is my favourite piece of dialogue
Most memorable Villian Monologue of all time - "From:....... Korean!" (villian runs away)
Nintendo Maple Story games?! Awww. I kinda wish we could've gotten them
Yee
i would play the s&%t out of those games
Pass
the Maple *Story* was never really good. it wouldnt be very fun playing offline. this game had charm because of its online community and nostalgic 2D environment
I own the first one but could never read the words so this is awesome.
Penguin: "Korean" *jumps into a hole* Best part of the video right there
I have you know I don't always lean on my keyboard.....................
There's more to releasing a game in a different region than just translating it. You have to consider the cost of marketing, distribution, and customer support.
Marketing and customer support technically aren't needed, though.

Hatch from maple story ds.
"Korean"
-Fugitive, Maplestory DS
They're using a fan-translation. I ended up playing an unfinished fan-translation on an Action Replay as a teen, but I decided to go with the Japanese version since I was already able to read it and it was more complete than the fan translation.
The 3DS title's combat animations look flippin' amazing. A shame we didn't get it here in the West.
We could always use more beautifully animated sprite-based games on modern consoles.
Someone made an english patch, but you need a modded 3DS or citra to play it.
0:55 FYI, that's just some of the animated cutscenes in the game. The actual Maplestory anime looks nothing like that.
MapleStory remains to have one of the best soundtracks in gaming; I will be 80 years old listening to it ;D
literally the most underrated soundtrack
Also because it is 24 hours long and still expanding. With so many towns in different settings it's one of the most diverse soundtracks.
I'd literally open up the game and just have the title music going in the background. I'd even rate it a step higher than yoshi's island, one of my favorite soundtracks ever.
@@zuludude2 the title song now only reminds me of losing connection, forgetting your password and getting banned for no apparent reason. Since that's when I got to hear its full 3 minutes. There's literally a moment in the song where the "you should have logged in by now" stress kicks in.
Leafre's music will forever play in my mind
"When asked about the only playable character's gender, Hong Sung-Joon, the team leader, simply stated that the character is pretty and cute."
Flawless logic. Bless you, Hong Sung-Joon, you glorious bastard.
Couldn't have said it better myself.
The title says "Maplestory: The Girl of Destiny" so does that mean the title of the game is assuming the MCs gender?
Those sprites.
The 3ds version looks awesome! I wish Maple story 2 went with that look instead of the 3d look.
i always thought what gave the game its appeal was its 2D environment. every other mmo, especially at the time, were mature 3D worlds, maplestory broke the mold by being a big 2D world designed for a younger audience
Easier to scale up 3D graphics than 2D graphics, the fact that the first game is in 2D is apparently why it never got upscaled to HD.
I think that reason is pure BS myself but due to limited knowledge on the subject, I'm not in a position to argue it.
MapleStory2 is alright, but there's not really a lot to do in the over-world. If they could somehow make a 3d and 8 bit, that would be so sickk.
**You’re friggin dead to me**
SIMIFU nah the ds version was epic. The 3ds version is based off of nothing. The ds version is actually based off of MapleStory the comic. I’m korean so I always read comic MapleStory. The characters in the ds game are the main characters of the comic MapleStory, so yeah.
I made a group of truly memorable friends from San Francisco back in the day when I played Maple Story for hours on end. Although I was on the East Coast, we always found time to chat and play after school and weekends. Coincidentally they went to the same high school as my former supervisor and her brother during the years he attended that school! Looking back at it and every other memorable time in my life, it wasn't the smooth game play and flashy animations that got me addicted, it was knowing that I could log on and make friends to chill out with. These days, I just don't feel the same way playing video games. Perhaps I simply grew out of it.
The early mmo craze came out of the fact that the internet was still newish, and people loved just talking to others around the world. The medium of a different world where you go to talk and hang out with friends was what enticed people to Maplestory and many other games. As time went on the gaming market simply grew away from that, Social media and cell phones made communication easier and people got used to the idea that they can talk to others miles away. People don't tend to grow out of what they enjoyed from their childhood, the world just evolves over time to something else.
Yay awesome episode!! I have always been curious about the ds and 3ds releases so this was super informative. I've been playing Maplestory for a long time and it makes me very happy whenever I see content like this pop up on my feed. >u
I love this game's soundtrack and visuals. I was obsessed with this game as a kid, still gives me so much nostalgia.
It's strange how this game also marked my childhood of a brazilian kid haha
I was utterly *addicted* to MapleStory back in the day. I remember grinding my Assassin up to Hermit at zombies... I was getting like 10% of a level an hour grinding. Then when you would die, you would lose a good 30 minutes of grinding, 4 or 5% of your exp. This was back in probably 2005 or so, back when there were only a handful of classes, 3rd jobs, and Ludi was the only PQ. Since then, there's all these new classes and you can level up to lvl 70 in a week or two of casual playing. I played Maple 2 when it released and it was pretty fun, but those kind of games are not for me anymore. I remember hearing about the DS Maple, but there wasn't any way for me to play it in English at the time. Maybe I'll try out that 3DS version sometime.
Thanks for the nostalgia, DYK.
I played around that time too, but I had such a bad internet and was a terrible english speaker so I didn't get too far but I do remember how difficult it was to level up, it could take me hours to level up and I wasn't very well equipped so everything killed me too fast hahahahaha
I wonder if going back to the current official server is worth it or if I should look for a private old school server
The world record for leveling from 10-200 is just 1 second short of 19 minutes.
If you weren't a thief you didnt invest jn the luk stat so you lost 10% when you died so basically an hour lost
46 classes right now.... f$%£ me sideways and yet whenever i return to work on them until i get bored a friend of mine still plays and she got them all at least 200...
Talk about dedication!
@@Rentorock It that with or w/out Cash Shop buffs and 2x times?
Maple Story DS: Duwang Edition
*chew*
Who are you? Who in the *FACE* are you?
I know about a MapleStory that happened in Maple Treeway.
Oh, wait, wrong franchise.
Xd
HOLY that Maple OST at the ending really slapped me hard with nostalgia
"Anyway let's go spend 13 hours straight grinding to level 10"
It wasn't thaaat bad
...But I felt that anyways
Well, 3/4 of that time was spent doing literally nothing with your friends...
MapleStory really gives me a feeling of nostalgia I haven't had with other games. Between gameplay, music, etc. So much stuff worked really harmoniously in that game. Great memories with real life friends and many people I've met in-game.
Fun fact: The playable characters in MapleStory DS are actually the artwork of the original classes in the original pre-Bing Bang MapleStory before the Pirate class were available. A long time ago.
I played the original MapleStory DS in Korean on my R4 growing up, since my dad knew I loved MapleStory
Your dad sounds awesome.
Moira Palace Thanks man! He’s been a gamer since the Atari days so he knows a few things he’s picked up upon over the course of over three decades
Whenever I hear that BGM I get horrible flashbacks. I wasted a big part of my life in that game.
Not wasted if you enjoyed your time
Wait until you hear the new BGM
Same omg, and wasted money....
Great video! Thank you for this.
Nice video, I have good memories of playing Maple Story DS and Jump Ultima Start while figuring out with guides and faqs how to proceed in the game whenever I got stuck xD
Oh man. The moment I saw Maplestory in the thumbnail and hearing that classic login theme had all the memories of me being a kid playing the game just came flooding back in.
*MapleStory isnone of those games*
That never gets old
So much nostalgia in this episode since I'm an old Maple Story player that started with version 0.33 of the PC game
You guys really have to play Maplestory DS the mystery of characters and the interaction eachother makes the story so good.
Love GBATemp, years ago I learned how to mod my Wii before it was so easy.
Dead Baron weird flex but ok
Fucking Nice.
Maplestory DS was a well hidden gem, i played a translated copy on a flash card for my ds and 100% all four story lines, it has the same game play and feel as the pc version and to any curious fans i'd recommend it for the nostalgia trip
So it is really grindy then?
@@JarlBarbossa If you 100% it like I did, getting all cards, skills, and equipment, yes very grindy, though if you just play through the story lines its not grindy at all
I love these videos guys!
This whole video gave me a nostalgia trip
i was AFK in maplestory while looking through my youtube subscriptions and saw that this video was uploaded
Same, just finished dailies and was relaxing
Brilliant way to show patreon's names!
I forgot how adorable this game looks...even the enemies are cute!
Not as cute as rabites though 💕
Rabites are life
*Rabite bounce*
Rabites raid!
o: I think you're mistaken...because Goombas are clearly cuter! -3-
Rabites are definitely up there on the cuteness spectrum.
Ah Maple Story i remember back in rhe day rushing from school and turning on my PC chatting with my friends such fond memories.
Some of these patreon names have been big enough funders to get a credit for so long they seem like legend now
When i was a kid they used to sell maple story comic books and I used to read em so much
I see these often in Book Off, might pick them up
To bad we didn't get those games outside of Asia they look fun👀😔
Ya
*Too bad
Okay, that patreon ending was actually pretty great this time
My god the music. So much nostalgia
As someone who loves Maplestory and played a ton back in the day and even sometimes now... I wanted these for the longest time but they never came :c I waited for a US release but it just never came. The title screen song just brings back so many memories and so much nostalgia. Such a great game even with all the mtx. Also the books for skills is pretty close to how it used to be back in the day for mastery books. Had to find the exact book for each skill, though now its just any mastery book for 4th job skills.
I remember hearing about maplestory for the DS from something. I always thought it would've been amazing to have it as a portable title. I never got super high leveled or super into it but it was fun.
I actually had this on an Action Replay card as a kid. It was a lot of fun.
I only knew about maple story through the comic books! My grandma took me to buddhist gatherings, where they had like clubs for kids. The comic books followed the characters of the DS game.
I didn't know it had comics! That's a sweet story, moonkitty1
I feel the dialogue in the Patreon bit. God, MapleStory was sooooo grindy, but I loved it to death.
What is even more incredible is the fact that i play maplestory to this date, i love the changes and prob will try one of those translations eventually
I haven't played since maybe 2008 or so. What's it like these days? Last time I played Maple Rangers costumes had only been out a few months
@@TehSymbiote Its the core Maplestory feeling, classic mmo from korea, grindy AF, but now theres more than 40 classes, 5th job, game feels like a diabloesk kinda gameplay, more damage, more power, more destruction, screen cleaning attacks, hypers and whatnot, also Reboot servers are non p2w, but also slow to progress and items are locked to a single character, no trading avaiable. Personaly i keep switching between reboot and pserver (up to date), since private servers are less grindy.
Last I played the OG, I felt no sense in community. I blew through leveling up to 145 or so in only a week or two and then got bored of it. All the PQs are dead, some monster cards are impossible to get, there's way more min-maxing, there's an idiotic amount of ways to boost stats and items, and a lot more I'm forgetting.
I remember seeing the DS game when it came out and I was way too into MS at the time. Was waiting hopefully for it to come to NA, of course... it never did.
And now I wanna play Maplestory again.
Dang, that 3DS Maple Story game looks like it would be fun.
Is fun. The Gameplay is fun and the music is charming
Maplestory took 10+ years of my life... and id never wish to have it back. Some of my best memories are in that game. I miss my old guild :(
i listen to soundtrack on my phone to this day
man both these games sound dope as hell too bad we never got them what a shame
These games look beautiful!
I miss the original maplestory. The music was so frickin good. Sleepywood always creeped the hell out of me with its music.
Big bang made the base game so easy.
Anyone remember the ios game from 2010?
I played it back when Aqua Road hasnt even released yet and it took forever to level up back then until Big Bang came along. You can easily max your level (200 at the time) in just two days.
@@hukesama8389 I actually prefer MS before the big bang patch. Made the accomplishment of getting to a high level soooo satisfying
@@Bigdaddymittens ikr. I remembered the time that i finally got to Third Job after playing for so long (back then only had the weekends off from school). But one thing i never like about MS was the marketplace. How the hell do you grind that much money to buy all these OP equipment people made from curse scrolls or cash items.
Omg it’s been years since I saw that game
Ahh maplestory. Met a 10 (11 now I think?) year long friend on there.
so much nostalgia
What is this Sorcery? 3 DS Videos in a row? Most have forgotten about the DS. Its nice to see that at least you still remember it. There are so many awesome DS Games. But nobody talks about them if its not Mario Pokemon Zelda or Kirby
Is Maple Story still a thing in PC? I know it's now on smartphone...
I remember trying to download the og Maplestory on my ds!
Can you do an episode on the Japan-only Wizardry games or the 7th Dragon series?
I genuinely didn't know what this was until this very second
Sudden appearance of robots after something came out of the protagonist head?
It’s a pretty fooly cooly kinda thing
As someone who owns both of these games, I would like to thank you for being the single other person Im aware of who knows these exist.
Any chance you could do a region locked of Last Ranker? It's a pretty good JRPG from Capcom on the PSP that sadly never had a full fan translation because it's not really popular outside Japan.
Man, I'm not even a fan of Maple Story, but this 3DS game looks AWESOME. Would've loved to play it.
Never knew Maplestory had a DS and 3DS game. The Girl of Destiny actually looks really fun, I might have to give it a look if I can find a copy anywhere.
But ds has better story to be honest
3ds version was kinda weak
Wait... There was a Maple Story Anime?!?
I think I just found a new project to binge.
'comic maplestory' the manhwa is one of THE most popular manhwa for kids in South Korea
oh man.. i want to play Girl of Destiny now
OMG I remember playing the DS game when I was really young, buuuuuuuuuuut through some...
Shady methods... *looks at very old R4 game card*
Is it bad that I almost cried when I heard the music kick in?
"Let's spend 13 hours grinding to level 10" Somebody's feeling a bit of PTSD there, eh?
implying that we didn't enjoy the stress and suffering back then? blasphemy!
AYYYY FINALLY MAPLESTORGY ACKNOWLEDGEMENT ON A BIG CHANNEL
Yoo thats OSM! I play too haha
I've always said, if they just took MapleStory and put it as a single-player version on the 3DS (or now the Switch) with the same classes, gameplay and story, designed to be a bit quicker without microtransactions, it would probably be one of my most-played games.
i feel this way about a few MMOs honestly, they’d make for great singleplayer games if they were just way less grindy and didn’t have microtransactions to get any of the cool stuff
There's also an extremely long korean comic book series
Up to book 40 was so good but the rest is so trash
This defined you as casual before most people had heard of bejeweled.
I tried to buy this back in the day and it was always sold out
Wow, the second game actually looks pretty decent. The pixel art, movement controls and everything else seems like a huge improvement on a formula that was already numbingly simple even before removing the multiplayer online element.
I was actually playing maplestory as this video was uploaded which is why i didn't see the notice in time. What are the odds?
Did we get that weird Ragnarok DS game? Was it any good?
I wish I knew how I could play the other game. Loved playing the PC game as a kid and was always curious about playing the DS game. (Only now of watching this video did I learn of the 3DS game)
I want more maplestory...
Ahh Maplestory...
Grinding: The Game
So how can you play the 3DS one?
I had and R4 so I had access to the game at because of the language barrier there is a point where it became ridiculous to progress
Why is there footage of a MapleStory private server in this video, though?
Man, I really wanna try that 3DS game now. I'm not that big on emulators, but if it's the only way I can play it in English...
Damn that 3DS one looked fun
You make it sound like MapleStory online is also not playable. I know you mentioned it is still being played today but it sounded so distant and nostalgic.
well the game is entirely different nowadays...
Wait a second... I’m still playing maplestory over 8 years later ; _ ;
This always made me and my brother so mad we really wanted maplestory ds
I actually never heard of any Maple Story games, so learning about this game should be quite interesting! 😄😁👍
The game looks so chibi and adorable! 😊😄😁👍
There were many spent allowances on this game. I even got married at one point lol lots of good memories with this one.
Imagine if we get Mugi or however you spell her name from the second MapleStory he discussed as a Smash Bros game and boom we get a Maple Story for Switch
Why didnt we get this
the 3ds game looks very cool
