There's many theories about the origin of calling it a paternoster (literally 'our father') - from the story of St Peter using it to catch a fish in the new testament (a John dory , the circles on the side are supposedly his finger marks), to associations with monks, to its resemblance to rosary beads, to (as you suggested) naming after either the town in SA or Paternoster Row in London.
One issue with it being named after Paternoster SA is that the town was only established/named in 1863, however the paternoster rig is mentioned by a fishing writer in 1653, & is probably even older than that.

It gets its name from the Latin phrase Pater Noster, which means “Our Father” - the beginning of the Lord’s Prayer in Latin. The origin of the term dates back to when people used beads to count prayers, with each bead on a string representing a prayer. In the paternoster rig, multiple hooks dangle from the main line, resembling a string of beads or knots, similar to a rosary or prayer beads.

Hi Roger. I really enjoy your channel.
I live in the Western Cape province of South Africa. We have a coastal town named Paternoster where we fish for bronze bream from the rocks between bamboo (kelp). I think that's where the Paternoster rig comes from because the anglers there use it for many years myself included. Strongz with your channel. I love using your tips!!

Hi Rog. Next time you try catching on solid lures try keeping you rod point down while retrieving the line and as well after you've hooked the fish. While my son was fishing for Tiger Fish in Zimbabwe the tout guide told him to keep the tmrod point down to prevent the fish throwing the lire and he had good results doing this. Hope this helps

Paternoster is a seaside fishing village on the west coast of South Africa situated between Sandanha bay and St Helena bay in the Western Cape province. chances are that the rig likely either originated from the fisher folk there or that it is a very common rig used in the area.

Some say the fishing rig got this name because St. Peter used a similar rig to catch a fish that was mentioned in a New Testament story. Others say Paternoster was the surname of the rig's inventor. But it is more likely the fishing rig is so named because it superficially resembles a rosary.

Hi Roger, thanks for your unbelievably informative videos. You’re a true asset to the community.
I took the family down to Shoalhaven Heads main beach and managed to catch a work right away. Almost as fun as fishing!
I tried out your double paternoster rig, 20lb mono main line, and 15lb FC leader. Copied your lengths to a tee - It looked great on the table at home, but as soon as I retrieved it for the first time, the leaders were horribly tangled around the main line and 3-way swivels.
The leaders, in fact, tied themselves in multiple knots.
Heads beach is was pretty sloppy. I notice it’s much much calmer conditions in all of your videos - do you think it’s a roughness of the surf that’s making a mess of my rig? Are the paternosters not great in rough surf?
I’ve been sussing out a few other beaches, looking for something more calm - Gerroa up the road looked a bit flatter today.

Often in South Africa on the second rig, we would add another lumo bead just above the sinker as well and add a second 30 to 50cm hook snoot to the bottom of the 2 way swivel with an appropriate size and type of hook for the fish being targeted (something like a 1/0 to 5/0 octopus beaked hook

G'day Roger. Love watching your videos. I just recently learned of an improved running star sinker setup. You can get plastic "sinker sliders" that slide up and down the line and stop the star sinker twisting and damaging your main line. It's also much easier to change the sinker weights with the simple clips. Give them a look.
