As a newbie to the Ashtanga practice I must say this is the best video by far. The breaths are not exhaustingly long. I feel I can do this practice everyday. The cues are perfect and so encouraging. This practice has been made accessible to everyone with variations I haven’t seen in other Ashtanga videos. Perfect video David, I hope to one day practice with you in real life. Namaste!
It is, and I've also used Richard Freeman's Intro and Primary series for decades. Both offer incredible pointers and a very authentic class. Look those up too.
this is sooo beautiful! i love this recording of the 1st series. i love watching it. again and again i find totally useful hints and new things to adjust, fine tune and expand my practice. hopefully for the next 40 years. thank you.
@@gypsealiI also used to practice this every morning many years ago and I can tell that my whole life was completely different. Life got in the way and I lost the recording and that practice. I then attended several courses, classes, yoga holidays, even lived in a yoga ashram for a few weeks a couple of times in India but none of them gave me what following this practice did. My body was much more relaxed, flexible, balanced and stronger. Not only felt so much better physically but mentally also. I do remember that I literally felt my body tensing up when I got stressed and that helped me to be mindful. I have finally managed to turn my life around and practicing with David again and immediately feel the difference. I think my body remembers. I can’t be grateful enough to him for sharing this amazing practice. He was the reason for me getting into yoga 20 years ago. Thank you, David! Love you! ❤
Thank you so much for sharing this video. I bought the DVD many years ago, but my laptop no longer has a DVD player. Thank you for making this accessible. 💜💜💜
Thank you David for this from Japan!! My DVD sets of yours bought about 10 years ago got too many scratches and stopped working about a month. I got ill recently and needed to watch the DVD over and over again, wishing that I go back to the practice some day. This youtube helps me keep going with the vinyasa yoga with you David!
@@damiano8124 Wow thank you Damian, I am well now. Fount out I got a stomach issue. To cure, got a new video as well, and keep practicing. I am sore somewhere in my body parts every day, and sleep well at night every day, hahaha.
So very excited for this video! I did my teacher training with David and Shelly, still use my book and I have just restarted my Ashtanga practice in the last month after a 12-year break! THANK YOU!
I just restarted ashtanga as well after a 15 year break!! it feels so amazing and I nearly cried the first day back. Thought I wasnt going to be able to do the poses, but amazing how the body remembers!!
the commentary is the most instructive guide on the primary series out there. If you do get chance to look at the screen this is poetry set in motion. Thankyou for sharing.
Feels likes I've been searching years for a video like this. Clear explanation, answers specific questions I had about poses and is a faster pace than i realized i could go. Will definitly be squeezing in more every day. Ty
David also did a gorgeous dvd where he and several other teachers demonstrate the intermediate series on the beach in Maui. David Williams is there and it has a cute segment with each one sharing how they came to ashtanga. It's so inspiring and uplifting to watch.
Thank you David! I would give you a hug. This video has been great to me, and I enjoy hearing you speak in your recent videos. Thank you and Hare Krsna!
☀️The guidance is perfect, with just enough positive encouragement. The variations make it accessible for everyone. Thank you for sharing, this is fantastic. ☀️Namasté

Thanks for uploading this video! I have this on DVD, but I no longer have a DVD player! I also have the Short Forms DVD, his guides and book! I've practiced yoga watching this video countless times, and I will do it again now it's available online. Now I need to find the time I had when I had no kids!
Thank you David! I just finished and feel fabulous! I couldn't do some of the poses so I made some substitutions to help gain flexibility to be able to do deeper poses in the future. I want to master this and modify it for the less flexible, SHEESH! You make it look so easy. ❤❤❤
What ever happened to the larger video with him speaking about the Ashtanga practice itself? It was a the a great reminder of how to approach the asanas themselves, bandhas and drishti.
Does anybody know the reason why utthita hasta padangusthasana is difeerent here, though this video was shot in 1995? When was this pose changed into a modern version?
Good question. I’ve wondered the same thing myself. My first guess is that it may be a Sharath thing. Kino was the first Ashtanga that I saw doing the “new” UHP, and although she studied under Guruji, she’s been Sharath’s student since his passing. Having done both versions, I will say that the forward fold does help with bringing the hip down even though I really resist putting in the extra work!
@@shlomobaruch I don't think that it is a Sharath thing, because on the Pattabhi Jois and 6 students video they are doing the modern version. I guess David is just doing old school here
There was a longer video. This is amazing but I am missing the fantastic postures alignment guidance and the talk about ashtanga itself prior to David guiding the series :( the complete video is great, this one is only showing the asanas, is it posible to upload the full video? Thank you!!! I admire you a lot and I hope to take one of your workshops one day :)

You start by learning the first two sun salutations then move on to the standing poses... That's how I was taught anyway.. then onto sitting poses, then lying, then inversions, like that .. namaste!
@@adevore1971yes, David himself said he first did the sun salutes and it was all he could handle, lol. You add one pose at a time and progress very slowly. Generally you only add a new pose when the prior poses are fairly easy for you. The Mysore approach makes it very easy for anyone to start, and it's always at your own pace. 😊
I love this video. The longer version got me into yoga 15 years ago. I keep coming back to it over the years, but admittedly, this is very long and hard. I'm committed to try this again to help with some long covid issues. Would you recommend to do the entire video (I hardly have time for that)? Any program to get into this to build up? Even the first 13 minutes (actually especially those) are intense! I was thinking to start with 1 set of suriya namaskara A or B, then standing sequence, then on another day the suriya namaskara A or B, followed by primary series. Or is it really supposed to be in one go?
The piror comment is correct. Always do the full A and B salutes, and add one pose as a time as you are ready. Better to do it properly and do less than to push, and miss the development and benefits.
Anytime your breath is too fast or intense to keep doing it through the nose, take a break, slow down, and then return once your breathing is long and deep again. Over time, your heart and lungs will adapt and you won't get out of breath. Always stick to nose breathing, and keep it slow and long
This my every day video David!! Thanx for your generosity and inspiration. Just a question: your 5 and 5 sun salutations are very hard and there's a double chaturanga. Why the new school is for 3 a and 3 b without that chaturanga?
Hi David, the pace of this series seems very fast to me. If I follow my breath, it's about a 10-sec respiration cycle, which is much slower than your video. My intention is to follow along as best I can and learn the sequence so I can perform it on my own at my own pace. Unless there is a reason for the fast pace? Thank you again for the wonderful video!! I had a hard copy of it but misplaced it.
Yo Peter, reduce the playback speed in the video settings. Might make the sound a bit strange but will be easier to keep up with. Gotta go with your own breath:)
Ashtanga is meant to be vigorous but Mysore style means you practice on your own, and you'd follow your own breath, not someone else's. That helps. One pose at a time and be patient with adding them.
Does anyone know the name of the song? I would like to play this during my ashtanga flow. the beginning demo is cut here but you can hear it in this video: ua-cam.com/video/QHexi-x3sqw/v-deo.html
