The image is also dim and the colors are washed out. You end up with TB400 mode but it is not even close to true HDR as highlights are limited to 450 nits. This Asus model is reaching 750 nits in 10% window and there aren’t any shifts in brightness.

It blows my mind how we are in 2024 and we are still having this debate between glossy and matte. It’s even crazier how manufacturers still make matte screens a thing. Glossy OLED is just on another level. You truly understand how garbage matte is once you experience a glossy OLED panel!!!
If you now put a glossy coating on some of the old TN, VA, IPS, most people will not look at the expensive OLED, but clearly there is Kartel in the display🤨
The ROG branding in the middle bottom part of the screen ruins it all for me. If I pay a arm and a leg for a monitor, I would like the branding to be classy and sutble.

Because the general public "think" they need a matte coating. These companies only follow what sells and what will result in them getting the most money.
Most brain dead argument for a glossy display I have had times where reflections were so bad that I couldn’t see anything and you definitely have too unless you’re lying to yourself but you know what’s great about a phone? its something you can easily move with you aren’t doing that with a 15 pound monitor. Plus there’s barely anything you can do on a phone where reflections would bother you at all unless they’re stopping you from literally seeing anything
Would you say this is better than the LG 27GR95QE-B? I'm wanting glossy sense I'm used to that from rocking a LG C1 & am worried about going to a matte coating. I can control the lighting & was wondering which one looks better overall.
@thedisplayguy you should do a revisit on this monitor. because its terrible for HDR in realworld content. When you set HDR to 100 the PQ goes whack and all shadow detail becomes solid black in most hdr movies and series, dark scenes become unwatchable so you have to change to HDR 90. But even then you get posterization and other weird looking artifacts like silver skintones and what not in dark scenes. On a test pattern sure it may look decent but even rtings and hardwareunboxed aswell as pcmonitors mentions that it crushes black detail. I have this monitor and im returning it because it is unusable for HDR. Also HDR 90 is limited to around 740 nits peak brightness. (Asus advertises the monitor as a 1300 nit monitor, but no one has been able to achieve past 1150, and thats with HDR set to 100, which destroys image quality)
Well I got this for 500$ USD flat so I can’t complain. Yeah it’s not the best oled, but I’ll take it for the price to performance. Coming from a 275 hz 1440P Gsync monitor myself. The whole glossy vs matte thing is way overrated. In perfect conditions (dark room and so on) the glossy one will look better, once you start adding light from random directions (especially sunlight) the matte one is better because you can see something other than your reflection. Of course in direct sunlight none will look good, because they can't get bright enough to overpower the sunlight.
Waiting for that one too, especially if it has BFI at 240 Hz it should offer a comparable motion clarity equivalent to 480 Hz bin strobed. But I hope there will be a glossy option.

People need to stop being so emotional about this whole debate. I can already see comments like 'matte's objectively worse', 'glossy's objectively', 'glossy's better in all situations' even though we all know very well that these statements are all false because at the end of the day it's all down to opinion. In my opinion y'all are too defensive about what you prefer similar to how for example Apple and Samsung fans would defend their brand just for the sake of defending it even though their arguments are unlogical. What I'm trying to to say is that it really doesnt have to be like that. We could as just accept each others opinion, there's really no logical reason to lead such a irrational debate where people are trying to claim something's objectivity that is impossible to claim because it's actually entirely subjective. It would also prevent us from how other people from the outside start thinking that this channel is a fanclub for glossy fanatics because thats what people start thinking when irrational statements like 'glossy's objectivly better' are commented even though it's obviously wrong. I feel like if there's anything we should objectively conclude on, then its the fact that manufacturers are at fault because they're not providing us with enough options instead of taking part in those unnecessary and unlogical discussions.
Who's emotional? Anyway, glossy being "objectively" better is true if we assign a goal to it. If the goal is to preserve image quality, then glossy is objectively better than matte. Otherwise, if you don't care about maximising visual quality, then matte vs glossy becomes a matter of personal preference. Matte coatings does degrade the visual quality of the screen, and that's just an objective fact, but it handles reflections differently and in a way you may or may not prefer.
@@PD-ws4td I'm gonna answer your question and the rest of your text separately and I'm gonna start with everything besides the question as to who is emotional. So regarding the rest of the text, you are obviously right with what you're saying, but I'm also not sure why mentioning this because I never argued this wouldn't be the case. My point was not that glossy can't be better if you assign a goal to it, my point was that there are people who argue that glossy/matte is always better regardless of the goal. That's where the problem lies. If you however assign a goal to it, then obviously one can be better than the other, but there's also no problem with people claiming this and therefore that's not what I was discussing in my first comment. After all, it was my intent to discuss a problem and not to discuss something that's not a problem. And regarding the question, 'who is emotional'. Well, maybe the term 'emotional' right here appears a bit confusing, but what I meant is this observation where people get overly obsessed with either their preference for glossy or matze finishes to the point where rationality gets lost e.g. 'x is objectively better' even though this is obviously a false statement. When I'm claiming people are emotional I'm of course not meaning people are on the verge of crying or slamming their keyboard while writing, but instead that it is still an emotion or at least a psychological effect that triggers people to act overly defensive for their preferred finish to the point where statements become irrational. This irrational behaviour caused by our mind is what people should stop and because it is caused by emotions towards what you prefer, people should chill with the emotions over their preferred finish to stop this behaviour. And in case you dont think it's down to some sort of emotions/psychological effect: What else do you think makes people claim such obviously false things such as 'matte is objectively better' while this is objectively seen false? Are people really incapable of thinking more logical than such a false conclusion?
Having a hard time deciding on this or the 1440p 480hz PG27AQDP. Is the coating on the 480hz really that much worse than the glossy 240hz? I play on a 42” C3, so I’m all about glossy. Hello ! I recently upgraded my GPU from an RTX 2060 to an RTX 4080 super. I have had my monitor for 7 years now : Acer Predator XB271HU A TN panel. It's not a bad panel, but i feel like i could get a better experience in gaming if i switched to an OLED monitor. I play only solo AAA gaming (elden ring, spider-man, god of war, ghost of tsushima...) so i don't really need a really high refresh rate. I'd rather stay on 1440p for now. I've made some research and i set my eyes on this monitor : ROG Strix OLED XG27AQDMG I can get it for 542 euros where i live. If i sell my "old" monitor (which sells at around 175 where i live) i can pay only 367 euros out of my pocket for the upgrade. Does anyone have an experience with this monitor ? Do you have any feedback ? If not, what would you recommend ? Thanks for your help.
All panels should be full-glossy with matte external coating use possibility. Depends what level of clarity someone wants, he can use different coating.
Agree. Matte should not be the default. A matte coating should be an add-on that comes in the box that you can take on and off whenever you feel like it.
It is impossible to make a display look better by adding a matte coating. Any unnecessary extra layer added on top of the display can only make it look worse and lower clarity - especially when it's a grainy one that is designed to diffuse light.... which means the light coming OUT of the display is also diffused.
you cant include dough and say they can make good stuff, since they are just a huge scam, they can push out 5 zillion nits and if the panel dies tomorrow well, sht happens you lost your money asus is similar though these brands are like no warranty..... ofc they are brighter lol
That asus chin is a dealbreaker for me. I hate the gamer aesthetic. I can at least hide the ugly stand with a monitor arm. But that chin is way too in your face for no reason
They really just made glossy finish which everyone wanted but still added that shitty oily grain it's supposed to get rid off, ruining the purpose, holy fuck these people making these choices earn money XD
@@handycartmexican5640 lmao bro! Can’t post links to replies, weird. But yeah just go look up the manual for the XG27AQDMG, it has the service timings listed and 1440p 120 is supported over HDMI. If that’s not enough for you, go look at a RTINGS review of any recent monitor from a reputable brand which uses HDMI 2.0. Even a basic Dell G2724D supports 1440p120 over HDMI 2.0 and there’s even an Xbox Series X screenshot on Rtings showing the model’s capability. Monitors have supported this for a LONG time.
No, glossy is not better. Matte is superior. Of course personal preference plays a role. You're welcome to your own opinion, and I know there's a vocal minority that loves glossy. But the fact is, most people do prefer matte - that's exactly why most monitors are made that way, and e.g. the more expensive Neo G8 has a premium matte coating while the cheaper Neo G7 is more glossy. There are pros and cons, but to most people small glossy reflections are much more distracting and noticeable than a larger diffused "reflection" on a matte screen. Glossy reflections are smaller but much brighter, more defined, and your eyes can focus on them. Diffuse reflections are larger but harder to actually pick out. And if you're in a pitch black room then both are good.
I mean absolutely no offense, but surely all these manufacturers conduct market research and know what their customers want better than a random UA-camr. You're absolutely welcome to your preference if glossy monitors. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that and I agree that there are some advantages. But you have to understand that you're part of a vocal minority. I watch a lot of your videos and to be honest the constant ranting about matte and obsessing over glossy seems a bit fanatical. With all due respect. Displays are often glossy by default, and they are made matte as an extra step. You've even made videos about removing that coating. They don't spend that extra time and money putting the coating on for no reason - the matte coating is a premium feature to provide a better viewing experience for most users. Their market research shows that most people want this, otherwise they would cut costs and not bother.
"vocal minority" :D Most people that care about glossy care about the fact that it looks BETTER. That's not an opinion that's an objective measure than can be perceived by everyone who sees them side by side anywhere, the colors just pop more. If you are saying its "better" because other metrics, then yes those can be opinions. But when you can see an image more faded out next to another, thats just simply not an opinion.
More glossy shilling. You’ve been at this for a while now. No one argues glossy isn’t better when you can control all the atmospheric lighting, but that’s not the reality for most people and thus, matte wins in a lot of scenarios.
Matte has its use, but it's about trends in the industry. If we don't insist on having glossy versions, manufacturers will just slap matte onto everything and call it a day. We're talking dedicated gaming monitors here, and most gamers have alien tech such as window blinds.

Idk what magic yall using to get these numbers but I promise even in game it’s crap
Yeah? Try to play Forza Horizon 5 or any other bright game on your QD-OLED in Peak1000 mode. There are constant shifts in brightness due to the ABL. The image is also dim and the colors are washed out. You end up with TB400 mode but it is not even close to true HDR as highlights are limited to 450 nits. This Asus model is reaching 750 nits in 10% window and there aren’t any shifts in brightness.

Is this better than the Msi offerings?
Is the samsung G60SD at $100 less on sale (matte 1440p 360Hz) a better deal than the ASUS monitor? Is it worth to pay extra for gloss for reduced RR?
@ 3:20 - Low brightness which is why i say for pc monitors / Pc gaming its better to keep HDR off ngl.. SDR and OLED still looks good and honestly more natural
I think when you showed the qd-oled next to this monitor, the light bar actually looked way less noticeable on the qd-oled.
It blows my mind how we are in 2024 and we are still having this debate between glossy and matte. It’s even crazier how manufacturers still make matte screens a thing. Glossy OLED is just on another level. You truly understand how garbage matte is once you experience a glossy OLED panel!!!

Someone should build a 32" 1440p/4k +100hz CRT. Everything would be great, except the huge footprint and weight.

If you now put a glossy coating on some of the old TN, VA, IPS, most people will not look at the expensive OLED, but clearly there is Kartel in the display🤨
Good catch, they gate keep glossy coating with their most expensive models
The ROG branding in the middle bottom part of the screen ruins it all for me. If I pay a arm and a leg for a monitor, I would like the branding to be classy and sutble.
I got the 27 g6 oled 699 after a 200 amazon gift card. The matt coating not bad at all and its 360 qd oled. Highly recommend that monitor, glossy is not for me too many reflections.
Is it coming out from LG like this or is Asus putting something on top? 🤔
Kind of weird it's still slightly hazy but maybe applying glass is expensive?
How are you determining the "total system latency"? 24ms seems wayyy too high for a 240Hz OLED gaming panel.
it's the total system, so from the click on the mouse to when the screen registers the click. He uses the same system for all his tests, so you can compare with others.
Hi, how are you? I have a problem if you could guide me. First, I don't know if the nvidia app beta is the best for this monitor or do I use nvidia expirience? Second, is it advisable to use Windows HDR calibration? I used it and it worked very well with shadow of the tomb raider in hdr, but when playing tomb raider (2013) in sdr it looked horrible, very yellow, especially the skin, this could be the fault of the nvidia app beta or the configuration of windows 11 hdr? I use nvidia app beta or nvidia experience, and do I configure HDR with Windows 11 or not? thank you so much!
Idk about that specific monitor, but respect for playing tomb raider 2013. Great game! I remember firing it up on my R9 280x and being blown away

@@noclipphe probably means premium glossy glass. TVs, Phones & Tablets (also many laptops) have glossy glass screens since forever but for some reason monitors have trash matte plastic (sometimes glossy plastic).
Great review. Wasn’t this monitor supposed to be 480hz?
Nope, the 27” 1440P 480Hz MLA WOLED’s coming in the next few months are matte and have the new sub pixel structure.

I have a c1 as well but ended up going with the LG 27GS95QE bc is the improved version
I’ll wait for display port 2.1 and 50-60 series from nvidia to do one last major upgrade to glossy 1440p 300+ hz WOLD with Media Tek gsync modules.

Just here curious bout when a glossy 1440p oled comes out higher than 300hz. Feels like the tech should be ready.
Samsung and Alienware already have one
Still waiting to see the glossy model for sale in Australia. Nothing to be seen so far
The whole glossy vs matte thing is way overrated. In perfect conditions (dark room and so on) the glossy one will look better, once you start adding light from random directions (especially sunlight) the matte one is better because you can see something other than your reflection. Of course in direct sunlight none will look good, because they can't get bright enough to overpower the sunlight.
are you sure it is a good idea to recommend ASUS at the moment.
Does some can tell me the best settings in sdr for this monitor?
its last gen is why. also explains the XG vs PG moniker for their premium line. their upcoming 1440p 480hz might be the first to be great from them

@@PD-ws4td
I'm gonna answer your question and the rest of your text separately and I'm gonna start with everything besides the question as to who is emotional.
And in case you dont think it's down to some sort of emotions/psychological effect:
What else do you think makes people claim such obviously false things such as 'matte is objectively better' while this is objectively seen false? Are people really incapable of thinking more logical than such a false conclusion?
Glossy is just better. I own a LG G3 and it’s amazing

I've made some research and i set my eyes on this monitor : ROG Strix OLED XG27AQDMG
I can get it for 542 euros where i live. If i sell my "old" monitor (which sells at around 175 where i live) i can pay only 367 euros out of my pocket for the upgrade.
Does anyone have an experience with this monitor ? Do you have any feedback ?
If not, what would you recommend ?
Thanks for your help.
So the mysterious question, why is no C series coating on monitors problem solved.

Matte is objectively worse. No other industry uses it for this reason. Matte is used on low quality devices typically.
@@thedisplayguy That's just your opinion man. It's not objective at all, it's subjective. Glossy feels really cheap and low-quality to me personally.
@@Ramesiel matte is at least measurably worse, it reduces clarity and brightens the black point.
