By the end of the game it is much happier, with the music being much happier and the whole thing being beautifully lit. I also strongly disagree about the movement I think the movement is so smooth and is so fun to use, although that one might just be me. That’s doesn’t mean I didnt love the video tho, great work!
Oh, I think the atmosphere of the Observatory works really well, I just really don't like to traverse it! Also the movement in general while doing platforming is great and smooth. What I don't like is the long jump and the extended periods where you're only running around on a flat plane and not doing any platforming! And thank you! I appreciate it :)
Funnily enough, one of my favourite and most memorable experiences when I played this game in my younger years was just running around and enjoying the music and overall look of starshine beach. Then again, my favourite galaxy BY FAR is cosmic cove, so I think I just love the water levels.
The best Mario game ever. By a large margin too. It didn't matter that there were some weak "bosses" here and there because this game is simply so fun to play from start to finish. The level design is crazy fun. In fact, i don't know if i have ever played a game with such a huge smile on my face the whole time as i did here. Rosalina’s Observatory has a special place in my heart, and I like it more for purely sentimental reasons. Starship Mario however was a lot prettier to look at and sparked a lot more of my curiosity as a kid due to all of the small secrets
That's fair. The observatory does have a somewhat special place in my heart too, but it's hard not to notice all the stuff I dislike about it when looking at the place through an analytical lense!
@@FromHerotoZeroYT oh 100% I do agree with you and putting my sentimentality aside I can see how Starship Mario is so much better. The addition of yoshi was one of my favorite things by far, and I feel like it added a lot more life to the hub. Great video so far btw! I’m not finished yet but you’ve made me think about a lot of the earlier game’s mechanics than I had before
I just finished a playthrough of this game (well, I'm still working on the Perfect Run in Grandmaster Galaxy, but that's the only thing left) and I'm not entirely sure what to think. If you just beat the game, it's much better than Galaxy 1 in my opinion and is one of the best Mario games ever made. But getting 100% is an absolute nightmare. I actually agree with you about the hub world. I think the comet observatory looks cool, but from a functional standpoint it's incredibly annoying to switch between levels. When I was going for 100% in Galaxy 1, I got very annoyed toward the end when I was getting all of the prankster comets and had to constantly switch the area I was in. Galaxy 2's faceship is MUCH easier to navigate. Plus, not many people mention it, but I honestly love the different world themes. Like how World 1 is a generic sky, but World 2 is orange and filled with clouds, and later on, World 6 has a literal black hole. It's really cool to just look at the backgrounds as you stand on the faceship. Also definitely agree that the level design was better in Galaxy 2. Open areas don't work with Galaxy's controls, Galaxy 2 toned them down a ton. I think the developers were also more willing to deviate from just using a ton of small platforms and planets. Fluffybuff Galaxy, for instance, feels completely different than anything in Galaxy 1 because of how large most of it is (while still remaining linear and flat). There were definitely a few galaxies that I didn't enjoy (like the one where you just have to fight a ton of enemies over and over again), but the vast majority of main levels were fantastic. Although one thing I didn't like were the bosses. You praised them for the most part, but I definitely thought Galaxy 1 had better bosses overall. They felt much faster, like if you were skilled enough you could take them out very quickly, whereas a lot of Galaxy 2's bosses felt slow and tedious. So yeah, I think if you just get 70 stars and beat Bowser, Galaxy 2 is way better than Galaxy 1, but I honestly really hated getting 100%. It's not just the green stars for me. I already didn't like the Prankster comets in Galaxy 1, but in Galaxy 2 they may be worse. The purple coin levels are MUCH better, and speedrun levels are too, but I really despised the daredevil comets this time around, and I didn't really mind them that much in Galaxy 1. At least in that game, it was mostly just fighting against one boss, but in Galaxy 2 they often have you replaying entire levels which felt a lot more annoying. Plus, even when you have to fight a boss in Galaxy 2, I found it annoying because of Galaxy 2's slower bosses. The secret stars were much worse as well. I agree that it was cool that they made coins more valuable by having hungry lumas want coins instead of starbits, but I think the problem is that star bits are very fun and easy to collect compared to coins. To get starbits, all you have to do is point around the screen, so you can get a lot without even moving around. Coins, on the other hand, are much harder to come by and more tedious to collect. That alone made many of the secret stars feel annoying in Galaxy 2. But even then, the green stars are definitely the worst part of getting 100%. I think most of the Green Stars were well placed. They were either well hidden, or they required you to use Mario's movement in an interesting way. But having at least 2 in every single level was just WAY too far. It should have been one per level, then it would have been a cool bonus. I hated getting booted out of the level and going back over and over again. And it forced me to revisit every Galaxy, even ones that I didn't like. When I look back at Galaxy 2 now, it feels like the first 70 stars were so fun and filled with variety and creativity, but the green stars all kind of blend together. It was needless padding in a game that already had more content than it needed. Another thing I hated about them that you didn't mention is how annoying it can be to find them when the camera is so shit. I swear, half the time when you try to adjust the camera it just won't let you for no apparent reason. There were a few levels where I had to look up green star locations when I totally would have found them if I could have just looked around in first person mode. I think it's fine for Galaxy 2 to have a bad camera that isn't easily adjustable, since most of the time the angles they give you already work perfectly. But it didn't mesh well with the green stars, which require you to look around the level to find them. Although I have a lot of problems with Galaxy 2 though, it's still one of my favorite Mario games now, and I know I'll view it more positively in the future since I am definitely NOT going for 100% next time. What I've noticed from playing all of the 3D Marios is that it feels like the biggest problem with all of them is excessive and needless padding. Maybe that doesn't apply to 3D Land or 3D World, but it applies very strongly to 64, Sunshine, Galaxy, and ESPECIALLY Galaxy 2 and Odyssey. A final thing that I really appreciate about it is how it has tributes to previous 3D Mario games (like Throwback Galaxy or the one that was like a level in Sunshine) without feeling like it's just trying to pander to nostalgia. That also gives it a nice sense of finality. Like, if Galaxy 2 was the last 3D Mario game, I'd be okay with that. I love 3D Land and 3D World, but I can't say the same about those 2 games, they just don't have the same epicness as Galaxy 2. And I'm just not that big a fan of Odyssey. Anyway, great video, it's good to see someone recognizing all of the things this game did differently from Galaxy 1, I really don't agree with the criticism that it should have been DLC or was just a level pack or whatever.
Hey, you're back! Yeah, 100%ing Galaxy 2 is just... not very fun. The Observatory is cool, I like it, but there's just too much running back and forth. Especially with how Prankster Comets appear completely randomly across all the levels. You have a point about the bosses. Glamdozer immediately comes to mind. The problem with collecting star bits for Hungry Lumas that are in the levels is that there's not really any risk involved. You lose your coins when you die, so you need a good enough mastery of the game to clear the level without dying at least until the point at which the Luma is. Not only do I think it's a great use for the coins to prevent them from feeling useless, but also having to feed them star bits feels a bit pointless when you can just die over and over again to stock up. Thank you for watching and for the comment! I really enjoy reading these :)
@@FromHerotoZeroYT I agree that the system they had with star bits was not great, but I think the solution would have been to just take away your star bits if you die. Or if that's too extreme, reset your star bit count to what it was at the last checkpoint. It's definitely stupid that you can just die over and over to get enough star bits, but I think star bits are much more fun to collect, so it would work better that way. I guess coins are kinda useless outside of health, but I don't really see a problem with that as long as they design the game around that. I remember a few times in Galaxy 1 where you were rewarded with a ton of coins for doing stuff instead of star bits, and yeah, that's completely pointless since the max number of coins you could ever want at a time is 2.
Yeah, Star Bits are definitely more fun to collect, but I kinda prefer coins for the Hungry Lumas still since you need to physicaly touch them to collect them. Like I said, there's more risk involved but idunno
One thing I hated about Super Mario Galaxy is that you had to defeat Bowser 3 times just to unlock the Purple Coins missions. Thankfully, this was fixed in Super Mario Galaxy 2.
Oh trust me. Coming from someone with depth perception issues, the Daredevil comets can be perfectly challenging and fit the game like a glove. But that is niche, so
The title. That is a weird way to say paper Mario the thousand year door. But fr, I do need to play this game. I really love galaxy 1, but haven't been able to find a copy of 2. Should get on the fence for one
Yeah I guess the title could be confused with the original Paper Mario on N64, but that's what the thumbnail is there for ;) If you're one of the few people who not only have a Wii U but also money in your eShop account you can download Galaxy 2 from there pretty easily!

That discussion about reusing game design is most definitely a problem, gameplay is cool but galaxy 2 lost the essence, music, and the feel of the adventure. All galaxy 2 is is a quick cash grab just throwing in yoshi and a couple levels and completely disregarding a story so much to the point it’s literally the first game with less of everything but yoshi and more levels and that hub world of Mario after being at the observatory is probably the most disappointing thing out of it all, like your content tho
I disagree. The level design and gameplay refinement far outweighs a couple of asset reuses. It's not just the design being reused, it's being used better and more effectively which can be said about literally any game, it's just that you recognize the looks of the different elements here. Also what story? I never understood what people liked about the barren hub that is the Observatory, there's nothing to do there and is just a huge waste of space really. I think calling Galaxy 2 a quick cash grab is super disingenuous when you look at how much work went into refining the level design over the first game, but hey that's just my opinion 🤷 (also thank you :))

Four essays just in this one thread. Nice.
@the40kboyz11 Yeah it's great, isn't it? This is a big part of why I make these videos!
Ive created a weird ritual of 100% finishing super mario galaxy 2 every 2 years and 1 month on accidenr by the way
One thing I hated about Super Mario Galaxy is that you had to defeat Bowser 3 times just to unlock the Purple Coins missions. Thankfully, this was fixed in Super Mario Galaxy 2.
Oh trust me. Coming from someone with depth perception issues, the Daredevil comets can be perfectly challenging and fit the game like a glove. But that is niche, so
Haha, that's fair! I'm glad you at least got some challenge out of them
Excellent video!

The title. That is a weird way to say paper Mario the thousand year door.
But fr, I do need to play this game. I really love galaxy 1, but haven't been able to find a copy of 2. Should get on the fence for one
Yeah I guess the title could be confused with the original Paper Mario on N64, but that's what the thumbnail is there for ;)
If you're one of the few people who not only have a Wii U but also money in your eShop account you can download Galaxy 2 from there pretty easily!
Thousand year door has a lot of problems. Namely the backtracking.
Did everyone forget about the ghost
Which of them?
am I the only one who struggles with the spiny romp mission 😭
I think this playthrough was the first time I didn't have too much trouble with it, and I have played this game A LOT of times
@@FromHerotoZeroYT I’ve 100%’d the game a few times and still it takes me at least a couple of attempts to beat that stage. I remember being a kid and raging at the level 😂. I literally have no clue why I struggle with it so much

Lol yeah, but it hasn't been THAT long since the Sonic one, has it???

Will you ever do a super Mario odyssey retrospective?
Currently working on it, but it's taking a lot longer than expected :)
Bouldergeist is not hard at all why do people say that it is extremely easy
Where are more Mario odyssey hot takes?
On the way!

My kinda guy here, Majora’s Mask is 100% the best Zelda game
The others doesn't even come close!
I'm playing through galaxy 1 and 2 aswell as 3d Mario World. The latter is superior BUT galaxy 2 is better than one
I never really liked 3D World that much, but hey, good for you!
The Galaxy Reactor>Bowser's Galaxy Generator
The music in Bowser's Galaxy Generator is soooo good tho
@@FromHerotoZeroYTI definitely agree on that but The Galaxy Reactor(both level and music)is so much better imo

This video was really good until 34:00 when you had to expose me to unadulterated WEEB content. My disappointment is immeasurable, and my day is ruined.
That's like one of the best parts, dude!

I think calling Galaxy 2 a quick cash grab is super disingenuous when you look at how much work went into refining the level design over the first game, but hey that's just my opinion 🤷
(also thank you :))
@@FromHerotoZeroYT it’s like he doesn’t understand how game development works. Assets get reused all the time lol.
I’m still sad they’ve never rereleased it :(
