When Vincent talks I listen.
Just listen carefully, and dont be a 🐑
You put all other glossy vs matte screen videos to shame.
Not really, doesn't show proper up close comparisons like others.
What's interesting to me is that the reflection on the glossy QD-OLED, although clear, looks so much darker than the others.
This matches my experience with having a bright window behind my back. Yes, I can clearly see the trees outside but text remains perfectly readable through the reflection, something I cannot claim for matte screens used in the exact same spot.
Same, I use my AW2725DF right beside a window and very rarely am I bothered by reflections.
Thank goodness people are finally saying it. Glossy is objectively better. Matte does worse with handling reflections. Anyone trashing glossy has never used glossy.
I own an LG matte monitor and a glossy Apple studio display. I can actually see the Apple display with blinds open right next to me. All I see is matte haziness on the LG.
@@bren.r but the Alienware does not have a (normal) glossy finish
@@bren.r I did use glossy.
I had nothing but problems with it. Thus far glossy has been more farty than anything to me
@@bren.r You own one type of matte monitor and one type of glossy monitor, set up in a certain way that sunlight hits them at a certain angle. You are a unique case, just like everyone else. There is no objectively better. It's less people trashing glossy, more people trashing 'matte' as if all matte monitors somehow became garbage in the last couple months.

ASUS ROG Strix XG27AQDMG Review would have been a better title right?
No one who is not already deep in monitor comparisons would know what that is - this is a more approachable title to normal people
So glad to finally see glossy finishes hitting OLED monitors. Hope they bring it to 4K WOLED monitors next. I've been looking into the MSI MPG 321URX, but it'd be nice to have a similar glossy MLA/WOLED option.
Even if they offered it in glossy, I have zero interest given how these panels just do not get bright enough. An absolute joke especially during the daytime, even at full brightness.
@@bren.r I guess it just depends on one's use case. I'm currently using a cheap-ass IPS display in a room with fairly standard daytime lighting and I have the display brightness literally set to zero on the given scale and it looks fine. So I think I'm probably closer to the target demographic.
@@bren.r I am using new Samsung G8 and brightness is not a problem, other things sure but brightness is not one of them.
I had a 50" rear projection TV with a lenticular screen many years ago. I added a sheet of industrial-grade polythene over the screen, enhancing the sense of depth in the picture!
The only time I would prefer matte is on the Samsung frame tv, there it has a distinct purpose to make the tv like a real painting
Exactly - same. Otherwise glossy all the way.
More monitor content please! love this!
It took me forever to notice that he did not talk about the coatings anymore, because he smoothly transitioned to other topics :D
Yeah it's a bit of a clickbait for the new Asus review
So glossy is better
it depends on the use case and personal preference. looking at 1:10 the matte looks less distracting with reflections if they are dimm, but I see how some people prefer the glossy with more reflections to give that depth look. I personally own both a glossy and matte OLED on my desk that I operate for multiple hours a day, and for me the matte one is slightly more preferable, although both are great on it's own and a lot of people simply exaggerate when comparing these coatings.
From all the comparisons I've seen, it looks like in bright environments, the reflections on glossy screens become quite distracting
So glossy is better, but not in a bright environment
Seeing reflections in glossy screens and saying that the reflections give images depth is pure cope. No need to get OLED for pure blacks if you want to see reflections on it.
@@patrikmedia wrong, glossy always looks better in every scenario but one. The only excuse for going matte is if the user of the display is so ugly and hideous, that a single glance at their own reflection will not just turn oneself to stone, but have that stone dissolve to ashes and scatter to the wind.
@@Violet-ui next video: what environment is better dark or bright ;)
I Love Glossy
I love Matte!!! 😂
@@mastroitekI like both as long as its Oled (QD or W)
Matte all the way, no reflection.
@@protato911 And I still have a VA 😂
@@mastroitek VA is honestly pretty good. One of my longest used monitor is a Asus 35inch 3440x1440 ultra wide 100hz VA, use it for 6 years until the Mobo died, sell it to my electrigian friend for 15 bucks, me fix it for another 30 bucks and love it. Honestly if not for buying the 27 LG oled and recently the MSI 321UPX, I can still live with VA.
1:25 this guy knows the real reason why glossy looks better than matte. it's not the blacks or the color, it's the depth perception or the reflection, meaning the reflection itself is a double edged sword, it makes it looks better but at the same time you have to endure or get used to the reflection (distraction)
Glossy is always better!! Better color and better contrast.
Clarity too.
Facts
And reflections
Yep and glossy handles reflections better than matte.
Anyone who thinks matte handles reflections better disputes the laws of physics and has never owned and used both matte and glossy next to a window.
Glossy supremacy!!! 🖤
fr though great video as always Theo :D
100 % accurate. Thanks for fighting the good fight! HDTV test ftw!
I just ordered the XG27AQDMG after watching this video, I was impressed.
Thinking about it. How is it?
@@its_ohhrite it’s insanely good. The HDR performance is just good (comparing it to my TV) the brightness is actually insane as well, I was worried it would be dimmer then my IPS, and it looks like it is, until you game for 30 min and turn the head to the IPS and see how dim the IPS is. I run the monitor at 70% brightness because it’s plenty!
@@Enivoke did you unlocked peak brightness to 100% , i had my on 90% and fear to crack it up to 100% will result in faster burn-in.
@@Enivoke thanks for sharing
@@hallmarkchris no, I left it at 90% thinking of going to 70 as it’s really bright
this is going to be my next monitor. Been so happy with my PG279Q, best LCD I've ever had, time to move on to OLED. Although I already have my LG OLED hooked to my PC its 4K. 1440p at 27" in oled should look spectacular!
Glossy WOLED with MLA is the perfect spot for me. Incredible blacks in a sunlit room. Super bright and awesome
1:44 love how you go out of your way and put in real effort just for a skit to underline your point 😂👍🏾
Thank you so much for your hard work Vincent, you are appreciated 💖
Gloss is boss!
The VRR being enabled below the refreshrate is due to LFC. (Low Framerate Compensation) Not all monitors have this but those are mainly early freesync models which are not being made or sold for years now.
This man is the best when it comes to reviewing displays and its not even close
I love the finish on my new samsung odyssey g6 360hz oled. I hope you do a review on this monitor because nobody else has and it's easily available!
Bad monitor...

I love my G60 oled too! Great screen!
@@axne12 bad screen.

I would love to see a tiered list of OLED tv's from this channel since the tvs are presented factually and fairly.
I went from a full on matte 32" to a LG C4 42" and holy crap the different is night and day. Just like you said sir, it feels like a window that you could just open up and crawl into the game world. Glossy just has this clean, clear, clarity that matte will never ever have.
Got excited, thought we had the Bravia 9 review 😞
Question: In a typical daytime scenario, would a matte OLED screen have WORSE blacks than a mid-range LCD monitor? 🤔
I.e. Even if the blacks on matte OLED screens aren't as good as glossy, aren't they still miles ahead of anything LCD can produce?
if you talk about WOLED, then yes. the blacks on those are like having an LCD fully turned off. although from my experience even shut off LCDs turn out to have a brighter display than OLEDs, likely due to the panel characteristics. as long as you dont shine a super harsh light directly on your WOLED, both glossy and matte will give you inky blacks. QD-OLED is a completely different story, I'm not a fan of those despite the superior color. Never go for QD if you care about inky blacks and don't want to use it in a fully dark room, even dimm lights will raise them and add a gray/purple tint.
@@patrikmediaagreed, the LG displays are superior at the moment at least. I honestly cannot tell the difference in colour side by side, maybe a touch more saturated. Both are great, but read about so many S95B having issues, I would not want to bet on that horse...yet.
@@patrikmediaNot to mention that QD-OLED is waaay worse with burn in than WOLED. 🤭
Glossy is better
In the dark
Whichever gets better inky blacks...otherwise, just get a super bright lcd
lcd 🤣🤣🤣 just hook your vhs up to it too guy😂
@@trappedintimesurroundedbye5477 I own oled, so, I'm just saying why settle for lifted blacks AND a less bright picture.
@@trappedintimesurroundedbye5477you do realise that practically any current tv/monitor available that is not an OLED is an LCD but with a different marketing name?
Not all lcds look good in a bright room due to the extra wide viewing angle filter that causes rainbows and light smearing across the entire screen.
@Sm1udntknw thanks for having my back. No matter what comment you make online, there's always someone who has to negate.
Glossy and black painted walls with led lights in the corners behind the tv will give you visibility with out the glare but I eventually just turn if the lights in my case. The depth is so good.
Whoever decided matte coatings were a good idea on high end monitors should be sued for emotional damage… 😂
I use my LG OLED in a dedicated dark home theatre so I prefer glossy for movies/gaming. Shopping for MLA replacement this year...
In dark home theatre it's literally irrelevant.
@@Tarets matte or glossy anything works right ?
What a great review. I play on console and I have learned that the ASUS XG27AQDMG thicks almost every box except one to make it more future proof: the HDMI port 2.1. If ASUS will add this next year than this monitor will be defenitly in my list.
Thank you Vincent for sharing your knowledge.
VERY IMPORTANT: I just saw that the purchase link is about the ASUS ROG ‘Swift’ OLED XG27AQDMG (cheaper) and not the new ASUS ROG ‘Strix’ OLED XG27AQDMG (glossy WOLED). Be very careful with this because I am seeing a lot of web shops cheating or getting the wrong product. It is easy for a user to miss this important detail.
I get your worry but it is a mistake by that website. There is no Swift model. The model is a strix and no other monitor has that name.
You will see the near black vertical banding in helldivers 2. Alot of people are.
I am moving away from WOLED to QD-OLED for this reason only. They have alot less uniformity issues.
I notice reflections less on glossy screens than I do on matte when there is actual content playing on the screen. When my eyes are focused on the tv plane any reflections are out of focus anyway as they sit at a different plane to the tv screen.
does this mean that ALSO G-sync does NOT turn off if frames drop beneath VRR range? That is how it USED to be at least. were you using Nvidia and G-sync we can assume?
I very pleased with my Gigabyte FO27Q3 , glossy are great and it have not so much reflection for this model QD-OLED !👌
HDTVTest - Vincent it would be nice to see an updated video on the LG WOLED 32inch Dual Resolution/Refresh Monitor since the recent update it received.
Under normal circumstances, raising the minimum VRR frequency simply means that LFC kicks in when below that frequency, it doesn't mean VRR stops working completely. But I'm not exactly sure how this would work with 160 or 200 Hz on a 240 Hz monitor - typically LFC needs the monitor to be able to do the next multiple of the frequency, as in the lowest VRR range minimum you can do on a 240 Hz monitor would be lower than 120 Hz and often it needs a bit of additional headroom.
Also you should actually test the ULMB mode sometimes. It's not just a button that just works, we need more detail, see how it look in motion, and know about the ranges of framerates the ULMB works at.
I know you're not a gamer but please at least try.
Matte all the way. I don't want to see any glare or spots in my screen no matter whatever else is in the room. I don't want to be aware or to manage the lights in any way.
You have glare from the shit matt filter... not from glossy :))
Why are there so few of us? We are a persecuted minority.
@@macgameshistory Well I prefer matte from all of the current OLED monitors coating. But what I want is the same level of glossy coating as on a LG OLED C3 TV. Why can't they give is this?
This, it's a monitor you sit close to. No matter the light there will be reflections, I don't want a black mirror.
Glossy FOR LIFE.
Hair is looking fire dude.
I think Asus is up to something with this choice.
I have no idea what are the statistics and whether people prefer matte or glossy.
But being one glossy oled among so many matt, it would definitely make this display a definite choice.
Thank you for the video Vincent.
Are you going to review the 2024 TCL c855?
Damn good video. Your videos always make me want to go drop money on a new TV. Unrelated specifically to this video, have you considered doing projector discussions in the same vein as these standard displays?
Glossy 👍🥰
Sharper,clearer,better contrast..
And despite the lie everyone is led to believe, glossy actually handles reflections better than matte.
You cannot change the laws of physics.
I purchased the Asus XG27AQDMG and had to request a refund on the second day. The image retention was very bad, I'm talking the monitor's own boot up logo was being retained. The rep tried to tell me this was common with WOLED panels, which I know is incorrect given the time I had with the LG 27GR95QE. I've seen two other examples on Reddit, so it makes me wonder if there's a manufacturing fault.
Even dedicated monitor reviewers seldom dig this deep, bravo HDTVTest! Now bring on those 2024 TV reviews, namely U8N, Bravia 7 & 9, S90D and perhaps even C4.
I went with AW3225QF and I've never had a better monitor. It's stunning
Oh come on this is just an ad for the new Asus, only like a few min actually spent talking about glossy vs matte
Yeah sad to see, felt like an AD. Nice monitor, but dang it made a turn in the video....
I like the channel but that video title doesnt match the content at all.
This whole bandwagonning against Matte screens is ridiculous. People should complain about bad Matte coating, not about Matte as a whole. My Steam Deck OLED with etched-glass matte finish looks amazing with no blooming nor ruined blacks nor anything like that. I've compard it to Steam Deck OLED with glossy finish side-by-side and they look virtually the same in terms of picture quality, but the matte finish makes a massive difference in keeping the image consistent. Using my Switch OLED in comparison is incredibly jarring since I got the Steam Deck. The etched-glass finish makes me wish my LG C9 had the same finish it's that good.
Hating on matte is an opinion that is 5 years out of date. new matte screens simply don’t need to justify themselves anymore, deep blacks + no reflections is just great
@@Zeeves Well to be fair there are still plenty of screens with terrible grainy matte coating that do ruin picture quality, but some look great. People just need to be careful what they buy like anything.
keep coping......
glossy looks better & the only downside is reflections. this isn't an opinion but a solid fact for other 98% of us humans that live in reality.
@@Zeevesya no
@@DrakonR i have both the newest premium glossy and matte. Matte officially is better. I'm the only one who has both and can confirm
Glossy is ALWAYS BETTER
Unless there’s a lot of light lol. Use cases matter.
@@AlanMane I hear you, but the whole APPEAL behind oled is perfect blacks, Infinite contrast, amazing clarity and no blooming, so a matte display kind of ruins what makes oled so good, you know what I am saying? A compromise is still a compromise at the end of the day, no matter what way people try to spin it, and when your spending big bucks on these tvs, it's a tough pill to swallow. However it all comes down to personal preference, so if you are fine with that I see no reason why you shouldn't go for one, though people may be better off getting a high end LCD if light is really an issue, as they can come pretty close to OLEDS these days
@@Agent-iq3sz My Steam Deck OLED etched-glass matte screen has perfect blacks, Infinite contrast, amazing clarity and no blooming. Compared it side-by-side with a glossy model and the image is virtually the exact same, except glossy has distracting reflections in comparison. Not all matte finish are made the same.
What's the point of having perfect inky blacks if you just see your face reflected back at you when the screen is dark.
For programming glossy is definitely not better
@@AlanManedebunked ad nauseum. Come up with new material.

Glossy for me that's why i chose a G4 rather a s95d
Io ho acquistato un 77S95D e sono molto soddisfatto.
@@ghibliavigo1983
They are both great, would argue in a living room with windows the s95d is nicer, but with curtains or in the evening with a light source behind you the G4 is the winner.
I go with LG due to the latter use case, I prefer the build quality (more metal, feels sturdy) and because the menu software is better in my opinion.
both excellent , Colour volume vs 3D look, processing more codecs and 5 years of updates .Plus G4 can be 83"
Vincent, Windows modern apps like Settings don't use subpixel antialiasing, so they're a bad example to demonstrate fuzzy text due to WRGB subpixel layout. Showing an app that uses ClearType subpixel rendering would be a better demonstration of the effects of nonstandard subpixel layouts on text rendering.
Thanks Vinnie!
I love it when a monitor is basically a mirror. Glossy FTW
why, are you such a narcissist that you love to see your reflection?

Yeah so great to have a black mirror with constant distracting reflections.
Have my glossy QD OLED and an older TN Matte monitor right next to each other. The matte finish is so distracting I want to replace it with a glossy LCD, it looks like someone took sandpaper to the screen.
Glossy finish will always be the best display coating. Matte destroys the contrast and black level is just horrible
The QD Oled looks like an ips panel with the light on it.
No it is not. ... check your eyes and think before you post on internet.
@@dorintonyoh oh, someone is hitting the cope.
I found turning off my lightbox solves this problem quite nicely
Glossy!
Glossy all day every day for oled, I had the s95 and the g4 in house even tho the s95d had more vibrancy it looked kinda dead compared to the g4. Very flat
Matte is straight up best. It's a monitor that you sit close to and I don't want black mirror with distracting reflections. Regardless if light control, especially with dark mode or content there will always be reflection. People exaggerate the quality difference, but reflections will always exist and they are far worse con. Waiting to see ASUS PG32UCDP and it's BFI in DFR mode.
Summary:
Glossy is better in most cases. People who say 'its subjective' are wrong. Now this doesnt mean that monitors with matte screens are worse. Glossy vs Matte is just 1 of the multiple factors playing a role in purchasing decision of people.
But why 24p judder when 240hz can be divided by 24?
Dear Vintect. Please do the same thing but with TVs
To what point?
@@Tarets to show glossy vs matte duh. Monitors are not the same as tv. Moreover these are different manufacturers which can lead to different coating different soft and everything else.
@@kristof46 How are they not the same? You didn't ask for any specific models to compare, so what differences do you expect to see? There's no such thing as "TV coating" or "monitor coating".
@@Tarets first thing first. I said that coating is only one factor. Vincent showed much more than just coating. Monitors work differently comparing to TV. We should know how good or bad is s95d comparing to g4 etc.
The matte looked better in the side by side comparisons though! This glossy preference is crazy to me, kind of like using the soap opera refresh rate to watch movies. Yuck!
When are you gonna review Sony Bravia 9..? I'm eagerly waiting for your review of Bravia 9 and comparisons with A95L..
Asus ROG really nailed it with their glossy monitor. I ditched the other option, Samsung G8, as the matte coating makes it so dull like a normal ips monitor.
Glossy rocks!
Glossy or nothin. I wont have my inky blacks ruined by a matte coating
Guys I gotta be honest. I own the PG27AQDM and bout the aw2725df because I wanted the glossy screen. But looking at the two side by side and testing in-game, the alienware's abl kind've ruins the monitor for me. It does look a bit better in very dark scenes with small highlights, but in bright scenes, the ASUS gets way brighter and looks better.
All that being said, the alienware has a clear advantage in terms of clarity due to the glossy screen. It's really unfortunate that the Asus shipped with a matte coating in the first place. Guess the one I'm really looking for is this new updated Asus model, but I don't want to spend the money on that lol.
Is the samsung G60SD at $100 less on sale (matte 1440p 360Hz) a better deal than the ASUS monitor? Is it worth to pay extra for gloss for reduced RR?
My Gigabyte FO48U was the first ever glossy WOLED monitor tyvm
Hi Vincent, any plans to review the Tandem OLED M4 iPad Pro? I’m very impressed with the brightness of this screen compared to my LG G3 MLA OLED, think it will surprise you too.
haha i actually was expecting him to do this by now.
The AQDMG looks cool, but we got maybe 3 mins of glossy vs matte? Must be a pretty quick and straight forward decision, glossy is king
more important than the glossy vs matte debate is the super aggressive ABL of the QD-OLEDs, only the new Asus monitor seems to have acceptable HDR brightness for most scenarios. Hope Samsung can do something better next year OR brands could provide heatsinks.
I think the GLOSSY screen and your GLOSSY LOOK is very cool :)
Hi, how are you? I have a problem with asus xg27aqdmg if you could guide me. First, I don't know if the nvidia app beta is the best for this monitor or do I use nvidia expirience? Second, is it advisable to use Windows HDR calibration? I used it and it worked very well with shadow of the tomb raider in hdr, but when playing tomb raider (2013) in sdr it looked horrible, very yellow, especially the skin, this could be the fault of the nvidia app beta or the configuration of windows 11 hdr? I use nvidia app beta or nvidia experience, and do I configure HDR with Windows 11 or not? thank you so much!
So there was no color advantage on QD-OLED even on dark scene with neon-like lights (e.g: car red taillights)? on games like GT7, qd-oled has particularly striking colors, even if the rest of the picture brightness is rather dull
Not sure I believe it's not noticeable. This to me was more of an ad for the Asus than a panel coating shootout. If he talks about any of the pluses of the other 2 monitors vs the new Asus it wouldn't be as good of an ad would it? For example, he never talks about WOLEDs weak text rendering for example, while not perfect on a 3rd gen QD-OLEDs it is better than current WOLEDS.
@@theripper121 that makes sense, plus he tested the dimmest qd-oled panel according to rtings (i have that same alienware model) the gigabyte/msi panels are a better display of QD-OLED with higher brightness and better EOTF
@@adrianomart I have the aw2725 as well. Brightness to me in a vacuum, not sat next to another monitor, is fine in my opinion. My only major gripe with it is the handling of gamma 2.2 in creator mode. Interesting how he doesn't mention at all the superior color calibration out of the box of the Alienware either.
@@adrianomart The gigabyte and MSI panels are exactly the same as the Alienwares. The only difference are minor adjustments each manufacturer has made. Their overall brightness is basically identical.
@@theripper121 they are slightly brighter according to rtings and have better EOTF tracking on the 1000 peak mode, the alienware is rather dark, doesn't bother me all that much but yeah.
yeah the lack of color comparison is weird, especially considering that it reaches rec2020 80% whereas woled is in the 70% range, know a guy who bought a asus 1440p 240hz monitor and said the brightness is good but colors are muted...
Yep, reading text on the glossy Asus is terrible, it looks like the text is ghosting, had to send back the monitor after trying. Alienware is much better, but you can't adjust brightness in HDR mode, while with Asus you can.
Mr. Teoh, it seems reviews are coming very slowly this year. Anything is coming soon?
Why is nobody using gorilla glas on monitors
Yes why not
It would be really expensive and pointless because you don’t rub your monitor in your pocket 1000 times a day for years.
@@BillyONeal also true.
Gorilla glas armor reduces reflections A LOT without being matte, but it might be expensive and is developed by samsung electronics + corning, so will remain samsung exclusive for some time, I guess.
Thank you so much for covering this topic!
Input lag is higher than on LG TVs for 60 FPS signals...
I wonder why won't they give us an option to set the refresh rate from OSD like LG does with their TVs. Not an issue for PC, of course, but for consoles... It blows.
I am very interested in this video. I purchased a Sony OLED tv and my cat had some nose prints on the screen from smelling it. I tried to wipe it with a damp cloth, it completely ruined the screen. I can't believe how easily it is damaged, Had I known I would never bought this TV. how many people have kids or pet that touch the screen. Vincent you should include in your reviews how prone some of these TV are to screen damage. That is a huge consideration with respect to ownership consideration
Will you be testing portable monitor from asus, aoc, JSAUX?
LCD still much better off Sony HX310 for brightness. OLED still struggle for HDR mode. For computer monitor with better HDR I would rather stick to LED LCD with miniled. And you have better clear sharp text using IPS on LCD. OLED will still have problem with subpixel for text.
Still no Bravia 9 review by you guys or Digital Trends, very dissapointing. I really need a detailed comparison between the Bravia 9 and A95L before the Bravia 9 85 inch goes off of sale.
