Design Cinema - EP 99 - Sketching with Photos

  • Sketching is a process most designers use in the beginning stages of a project. It’s one of the fastest methods for idea exploration. With access to new media, we can further enhance this approach.
Google Image Search, together with Pinterest, Flickr, etc., give us instant access to thousands of images. Instead of merely collecting these images for reference, we can use them directly in a technique I’d like to call, “sketching with photos.”
Unlike photo-bashing, these photos are not meant to appear in the final image. Instead, we use these photos to “sketch.” Combining this method together with traditional sketching can help you find inspiration and discover fresh design directions.

Feng I've been following you and the channel for 8-9 years approximately, I'm so happy for you and so proud to be part of the following :). When I started Following you, living from my art was just a dream. I'm now a teacher of an illustration school in Chile (I'm from down here), and work for Paizo (Pathfinder), Mitos y Leyendas TCG and others. Even though we work in slightly different industries, your strong discipline, down to earth approach and advice as always been an inspiration. Thank you. (I always recommend your channel to my bilingual students)

Hi Feng. When people ask me who is my favorite artist I tell them it’s you. I saw you on Attack of the Show like 13 or 14 years ago and have pursued art and design since then because I was so inspired. I’ve met other great artists and designers but your generosity puts you at the top. Thanks for posting and sharing.

I've been following him since the beginning of the year but this time I was REALLY impressed by the speed of which he can come up with incredibly original designs with just a handful of photographs. I knew he was a powerful artist since the first time I saw one of his videos but man this one... It's almost discouraging

First off thank you for the video,
This is a very interesting and very speedy way to bring an environment together without the 700+ years of environmental/ architectural knowledge to get a good idea. I was wondering would you say that this idea could also be applied to generating a photo sketch for characters also?

I've watched your videos since 2011. Big fan! First time commenting:
This video was great, but it might be even better if it could be recorded at 4K, since it seems you're using a 4K screen. With 4K tech getting cheaper, it's a good time to make the shift xD
    Cheers!

I was wondering, would Feng Zhu return to Star Wars if asked (unless I'm wrong and he already worked on the Disney movies)? I thought recent works like Valerian and Alita Battle Angel looked phenomenal design-wise (not sure how much input he had on them, but his design influence is still apparent in both), and I'd like to see another Star Wars movie with the same level of creativity

Can you do a video on how to draw with reference without just copying it? I know how to draw something by looking at it and copying it but how do artists use reference in their drawings that aren't just copies of the reference? This would be a fantastic video
