An interesting detail about the Mega Mushroom is that if you get hit by lightning while it is active, you simply go back to normal size instead of shrinking down!
Also that if you get hit by someone in a star whilst in a mega, you actually get hit like any other player. So its not “just a star rebranded”, its still worse than a star, it’s its own little middle groundbetween normal and star
A community that's still going strong to this day? Check. A fun, fast-paced game with that classic Mario Kart chaos? Check. Insanely busted Shortcuts and Mechanics? Check. Yeah. 8 Deluxe may be the Smash Ultimate of Mario Kart, but this is the Smash Melee of the series. It's one of the best games in the series, and I grew up with short bursts of 7 and 8.
MK-Wii really just feels right because it's so snappy... with 8 it really feels like they tried to push more "realistic" driving controls... but for the Wii it feels more responsive making for a more enjoyable game... you feel like you're playing the game in Wii, but in 8 you're fighting the game
driving in mario kart 8 is (if i'm exaggerating) nearly unbearable when i compare it to mario kart wii. yes i need to get good, but i think it just feels so much worse, particularly drifting. i'm a great drifter in wii i swear 😭
Mario kart wiis mechanics and controls are my favourite part about it! I love how it controls, how tight you can go with an inside drift, how you need to time your wheelies so you don’t get bumped by another player, it’s just all so fun.
In the Wii you can actually push people off the track. In 8 its pointless trying, because they spawn right back in. Takes away from the whole “wacky races” aspect.
The FIB did come back… kind of. They smashed the FIB and banana together into one shitty item, so now it has the spin out of a FIB (2ish spins + almost complete slowdown, compared to a banana's 1 + only 65%ish slowdown), but is tangible to items like a banana. One of my least favorite things about 8. Removed a whole bunch of gameplay intricacy with that lazy ass move
Man, I still remember that fateful Christmas morning 2009 getting MKwii and playing with my three older brothers. Love this game. Really like the plannable more complicated item system. Love the mega as a middle ground power item. Love the ability to selectively bag. Love the out of bounds system . Love having both FIBs and bananas since they function quite differently in different situations
Maybe I’m biased because it was the only Mario game I had as a kid, but I love Mario Kart Wii. Even though I didn’t understand it and came in 12th a lot at first, I’ve since rediscovered the game and found so many things I love about it. The aesthetic feels very late 2000s in a good way, the track selection is good with a mix of solid new tracks and a great combination of retro tracks, the score is amazing, and I actually really like the battle mode for the map selection. If anything, I wish the character roster was bigger (with the cut racers), and I suppose the game has a notorious difficulty spike. But either way, nothing beats picking up the Wii wheel and having some good old racing. I’d say it’s my favourite Mario game of all time.
This game is the single reason I became such a a big Nintendo fan. After playing this I went out and got Mario Galaxy and boy that was it I was hooked. Awesome video dude!
I still have my Wii and original copy of Mario Kart to this day, and it continuously pulls a lot of cries of joy and screams of panic from my friends and I whenever we race each other on split screen. The characters and tracks never get boring, and we're always finding new challenges to do just because we think they're funny - the most recent being all of us using Cheep Charger. I'm forever thankful that I grew up on both this and Mario Kart DS, which I absolutely adore due to their difficult yet fair CPU coding. I didn't know it at the time when we got our Nintendo Wii for Christmas, but my dad informed me that they were selling so fast that the one he purchased was hidden in the back of a GameStop, likely stashed by one of the employees for themselves and given to my father by their oblivious coworker. Funny to think that some dumb luck brought me one of my favorite games and consoles of all time.
i grew up in the perfect era for when video games were becomming the next big thing. I'm a sophomore in college and I can vividly remember when I got my first Wii and the mariokart wii box from my grandpa probably a decade ago. I love this game a lot, and despite playing battles a handful of times, I still was able to remember those waluigi stadium and the soundtracks; dont get me started on the soundtracks. Amazing video to go back to memory lane and relive the feeling of playing mario kart wii the first time.
What an awesome video!!! Thank you so much for this trip down memory lane. I've been waiting so long for someone to make a video about the importance and all the great details and strengths of Mario Kart Wii! Especially things like unlocking the individual karts and characters is something that I really missed in Mario Kart 8 - the Wii version realises this just perfectly. Thanks to your video in particular, I became aware once again of how many great tracks and how many beautiful pieces of music have been integrated into this game... simply awesome!
I used to play mario kart wii with my older brother all the time as a 9 year old, getting so engrossed with unlocking characters and watching youtube videos about super shortcuts and competing with each other. My brother passed away suddenly and tragically when i was 14 in 2016 and i became suicidal 2 months after, and was admitted to a psych ward for 2 weeks. During our recreational time, there was a Wii that everyone would agree to play mario kart together on, even having a pretend system of "the mario kart king" where the title would be passed on by those leaving to whoever was able to beat them. Playing this every day was a lovely break and really helped me find any joy in life again while dealing with my grief. It reminded me to enjoy the simple things in order to continue on. Its a very special game indeed. And i totally was the mario kart king during my time there.
Fantastic video! I’m so glad that this popped up on my recommendation. I was getting burnt out on all of the games that I’ve been playing recently and booted up Mario kart Wii and have been pretty much trying to unlock everything and it’s been such a blast from the past! Much love to this game
Mario Kart Wii was such a vibe as a kid. When you were done with your day in school and went to a friends home, turned on the Wii and then played on Maple Treeway, you got such an insane and happy mood. Those were the golden times
You should have mentioned the unique drift mechanics of inside and outside drift and how they affected gameplay. With inside drift, you can turn sharper but with outside drift you can store a bigger mini turbo after the drift.
This game has my absolute favorite driving physics in this series. Simply driving around feels just right, even on the easier tracks. Whenever I play 8DX the driving just isn't as satisfying.
I remember when my cousins got the game when it came out. I remember long nights, my hours, and lots of fun. If the wii could track hours played on this game, I think it would be close to 3500 hours that I've played.
As a 99‘ kid, I grew up with Mario Kart DS, but MK Wii was my favorite game of them all. From the multiplayer mode to the ultra shortcuts, it was just so much fun.
I remember glitching through coconut mall and being able to explore parts of the map that are blocked off. Honestly one of my favorite MKWii memories to this day

I think 8 deluxe is the better game; just because of how much content and characters there are. But Mario kart Wii is BY FARRRR the most fun game to me. You can play online for free (or like $10 if you don’t have stuff) and playing this game with friends is by far the most fun experience I’ve had on any Nintendo console
I'd personally argue a better game is the more fun one! If it was just a personal opinion only that Mario Kart Wii is better, I'd agree with you it's not the best. But it's pretty much highly regarded as the best version of the game by everyone whose even played it. Even those without extreme nostalgia for it. I mean, who cares if the game has more content and characters if it's simply more fun to play with half the characters and tracks in a different game.
Great vid. Thought i feel like you forgot to mention the huge modding community of MKWii. Yes wimmfi is part of that but there is so much more. Starting with CTGP. A collection of hundreds of custom tracks from the community. It launched in 2011 over 13 years ago and still gets updated every few months with new tracks or updated to existing tracks. It also introduced 200cc to MKWii in 2019. This is only one mod for it but there are so so many more!
The skill/luck balance is the best in the series. There were multiple times I got blue shelled 2-4 times and still won, because you didn’t just get hammered 3 times in a row when getting hit like Mario Kart 8.
Used to play it online everyday before school, the battle mode was so fun, and yeah seeing where people were from too! makes me miss the Wii as a whole
I like the tc because it is pretty balanced. You gain a mushroom boost for a certain time which allows you to take some shortcuts while also shocking you if you don’t pass it off in time.
As a comp player, no they are not. I agree they would be balanced if it didnt automatically activate when you pulled it from the item box though. Most comp players just absolutely hate the TC and wish it did not exist
I grew up on this mario kart it might be my favorite. I completely forgot about the storm cloud item, and I wouldn't be mad if it came back as an item for a battle mode.
yeap i cant stop going back to this game i love the players custom track mods like Retro Rewind you can play online on you Wii/vWii/ PC Dolphin Emulator free love this game, now i play Mario Kart Wii with my subscribers and its super fun i love every momment of it
I remember being apart of a community when I was 13 that would just find those ultra shortcuts. I was there when they found the grumble volcano glitch and uploaded it to MKWii forum. I was in the top world record for like a day before everyone figured it out. Same with the rainbow road glitch. Miss those times!
Back then, I sometimes used to just abandon the race and drive around looking for narrow and harder paths on a map. Driving back and forth against the current, finding short cuts I didn't know existed. I loved to drive ontop of tall bridges, trying to be very careful with the joystick, even though it wasn't necessary. Only because it looked cool.. and that I just found big value in silly things like that. That was one of these things I didn't realize how much I would miss so much later on in the franchise. Bruh, it took me so many years playing Deluxe to realize that auto-steering could be turned off (It wasn't by default on the Wii?), but I was so glad it could! Because it made the whole driving experience and courses feel less restricted and simple. Although, the maps still feel more like roads with invincible fences than full-on environments.
damn, this is the second video i watched from you now and i love this kind of content already! keep it up, you have my sub! btw, if you have done the gameplay on actual hardware, what adapter/capture card did you use? it looks so good!
I think the video is missing the point on what makes it a great playing experience, and for me it's the game mechanics. Game mechanics are so complex in that game that the leaning curve is steep and goes far. But the rewards are incredible, chaining wheelies, slip drifts, low jumps, delayed tricks, there is soooo much tech. It makes the game experience complex, and it stays interesting even for really experienced gamers. While MK8 is more "arcade", and less tech based. Another aspect is the amount of positive feedback in this game, which allows to really break away, while on MK8 randomness had a bigger place. This is evident in falling out of map time, wall bumping, the coin, item selection, etc etc...
My main issue with MK Wii is the lack of I-Frames after you get with an item, along with the fact that there are WAY TOO many items. Other gripes I have with MK Wii is mostly due to the QoL updates that MK8 added, such as Latiku saving you SECONDS after you fall off the course, the increased focus on skillful driving (as opposed GRAB ALL THE ITEMS), and the fact that item boxes respawn almost instantly. I also find the MK8 version of the Wii Rainbow Road to be easier, as for the Mega Mushroom not being back since Wii…that’s probably due to balancing issues
I’ve heard ideas about having the thunder cloud make you grow and have a mega mushroom effect, rather than shrinking you. This way, the item is useful and you’ll try your best not to bump into anyone.
my family was always too broke to get new games and consoles so we bought a second hand WII and a few second hand games. I have 3 siblings so being able to play with ALL of us was the best. I have so many fond memories of playing with my siblings and Mario cart was a big part of that.
I was really bummed out when i found out that mario kart for the switch had everything unlocked already. It's probably the main reason i almost haven't played it
The mega shroom needs to come back, I actually liked the pow as it brought strategy like on SNES Mario circuit 3 you have to slow down to not fly in the dirt
I would love to see you do a retrospective of the sonic video games franchise and the Lego games and resident evil Video games series and call of duty games
i have a friend who's like next level of living under a rock and when i found out she'd never played a video game on a console before my immediate reaction was "wait does that mean you've never played mario kart????" and then i invited her over to play mario kart with me. i have mario kart 8 on the switch but i had her play wii because it's better. needless to say she had a great time
Hey! Love your videos! Buuuuuuut I watched this video with my stereo for audio... Consider filtering out low hums in your vocal track! My subwoofers were having a good time 😂
Reasons why MKWii is "Genius": 1. You need an internet guide to unlock some characters. 2. "Iconic" (not nostalgia, I swear) courses. 3. Ultra shortcuts that 90% of players never use. 4. Items that didn't return in future games ("star ripoff," "not super cool" thundercloud, "indifferent" pow block) 5. "Bare-mininum" battle mode ("nobody plays battle mode anyway"). 6. MKWii hacked lobbies. 7. You have to mess with your internet settings to play online again. Thank you for your insight, fine sir.
@@thecinedrone You're right. I have been blue shelled many times playing this game. In fact, I've been blue shelled enough times to get a gold star on every cup, every CC, unlock every staff ghost, and every character. And even done it 3 times now. But as much as I like playing this game, calling it genius is simply hyperbole.
One day, my dad had work off and decided to visit me. He brought over a copy of MKWii from his girlfriend's house and we played it on my Wii. I was hooked, it was a little teaser for what I'd be getting for christmas. Everytime it was my dad's weekend, we'd always stay up playing Mario Kart Wii. My dad & I spent a lot of time with outdoor activities, especially hiking, but the weather was pretty rough that winter so we stayed indoors. Lucky for us, Mario Kart Wii existed. I still remember the cold grey snowy atmosphere outside, and the warm inside with the two of us trying to find all the shortcuts. Funny enough, the Wii is when child-me really started understanding foreign concepts. I was a Godzilla fan in 2nd grade, and I watched a lot of the movies, yet somehow just didn't understand they were filmed in Japan & not the US. The Wii is when I started to realize the difference, especially with Mii-centric games like Wii Sports resort. Well looking back on it, Coconut Mall reminds me heavily of the Aeon Mall Rycom in Okinawa Japan. I remember when I first got sent to Okinawa, my first time in the mall, I took a bunch of photos then called my dad .
One thing i dont see touched on enough is the fact that the standards for getting 3 Stars in Mario Kart Wii were alot higher than they are now. In Mario Kart 8 you can just win every race and get 3 stars but in Wii you couldn't die or go off road too much and if you did you had to make it up by getting other characters with items like bananas and green shells.
4:08 I do really wish they made the text of MKW the same font as mkds, I've used it as a custom texture and it works soooooo well i love it and genuinely think the game would've gained a larger fanbase
One thing that I didn’t like about battle mode was how much empty space that some of the courses had, like I liked the concept of each track, but there just felt like there was too much space between stunts/boxes.
As a kid i never really liked this game because i mostly played 7 ALOT LIKE ALOT but getting back to it after 9 years makes me realized how good this games rooster tracks remakes and new entry mechanics are it's impressing that almost after 16 years this games still suprises me

Mario Kart 08' Will Always Be One Of My Favorite Racing Games. My Cousin & I Still Race Each Other To This Day lol. 🏎
i've played mario kart wii for around 4 1/2 hours today and then i proceeded to watch this video and now want to play it even more lmao
Please lets also not forget the AMAZING music of all the tracks and also for the menu's
Not me wanting vampire waluigi as a playable character in the next home console Mario kart game 😅
16:54 whenever I boot up Mario Kart Wii I only ever play battle mode lol.
I grew up on this mario kart it might be my favorite. I completely forgot about the storm cloud item, and I wouldn't be mad if it came back as an item for a battle mode.
I love your videos on Nintendo games man, they're like comfort food to me.
Btw Yoshi falls is under rated
yeap i cant stop going back to this game i love the players custom track mods like Retro Rewind you can play online on you Wii/vWii/ PC Dolphin Emulator free love this game, now i play Mario Kart Wii with my subscribers and its super fun i love every momment of it
I remember being apart of a community when I was 13 that would just find those ultra shortcuts.
Mario Kart Wii will always have a special place in my heart🫶🏻 Thank you for being a part of my childhood :3
I agree Mk8 is the better game....but MK Wii is more fun. Somehow...
I’ve heard ideas about having the thunder cloud make you grow and have a mega mushroom effect, rather than shrinking you. This way, the item is useful and you’ll try your best not to bump into anyone.
I absolutely love this game with my very being ❤
You are so underrated and I’m waiting for the day I can say I was part of the first 30k of an over 500k channel
Great video! Make me want to go back and play the game again
I teared up when you went into the game from the Wii home screen
my family was always too broke to get new games and consoles so we bought a second hand WII and a few second hand games.
Those were the days man!
17:50 that was me I was the kid with shity WiFi playing at midnight hoping my mom doesn’t hear.
Mk Wii was truly special. Mk 8 and 8 deluxe almost feel like a different franchise but Mk Wii felt like a natural progression from double dash
I never actually had a Wii, but sheesh I want one now XD
I would love to see you do a retrospective of the sonic video games franchise and the Lego games and resident evil Video games series and call of duty games
another mariomikester review letsgoooo
i have a friend who's like next level of living under a rock and when i found out she'd never played a video game on a console before my immediate reaction was "wait does that mean you've never played mario kart????" and then i invited her over to play mario kart with me. i have mario kart 8 on the switch but i had her play wii because it's better. needless to say she had a great time
Hey! Love your videos! Buuuuuuut I watched this video with my stereo for audio... Consider filtering out low hums in your vocal track! My subwoofers were having a good time 😂
Reasons why MKWii is "Genius":
1. You need an internet guide to unlock some characters.
2. "Iconic" (not nostalgia, I swear) courses.
3. Ultra shortcuts that 90% of players never use.
4. Items that didn't return in future games ("star ripoff," "not super cool" thundercloud, "indifferent" pow block)
5. "Bare-mininum" battle mode ("nobody plays battle mode anyway").
6. MKWii hacked lobbies.
7. You have to mess with your internet settings to play online again.
Thank you for your insight, fine sir.
looks like someone got blue shelled just before the finish line
@@thecinedrone You're right. I have been blue shelled many times playing this game. In fact, I've been blue shelled enough times to get a gold star on every cup, every CC, unlock every staff ghost, and every character. And even done it 3 times now. But as much as I like playing this game, calling it genius is simply hyperbole.
ironically a good chunk of these points are perfectly valid.
Honorable mention to MarioKart DS version.
0:43 double dash, you literally just described double dash
Easily the GOAT of all Mario Karts.
Everybody without we get retro rewind so you can play online on pc
nice video bro
One thing i dont see touched on enough is the fact that the standards for getting 3 Stars in Mario Kart Wii were alot higher than they are now. In Mario Kart 8 you can just win every race and get 3 stars
but in Wii you couldn't die or go off road too much and if you did you had to make it up by getting other characters with items like bananas and green shells.
Mario Kart Wii will always be loved!
4:08 I do really wish they made the text of MKW the same font as mkds, I've used it as a custom texture and it works soooooo well i love it and genuinely think the game would've gained a larger fanbase
You had to make a video, not make me cry…
Proud of myself for having a star rating on every grand prix in this game
One thing that I didn’t like about battle mode was how much empty space that some of the courses had, like I liked the concept of each track, but there just felt like there was too much space between stunts/boxes.
As a kid i never really liked this game because i mostly played 7 ALOT LIKE ALOT but getting back to it after 9 years makes me realized how good this games rooster tracks remakes and new entry mechanics are it's impressing that almost after 16 years this games still suprises me
