"used to be" is right! I cut my teeth on a 77 CJ7... They went to YJ, then TJ, now JK. 8 total in close to 30 years. If I ever own another Jeep, it will likely be another YJ!
Couldn’t help but subscribe. Love the fact you daily a ‘94 that isn’t pristine, and you go through fixing all the problems in detail as they occur. The craftsman tools and nothing super fancy, just fixing the Jeep! -best Jeep repair channel on UA-cam.
Great info on the "heater" trick. If the heat coming out of your vents in the cab isn't HOT after the engine has been operating for awhile, check the thermostat and radiator hoses for temperature differences. If they are about the same, most likely the thermostat is stuck OPEN. This is the first thing I ask customers, "Does the heat coming out of your vents seem warm or hot?" Also forgot to mention the tid-bit about the radiator fan. If the engine is up at operating temperature and the thermostat opens but the temperature isn't decreasing, the computer will have the radiator fan operate. If the fan doesn't work, then that's another path to troubleshoot. Two different options here if the thermostat is GOOD so you are looking at the radiator fan now: 1) If the engine is running cold, verify the fan isn't ON constantly. 2) If the engine is running hot, verify the fan does turn ON when commanded. Most of the time, you can use a scan tool to operate the fan electronically. If you don't have a tool, pull the plug for the fan (not sure how to do it on an older vehicle with a fan clutch) and apply 12VDC to the pins/sockets. The fan doesn't always run at FULL speed, so 9 to 12 volts is a good test to verify the fan operating speeds (less voltage means lower fan speed, higher voltage means higher fan speed). I use a 9V battery for a lower voltage test. If the voltage test works and the fan is operational, then work back to the sending unit, coolant temp sensor, or the relay/control module to verify that it's putting out the correct voltage when needed, or operating at all. You can get into the weeds on this error, but time put forth up front will save you money and time later on if the problem isn't diagnosed properly the first time. You hit all of the other key points.
My BMW 2004 model....has been running cold...last night ..in a split second it went to the H.... however....the car didn't overheat....is that a false reading? I checked the cylinder heads..and oil....it didn't look frothy.. etc...so I didn't blow a head gasket. I was told it is either the thermostat or the coolant temperature sensor...any advice?
@@williambernstein4313 if it spikes randomly, most likely wiring to the sensor. Wiggle the wiring and have someone else watch the gauge. If it doesn't fluctuate, possible sensor. Worst case, your ECM is going nuts. Hate BMW/Mercedes for their wiring and computer issues. Thermostats don't react in the blink of an eye, so I would put that further down on the troubleshooting list.
Good list Just adding to carefully feel the radiator for hot spots like the lines. Ive also had what appeared to be a clogged radiator but end up being a new thermostat the customer swapped. Pulling the thermostat may help disganotics. If it just takes a little longer to overheat not the thermostat. if it doesnt overheat anymore id look for a heat exchange or flow issue.
@@williambernstein4313 So what did end up being? The car did overheat. Thats what the H means. Come to terms with that, so you prevent more. What exactly were you checking the heads for? Minus a rod sticking through you cant see head damage at all. You cant see damage externally when a chain snaps and valves smash into pistons. Running cold is not good. running hot is not good. It should hold operating temp. Start there.
I have a 1992 Jeep YJ with a 2.5 engine. I have only one sensor. My gauge is not working but other gauges are working in the cluster. When I bought the Jeep someone had put an after market temp gauge in. Changed the sensor at the thermostat housing. It worked. I found the old sensor still plugged into the wiring plug harness. I put a new sensor in the where the aftermarket was and plugged the original plug back in. The original gauge still didn't work. Also the aftermarket didn't work. I suspect the original wiring may be cut some place under the dash. As mentioned other gauges are working in the cluster. Thoughts. Your videos are good and enjoy them. I just want the original to work. Thank you. P.S. I do not have another sensor at the back of the engine any where arrond the head. I have looked and felt many times. Is this a 4.0 addition?
I live on a tropical region, therefore I installed a 160 degree thermostat along with a new water pump, radiator and auxiliary transmission fluid cooler. I run the stock fan setup and also have a 3 year old fan clutch. It runs at 210 on the dashboard but sometimes it runs a little hot. I changed the sending unit 2 times and no change. I installed a separate temp gauge and placed the sensor on the radiator drain plug hole. And it stays at 180 and max out at 200
210 is already too hot and you need to get the temperature reading as the close to the head as possible so the ecu can advance or retard timing correctly for the head temp vs manifold charge temperature. What is a sending unit in reference to a thermostat? Never heard that used outside of a fuel pump? Guessing youre talking about a temp sensor in a thermostat housing? Or the stepper behind the cluster? Run it without the thermostat since 160 is not what the ecu wants anyway and tropical means no snow? 180 is perfect. Might run a little rich but should hit all readiness monitors and go closed loop. I got into tuning becaus my Altima was running 203 degrees for emissions.
My little diagnostic test for the thermostat off a cold start is to watch the temperature gauge as the engine warms up. When it hits the thermostat opening temp (195° for my YJ) the temperature on the gauge will suddenly drop when the cold radiator starts circulating. I personally have never ever had one stick open but your explanation on how to tell if it stuck open is correct. I have run plenty of engines with no thermostat in a pinch and the exact behavior you described as stuck open occurs. In a pinch on the road if your thermostat does fail stuck closed, you can remove it. I did that once and salvaged the torn gasket and used my wives finger nail polish for gasket sealer!
Good tips. I love how you used your wife's fingernail polish for the repair. I've actually used my kids fingernail polish in some videos for drive line alignment. Haha!
@@JeepSolid I changed the thermostat and the coolant reservoir. When I hooked the three hoses back up I may have crossed the heater hoses. Is that gonna hurt anything? The reservoir did fill to the top when I started the motor. My friends are telling me it's okay. Dude, is it really okay? ...lol... I gotta know. 😜
If you have a problem with a P0188 or something related to that, always look at your temperature sensor plug to make sure you don't have a bad wire on that, that is what my problem came from. Very simple but it will give a P0188 code like mine has. Check the voltage on the plug if the wire is not appearing broken to make sure you have voltage there. Simple fix though. If it is broken or the wire is off, get a new plug connector for the sensor at somewhere like O'Reilly's.
I own a 2003 JGC WJ w/4.0 and it just pulled a code P1281 today. That code is for the engine running too cool initially. I had just put in a new t-stat about two weeks before. I took apart the t-stat housing and wouldn't you know it, the t-stat was stuck open. So, if you have that P1281 code or your vehicle takes a long time to get up to operating temperature, consider replacing the t-stat.
I'm sure you've repaired the lower rad hose leak by now. Every time I find one of those spring clamps on a vehicle I'm working on it gets tossed to the scrap bin and replaced with something that actually works. Even a cheap gear clamp is preferable to any spring type.
Appreciate your videos. I have a 95 yj, 4cl, 210k kms. Runs well, no leaks, but the temp gauge fluctuates a bit when up to operating temp, briefly showing a little hotter while driving, though most dead centre on the gauge while driving, and always dead centre when idling in traffic. When I turn the engine off but leave the key in acc, the gauge often runs up another 10 degrees C or so, to the next line on the gauge, but not to the warning line. It settles to the middle line as soon as I start it back up. Heat works great. Original rad, no visible leaks and I keep an eye on the coolant level both in the rad and reservoir, but I do faintly smell coolant sometimes when close to the rad after driving. Newer rad cap, new heater core and rad hoses this winter. I rebled the system thinking might be air. Haven't changed the t-stat though. Suggestions?
An excellent contribution - 'on point'. Goes to show that you can teach an 'old dog' new tricks - like the heater hose warming before the radiator hose to verify the status of the thermostat! Thank you. Lloyd, Queensland, Australia
His one for ya!!! 1994 YJ Temp gauge went to zero! I replaced the thermostat, sensor at thermostat and rear sensor, replaced the fluid, replaced the pig tail at front sensor. Then the temperature gauge now goes to hot!!!! But system not overheating. No warm air either
I always have to stop and think when you say drivers side or passenger side since we drive in the left here is New Zealand. But I like how the jeep uses a lot of metric fittings. I guess it’s got Japanese parts like the transmission being a Toyota unit.
My 97 Jeri Cherokee ac fan wont stop Running when i turn the car off. Replaced the relay in the fuse box that’s in the engine bay and the fan. Jeep doesn’t overheat and the heat is good. Replaced the thermostat when i changed the water pump and coolant.
I have a 2004 Jeep Liberty 3.7L...during this past summer the a/c blew cold, then hot air intermittently. Now that the weather is cooler and I'm trying to run the heater...same thing except that it doesn't blow warm air nearly as much as it's blowing cold. Help, please?
I am having these issues, about a year ago I noticed fluctuation so while doing an oil change I replaced the thermostat a short time later I purchased a heads up display as I was having issues with the dash being to dark in daylight and having to turn parking lights on to see the speedo well ( the heads up works great) it has 5 readouts one being water temp, everything has been good up until two weeks ago sitting in traffic on a hot day I watched both gauges working hand in hand raising temp to the point of the heads up setting off an alarm so I pulled into a parking lot and let it cool, I found the water was low never having leaks no oil in water and no water in oil I filled water in Radiator and overflow to correct level also tried burping, things seemed to be ok until last night driving 20 miles to a friends before leaving I check water and oil and they were just as they should be and all was good until leaving it was another hot evening at sundown so I turned the A/C on after a couple of miles I noticed the. temp on both gauges was about 130 and fluctuated up to 145 and back so I tried turning the heater on and with my hand in front of the vent the hot air felt like it was plenty warn and right where it should be but the gauges stay low for another 10 miles home, this morning after checking water and oil I went for a ride temp came up and stoped where it was last night 130's-140's after a while I turned the heater on again on was feeling like its normal 180 so now the only thing I can think of is it being the temp sensor........ any thoughts?
So I’ve been having a problem with my gf’s 2008 Jeep Liberty. I’ve changed the Radiator, Thermostat, radiator fan and temp sensor. It fixed the over heating momentarily then it started again. So I was told to purge the air out of the system and that worked for a bit. But now it over heats when the outside temp warms up. I’m not losing coolant but the temp still rises.
@@Super122891 still gets hot but doesn’t overheat to the point of spewing fluid. i just can’t figure it out. i’m hoping it’s the radiator fan. i bought an aftermarket one. So i’m hoping using a jeep factory will fix the issue.
When replacing the coolant temp sensor, after I get the new one on, can I just tighten it with my hand or do I need to make it so tight that there’s no wiggle at all?
Much appreciated for the clarification definitely helps it's just thinking about that to tell the difference and to pinpoint the problem and to help pinpoint the problem
I have a 97 Jeep Cherokee. Temp gauge working but says censor bad? Do I really have to replace it? Is it necessary? The suv is 22 years old , but only 140k on it. Lmk, thx! Love the videos
Hi great videos by the way!! 👍🏼 I have recently purchased a 1997 XJ Cherokee ( love it!!) I have been towing with it this weekend, so working harder that normal, after switching off the engine water was coming out of the expansion vessel, I have left it overnight, topped up the coolant and driven it to my garage and the temperature stayed at a nice 90°c Do you want this to be a long-term vehicle for us? So what would you do to guarantee a hasslefree future for this vehicle regarding cooling and overheating? Love you by the way, look forward to hearing from you, Chris (UK).
I have a 1987 YJ 4.2 and I'm having trouble finding the correct coolant sensor. All the sensor I have purchased run too hot on my gauge. They are not calibrated to match my stock gauge. Can you help with the current part. Love your stuff Thanks
Hi there....love the Giants pennant....my temp gauge in the Jeep....91 Wrangler (YJ?)....is flat...dead...not reading anything.....wondering if it is my sending unit....where is that link again.....I will try and see if the fluid moves with the cap off and starting her up...thank you in advance ..~Vince...San Jose CA
I have 1992 Jeep Cherokee XJ with all stock parts in it. My problem is my Jeep takes awhile to heat up and does NOT hold the heat in the cab very when it’s not running or driving down the freeway. It used to get pretty toasty before the large metal fuse on the back on my van speed control fried up. We thought it was my fan blowing motor cause that died when the fuse controller died so we replaced my fan blower (which needed replacing anyways due to a loud motor) and then we pulled my dash off and looked behind the control unit and found the fried unit. Right now we have the blower power spliced to hot wire so it will turn on. We do not have a replacement controller yet, my Jeep heats up after running awhile and everything but I feel like it’s suppose to heat up faster then it does (right now it takes about 45 mins to be comfortable with a high idle, and or many stops and restarts from running around in town. ) my thoughts are it could be a heater core issue, or my vents are stuck on halfway open cause the unit fried while my boyfriend was adjusting the speed on the fan. (But my fan sounds like it’s running on high) I also have a vacuum leak running from my HVAC under my fender. Would this vacuum line running along my whole under hood be a reason for my lack on heat in my vents? Only my defrosters on my dash blows out a significant amount of heat. Please help. It’s cold in Michigan lol.
The lower hose on my 1995 yj 2.5 is not warming up at all. Gauge is reading around 120 degrees too after a radiator replacement, tstat and gasket and new fluid. Any suggestions? Love your videos!
does calcium buildup on the cooling sensor( in all that hot water) for computer get a low reading ? I ran a lot of water for 15 years. now its kind-a 50/50 coolant and water. But there was calcium build up on the cooling temp sensor. I scrapped a lot off but, well. I don't know. The temp gage shos insrease hemp whn start up and drive for a mile or so, But the temp gage goes up to 160 and then thremostate opens up, and then ruuns well at 150*. In 93degree weather, idling at a red lite, it will go up to 200 till the light changes and I drive, then it cools down again to the 140s. I think the thermostate is plunger stem worn and wobbles, so it avcually gets stable after a while. Its great you talk about the car systems.
Just bought my 2014 wrangler 4 door. When i first turn on the vehicle the third knob that controls air flow to floor or vents a/c blinks yellow for a min and won’t work. Then stops blinking and starts working. The check engine light came on and said it was a bad thermostat. Is this a bad thermostat? I’m going do the checks from your video tomorrow. Thanks
Said "So ...."38 times🤣 this is great I took a wrong turn and dont feel stable with your camera jitters but you are a good dude this video will help some people👍🇺🇲
It's a 'while I'm in there' change. The cost of the sensor is usually less than the trouble to have to go back and drain the coolant, and change it after the fact. Kind of like when you're replacing all the old, murky brake fluid when you're bleeding the brakes.
What are your thoughts on this. YJ ran fine at 210 degrees. I just did a flush of the radiator system. Now, when I turn the key to the first position when the engine is cold the temperature gage immediately jumps to the dash mark just passed 100° (120ish?) and I run warm at 230ish..I just replaced the rear sensor. Thoughts? Thanks in advance and appreciate your help.
Hi, I have a 2013 traverse overheating...I first checked for leaks and could not find one. Old thermostat replaced looked like it did needed to be replqced but still as I drove temperature needle was moving above normal temp..no enginge light on dashboard so doubt it's the temp sensor..not sure what else to look for..any suggestions? Please help. Thank you..new subscriber.
happy new year - great video ! My Crown 195 Tstat opens up and closes properly - however the water temp remains at ab. 185 which is too cold. Your thoughts ? Thanks !
Got one for ya, 1984 CJ7 valve cover gasket, stock has 11 mounting holes, mine has 15, would it be possible the heads been switched? I had to order one from NAPA.
Hello. I have 2004 jeep grand Cherokee with a 4.0. I replaced the thermostat months ago. Now I have this code P1281. Does that mean I need to replace the thermostat again? It the coolant temperature sensor? Inside the cab the gauge rises to 210. So I know it can't be the sender sensor. The code reads staying cold for too long. What might you suggest? Is there a way test the coolant temperature sensor on the thermostat housing? Like an ohms test? Any help would be great.
Nice video, but the one thing I was interested in was not elaborated upon. What about determining if the temperature sending unit is good or bad? It still may be working, but just sending a higher temperature then expected. That's what I'd like to figure out, but otherwise yeah you can go buy a new one.
That Coolant temperature sensor . Do you know what size is of diameter it is . Because I’m looking at hasco ) thermostat housing that they have on there website and I was wondering what size is that coolant temperature sensor is it a 3/8 1/4 or 1-8
I have a 95 Grand Jeep Cherokee Laredo. When I start it Jeep engine runs rough, tries to go dead. Idle goes up and down. Jeep runs better when it gets warms up 210 degrees . Can it be the Throttle Position Sensor or Idle Air Control or both? Thx Michael
My 2016 jeep patriot is over heating. I topped off fluid. Still over heating. It has a 178000 miles on it. Would a radiator flush work. Or is it the thermostats.
5:41 Why is it that the block doesn't have that same "u-shaped groove cavity" as the housing? You can see that "groove" in the block itself, but its only got that hole thats open and not the rest of it?
I have a 2004 Jeep Cherokee Laredo and the engine light is on I had it checked with the plug in at the bottom of the dash and it came up with a code p0161 and it's not overheating but the heater the Overflow bottle is Filling up gauge doesn't go hot but it's not cold either I'm just wondering if that's the thermostat or is it a sensor
Would this apply to an 05 Jeep GC as well? My Jeep is overheating with a full coolant reservoir, little to no heat for a while in the cab, and the hoses coming from the radiator have a significant difference in temperature feel. At this point I’m stumped on changing a water pump, thermostat, or acknowledging I may have a cracked head.
I have a late 88 YJ 2.5 with a single point EFI. I have the rear block mounted temp to gauge sensor but I cant see where the temp to ECU is? The stat housing has the sensor on it but it's not connected to anything and there is no cable lying unused in the engine bay. How does my little 2.5 know how hot it is?? Madness!!!
Hey Dale,, I would like to know if you can tell me something, or possibly do a test for me and let me know the results, I have been trying to figure out a misfire/ engine surging issue with my 1995 ZJ with the 4.0 engine. And sin😮ce you have a jeep with a OBD 1 ECM. It should be similar. When I test all of the sensors for reference Circuit voltage, With the Key On and the Engine Off , I get steady Voltage readings, Except for when I connect a volt meter to the Two wires for the coolant temperature sensor circuit that is on the thermostat housing, The voltage fluctuates between around 4 to 5 volts At all different readings. Instead of being a steady reading of 5 volts. I have tested Everything possible, and it is the ECM that is giving these readings. I also tried another ECM from a salvage yard and it does the same thing. So I am wondering if I have two ECMs that have issues. Or are they both doing what they are supposed to. And is the misfire being caused by something else. Since you are good at figuring things out, and you like to learn, I thought I would ask you. And if you make a video about it you could maybe help out some other people that have jeeps with the OBD 1 ECM System. Thank you, Tim from Wisconsin.
Thanks. Now I have a big Q for u, my 2013 B7 Passat 2.0Tdi wont be worm! The gauge still at lowest point when The car is on for 20-3min but When I drive for more than 15minutes it goes up to like 50°C. Not 90° like it should, and When I start using The heater inside The car, The gauge drops to lowest point again.....btw I live in sweden and its - 15 outside. Any ideal what this should be? Ive change The thermostat. Without any luck. Thnx
2015 jeep Patriot.. leaks coolant.. 2wants to stall while driving.. it will cut out.. replaced thermostat 2 times n didn't help changed plugs all that. Still having roblem Help
In 1:27 safety rules first and i really like it!!!Watchout the rotating parts if your wear a tie (or even anything else as a scarf,a piece of fur around the neck or a x-large golden neck chain if you are a rapper).Worst of these kinds of accidents happen night with cold while being as a sharp dressed man.
My 91 Eldorado fans only work from the fuse with a direct line to the fan which keeps them on all the time when I’m driving. I have a new radiator and thermostat. Hoses are being replaced. And checked. Could it be the sensor as separate from the new thermostat, or Maybe the cooling fan controller because my compressor shut off because of lack of refrigerant. Or could it be the temperature sending unit like you’re showing?
Ive got a 2012 Chrysler 200 3.6. it's overheating. I've replaced the water pump, oil cooler, thermostat, hoses. I replaced the radiator about 3 yrs ago. after replacing these parts, it's still overheating but doesn't start overheating until I've been on freeway for about 15 min. only thing I can thing of is the radiator needs replacing. it's the only thing left. I have no leaks at all and no water in my oil . any ideas what it is. I only have a coolant reservoir cap , not a radiator cap and I replaced it as well. any help you can give me?
I thought it was the water pump on the reason why my car was overheating but when I squeezed the hoses All of them, they were solid Rock and the hoses were hot. But once I left the car sit out for a few hours I tried to squeeze those hoses again but as usual they were cold from sitting out for a while but now I can actually squeeze it it's not solid rock no more. There is no visible leaks. My car is overheating but it has plenty of coolant. And based on squeezing the hoses at hot and cold I'm assuming that's circulating. I replaced the engine coolant temperature sensor as well as the cooling fan. My car only has one cooling fan. And The fan only turns on when AC or heater is on. But when the HVAC system is off the fans do not turn on at all. I replaced the ECT sensor and thermostat. But even when the AC's on it I can still see smoke coming from the engine but if I put my foot on the gas while idling the needle goes down back to the middle but smokes coming from the engine and it smells like oil but there's also no visible oil leaks. I don't know what else is wrong with this car.
I can't find a leak anywhere or where it's burning radiator fluid, both my fans are working, and the thermostats seem to be working, my hoses have pressure and heat, but about once every two weeks or once a month or once a week the car will just randomly overheat all the fluid leaves the radiator and goes to the reservoir but doesn't go back into the radiator so you have to take the cap off fill it back up in the radiator and go again do you know what this problem may be? Thanks in advance
I' have a jeep commander 06' and its saying i have low trans fluid and one of the sensors is bad. The coolant is going through fast, but no overheating,
What if it never overheats. But, when I'm Sitting in the park it will blow warm air and get to warm temp. However, when I go down the highway my Temperature gauge goes down and it blows colder only ?
Thanks for the video. Do you know if there are two temperature sensors on 2016 rubicon? Replaced the one on driver side down on the bottom of the block. I don’t see a second one. Wish I had seen video prior to doing work regarding the flow of water when thermostat opens after warming. May have avoided changing that. Oh well over a 100k probably needed it anyway 😂
but this video was super helpful. Few days ago I found out it was the Sensor towards the rear of the block. I have the 2.5L and I dont haver the sensor thar goes to the actual thermostat
I change both thermostat and temp sensor on a 2014 durango rt and still doing the same only on 40° below weather. FYI I bought an after market stat!!!! And I think the sensor too! And fan turns on crazy high if I'm in a Incline but if I reverse and park it fan turns on only when needed. Same as parking at level ground turns on when needed. Any help?
Wondering if you could help me out new 2000 jeep grand cherokee inline 6 bout it and first few days were great buy today and yesterday started to have problems I think I bought someone's falling apart jeep my list of problems are alot Hatch won't open Engine runs hot causing it to not start on hot days Needs new fuel pump As well as front axles and rear axles I love my jeep tho it's awesome I just don't know where to go to look at videos or see what I need to do.
hey i gotta question about jeeps, i have a 93 zj 4.0, and i’ve done a new radiator, new hoses, water pump, 180 degree thermostat, my clutch fan is fine, but the block is a little rusty. any tips?
In My Car From the last month I am facing weired issues: - Fuel Tank Got Shrinked Which caused wrong fuel indication. After installing a new Tank i am seeing whenever I open my fuel tank cap, air vacuum releases. - Another problem is. My temperature gauge is going 1/4 only. 2 months ago I serviced this car. Oil change, Oil Filter change, Air filter change, Installed thermostat which was not installed before, After servicing I ran 150kms. Everything ran fine, But now I am facing these two issue. Steps I have taken : Checked temperature guage by grounding it. It works fine. So I installed new temperature sensor. But same thing happening.
I have a 2021 Jeep Cherokee latitude and the engine is different from the one you displayed I would like to know where the sunset on the Jeep Cherokee 2021 and how do you get to it to replace it
My manual temp gauge has stopped working but my engine seems to run at a normal temperature and does not over heat even though I haven't checked the thermo. Is it a very good possibility the gauge is the only thing bad? Oh, also there are no leaks. I'm guessing the manual gauge is about 10 to 15 years old.
Hello. I have a YJ-95. Driving the car, I got eventually the check engine turned on. If I turn off the YJ and restart it, the check engine is turned off and it doesn’t appear again at least for the rest of that day. The fault code I get is the 52: oxygen sensor - rich condition indicated. Time ago, I changed the oxygen sensor. At the beginning it got better, but it started again. I found in other video that other reason to get a rich air/fuel mixture could be driving the car in a wrong temperature condition. I checked that the temperature gauge shows a low temperature. Thanks your video I checked out that the coolant temperature sending unit is the one that is shown in the gauge and it has an intermittent false contact. Do you have the part number of this temperature sensor? Do you think this sensor could affect the rich air/fuel mixture or what else could I check? Thanks
Okay I have a 99 Expedition when I first start the vehicle the temperature gauge is in the cold position but it immediately goes to normal operating temperature. It doesn't move too much above that and it never gets into the overheating range my vehicle is never overheated and I recently flushed and filled the cooling system. So is the gauge faulty or the sending unit? Thanks
My gauge reads way too low and when feeling the hoses it's my top radiator hose that heats up not the hose going to my heater core. Is it my thermostat? Thanks, Tommy
Hey good video I just replaced water pump and thermostat on my 95 yj and my temp gauge keeps moving up and down between 210 and the next lower hashmark got any ideas also no leaks
Do I really have to wait 24 hours for cure time on the permatex I added to the thermostat gasket to make sure it stays in place on the thermostat housing? It says wait 24 hours before adding coolant.
I have an 04 jeep grand Cherokee that the blower motor went out so instead of getting a new one I installed a clutch fan which seemed to work for a while. Now I'm have more over heating issues. Think it could be a thermostat issue?
Hello mate.i got mercedes a class 170 ,2005..my car blow air but dont give warm air..what i can do?all works before to i go in holliday, when i comeback give low warm air,but now it stop give warn air inside the cabin..
MECHANIC replaced Radiator, Thermostat and dirty air filter ......Jeep still overheating!!! I know I went to a bad mechanic but I dont know whats wrong with Jeep. Any ideas? The hoses are extremely hot with only a very short, less than a mile drive. Thanks!!
helpful video Here's an odd question. I get okay heat. I have 2000 jeep tj... new rad, no leaks and have noticed when I drive long distances or faster for long periods I loose the heat I had before . My heater core might be backed up but sometimes I get good heat for a bit and then I dont. I have pump by hand the heater hoses and sometimes I get the heat back again for a bit. I'm thinking I should do it myself Tempeture gauge switch ????
Love your channel!!! Can you do a video on replacing motor mounts? I have a 95 yj. I did the drivers side, but the passenger side looks a little intimidating!!
I would like to install an electric fan on my 95 yj jeep to eliminate the motor mounted fan. What would you recommend for activating the relay for running the fan. I know they normally use a temperature activated switch but where would you recommend mounting it.
I have a Jeep Liberty 2010 V6. The engine temp stays normal on the dashboard but the heater to heat the interior of the vehicle does not get that hot. Would this be a thermostat issue?
Doesn't sound like a thermostat issue. Sounds like your engine is operating at normal temperature, so your thermostat should be working ok. sounds like a heater core issue to me.
low on coolant. you must top off coolant through the 8mm hex plug on the right hand side of your engine looking down from the front bumper standing under the open hood.
Question to you or anyone read this I swap my engine on my Jeep I have a 92 I got a motor less miles of a 97 I do no have the temperature sending unit back of the block is ther a way I can steal the signal of the temp sensor so my gauge can work or what can I do ??
I have a Jeep and was told my thermostat not warming recently my jeep running rough could it be my thermostat? By the way i have 207332 miles love my jeep help!
i know this is a old vid, but id glady trade u my 07 3.8 jeep motor for that wonderfull beast of a 4.0 u got anyday.....my last 4.0 in my GC i had 331k ( about 5k of that was trail miles)on it and it ran like a top...loved that motor...except that damn oil filter adapter they used.......
My car heat but not for 100% but the water temperature gauge only show 60 or max 70 degree when I drive 75 miles per hour. Bad thermostat or temperature sensor?
My Fan is Not coming on, the Heat Works Hot, But the Temperature Will Overheat Wondering if it's the Sencor on the Housing Not Signaling the Fan to come on, ?
I keep getting a coolant temperature high and I replaced the coolant temperature sensor 3 times and I still get the read it and check engine light I was wondering if you can help me figure this out . OK I'm explain it in my 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4 wheel drive automatic 6 cylinder I'm getting a check engine light staden coolant temperature high replaced the sensor and erase the code then the light came on . Just happened 3 more times replaced with new sensors and it continues to give me problems and the light is still on does the thermostat or any other part causing this problem if you have any ideas I'd appreciate the feedback thank you thumbs up
Sold my YJ a few months ago , this video reminds me of how simple Jeeps used to be. Great video as usual!

Great info on the "heater" trick. If the heat coming out of your vents in the cab isn't HOT after the engine has been operating for awhile, check the thermostat and radiator hoses for temperature differences. If they are about the same, most likely the thermostat is stuck OPEN. This is the first thing I ask customers, "Does the heat coming out of your vents seem warm or hot?"
Also forgot to mention the tid-bit about the radiator fan. If the engine is up at operating temperature and the thermostat opens but the temperature isn't decreasing, the computer will have the radiator fan operate. If the fan doesn't work, then that's another path to troubleshoot.
Two different options here if the thermostat is GOOD so you are looking at the radiator fan now:
1) If the engine is running cold, verify the fan isn't ON constantly.
"I have a little leak ill fix later" Sounds like me do great job on other people's cars but have my cars on the waiting list. Lol
Haha!
Maybe we need to throw a bottle in our glove box!
I overheated yesterday. This will help a great deal. Thanks man. I love my in line six. That thing loves to climb hills!
Awesome. Thank you!
@@JeepSolid now I'm trying to figure out how to drain the fluid without making a mess. I'm looking for a plug.
@@JeepSolid my cherokee has a sealed radiator. There's no cap.
May have to remove bottom hose.
Mine has been running cold...
Great video ! Saved me some cash and taught me how to do some of my own work as I never had tools or garage till now so Thanks man
I own a 2003 JGC WJ w/4.0 and it just pulled a code P1281 today.
Even a cheap gear clamp is preferable to any spring type.
.w.
Hi my car was overheating i fix cylinder head but still is overheating i changed themostat but still overheating can somehelp me
An excellent contribution - 'on point'. Goes to show that you can teach an 'old dog' new tricks - like the heater hose warming before the radiator hose to verify the status of the thermostat! Thank you. Lloyd, Queensland, Australia
His one for ya!!!
1994 YJ
Temp gauge went to zero! I replaced the thermostat, sensor at thermostat and rear sensor, replaced the fluid, replaced the pig tail at front sensor. Then the temperature gauge now goes to hot!!!! But system not overheating. No warm air either
Had heater core replaced. Car not running hot but keep hearing water circulating thru like a washing machine when it drains water.
I had a friend flush my engine and add liquid copper. So far the problem seems fixed
Thank you to show how simple is to chance a termostat
I always have to stop and think when you say drivers side or passenger side since we drive in the left here is New Zealand. But I like how the jeep uses a lot of metric fittings. I guess it’s got Japanese parts like the transmission being a Toyota unit.
Were you an MP? You made a statement in your video that made me think so.
My 97 Jeri Cherokee ac fan wont stop Running when i turn the car off. Replaced the relay in the fuse box that’s in the engine bay and the fan. Jeep doesn’t overheat and the heat is good. Replaced the thermostat when i changed the water pump and coolant.
I just replaced my thermostat and temp sensor and the temperature gauge is still not moving. Is it time to change the temp gauge itself at this point?
Same.. did you figure it out?
Nope
I'd replace it. It will help you make sure you don't overheat.
Hi great videos by the way!! 👍🏼 I have recently purchased a 1997 XJ Cherokee ( love it!!)
I have been towing with it this weekend, so working harder that normal, after switching off the engine water was coming out of the expansion vessel,
I have left it overnight, topped up the coolant and driven it to my garage and the temperature stayed at a nice 90°c Do you want this to be a long-term vehicle for us?
Doesn't the sensor on the thermostat housing control the electrical fan? My fan comes on when I unplug it (91 XJ 4.0)
Hello sir I’m see you’re video for jeep I have a question for you ,I have a jeep 4L but they have not temperature sending unit and what i do for now
Have you ever have a Jeep clutch blow fluid out the top and splatters fluid on the underside of the hood?
Nope. Did that happen to you?
Just bought my 2014 wrangler 4 door. When i first turn on the vehicle the third knob that controls air flow to floor or vents a/c blinks yellow for a min and won’t work. Then stops blinking and starts working. The check engine light came on and said it was a bad thermostat. Is this a bad thermostat? I’m going do the checks from your video tomorrow. Thanks
Said "So ...."38 times🤣 this is great I took a wrong turn and dont feel stable with your camera jitters but you are a good dude this video will help some people👍🇺🇲
Why do you need to change the sensor on some vehicles at time of installation of the thermostat?!??
It's a 'while I'm in there' change. The cost of the sensor is usually less than the trouble to have to go back and drain the coolant, and change it after the fact. Kind of like when you're replacing all the old, murky brake fluid when you're bleeding the brakes.
@@d.e.b.b5788 OK sounds good thanks
What are your thoughts on this. YJ ran fine at 210 degrees. I just did a flush of the radiator system. Now, when I turn the key to the first position when the engine is cold the temperature gage immediately jumps to the dash mark just passed 100° (120ish?) and I run warm at 230ish..I just replaced the rear sensor. Thoughts? Thanks in advance and appreciate your help.
I already replaced my thermostat, it was broken. But my jeep keeps running cool.. I’m always around 100-150. What else should I check?
Mine is doing the same thing even after new thermostat. Did you ever figure it out?
Hi, I have a 2013 traverse overheating...I first checked for leaks and could not find one. Old thermostat replaced looked like it did needed to be replqced but still as I drove temperature needle was moving above normal temp..no enginge light on dashboard so doubt it's the temp sensor..not sure what else to look for..any suggestions? Please help. Thank you..new subscriber.

Just replace it if it’s not the thermostat, it’s only $10-15
I like your Jeep so don’t get me wrong but for me that year Jeep looks best stock with no lift
Madness!!!
Hey Dale,, I would like to know if you can tell me something, or possibly do a test for me and let me know the results,
I have been trying to figure out a misfire/ engine surging issue with my 1995 ZJ with the 4.0 engine. And sin😮ce you have a jeep with a OBD 1 ECM.
It should be similar.
When I test all of the sensors for reference Circuit voltage,
With the Key On and the Engine Off , I get steady Voltage readings,
Except for when I connect a volt meter to the Two wires for the coolant temperature sensor circuit that is on the thermostat housing,
The voltage fluctuates between around 4 to 5 volts
At all different readings.
Thank you,
Tim from Wisconsin.

Would the cooling temperature sensor being bad stop the fan from working.
The coolant is going through fast, but no overheating,
Any recommendations?

Thanks for the video. Do you know if there are two temperature sensors on 2016 rubicon? Replaced the one on driver side down on the bottom of the block. I don’t see a second one. Wish I had seen video prior to doing work regarding the flow of water when thermostat opens after warming. May have avoided changing that. Oh well over a 100k probably needed it anyway 😂
but this video was super helpful. Few days ago I found out it was the Sensor towards the rear of the block. I have the 2.5L and I dont haver the sensor thar goes to the actual thermostat
Ah, video was a day late for ya. Glad you got it figured out.
What about always running cold? I have the 195° thermostat but it's always running about 170°
I change both thermostat and temp sensor on a 2014 durango rt and still doing the same only on 40° below weather. FYI I bought an after market stat!!!! And I think the sensor too! And fan turns on crazy high if I'm in a Incline but if I reverse and park it fan turns on only when needed. Same as parking at level ground turns on when needed. Any help?

- Another problem is. My temperature gauge is going 1/4 only.
2 months ago I serviced this car.
Oil change, Oil Filter change, Air filter change, Installed thermostat which was not installed before,
After servicing I ran 150kms. Everything ran fine,
But now I am facing these two issue.
Steps I have taken
: Checked temperature guage by grounding it. It works fine.
So I installed new temperature sensor.
But same thing happening.
I have a 2021 Jeep Cherokee latitude and the engine is different from the one you displayed I would like to know where the sunset on the Jeep Cherokee 2021 and how do you get to it to replace it
I am still interested in how to replace the temperature sensor in a 2021 Jeep Cherokee latitude 21 model
I have an 03 4.0 and cannot find my sending unit in the back area of valve cover. Can't find it at all
Could the overheating be caused by the AC unit?
My manual temp gauge has stopped working but my engine seems to run at a normal temperature and does not over heat even though I haven't checked the thermo. Is it a very good possibility the gauge is the only thing bad? Oh, also there are no leaks. I'm guessing the manual gauge is about 10 to 15 years old.
Can a thermostat be removed with the shroud on? I am acquiring about a 1996 jeep Cherokee.
Yes. It can
@@JeepSolid Do we need to take the belt off? Or is there a way to leave belt and fan bbn on also?
Thanks,
Tommy
Hey good video I just replaced water pump and thermostat on my 95 yj and my temp gauge keeps moving up and down between 210 and the next lower hashmark got any ideas also no leaks
Do I really have to wait 24 hours for cure time on the permatex I added to the thermostat gasket to make sure it stays in place on the thermostat housing? It says wait 24 hours before adding coolant.
Yeah. If you do too early, it will leak. At least that's my experience
I'll be removing the motor on my project 92 yj soon. That may help

Kindly may you do the same for Jeep grand Cherokee 2001 v8
They’re easy. Get a service jack and a wood block. Jack and support the engine by the oil pan drain bolt side.
I would like to install an electric fan on my 95 yj jeep to eliminate the motor mounted fan. What would you recommend for activating the relay for running the fan. I know they normally use a temperature activated switch but where would you recommend mounting it.
Not sure... I'd have to look into that. Haven't tackled that one yet.
Ok but how do you test the sensor or sending unit?
i know this is a old vid, but id glady trade u my 07 3.8 jeep motor for that wonderfull beast of a 4.0 u got anyday.....my last 4.0 in my GC i had 331k ( about 5k of that was trail miles)on it and it ran like a top...loved that motor...except that damn oil filter adapter they used.......
My car heat but not for 100% but the water temperature gauge only show 60 or max 70 degree when I drive 75 miles per hour. Bad thermostat or temperature sensor?
By chance can the temp sensor that goes into the thermostat housing be turned into the sending sensor?
87 toyota pickup replaced ENTIRE COOLING System and still goes to almost white top line and then back to normal operating temp what am i missing????
