Hey Dan I took your advise and just picked up a 2007 commando or commander. I drove it around 2 nights ago in a snow storm decided it was close enough to what I wanted and bought it. My daughter drove it back the 300 some miles in the storm with the Interstate closed part of the way, she left me in the dust and got back almost an hour before I did. I was in my old front wheel drive van that is good in snow but this was ice with snow frosting. So I have not really driven it yet my kid drove it yesterday for about an hour drive and loves it. One of my daughters is a jeep girl and happy I got it, she says it is not nearly as nice as her 2001 grand cherokee she loves more than anything else, but says it drives very nice. I have a little forest of vehicles here multiple kids driving and I will retire one of my GM vans that has 290K plus miles and was "totaled" by a road rat awhile ago. The commander does not hold 7 other people like the van will or have the cargo area, it will not hold my tools and go were the Yukon will, my daughter helped me with her logic that for once in many years I will have a dad vehicle to just drive, since the kids all drive we usually take more than one vehicle anywhere so I just hope I do not get a ticket right away. Any problems I have I may be blaming you just FYI. Thanks I do really like it and have driven a couple of them looking at them.
That's awesome, I'm so glad she likes it! Tell her to like and subscribe to the Channel! Haha. I can't wait to get my family a huge Expedition so I can take the Commander as my daily 🤣🤣🤣

I have a 2006, 3.7 v6 and I went through the overheating issues. First the upper radiator hose blew and then about a month later the heater hose blew. I just replaced everything, lower radiator hose, both heater hoses, water pump and thermostat, I also replaced the heater core. It has 201,000 miles on it so I just replaced it all. GMB water pumps are sold at Advance Auto. I had the same problem with my New 2010 wrangler back then. After 4000 miles AC compressor went out. Dealer replaced it with a remanufactured from a local parts store. That's why AutoZone and Advanced courier parts delivery vehicles are plain white with no advertised signage because they dont want customers seeing this. Great video
Wow... I didn't realize dealerships were shady like that. In my ignorance I assumed dealerships had to use OEM parts. I'm sure customers would flip out if they saw an AutoZone parts truck roll up to the dealership... Incredible

Some of the used car departments at dealers have their own used car mechanic and do not use the other folks who work for the factory brand. So they want to save money on fixing cars and go with cheaper parts. If this was a Jeep dealer and you took it to the new car service area and had them fix it then I am betting you will get factory parts and not AutoZone stuff.
That is indeed an odd issue. I had never heard of the impeller not spinning. I have a 2012 5.7 Jeep that is showing a similar issue. I'm replacing the water pump tomorrow so maybe I'll also see an impeller issue
Ive been also eyeballing one of these. For the price I feel it’s an unbeatable deal but I have been worried as to why the value tanked so hard. This video has been an eye opener.
I’m buying one tomorrow a 06 5.7L w/ 125k miles ...the seller said he was having issues with the gauge showing that it’s over heating but the engine actually isn’t I talked him down quite a bit from the asking price taking it to a mechanic next week hopefully it’s not a big issue 🙏🏼 thanks for the video!
Project Dan H Thanks! Got it fixed it was similar to the issue you had whoever replaced the water pump last didn’t do it correctly the clamp wasn’t tightened all the way leaking fluid and overheating...replaced the clamp topped it off and it runs like a dream!
My 2006 5.7L Commander has the 'Transmission over temp' gremlin. Not cheap getting these worked on. To replace the heater core involved a dash roll.....$400+
Thanks brother.. a little integrity goes a long way. Lol. it sucks when a fix doesn't go as planned, not only is your Rig still down but you lose a video too. I'm extremely glad it's all sorted.
Project Dan H I think this is a better video. I think you could still make s video on how to replace the thermostat even if it wasn’t your problem it could be someone else’s and you could show how to do it
Hey Dan, what year and trim were your Commander? I have a 2008 Jeep Commander Overland with the 5.7L V8 HEMI, and I think I may be having something along the lines of the same issues. I'm going to take a look at the water pump to make sure that it's not GMB, and probably replace the radiator cap and thermostat. Also, would the recommended temperature for the thermostat be 180F or 203F? Thank you, by the way, for your helpful video.
Hi there, enjoyed the video... I see this was done 3 years ago, I'm a little late in posting a comment.... First off on my hemi engine... I had to replace my water pump three times in using Gates... it just would not hold up, had to purchase a Mopar water pump and had no issues there after...I've never had problems with Gates products until now.... For some reason, it just cannot hold up to this hemi engine... Also buyer beware with this Hemi engine.... Mine is the third generation Hemi... I had to rebuild mine because of engineering flaw... Just do your research you will find that when you reach anywhere from 100 to 120,000 miles on the engine maybe even less, your intake valves will collapse.... The only way to prevent this from happening is having a machine shop correct the problem on the cylinder heads, all rebuild engine shops no of this issue....Best of luck!
I'm having a similar issue pulling my hair 2006 4.7 commander builds up pressure under load like a head gasket will do but when in idle its fine when I drive uphill will over heats but as soon as I go down hill it cools down
Shoutout to Uncle Rob and 2 Black Booties Hhahahaha! Great Episode Dan!! Love the commander! I need some help with my 4Runner so you need to come down to the south this summer!
Hey Dan , what coolant did you use ? Reading on an old forum , some guys were strictly opposed to using anything but Mopar HOAT coolant. They said not even to top it off with “mixable “ coolant , will cause blockage in radiator and heater core. Not too many forums to read up on these , I guess because of the short production run.
another thing I've learned about my 5.7 commanders 1) the cover over the engine does nothing but provides a home for mice & rats. it serves no functional purpose. mine are in the attic - permanently 2) keep the drain holes for the skylight pan open - uncover the exit fitting in the floor panel and enlarge the hole by cutting the rubber reduced section off - the designers should not have reduced the exit diameter of this fitting - it always gets clogged up - also, check the drain every month by opening the skylight & pouring water in the pan - each side - it should flow freely - either blow the pipes out with a compressor or double up a stiff wire ( no sharp points ) and clean them out periodically. 3) learn how to change the oil & keep il changed regularly - one of mine has 275 k miles on it and the engine and the transmission still run like a champ.
I picked one up too, glad to hear you figured it out. Anything else going wrong? I have 140k on mine and it is slowly falling apart, I am slowly approaching the max of my "well if this is the last thing" mark.
Last month I replaced the rotting muffler with a Magnaflow.. It sounds amazing. I Just Fixed the Aux input in the head unit and I replaced 2 bulbs in the heater controls while I was at it. I Also Put an oil catch can in and replaced the PCV Valve while I was At. This past weekend I took it on a family trip and drove 200 miles down to the Jersey Shore. Even with all 4 kids and the wife crammed inside it still ran like a Gem. This summer i will try to rust proof the undercarriage, I want it to last forever! lol
Maybe I should’ve named the Black Pearl Black Booty instead. Lol. Glad she’s up and running again. And good thing you have a great mechanic that can do the warranty work.
I have a 2006 with 150k on it..the overheating issue is killing me..- changed WP and Upper/lower hoses/ rad cap and still not solved..radiator is next I guess.. its not the Heads Im pretty sure
Guy I got a 2006 jeep commander limited with the hemi and a water pump swap is nothing on that truck. I did mine in just under an hour. You just have to keep track of the bolts. I just did the heater core tee swap and did it with just regular tools.
Well I purchased One and since I had it has started smoking white smoke out of the tail pipe and cuts off I don’t know what to do I think it’s the motor 🤨
I live in long island too. I drive a WK now and am thinking about getting a similar car. Maybe with the hemi too. What do you think of the car after having it for a little while. How is it on gas.
I absolutely love everything about my XK. The Hemi is amazing too. The Only down side is the gas mileage. If I take it easy and cruise on the highway I can get her up to 14mpg. Realistically I'm more at 11.5 cuz the Hemi Has Balls and I love to get on it!
I bought 2005 Grand Cherokee (WK/WH) just over a year ago, with 5,7 hemi in it and videos like these are good for future reference, if things start to break :P It had 147thousand kilometers on it (just over 91thousand miles) and so far it's held up well enough. Lower ball joints had to be replaced, but other than that, just regular oil changes and the like. Hopefully, now that I said something good about it, it won't explode right away... :P But for a winter it's pretty awesome. Knee deep snow is no problem.
Hey Dan, Great video I'm ordering a mopar water pump not now but right now! Bought one for my mom so I know how you feel about having someone dear to you driving something dependable. Have you or Gab has ever heard of a commander while driving losing acceleration but if you pat the gas pedal it kicks back in? After patting the pedal the rpms jump back up, and drives fine! It seem to do it when accelerating through 3rd and 4th gears again intermittently.
thank you for watching! I have heard of a problem like that but can't remember what the cause was. I think it was a bad computer somewhere. these new age cars are lousy with all these sensors everywhere.
@@ProjectDanH Thanks and keep it up, your vids are educational and entertaining! If I get it tracked down I'll definitely let you know what to lookout for!
Took mine to a show after showing "trans overheat" for a while and they said it was a faulty sensor. It still kicks in the fans which makes the engine really loud at low RPMs idk
I have a 2007 Grand Cherokee 5.7 , bought it from my family. Second “first car” 200,000 miles on it. It was overheating , replaced the Radiator, top post hose, and thermostat. Drove fine for a while, started overheating again. Got it sent off, the “dreaded head gaskets” were cracked so I paid for them to get fixed. Here I am 2 weeks later and I’m overheating again. Can’t even keep water in it, and when I do put coolant in it, it overfills, and starts bubbling because it’s so hot. Your video now has me wanting to replace the water pump and also flush out the coolant system, so if you want to make a video dedicated to that! Please do. Also, would any coolant be okay?? I know mopar is recommended but I’m from KY and don’t know if it’s here.
your rad may be trapping air too. new rad and new H20 pump while you're at it. definitely use that Zerex coolant with HOAT that is recommended by mopar. good luck bro
I almost have to wonder if the hole that the shaft goes through on that plastic blade expanded just enough over time from the heat of the water/coolant causing it too slip. Or just poor quality. I don’t even think plastic blades should be used. It should be all metal. Im glad the Commander is all good! Love the look of it. Things friggin mint!
Thanks man! Yea.. its a piss poor design, especially when its made of plastic. The dealer replaced the water pump before I purchased it.. lasted only 1000 miles or so
Wow I have same problem I own 2006 jeep commander unlimited 4x4 5.7 hemi ran great at first still dose I live in Texas get real hot in summer one day I heard bubbling ,crackling sound coming from engine I notice I was over heating I too also bought new water pump with new thermost and I still have same problem now so I will buy a another water pump from dealer I did order the water pump on internet but sense I own more a few off road vehicles I don't driver the commander much first i thought sense I installed a 4 inch super lift and 33x12.50 18 tires, this is why im overheating apparently not the case so I will need to buy new water pump and see if this my issue also I may replace radiator that has bigger cooling tubes radiator I built this commander for overlanding style camping / off road

I'm going to try to get to the mechanic in a few days when I get the money together but my question is if I keep the reservoir and radiator topped off completely full with coolant it's impossible that I would overheat correct long as it's totally full of coolant ?

Hey Dan, would you give any tips for buying a Hemi commander? Like how to check for the head gaskets or for engine problems? I’d love to buy one for my first car
Hey! maintenance records! you'll want a clean well maintained , well serviced hemi. check the carfax. make sure the oil isn't milky. make sure its smooth and doesnt run loud and clunky. God bless.
@@ProjectDanH Thanks 😊 I appreciate the input! I’d love to own one of these 😄 the hemi sounds amazing and the car looks great! Not to mention the weather in New Jersey is perfect for a 4x4 hemi 💪

I have two 5.7 commanders. love the engine, but you need to learn to keep it up. BUY A LOW TEMP THERMOSTAT ( 185 DEGREES ). It will always run a little cool, and prevent overheating when towing.
Nope, it perfect! look out for a kicked in mid row AC vent. It comes out of the back of the center console. I didnt notice it was broken till my daughter tried to adjust the direction of the AC flow.
How is gates water pump doing it been over a year now I think about buying one for my 300c the gates water pump is 54$ on Amazon and the ome water pump is 130 $on Amazon I like to save some money if I could
i like to call working on the 5.7 jeep commander; "Commander confusion". This is a special station wagon with a mind of its own, and she needs special attention.
The Chrysler OEM water pump are damn near destructible, I have 5 hemis 4 of them have almost 200000 miles, if it's your head gasket you would have missfire and white exhaust smoke out your tail pipe... Also I use 195 degree thermostat in all my hemi
I have a Jeep commander 2010 3.0crd Problem is everytime I reverse and slow down the speed at the red light engine suddenly shutting down.. what is the problem with my car..;( plz help me to solve this problem
I love my Cherokee XJ, but I'm really getting interested in Commanders. I sat in the driver's seat of a wrecked one in the salvage yard today and didn't wanna get out.
As I told you there is a design flaw in those Third Gen Hemi's. Watch (Uncle Tony's Garage) on UA-cam he explains just what the Flaw is. It's has to do with the Camshaft being moved to far from the Crankshaft. This guy is an Engine builder old school I think you should watch all his videos on the third gen Hemi. Watch his Videos Dan. I'm hoping you have no more problems but from what I've read and seen well let's say ?
Dealers don't use OEM parts when they have to pay for them nor do warranty companies due to cost. A lot of water pumps with block housing will be rebuilt and the use junk plastic parts and thin seals and bearings ect.. If you to save time spend more money 😂 I learned this on my Jeep because cheap doesn't fix Jeep. OEM or better will last the life of your vehicle but cheap stuff is junk and you'll replace these parts more often.
Shit inlove my 2010 jeep comander I have the same problem last year they changed the water pump but they didn't changed the thermostat ...last moth do oil changed and they and I notice that is liking oil dont want to get rid of that jeep I seen lot of video people having problems with comander ..
Hey Hernandez I got the commander too del 2006 y no se por que me aparece transmission over temp I have no idea and when I start it stuck in 3gear no in D
@edward I changed thermostat and radiator had a crack so I had to change it too. Also changed out radiator hoses and it’s been running strong about a week now. Hope you can get yours taken care of bro.
@ Edward Lion I replaced all myself, The radiator was repairable at local radiator shop. He changed tanks for 75 bucks, the thermostat was about $20. The hose was about $35. I didn’t have to change the water pump but new one was only $90. I live in San Antonio TX.. if that helps for pricing.
To fix your problem is to actually buy a aluminum radiator. Why? Well it's a hemi and factory radiator has plastic mounts and heat cracks plastic. I fixed mine and to the commander owner's. I strongly recommend aluminum radiator.
So the 500 mile trip home got it hot enough to melt the plastic impeller enough to get it to become loose on the shaft, go figure...dumb idea to use plastic on any component that gets hot.
Going the extra mile for MADE IN AMERICA! respect!

Great video man props for not just putting out a video if the problem wasn’t solved. Can’t believe the dealership put in that junk water pump

I have the hemi ...5.7.... and also have the overheating to go along with it lol
Hola dan ! Con esta nueva bomba de agua no se volvió a calentar la comander. ?
Sounds like a ticket getter with that hemi!!
Great Info. I just paid 256$ for thermostats I should have ask did they use aftermarket parts. 150 labor the charge me . I think I got ripe off.
Yikes! 50 bucks and a couple hours of your time on the next thermostat change👍
Love the new black beauty! You have an awesome channel.
Thank you so much Joey. I really appreciate it. 👊
Hey that’s booty black booty 🤷🏾♂️🤣🤣🤣🤣great truck though n love the humor
Hey Dan, what year and trim were your Commander? I have a 2008 Jeep Commander Overland with the 5.7L V8 HEMI, and I think I may be having something along the lines of the same issues. I'm going to take a look at the water pump to make sure that it's not GMB, and probably replace the radiator cap and thermostat. Also, would the recommended temperature for the thermostat be 180F or 203F?
Thank you, by the way, for your helpful video.
2010 Hemi Limited. Keep the thermostat the factory temp.. its most likely the water pump. lol
Mike said “he put his savage in town skills to good use”
OMG! Savage in Town 😂 ... Savage in Jeeps!!
Thank you for watching and thank you for your input!
I'm having a similar issue pulling my hair 2006 4.7 commander builds up pressure under load like a head gasket will do but when in idle its fine when I drive uphill will over heats but as soon as I go down hill it cools down
Probably the water pump failing!
I’m blown away at the water pump
Dan could use your expertise on my next jeep purchase. Let me k😢 what you think might compare with the 4.0
hey Dan, greetings from Mount Kisco NY, mine is the 2009 4.7 v8 with 57k miles on it.
Greeting Wilmer! Sounds like a Great Jeep!
You did a great job on the video 👍

Great video guys
Glad you enjoyed it!
Shoutout to Uncle Rob and 2 Black Booties Hhahahaha! Great Episode Dan!! Love the commander! I need some help with my 4Runner so you need to come down to the south this summer!
Sounds good buddy! Id love to get down there ASAP!
Hey Shrek! I'm using Zerex G5 50/50 HOAT pre mix. it's working very well! same hemi engines that's in all the Chryslers and Dodges too👍
another thing I've learned about my 5.7 commanders 1) the cover over the engine does nothing but provides a home for mice & rats. it serves no functional purpose. mine are in the attic - permanently 2) keep the drain holes for the skylight pan open - uncover the exit fitting in the floor panel and enlarge the hole by cutting the rubber reduced section off - the designers should not have reduced the exit diameter of this fitting - it always gets clogged up - also, check the drain every month by opening the skylight & pouring water in the pan - each side - it should flow freely - either blow the pipes out with a compressor or double up a stiff wire ( no sharp points ) and clean them out periodically. 3) learn how to change the oil & keep il changed regularly - one of mine has 275 k miles on it and the engine and the transmission still run like a champ.
Yes!! I blast mine out with an air hose periodically! Great advice!!!
Great video. That’s awesome to just be the pump. Are you getting reimbursed by the dealer for the work?
Thanks man! Yes the Dealership paid for everything! Score!
This summer i will try to rust proof the undercarriage, I want it to last forever! lol
I have the 2008 Jeep Commander it’s black too. Mine has 165,000 and it just overheated today, that is why I’m watching this video.
Check the water pump!
Maybe I should’ve named the Black Pearl Black Booty instead. Lol. Glad she’s up and running again. And good thing you have a great mechanic that can do the warranty work.
LMAO 🤣 I'll trade you name's! Yea Gabe is a great blessing to have in my corner
I have a 2006 with 150k on it..the overheating issue is killing me..- changed WP and Upper/lower hoses/ rad cap and still not solved..radiator is next I guess.. its not the Heads Im pretty sure
My mechanic thought my issue was a restricted rad at first... yours may very well be
My jeep is doing the same overheating transmission?? Do u have a solution ?? Please 🙏🙏🙏
Water Pump was my solution. I also considered a clogged radiator might be the culprit but the water pump did the trick
Great video 👍👍
Thank you 👍
I get the check gauges issue only when I disconnect the Coolant Temperature Sensor. Sounds like electrical issue.
Nope... It was definitely overheating. Lol, bad water pump
Yeah I saw, that's crazy how the pump and the shaft weren't mated together. Lol the plastic blades are never good.
@@daimientaylor3108 I know right! Complete crap! 🤯
Guy I got a 2006 jeep commander limited with the hemi and a water pump swap is nothing on that truck. I did mine in just under an hour. You just have to keep track of the bolts. I just did the heater core tee swap and did it with just regular tools.
But did you get your mechanic to make a dealership pay for it??? 😎
Nah.lol

Great to hear! The WK and XK are basically the same. Hope this can help someone

@@verlinsupersaintcasey6494 thank you! I really appreciate your views!
Took mine to a show after showing "trans overheat" for a while and they said it was a faulty sensor. It still kicks in the fans which makes the engine really loud at low RPMs idk
oh man, that's strange.. when Gabe showed me the water pump impeller spinning freely in the shaft there was no doubt we found the problem
@@ProjectDanH I took it to the shop* i don't think there is any real issues
My Jeep does this as well. Will just randomly say ltransmission over temp" and get real loud until I turn it off and on again. Did you fix yours?
@@thedailyp00per no I haven't but it only really happens when I drive the car hard
@@thedailyp00per hey guys I also had this problem, the fix is a a/c condenser
Was this a dodge dealership that put that bad water pump in?
Yes, Cortese Auto Group in Rochester NY
The dealer replaced the water pump before I purchased it.. lasted only 1000 miles or so
If we have hot area what can I do about overhaeting

As I told you there is a design flaw in those Third Gen Hemi's. Watch (Uncle Tony's Garage) on UA-cam he explains just what the Flaw is. It's has to do with the Camshaft being moved to far from the Crankshaft. This guy is an Engine builder old school I think you should watch all his videos on the third gen Hemi. Watch his Videos Dan. I'm hoping you have no more problems but from what I've read and seen well let's say ?
I saw that... the idiot proof oil drip test.. scary

To fix your problem is to actually buy a aluminum radiator. Why? Well it's a hemi and factory radiator has plastic mounts and heat cracks plastic. I fixed mine and to the commander owner's. I strongly recommend aluminum radiator.
That's a good idea!
and quick trip to the dealer and a face to face as to why they used shit water pumps might be in order...that could have blown the engine.
I agree 100% percent
So the 500 mile trip home got it hot enough to melt the plastic impeller enough to get it to become loose on the shaft, go figure...dumb idea to use plastic on any component that gets hot.
I agree 100% what a completely stupid and unreliable part. It drove me crazy.
