Design Cinema - EP 99 - Sketching with Photos
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 сер 2019
- Sketching is a process most designers use in the beginning stages of a project. It’s one of the fastest methods for idea exploration. With access to new media, we can further enhance this approach.
Google Image Search, together with Pinterest, Flickr, etc., give us instant access to thousands of images. Instead of merely collecting these images for reference, we can use them directly in a technique I’d like to call, “sketching with photos.”
Unlike photo-bashing, these photos are not meant to appear in the final image. Instead, we use these photos to “sketch.” Combining this method together with traditional sketching can help you find inspiration and discover fresh design directions.

Feng I've been following you and the channel for 8-9 years approximately, I'm so happy for you and so proud to be part of the following :). When I started Following you, living from my art was just a dream. I'm now a teacher of an illustration school in Chile (I'm from down here), and work for Paizo (Pathfinder), Mitos y Leyendas TCG and others. Even though we work in slightly different industries, your strong discipline, down to earth approach and advice as always been an inspiration. Thank you. (I always recommend your channel to my bilingual students)
Feng: "This thing is so ugly."
Also Feng: "Lets make it bigger so it eats up the page"
I love these videos
Hi Feng. When people ask me who is my favorite artist I tell them it’s you. I saw you on Attack of the Show like 13 or 14 years ago and have pursued art and design since then because I was so inspired. I’ve met other great artists and designers but your generosity puts you at the top. Thanks for posting and sharing.
I’ve never thought of using reference like that. Thank you so much, really appreciate you for all the knowledge you are sharing and the time and effort you are taking!
Holy heck. Next one is 100! Congrats Feng. These vidoes are so good
I would have loved to see you sketching out these. Also can't wait for episode 100 :)
I was looking forward to this new video!!! :D Hope you can upload the number 100 before the year ends
Thank you Feng. This really speeds up the design process and visual library building.
It's always a pleasure to see a new video! Thanks!
Thank you for sharing the priceless knowledge! This will forever change my work.
cant thank you enough man, this changes the whole game for me.
Ahhh thank you so much for this, I've constantly been having trouble with searching and especially USING reference for my portfolio projects
Thank you so much Feng for all the vital information you provide for us ! You are amazing !!
Amazing video as always! Im looking forward to using this technique to create some new designs! Cant wait to see episode 100!
Time sure flies! Thanks Feng, looking forward to no 100!
Thank you so much! This is sure to speed up sketching phase a whole lot :D Im sure it can be applied to any object really
Best video ever.... wow what a useful technique. Thank you feng for sharing your knowledge yet again. Awesome
A true fascinating process to show ideas! A wonderful tuto as usual Sir!
THE LEGEND IS BACK!!!!
Thanks! It's my B-day!
Thanks for the gift!
I’ve been watching since 2010 so i will celebrate my 10 year next year :P
Great video, nice to see you back again, I see you moved into another office again finally!
WOOOOOW this is an Amazing tip to think about the mood and the way we wan to to create
very interesting way to use references. I don't usually draw environment heavy things but I will use this technique for sure when I draw something like that
true inspiration and tight episodes bro!!
keep on !
Yesss! Feng is back!!
The industrial throne room would look SOOOO dope!
I want to see what he ends up sketching with those references
just came to leave my like, I'll come to watch it later
this is very useful. thank you so much. I will surely give it a try. thank you Sir
This is an excelent technique, my imagination is going wiiild
Very insightful process
This a great skill to have a producer
Thanks , really smart way to find inspiration , will you make a video with the final render from here ?
SUper thanks!
if anyone is still watching this, AI is a great tool to plan out ideas in this way
this is the new hope man
You have some amazing skills!!! I loved both the designs!
You must be new here
I've been following him since the beginning of the year but this time I was REALLY impressed by the speed of which he can come up with incredibly original designs with just a handful of photographs. I knew he was a powerful artist since the first time I saw one of his videos but man this one... It's almost discouraging
This reminds me to the "Puente de Triana" also from Eiffel :)
Could you do a tutorial on going from a rough sketch to a finished painting
There's a bunch in the channel. Look at older videos.
I learned this technique years ago from a client who sent me this type of mockup to try to explain better. It was an eyeopener. :D
Merci de nous avoir montrer le chemin sensei !!!
@@kaimikimitete7222 Good to know you existed. Thats very valuable information!
i have done this before when i was in study art courses...and i dont know this technique called as photo sketch :D
Yay !
First off thank you for the video,
This is a very interesting and very speedy way to bring an environment together without the 700+ years of environmental/ architectural knowledge to get a good idea. I was wondering would you say that this idea could also be applied to generating a photo sketch for characters also?
I was wondering the same thing when it came to this technique. So I tried it myself and I think it worked really well actually. I suggest people give it a try

Great app for a blink and cant draw like me ^^ perfect thanks
Oh wow ! What tactic do you use when searching for visual ref ?
thanks feng!
Wow, 10 whole episodes a year.
last time I did a project like rococo interior I also used a similar photo-sketch tech!
I've watched your videos since 2011. Big fan! First time commenting:
This video was great, but it might be even better if it could be recorded at 4K, since it seems you're using a 4K screen. With 4K tech getting cheaper, it's a good time to make the shift xD
Cheers!
I miss these bro.
Oh yea ! New video
If you load a file as a smart object into Photoshop, use right click->rasterize layer to make it into a normal image.
! ! ! H Y P E ! ! !
thank you so much for feeding our brains with your wisdom
are you this spontaneous in mix matching certain elements?
Amazin video but how am i going to sketch such complicated geometry like the floor of throne room- you paint over it?
Yay
sees fang pop up on screen --> i smile.
Happy centennial :) Nearly.
How about an update for people thinking about getting into the industry, things to consider, etc.
I was wondering, would Feng Zhu return to Star Wars if asked (unless I'm wrong and he already worked on the Disney movies)? I thought recent works like Valerian and Alita Battle Angel looked phenomenal design-wise (not sure how much input he had on them, but his design influence is still apparent in both), and I'd like to see another Star Wars movie with the same level of creativity
Woooo
Ep IV
pose apoptical! yes! he said it!
too bad you did not sketch at least one of the photosketches :( But nice Video anyway! Thanks Feng
yo yo yo~ one more to go though~
Can you do a video on how to draw with reference without just copying it? I know how to draw something by looking at it and copying it but how do artists use reference in their drawings that aren't just copies of the reference? This would be a fantastic video
i dont remember which video it was but he has done one explaing the best way to learn from reference and to understand what you are drawing and the forms of it rather than just copying,
it's a new hope, not return of the jedi
cant believe stockphoto bashing is industry standard
1st movie, A New Hope. Lol.
Where is the beginning, couse in episode one you start really weird?
I don't want to win the lottery, I want to win a free education at this school 😅😋
the video is awesome, i just hate anything related to kings and thrones, i rather make gore stuff, skulls and something like dead space and such.
Did u say magnificent 😂
"Medieval" structure, whilst looking at an obviously baroque structure...
