 64.

Consoles will never be even close to PC, unless in the future consoles become upgradable, much more customizable, and the average console player will actually care / know how to upgrade hardware. But this will probably never happen.

@scartillery no it has 1 core 8 SIMD, and SIMD arent cores, research it my friend.. 1 SIMD is shutdown during production for better yields, 1 is resereved for OS. and 24 ram is reserved for OS too. you should research what cores are...

Well we've already gained access to the RSX by compromising the hypervisor. Nowadays you can use the RSX's VRAM as swap space which speeds up the OS. As for homebrew applications take a look at RSXGL, which is a port of OpenGL for the RSX. ;)
If memory is a factor or it requires double-precision floating point math then x86 is the way to go. If it can run in parallel with very little or no branching, then GPU is probably the best choice.

@henryhenriquez All the PPE needs to do is load the SPE program. Everything else is done by the SPE.
The PPE is there for general purpose tasks like running the OS, house-keeping, etc.
PPE and SPE have different instruction sets. They are not instruction set extensions on the PPE which (I think?) you're implying. They are separate processors with their own registers, instruction pointer, memory controllers, and even their own memory.

@freddykrueger971 well you are wrong in the folowing for listing tittles on ps3 that you believe are 1080p and 60 fps. while we have told you they arent. and its even on 3dforums what the native resolutions are. the back cover of the game is NOT the resolution it renders at. but instead is the resolutions it can SCALE to wether thats upscaling or downscaling.
and so far NO ps3 tittle is 1080p 3d and 60 fps at the same time.

@NoDoubtFilms Exactly, not to mention that Linux doesn't exactly promote themselves at all, where as you see Windows and Mac promos all the time on TV and such. I love Linux and OS X, but I agree. If Steve Jobs would release an x86 edition of OS X, that would amazing! I would so ditch Windows in a heartbeat. Until then, I'll stay far away from that overpriced MacBook Pro and the other "trendy" products that will be forgotten in a year's time.

@schmidtbag did i ever say i have 8 cores? no i sayed ps3 has once core. i know my pc has 4 cores and 8 threads. and pc can have 6 cores and 12 threads i7 cpu you know.
and some pc can use multiple procesors like xeon.
i run windows 7 64 bit profesional.
it idles around 700MB and 1,7GB ram.
but i have 6GB of it so i dont really care.

its roughly equel to ddr3 in dual channel mode.
and remember only one core has acces to the ram, all the other spe cant have acces to it.
also they tried to make the cpu of the ps3 to make graphics like a gpu, by using spe that can do more flooting point, but my gpu is way better at flooting point

but its about cache. streaming bus rate ect and the cell sucks at those.
the only thing the cell beats pc procesor are in flops. but flops are made my our video card so thats a strain our pc doesnt have to deal with.

You can put windows xp, but it has to be emulated, but you can only use it for basic things, you can hook up a mouse and keyboard, go web browsing,using word, excel,etc.PS3 is not better,it worse that a pc, but that is not why windows is slow on it,it is because you are using an emulator,to emulate an operating system,right now I don't care how strong the console,or mac is,if an operating system is emulated,it will greatly affect the speed. I am not sure if this is legal, but who cares anyway!!!
What the hell are you talking about, there are ps2 emulators, the only system that you can't find an emulator for is xbox 360 and ps3. Xbox 360 is far away to getting to the pc's power, and the ps2 is extremely far, ps3, is also far also. The pc has much stronger hardware to pick from. The pc can replace a console, get your facts straight, the only difference is that you upgrade your computer, instead of buying a new console, you can have a system playing games that are about 10-12 years old!!!
To present my research paper I'm going to whip up code to show off multicore and SIMD. I'm on Rebug CFW 3.55 with petiteboot and OtherOS installed. I'm using Red Ribbon R6 for my OtherOS installation. I am writing code in C++ and using the command line to compile using the Gnu compiler along with OpenMP.

there is a reason consoles graphics sucks bad right now because consoles are far behind. and you dont need to pay allot to max out current games.
if you want a pc that just beats the consoles you need around 400 thats it. and it ALWAYS beat the current console.

its local store is 256kb. thats what the programmers have to program in... and it is very small.
the only thing the cell excels at is flooting point. thats something the gpu is made for... so most gpu today over power the whole ps3 by ten folds in flooting point.

256MB isnt enough since a single gras texture in crysis is 3MB big, so you really need allot of memory. OS takes about 700MB of my ram but a game takes 2GB of it.

and 8 spe(weak mini hubs). 1 is disbale to produce better production ields and one is used for OS. so 6 usable spe. and spe cant work without the core giving them instruction. they cant do integrer operation(wich games use).

That is, if there's a VMWare binary for PPC Linux. Even then it'd be running in interpreted mode, not virtualized mode. It'll just be unusably slow, and you'd only be able to allocate maybe 400MB of RAM to it, which is well below Windows 7's recommended specs... you might be able to run windows 2000 reasonably wekk, though! :p
I do not own a PS3, however the definition of a supercomputer has nothing to do with it's calculative power, it's about the way it is set up. And as an old-school Unix expert I assure you, the PS3 can be used as a supercomputer. In fact, so can the commodore 64.

i have ddr3 in triple channel mode. and at 1666MHz thats way fater then XDR ram in the ps3 and i have 6GB of it.
they made a mistake in ram, cpu and gpu, they wanted a cheap console.

Consoles will never be even close to PC, unless in the future consoles become upgradable, much more customizable, and the average console player will actually care / know how to upgrade hardware. But this will probably never happen.

The PS3 did have software for PS2 games(and PS1) but not the newer and better Models which also took away Multiple Operating Systems

I lol'd when the guy said he was surprised a lot people had never heard of Linux. Of course lots of people have never heard of Linux, 70% of computer users don't even know there are other OSes out there. They think Windows is the end-all-be-all of PCs.
@scartillery no it has 1 core 8 SIMD, and SIMD arent cores, research it my friend..
1 SIMD is shutdown during production for better yields, 1 is resereved for OS.
and 24 ram is reserved for OS too.

@schmidtbag here is a list of stuf they could have done to make the ps3 better dont use the cell since its a bad idee, and the cell cant do anything besides post procesing.
use a core system(PPE not SPE), use more ram, and unified shaders

Hm that's cool, I can use my home built gaming machine as a super computer as well. I can have multiple applications open, movies running, songs playing, games running, all on multiple monitors. I guess I'll just use my PC for now...
my pc has 8GB ram. 6 cores at 3.8Ghz a video card with 1.5GB vram. supports 3 screans up to 2560x1600..
and REAL cores... your ps3 only has 1 core..

PS3 seems to be really misunderstood. People seem to believe everything they read. PS3 is a supercomputer because of the cell! Yeah sure. The games and everything else shown running on the system speaks louder than words.
@GIMEchip well depends on what instructions. the xbox360 beats the ps3 3 times over on integrer.. and the ps3 beats the xbox360 4-5 times over on flooting point.
but they are equel in my opinion...
