Plenty of actors and actresses are not attracted to each other. It is "work." I always thought Duckie got gypped. One of my favorite movies. I loved Duckie.

I get it, but it would have given hope to the awkward guys of the 80's who never got the girl if they had gone with the original ending.

As a girl and growing up in the late 90s and 00s while being the awkward genderbent version of Duckie, yeah I totally agree with you there. There's a reason so many fawn over Duckie today and not... what was the other guys name?

@ingridnorman7919 lol the other guys name was blaine. Apparently test audiences wanted andi w/ blaine. The ending was up to interpretation she & ducky had the final dance. Molly hated the ending & said she was very sick. So she didn't sell it. Some kind of wonderful was the same writers & director trying to wrong this film having such a satisfying ending. This was a triangle where the lead guy came from a middle class family not one of the wealthy kids. The girl he's crushing on Amanda is also middle class but b/c shes perceived as only beautiful her rich bf creep & her snob friends don't want her w/ Keith. He has a bff in watts who is not part of the rich crowd. He winds up w/ watts Amanda turns out to be an amazing girl who wants Keith to be happy she wants to get away from the wealthy kids & stand on her own. It's so underrated but a better movie. A great ending. Although Keith blowing all his savings on diamond earrings he gives Amanda which she takes off for him to give watts. His dad is sadly made sorta a villain b/c he wants his sons hard work as a mechanic through hs to go to college & only wants better for him. To do something better for his life than be blue collar. Keith is also a great artist. I get Keith is sick of his dad pushing him to go to college & wants his life to be his but blowing ur savings & college money to buy diamond earrings wasn't necessary. Watts only wanted him not some earrings. She also defended his dad saying how he's lucky he has someone looking out for him. Still it was a much better ending where all 3 wind up happy away from the " cool rich crowd"

I think a good plot twist would’ve been that she ends up with Andrew Dice Clay.

If they actually stuck with the original ending, it still would’ve been a classic. Rather if it would’ve been a classic for 30 plus years or if it would’ve been considered a classic now after so long, it still would’ve been a great classic because all those teen girls who saw the original ending during the screen test, they would’ve thought after a few decades that it actually is a good ending because it’s much more realistic and would’ve had the feel of a K-drama. If this was made today, it probably would end the way it was originally supposed to end just like how “Fatal Attraction” would’ve originally ended.

Yeah Hell Duckie really did do fine! More beautiful woman! And Jon Cryer also did really well for himself!

John Hughes did Anthony Michael Hall and Jon Cryer wrong in the 80s. Hall was only guy without a girl in Breakfast Club and Cryer got cruelly friendzoned in this one.

But he ended up with Buffy the Vampire Slayer…. Duckie won in the end…. We just didn’t realize it.

@@rocktechinc lol true enough. And he got the girl in Hiding Out. But being as she was barely 18 and he was supposed to be in his 30s that might not be a good example.

Well to be fair, Anthony Michael Hall does get the beautiful senior girl in “Sixteen Candles” so there’s that

Guess Molly wasnt a good enough actor to be able to act like she was attracted to someone.

Even the audience wanted her to be with Andrew. No matter who wanted to be with whom, in the end, we got what we wanted.

Steph should've ended up with her! 😂
Aye JK; my vote : Take #1 Duckie & take #2 Blane. Original ending would've done fine too 👍🏼

So if rdj played duckie molly would have sold it ? Thats bad acting. She obviously was attracted to andrew & wanted her character to wind up w/ the cute guy who treated her like crap & his dumb rich ftirnds. I always hated the ending. It was so unearned. Plus blaine & andi had like one date. Spaders character called him.out how his mom woupd never go for it. Hs senior movies annoy me b/c where do these bullies & brats wind up ? The same place in life. Blaine probably got sent to an ive league school & andi w/ zero money prob went to a community college or worked as a seamstress. Like im.sure blaine was giving up the family fortune & future to work.at a car wash & hang w/ andi. I hated this dumb ending. This is why mollys career crashed & burned by 89. John hughes had this teenager ss his muse . She wanted to always end up w/ the hot alpha male or cute guy she liked. I think she tanked the last dance b/c she was miffed they cast jon cryer who yes was dorky. In the breakfsst club she was fine being w/ the loser pot head b/c the actor was better thsn the short emilio esrevez & amh was another dorky kid w/ braces. In q6 candles she got the hot guy again. Never let a brat teen dictate casting & scripts. The only good part of this movie was the omd song & spader walking around w/ the great one liners. What a depressng stupid ending. Again molly flamed out badly after so much hype in the 80s as the next big thing. Sorry that rdj was the hot guy & his career went out of control after iron man but they cast cryer. Plus they were only gonna wind up buddies anyway. Plus her dress was hideous & her character was unlikeable.

For me, the lesson of this story is different; it's about the sexism of the audience. They wouldn't buy a girl choosing friendship over romance, but in the gender-swapped remake, Some Kind Of Wonderful, the audience would accept it. If the original ending had been retained, I don't think it would necessarily have meant her forsaking her true love, nor would the long term result necessarily have been for her to stay romantically with Duckie.
Imagine a thought experiment: a gender-swapped remake of Who's Got Mail. (I know that You've Got Mail is already a remake of The Shop Around the Corner, which itself is a remake of the Hungarian play Parfumerie; that's not the point here.) In our remake, HER mega-business crushes HIS little shop that is his life's work, but we're supposed to accept it as a happy ending because they find true love together. That movie would never get made because the audience would not accept that ending; the soul-crushing destruction of his work would outweigh romance.

True enough. And gender swap Forrest Gump and tell me that would still be a beloved movie. Cracked UA-cam channel had a very interesting video about gender swapping classic movies and how the movie wouldn’t be accepted by audiences.
