I put an eye bolt through a lacrosse ball and use it to practice. It weighs about 6 ounces and has similar wind resistance to a mullet head. It helps me practice pendulum and lay down casts.

The biggest tip that helped me is safety while casting. You don't realize how much power you can generate leveraging a 10+ foot rod with a 3+ oz weight. Especially on 30 pd or more braid. It can easily shred through your hand and fingers much like a bandsaw and send you to the ER requiring stitches.. personally I use a glove on my dominant hand, but their are other solutions out there as well.
Great video, just a suggestion, when you are on a fish, as you are reeling, slowly make your way towards the water so you don't have to drag the fish over 50 feet of sandy beach. Particularly for a non keeper fish, you want to minimize sand exposure to maximize their chance of living.
I started watching your videos for tips a few months ago. The next best thing to "being there, actually fishing," is learning from serious anglers who share their knowledge. On my surf-casts, I gently bounce my line twice, and on the third and biggest bounce, I take two steps forward and then swing out. I generally cast further than anybody I see on the beach, and yeah, I get away with 25lb braid catching 3 lb Dungess with 3 oz of weight plus 2 ounces of bait. Super fun! Thanks! hooked up 5 nice Dungeness last weekend in Tomales Bay, CA. Can't wait to go back.
Another thing to note is holding the rod in the right orientation. There are two spine on a rod, the soft and the hard spine. the hard spine runs on the bottom side of the rod, for a spinning rod the same side as the reel. This spine is more stiff and is what allows for the hook setting power, but also it remains stiff when casting and has a stronger spring reaction than the soft spine. Turning your rod even just a few degrees, something done by just loosening your wrist and letting it flex, can greatly affect both accuracy and distance. My advice is to make sure you hold the rod with the guides straight up or straight down, depending on rod(casting or spinning). Hold that wrist strong when making hard casts.
I have always been reluctant to comment because you catch a lot of fish and I don't mean to criticise. Everyone has his own style. Here in Europe we do a lot of Surfcasting and it's different at the mediterranean from the Atlantic. But if you have a look at the way they surf cast in the UK you'd be surprised with the solutions that they've come up with... Tackle wise and on how to cast. I see people mentioned pendulum casting which works great with multiplier reels but these days they developed great rods for fixed spool reels that will launch your bait to the horizon with a symple "off-the-ground" cast. We also let the lead hang lower when casting, more or less near the first eye of the rod and the reel is pointed upwards more, then giving it a good swing (let the blank do it's work) pointing the rod upwards. Great examples TA Fishing, Sandmans Tackle, Danny Moeskop...
let out more line when you cast. Start with the lead on the ground and fully load the rod then use the same method you are using. Once you have that down you can move to a pendulum where you are swinging the lead to load the rod instead of working it off the ground. Also, a clipped down rig will throw farther still as you get a more streamlined bait.
Im a fan of hey skippers. Been subs to it for the past 4yrs+ , ive learn alot regarding the old vid of lure methods, rigs & also the bait. But im gonna advice afew regarding surf casting. First thing choose braided line (30lbs - 50lbs) for your reel . Always always use shock leader (always higher Lbs then your main line. 40lbs - 60lbs) . You also need to use a heavy sinker in order to cast all the weight & line out ( Recommended Size 3 to 5 sinker ). Stronger wave = Heavier Sinker. Always cast out your line at at 45° angle . It will help you push the reel line further & smoother. I hope this help you guys out. Ive been surf casting for over 9yrs. Cheers ♥️👍🏼
I forgot to mention, surf casting rod recommended are from 10ft to 15ft. 2 piece rod has better back bone power compare to 3/4 piece rod. And also for reel size i will recomment size 5000 up to 10000 depanding on how far you can cast & how deep is the water your fishing at. Hope this helps. Cheers ♥️👍🏼
Pick a spot 45 degrees above the water to cast at and add power only at the end of your cast. Look into a Breakaway cannon, it will save your finger and allow for more power on the cast. They also make rigs that clip the bait to the lead and prevent the helicoptering that happens. Lastly please use a shock leader for power casting.
i just use archery gloves. do i still need breakaway cannon to increase casting distance? i'm already doing 200 yards without doing pendulum casting. I'm using 12ft surf rod 20lb braided line with 40lb shock leader 4.3oz bullet sinker. i hope ur still alive.
Use clip down rigs, learn how to pendulum cast and don't go under 12ft for the rod length its a standard beach casting in UK/Europe 140-200yd casts are common. If you have difficulty doing it then you haven't done it enough.
Over here in socal. We use long rods to cast lures called surface irons. Let the rod load up and the graphite in the rip to shoot the lure out. Good rods are calstars, phenix, shimano teramars
Always enjoy watching you guys fish. Especially in the Chesapeake.. Spent a few years doing environmental work stationed in Grasonville near the Kent Narrows. Loved it there. Your dad's T style dropper loop really helped me out last week. Thanks Dad. John Holden's Easy Cast video helped me get respectable distances reliably . It is about "loading" the rod early in the cast and keeping the reel hand high after release.
It seems strong that in USA the men only have small rods. In Europe people only speak of a surf rod if he has more than 13 feet otherwise you have a spinning rod. I always use my 16.48 feet (5 meter) rods. Only as a tip, if you want to do surf cast, you cannot do your lead 1.5 feet under the tip of your rod to throw in, leave the length of your line to the bottom eye to throw in. This way De Lijn conveys more power to your throw. For the rest it is a nice contribution again. Thx Friend
The 'pendulum cast' or 'off the ground' cast will get better results, but one thing to be aware of is the need for a shock leader to take the strain of the cast. The general rule is 10lb of shock leader of every 1oz of weight. So if using a 6oz sinker, you will need at least 60lb shock leader. I always add another 10ib to the leader (70lb) to take into account the weight of the bait. Also the shock leader needs to be long enough to go from the sinker up and through the rings and have at least 6 turns around the spool of the reel. Not using a shock leader will result in 'crack offs' and the sinker flying through the air losing you the sinker and rig but also is a hazard to other people on the beach.
Yes, I also use the Pendulum, I use a 14ft Assasin Sea rod with a Daiwa Grand Wave. I can get it on average about 110m / 330ft. 5 - 6oz weight. I find the pendulum helps to cast really straight when I'm casting between other fishermen. We also call blue fish SHAD in South Africa.
I have been using a hangmans noose for everything. I taught myself to tie it to anything even with an eyelet. Perfect for hooks. It is fast and easy use 4 wraps never had one come undone.
This channel inspired me to fish on the beach. Love this vid!! Some tricks that I use is to have a smaller line diameter and to use more aerodynamic lures.
Just watching your latest vid. I live in the UK 🇬🇧 and looking at your casting on the longer rods, you would probably benefit from "the pendulum cast ". Its used alot over here especially using heavy weights in strong current. Have a look up on UA-cam for beach casting in the UK. Keep up the good work 👏 👍 tight lines bud.
It's not always about the rod length. In Australia we have the Alvey Sidecaster Reels (with matched rod) which are very good at casting long distances (around 200 metres), and especially good at casting light baits with heavy line. I also choose the smallest diameter line for a given breaking strain which adds considerably more distance to your cast. If the spool, no matter which reel type used, is fully spooled to capacity then you'll get maximum distance. Low line spools really lowers your distance due to friction of the line against the spool lip.
Great video, guys! Please use this sound 1:43 liberally to denote excellent casting distance or when an idea goes over your head or to signify very light traffic on your commute into work etc...
I've burnt the skin off my finger, casting my Penn500 and 501. Best I've found for me, is to use the tip of your thumb, to control the 'run off" speed of your line. Personally I feel your less likely to burn your thumb, when using the tip of your thumb... But hay, that works for me.. So far.
I'm thinking of making my mix inspired by yours, just a little different containing: Squid, sardines, shrimp and mussels, all kept in coarse salt. What do you think of this mix? Thanks.
Do you still sell your bait boxes with clamp, shrimp, and squid? Wanting to order in a few weeks. And how long does it take to be delivered? I'm in Georgia. Thanks.
I don't know where you are fishing, but we have a current right to left in Texas. Sometimes a pretty good current. We have to use the surf weights or the baits will just swing around and end up on the beach two hundred yards away.
I slightly disagree. Making your hip as the wedge has less concentrated energy then making the rode as the wedge. Stand firm and pull in you left hand under your right arm as you push your right hand out. Make the tip a whip . The more compact movement, the more concentrated and the stronger the force.
See I was thinking about how people use canons and drones but those are all cliche and overdone that's why I came up with the genius idea to make a trebuche
Im just back from a surf fishing vacation in virginia and North Carolina. It was so great.. i got a 27 inches red drum.. using a 10 feet rod. I live in a dense urban city 10 hours driving from the nearest beach.. but to get to my favourite beaches.. usually viriginia, north and South Carolina i have to drive down 800 miles atleast. So those who live near a beach are so dam lucky,, i even fished with the local at the dock .. those local fishermen , mostly old retired vets catching small croker every morning.. they make my day.. but i prefer surf fishing on the beach.. now about the video., there is one thing i have problem when i cast is the exact moment you need ro release the line.. the finger.. sometime i release the finger a little too late which end up in a fail.. releasing (opening) the finger has to be in sync with the swing. I also tend to release the finger too soon.. which end up casting pretty high in the sky.. As for the rod holders, i bought a couple of the white pvc rod holder because they are affordable.. the aluminum rod holder are so dam exepensive and they seem to scratch the rod.. and potentially scratch the car if youre not carefull . Another thing about surf fishing is sand.. sand can damage a fishing reel.. i lost a $125 reel once.. because i left the rod lay down on the beach.. while i was trying to unhook a fish.. that was 2 years ago.. last week during my vacation i was so exited when i got the 27 inches red drum that i did the same mistake. I put the rod on the beach to unhook and totally forgot about the sand.. luckily this time the sand did not get into the reel .. but during that week so many time sand got on the reel….l sand and reel management is such an art to skill.. next year vacation i will have to figure how to avoid gettijg sand on reel.. my new $250 saltist daiwa reel survived this year surf fishing trip.. csn't wait next year
Pendulum casting is what will get you the distance. It takes a lot of practice and your bait needs to be on the hook securely, you also need the right gloves as people have lost finger tips with the technique.
Your theory on the pull and push technique is correct how ever when you put its to practice you use too much of you body still the aim of the technique is to use the rod to its fullest potential with using the least amount of energy so twisting you body like that allows for an decrease is accuracy and you still not using the rod to its limits over the head is accuracy but you can get distance with the least amount of body movement aswell and the power cast across the shoulder only you torso moves from facing the rear to casting direction while looking up 45 degrees i can assure you practice this with a 4oz 6oz weight you should get atleast 170m (180 or so yrds) on a 13ft but master lighter weights first turning and twisting your body like that not good...but you have given good advice on some of the technique
Nice video, I just think that if you want to cast with 8 oz + bait, then the load must be about 1/3 of the length of the fishing rod. To balance the force and curve of the ellipse the lead flies. It is also necessary to release the line approx. 45° to 50° from the ground, so that the lead and bait together have the correct radius of the ellipse into the distance. With a 390 cm rod and 5 oz lead (of course in a good area near the water) you can cast approx. 110 m (360 ft). Eric
Another tip for casting further: what you do in this video is holding the reel at a quarter past 12 .. now turn the rod so the rod is exactly at 12 oçlock and for the rest use the same technique. in this way the line will fly easier .. also using wider eyes on the rod will help the line run with less friction. Nice video's .. nice personality.
A tip from english carp fishing, you want the lead at around where the rod connect's. This will help increase the speed of the lead which will help you cast longer :) also using a finger stall will help alot as it will allow you to put more power into the cast because you can't feel the line as much on your finger, hope this help's.
awesome video. always fun to be able to cast out far and wait for a fish in the surf to nail the bait. another good tip i like to share is wen you cast, point your rod to 10 o'clock. to allow the line to fly out like a rainbow and also reduces friction on the line against the guide. usually for long distance, i use a long spool reel like the shimano ultegra. would like to see u try using a longer surf rod haha that would b fun.
good video, love your tips and keys, thanks for sharing! We also put a lot keys in our vlogs for surf fishing, jetty fishing, bottum fishing, razor clamming, crabbing, boating ..... we like to hear from your comments too.
Fishing Virginia Beach and Hatteras most of my life I don't like the footstomp cast. I prefer planting my feet and whipping with my hips and shoulders for maximum cast. I do like the fact that you're showing these people to use the left hand pull down and right hand push. If you do not use the technique that I am suggesting please try and let us know how it worked for you.
I love watching your videos, please show what the fish looks like, what kind it is and the size you can keep. I am new to ocean fish and I am learning so much from you! Thank you so much!
That looks like a daiwa certate you're using. I'm so jelly. Been eyeing that reel for a while now thinking about jumping the gun and just buying it. But I really need to get myself a conventional reel and a 12 footer so I can really really launch it out there. Got my eyes on that Penn fathom II 30. Okay so I'm going to give some tips also regarding casting with a spinning reel and braid. For all you noobs who have never done surf casting with braid and spinning reel make sure you lock your drag down tight on your spinning reel I am not kidding lock it down tight otherwise the braid will slice your finger up like butter and it will ruin your fishing experience for the week.
You need some Teva Sandals. They will stay on your feet, can be water soaked and will not be slippery . I love watching you fish and when I get to go I will take your advice about salting the bait. Such a simple idea.
I like your videos. If it's long distance the person is looking to cast why are you showing them to cast from the parking lot instead of the water line? Would they not get an extra 20 yards of cast if they did this?
Have a look at;- How to cast, with a fishing rod,- on UA-cam videos! There are good casting styles shown which will be suitable to learn! We use/wear a belt rod "bucket" to put the rod's end butt in, which is more comfortable than without one when winding in! The line releaser, aka, bionic finger, is put on rod about opposite the spool! It's purpose is to avoid finger damage when releasing line in casting! Look at those on UA-cam too! With any size fish, use the rod, - pump or pull with rod, - short rod pulls with smaller fish! The reel is not a "grinding winch!" Catch a big'un! 🙂 🎣🐟🐠🐟🎣 🙂
Clip down your baits using a release system like "gemini splash down solo" or "breakaway IMP". Having a massive bait flapping around as it flies will reduce your casting distance, clipping it down keeps it behind the lead and improves aerodynamics leading to much further casts. Also casting off the ground gives you more "wind up time" in your cast to cast even further, this is only possible if you're on an open and empty beach like in the video here. Search "off the ground cast". If you're feeling "advanced" and have a good strong rod/reel/rig you can try a "pendulum cast" but make sure there's nobody else around in case your lead becomes detached and flies off and kills someone...
Daiwa makes a rly good surf rod for like $24.99 of something like that. I’ve got one and it’s held up great against everything from whiting to bull reds

Hold that wrist strong when making hard casts.

let out more line when you cast. Start with the lead on the ground and fully load the rod then use the same method you are using. Once you have that down you can move to a pendulum where you are swinging the lead to load the rod instead of working it off the ground. Also, a clipped down rig will throw farther still as you get a more streamlined bait.

Thanks bro... I just bought my 1st surf rod and still learn how to cast it far. Your video is very helpful.
I keep hearing good things about using a casting trigger to save your finger when heaving heavy sinkers
Especially with thin braid. Breakaway makes them
Pick a spot 45 degrees above the water to cast at and add power only at the end of your cast. Look into a Breakaway cannon, it will save your finger and allow for more power on the cast. They also make rigs that clip the bait to the lead and prevent the helicoptering that happens. Lastly please use a shock leader for power casting.
Totally agree with you here! Or even use breakaway rods. You will be amazed how light they are and how far they can cast 😊

I don't know where you are fishing, but we have a current right to left in Texas. Sometimes a pretty good current. We have to use the surf weights or the baits will just swing around and end up on the beach two hundred yards away.
Nice mate. My no 1 tip lighter the lone the further it goes.
great tips
I slightly disagree. Making your hip as the wedge has less concentrated energy then making the rode as the wedge. Stand firm and pull in you left hand under your right arm as you push your right hand out. Make the tip a whip . The more compact movement, the more concentrated and the stronger the force.
I thought about dropping a rig with a drone.
But drones aren't cheap!
You can use about 200 us drones to cast. Be sure to be over 40m alt or will lose gps signal and crash.
See I was thinking about how people use canons and drones but those are all cliche and overdone that's why I came up with the genius idea to make a trebuche
We use sharkan drones in south africa built for drone fishing ... we use it to drop big baits for sharks
@@alejandrogarcia9612 you nailed it!
Doesn't anyone use a sail rig anymore or a kite
May I know when is best timing to release the index finger which U R holding onto the braid while casting?
Come down to Onlsow county and do some LBSF
I put the rod on the beach to unhook and totally forgot about the sand.. luckily this time the sand did not get into the reel .. but during that week so many time sand got on the reel….l sand and reel management is such an art to skill.. next year vacation i will have to figure how to avoid gettijg sand on reel.. my new $250 saltist daiwa reel survived this year surf fishing trip.. csn't wait next year
It is indeed a awesome one !!! Nice Content!!!
Hey im starting to surf fish now after 10 years retirement from fishing n now back into the game, you think im ready? I been catch small fish only
I wish that you would show in your videos where your baits land in the surf so I would know to cast my rigs to
Looked so good even your night time footage is very well done spot on
Hi bro your casting is getting better. The only thing you still need to do is bring your left arm in closer and more tucked in when you begin it in.
"Boom Shaka Lacka".... Awesome!
Pendulum casting is what will get you the distance. It takes a lot of practice and your bait needs to be on the hook securely, you also need the right gloves as people have lost finger tips with the technique.
Lost fingertips?! 😳
Another beautiful fishing, congratulations, your fishing equipment is very good, this place is incredible, it has big fish.
Hug and good fishing!👍🎣😉
Braid casts like bewww weewwwweee lol love the sound effects bro.
Thanks Skipper, will try this technique with my new 12’ surf rod and 4 ounce pyramid using 25lb braid tonight in Huntington Beach, CA
Good luck my friend
Nice video, I just think that if you want to cast with 8 oz + bait, then the load must be about 1/3 of the length of the fishing rod. To balance the force and curve of the ellipse the lead flies. It is also necessary to release the line approx. 45° to 50° from the ground, so that the lead and bait together have the correct radius of the ellipse into the distance. With a 390 cm rod and 5 oz lead (of course in a good area near the water) you can cast approx. 110 m (360 ft). Eric
8oz sinker??? Madness like casting a small fridge
First vid I watched from your channel. Great vid! Awesome camp site and amazing tips. Thx!
A tip from english carp fishing, you want the lead at around where the rod connect's. This will help increase the speed of the lead which will help you cast longer :) also using a finger stall will help alot as it will allow you to put more power into the cast because you can't feel the line as much on your finger, hope this help's.
I am heading to Nags Head this weekend. Maybe I will see you around.
if you don't require finger protection with a spinning reel, you're not casting hard enough.
Oh god no finger protection is cringe. Braid cuts you deeep
Truth...many cut index fingers
Fact.
I use a Breakaway Cannon.
Never gets left at home.
Casts consistently.
Thats because you have soft baby fingers.
@@FullmoonEffects89 your mom & sister weren't complaining 😉
Have you considered using shock leader along with your braid to help keep it together?
awesome video. always fun to be able to cast out far and wait for a fish in the surf to nail the bait. another good tip i like to share is wen you cast, point your rod to 10 o'clock. to allow the line to fly out like a rainbow and also reduces friction on the line against the guide. usually for long distance, i use a long spool reel like the shimano ultegra. would like to see u try using a longer surf rod haha that would b fun.
LOL you are here as well kiwi fisher! hahahha!!
Great video
good video, love your tips and keys, thanks for sharing! We also put a lot keys in our vlogs for surf fishing, jetty fishing, bottum fishing, razor clamming, crabbing, boating ..... we like to hear from your comments too.
TIP: give your rig to a surfer and tell him to drop it wayy out there in a sweet spot. Give him a redbull from your cooler first.
Thanks for the tips😁👍✌
Good tips!! Tried it already and for sure it increased my casting distance!!
Thanks guys!!

You ready fell in love with that stella after your dad recommended it.
Master of tutorials!
How far are y’all casting, btw? Amazing type of fishing.
I'm 12 and I'm casting 65 feet
Thanks for the pointers on this. Great tips for new anglers.
What is the best weight for a jig head to cast the farthest so I can cover the most ground coverage?
Fishing Virginia Beach and Hatteras most of my life I don't like the footstomp cast. I prefer planting my feet and whipping with my hips and shoulders for maximum cast. I do like the fact that you're showing these people to use the left hand pull down and right hand push. If you do not use the technique that I am suggesting please try and let us know how it worked for you.
I love watching your videos, please show what the fish looks like, what kind it is and the size you can keep. I am new to ocean fish and I am learning so much from you! Thank you so much!
Loved watching how you cleaned and grilled pompano.
thank you bro for good idea
Let’s gooo!!!! Another video🔔❤️👍🏽🤙
It’s a Shimano stella not Diana. But good tips my dude!
You need some Teva Sandals. They will stay on your feet, can be water soaked and will not be slippery . I love watching you fish and when I get to go I will take your advice about salting the bait. Such a simple idea.
LOL, I have some I was just being lazy:)
Your lady should get a Grammy for her contributions to the show. Rock on.
At what point do you release the line during the cast?
I like your videos. If it's long distance the person is looking to cast why are you showing them to cast from the parking lot instead of the water line? Would they not get an extra 20 yards of cast if they did this?
how do you make sure you don't cut your finger holding the braid when casting?
Nice video, what beach are you on?
How have I only just found this channel cracking content
Its great brother your tips help me a lot to cast far by my 10 foot rod thank you
Have a look at;- How to cast, with a fishing rod,- on UA-cam videos!
The reel is not a "grinding winch!"
Catch a big'un!
I attempted to surf cast with a 6 ft rod 🤣🤣🤣
Because I can't afford a 10 ft. Rod yet.
And yes it didn't go very far lol.
Daiwa makes a rly good surf rod for like $24.99 of something like that. I’ve got one and it’s held up great against everything from whiting to bull reds
I noticed that surf fishers put there rod holders far from the water. Is that because of the salt spray damaging the reels? Thanks for the videos.
Thanks 🙏 my friend for this tips god bless you and your family
I will definitely try
