Adding to Kanami’s accomplishments is teaching Miku how to play guitar.
I seem to remember Kanami telling in an interview that she negotiated a deal with her father who didn't want her to be a musician. The deal was that she would graduate with a degree and then decide which path she would take. Her father speculated that she had lost interest in a career as a musician by then, but that wasn't the case and so father Tono had to grudgingly accept her decision to become a musician.
I doubt he was that begrudged, as he continued to pay for Kanami to take guitar and singing lessons while she was in college.
@@greylocke100Yeah, agreed. I think her parents were nervous about music but they wanted her to have a degree she could fall back on in case music didn't work out. She was pursuing music all through her university years I believe. I do remember she did have a conversation with her parents in which she agreed to get her University degree but she asked to be allowed to freely pursue music after. According to Akane, Kanami was also an excellent academic student.
Q: Really? That means you went to voice training not because you liked singing, but because if you had to sing, you wanted to do it properly...and?
Kanami: That’s right. At any rate, I thought that it wasn’t good to have low singing ability. At that time, I wanted to at least become a professional musician. I had gone to a regular university because my parents wanted me to go. I really wanted to enroll at a vocational school like Akane and Misa, with the intention of becoming a professional musician. So, I asked my parents, “When I finish university, please allow me to pursue my own interests.” I guess, perhaps, my parents were seeing if the 4 years of university would lead me to give up the music path. So conversely, I thought that I had to do extra well to show that I was serious. I studied economics and management at university, so I was able to learn how to market and promote myself as a singer/songwriter. After that, I had to go to voice training to strengthen my singing skills, build a soundproof room in my home, and… other various training methods.

If I recall right..the clip at the end was from a concert on Kanami's Birthday during the US tour..And when asked what she wanted..she said a hug from Saiki.🥰.
Kanami Tōno is a musician who stands out quite a lot without really going for it. At least that's how I saw her from the beginning in the first few videos I watched the same night after I stumbled across 'Thrill'. Yes, she has her (short) solos, but for a guitarist in a rock band she's actually remarkably inconspicuous imo. And yet, if you listen carefully, you can actually always hear her. The level of detail she puts into every song and plays herself is something I haven't heard before to this extent, or at least not for a very long time. Apart from the fact that I generally found her more and more interesting with every scrap of information I learned about her, it's just like the gentlemen said in the video. Without using words, she speaks volumes to me. And I just love listening to her. 😌

A commenter on someone's reaction (I wish I could remember who) referred to her as "The Six String Samurai" That is such a fitting epithet.

Hey, I'm really enjoying your journey of discovery through their music and the Orehnje documentaries. Kanami is probably my favorite member of Band Maid, the creative genius who seems clueless but hides a fierce determination and an enormous capacity for work... at the service of the band and its music. A wonderfully generous human being. Thank you!
Yes. She's not clueless at all. That's mostly just fun, like much of what they do with their stage personas. When you read the more serious interviews, you get a different view of her. And you'll also hear the other members mention how brilliant and impressive she is. You can also get a glimpse when she's off stage.
Kanami is also quickly approaching fluency in English. If you watch the overseas live shows carefully, she's often translating and feeding Misa and Akane, and sometimes Saiki lines in English.
Kanami is the golden goose of this band that just keeps dropping these golden eggsongs. The amount of original music that flows out of her head is remarkable. There's a fun vid floating on the Internet that shows the band many years ago at "band camp" - a live-in studio the group rented to hang out and rehearse. Miku did a vid log there that showed the members napping and cooking, except for Kanami - who was huddled alone in the studio with her DAW writing music for the band. Kanami's uniqueness within the band doesn't stop there tho: she's also been Miku's guitar teacher. Kanami in fact wrote a song just to assist Miku's guitar progression - an instrumental called Don't Be Long (iirc).
I just love rewatching these documentaries with new reactors! She is such an inspiration! (And sooo adorable!)
If someone said to me 20 years ago I would have a crush on a japanese guitarist dressed as a maid, I would have laughed so hard.

I love these documentaries, really cements them in our hearts and minds.
Another story where persistence has paid off. However as others have mentioned, you need something else and Kanami's break came with Miku.
Such a heart warming story the never giving up, due to lack of success. As you say she is an influence now to girls not just in Japan but worldwide.

I forget what you call them, but you would put them on a thing that spins and drop a sharp, needly dealy on the vinyl thing and WHAMMO...MUSIC! Anyway, "Frenchman's Flat" was always a fav. PRS does have an affordable entry level guitar. The SE (student edition) is easier on the budget and has the same high quality as the rest of their lineup. I have one, it's fantastic.

Kanami Mincho Kanamincho!!!!! "Opeth" are a band I was introduced to by a friend who knew I loved "Jethro Tull" he played me one of their later songs (I believe) that sounded like it came from a Tull album (different vocals obviously).
The two versions of Sayanakidori are about as different as can be. I love both versions, you are in for a treat.

So much nostalgia from watching these docs. Reminds me when i discovered Thrill freshly released here on youtube in 2014. I wanted to hear more music from them so badly. Along came songs like Real Existence, Don't Let Me Down, Alone, Non-fiction Days and then by the song YOLO I knew these girls were no joke and just getting better and better. Their talent and creativity at this point seems endless and I'm all here for it.
The photo of the ladies you like as mentioned is from the "Real Exsitence" MV...I have personally stood there.....I visited the temple on both my trips to Japan to see the MAID's...I held up my mobile and watched the MV. It was like having a personal performance...hehe.
I have also visited the quarry from the "Influencer" MV..and all the places Miku runs through during what I call her "anime run"...from the "Don't Let Me Down " MV.
I have also been to Miku's home town, Kumamoto, and visited the Swiss Cake shop they go to in the video where the ladies visited Miku's home town...And had a bubble tea from the stand the MAID's get theirs from..The lovely young lady who served me drew the sanrio character "Keroppi"on my cup!..Which is a frog!...My late partner called me WeeFrog..How coincidental!

Kanami surpassed John Frusciante as my favorite guitarist a couple years ago. I dont think she will(or has enough selfishness in her) to have the same selfish spiral out of control into self indulgence and exparamental solo albums like he did. But if she does I'll be here jamming out to that too lol

Get yourself an electric piano and start learning how to play. Excellent student models are available for about $500. UA-cam has thousands of hours of instructional content. If you use headphones, nobody will hear how bad you are.
It’s clear that you have many more BAND-MAID videos and songs to catch up on. The photo you like so much is from the making of the Real Existence OMV, which was shot at the Emperor’s shrine, near Harajuku.
Piano is actually the easiest instrument for adult beginners.
Sadly your timing doing these is unfortunate. You might notice that Saiki’s video is a lot longer than this. It’s also longer than it used to be. He’s adding content to each video and has only uploaded Saiki’s revised one so far. I can’t wait to see what’s added to the rest of them.
