- Опубліковано 20 жов 2019
- The ability to communicate with hand-drawn sketches is a fundamental skill that all designers should possess. For episode 101, we bring the series back to its roots and focus on the basics of sketching.
This episode starts by separating various subject matters by drawing difficulty. Next, we take one of the easier subjects (tree roots), and breaks down the steps from initial rough layout to final presentation with line-weights and marker wash.
Finally, we share tips on best body position for sketching, wacom settings and Photoshop brush creation.
Hope you enjoy this episode.

Joining a thank you wagon. About 8 years ago at 25 I was struggling with my career and found your videos. They grabbed me and never let me away. I have switched my gears and enjoying drawing every day and it doesn't matter if it is work related or personal stuff it just keeps me going forward all thanks to you! I am also grateful that after so many years you are still giving away this valuable information to community. Greetings from Lithuania!
Hi, your comment struck me as relateable, since Im a 22 year old Industrial Design student. Im hoping you could tell me what kind of creative work you may be doing today? What did employers say they value in terms of sketching?
How did you switch gears and come to enjoy drawing every day?
Jonas Petrauskas same here bro. This guy souped me up to go buy a Wacom cintique 21ux which I still have today. My first Feng vid I downloaded was episode 4 and had to convert flash to view it on my computer.
Lol reading your post has actually inspired me as I am currently 25 and somewhat struggling with my career
@@MetricZero I just enjoy. Not that I am doing it everyday. But almost every evening before sleep. It is like meditation for me. Road was bumpy I left web design company. Started in a game company and it was closed. Then I had to get back to web design. But I didnt give up and was drawing every free minutw I had until I collected decent portfolio which led me to freelance contract in game industry as a 2D artist. And it just kept going. Now I am lead artist in a game company as a fulltime and enjoying it a lot.
You reach 100 episodes before the end of 2019 AAAAND we get another one as well so soon??? Feng you are spoiling us! THANK YOU!!!! :D
By far the most realistic, rational art advice I've come across, thank you.
Its soul crushingly honest. Well gotta go collect the pices and start drawing

No it's not

Because it's not. He's literally insulting like a person cannot use imagine but only reference and whining saying "it's hard" and then putting words in others and children's mouths.
"Don't make it up, use references" ~What make him the right to say that!? But then he goes ahead and draws a tree that's not reference knowing he said "Don't make it up". He seems to contradict himself than just throwing rude and insulting things.
Then he keeps claiming "It's really hard", "it's difficult. If you don't draw it correctly it'll definitely be off and you don't want it to be off because it's not drawn correctly".
I'm just another example of how much impact your lessons have on our lives. Changed carrier from army computer scientist into concept artist and than, I fell in love in game design (all in all it's just another set of problems to solve). All thanks to your Design Cinema series.
Now, after almost 9 years working for the gaming industrie, I'm very happy I listened to the advices you gave us. Thank you so much, Feng. Keep this live changing series going, for the new generation of aspiring artists! And if by any chance you visit south of Poland, drinks are on me ;) Cheers
feng this episode was amazing. thank you so much for taking the time to help us who can't get to your school. Im 45 years old and i've drawn all my life, but after studying and i mean studying your videos, taking notes and drawing relentlessly i'm seeing improvements in my own art. You've inspired me to try and change careers at this late stage in my life and i can't thank you enough. if i could meet you i'd shake your hand and buy you a drink sir.
After a long time of struggling and being totally disatisfied with my work I came back to your videos and heard you talking about going back to the basics and drawing a lot again, I actually started taking it to heart. Long story short, I've made great progress recently just by following your advice. Can't thank you enough
🤦
I was obsessed with consuming this series back when I was 14 and you first started it. I managed to come across these and I can definitely say you guided me not only in art, but in life. You introduced the idea of hunkering down and making art the priority over social life if I wanted progress and that mindset has made me blossom in everything I’ve done. I am turning 24 now and I thank you for the guidance
im in the same boat! I've changed career path completely but it gives me a lot of inspiration in life and other projects as well as drawing!
"No one really knows what a train looks like" - Feng Zhu 2019
lol
why is this so funny
yeah try draw one from memory :)))
"The art of art"
I guess Im randomly asking but does someone know a tool to log back into an Instagram account..?
I somehow lost the account password. I would appreciate any tips you can give me
I love basic videos, they really help me with my self education.
Been in the industry for several years now and still really appreciate 'back to basic' videos like this. Always good practice to plink at some fundamentals
I come back to this channel every once and a while for practice and to learn more about drawing (as a hobby), thank you so much for leaving these videos up.
Dear Feng, you're the greatest, my friend. I've been watching you for over ten years at this point. I've improved so much in that time from practice and inspiration from you. I've been pursuing my love of ZBrush and 3d for the past 15 years but perhaps one day I'll attend FZD School. Thank you very much. God bless.
I don't know how you existed all this time without me knowing... The insights you've provided are uncountable... So many eureka moments for me.
You've made me realize that I've been skipping far too many steps. I tend to overreach and try the hardest things to draw without realizing.
I come back to this every time I draw. Feng's words always help me calm down when I get anxious from drawing
The first time I saw a FDZ video was about 6 years ago, and his videos are like a holy bible to me. My art still isn't really great because I just haven't practiced enough, but every time I get "off the road" I come back to watch some videos and I remember what my goals were... Im so happy I found these videos and I hope they're here for a long time.
I just came to say thank you. I am 43 and grew up loving to draw. Skip forward many years, and losing confidence in art school, I started to loathe drawing. After having kids and having them ask me to draw all the time I really became interested in 'relearning' to draw again. To find that passion I used to have when I was a kid without all the head games of 'everything needing to be perfect'.
This video is the first I have seen of your videos and I am so glad I found it. it is exactly what I needed to see. I got some sketchbooks so I could just draw whatever - but I found I was getting to tight and detailed and just hating the results. Thanks to you and this video I feel like I found what I needed to see to get me going in the right direction. Thank you sincerely and i look forward to watching more. =D
I just found your channel, right at the beginning of my art journey and I'm SO excited to have such an invaluable resource. Wow, Ive learned so much in just 2 episodes, and these were mistakes I probably would have made for months or even years without knowing how to fix them so THANK YOU
Its always a good morning when I get to wake up and have my coffee while watching a new design cinema! Great video as always Feng
This was an excellent episode, reminded me of a lot of basics I was skimming over and helped me rethink a lot from posture to how I approach focal points and line weight.
Your vocabulary is amazing.
There's not a single cut in this video, and yet everything is so informative.
god this is amazing. i love this episode and 89. I always come back to them everytime i'm struggling with anything. like, i think most possible struggles and were talked already. it always makes me tuned and brings me new forces. This is very advanced psychologically, and it's very well made. I love You guys for this channel, please keep doing this thing, these videos. Share these amazing artists i found on this channel. This is the best possible channel to ACTUALLY learn drawing and drawing-related content. Thank You.
"Okay let me slow down" *guzzles coffee* :D
I feel so bullied
I must say - this is one of the best high quality content videos I have seen on these subjects, so very well explained, lots of useful tips and information, good advice for beginners like me and lots to take away and remember! Very well done and absolutely dead on - spot on - right on - time! Thank you very much for this! Subscribed!
Thank you SOSO much for continuing to post these videos, they are invaluable resources for me and have helped me 'just draw' like nobodies business. Your tips help not only on the technical side of this career path but also the mental, so thank you again! Forever in debt at the boost this series has given me :)
26:23 That top middle root is so awesome, its definitely making a skull like shape at the top towards the middle.
Thank you so much Feng! Looking forward to become a professional concept artist, and one day get a chance to meet and thank you in person for all these valuable information you have been sharing.
I was recommended to watch this video and make my foundamentals stronger if I really want to be able to make concept-art (or any art I guess) professionally. And oh God...this video is just like something I really needed!
Good to see there are professionals making quality content like this!
Hey man, just wanted to say thank you for uploading these, they give me the knowledge and the motivation to just keep going, im not an expert but ur advice has helped me to improve my drawing
Feng, I'm halfway through this video and so into it. Thank you for taking the time to make it and share your knowledge, something that is really going to stick with me is your line about "not sweating or being frustrated... you're probably doing something correct".
Hey Feng, thank you so much for doing these episodes! I learned so much from your approach and attitude. Back when I was working in architecture as a newly graduate, your videos were always played in the background when I was modeling an existing structure in 3D (less brain power needed). Slowly I realized how much love I had for the industry that you were in and decided to switch career. It had not been easy for years but always fun like you said it should. I also had tons of help from the online community. Now I am working in the video game industry :D All thanks to your videos! Please keep it up! Hopefully I can meet you some days!
This is absolutely brilliant. I’m not a young artist and not involved in gaming/films but still learning to draw. You’re a fantastic teacher, with a clear, accessible and patient teaching style. Thank you for this. Looking forward to the rest of the videos.
SSAO is screen space ambient Occlusion. Basically AO is applied on the whole screenspace instead of every object. Right term is just AO wich is Ambient Occlusion =) Great video again. Love those.
I imagine a lion teaching this episode to other lions, talking about how they would never notice any mistake done when drawing humans.
"You almost never see humans, and when you see them you usually eats them anyway."
What
@@yurialves9582 or "when you see them theyre probably hunting you"
What ever shroom you are on, I want some of it 🤣
No ur wrong lions aren't aggressive and rarely eat humans they can't anyways if they do they will throw up and when they are aggressive its prob someone hunting them there just defensive
Thank you!
I watched this video two years ago, in the middle of getting my arts degree... and it super helped? like, I now graduated as a top student in my group, wow. This just helped me so much to make my thoughts strait, to figure out the logic of sketching. I could never wrap my brains around how a good line should look like before hand.
Now I decidet to rewatch it, as I feel I can freshen up my memories, and lol... I remember being sooper into "speed paintind"... (thought it was just my adhd style), I forced myself to slow down and it helped too.
This thing basically changed my life, helped me to become more confident in my drawings and to know when to stop.
I will forever be obliged and thakful!
You videos about an hour long, but everytime I have the impression I've been watching only for 15-minutes. Your contents are both unique and amazing. If I'm going to enroll your course is not a matter off if, it's a matter of when. I've been looking at so many artist and so many different UA-cam videos for the past 10 years (including you), and for me you are simply the best fit for my style. I've been drawing for a very long time, but I really need to build a portfolio and learn to digital paint. This is precisely why I want to enroll at your school.
Thank you very much for putting such quality content. It is really next to nothing in my humble opinion.
firstly Thank you so much Feng for all the help and i think going over all the basics and starting over old stuffs like a repaint is a great idea ! The industry has evolved so does the methods in my sense !
It's so cool to have this high quality information at such a high amount for free. Thanks Feng!
All people aspiring to draw horses should learn from the absolute master of the art itself, author of amazing manga Kingdom - Yasuhisa Hara. No one can match his horse art :D
I love, how you explain everything so immaculate and very mature, very sober in a way. No romanticism, nothing, just hard work. Also, Intuos 3 is by far the best Wacom tablet ever. Only downside, the Cable can't be replaced but if you're not moving it around too much, it'll last for a long time. I luckily still have a spare one. Would buy an Intuos 3 any day over a newer version.
honestly I don't even comment on videos, but geezzz this is great I've been drawing for a while (mostly self thought) and these long form videos really fill in the gaps of knowledge I never knew or noticed before. Also anyone else watching this in 2020?
I just set and watched all of this video..!! Thank you for breaking down your Start to finish Sketching process..!! This really helped me out..!!
It really helps when a teacher explains the “Thought process” Thanks again for such a helpful video..!!
👊😎
This video totally shifted my perspective on concept art! This could very easily be the pivotal point that I need to become better. Thanks!
Can't wait for the next episodes. Great idea to start from the beginning!
This content is incredibly helpful. Thanks for putting this out there for free!
i ve beeen practicing the things that this video teaches for 2 weeks, it works!
Probably the best video on fundamentals of sketching ever made!
Today i learned when i started to sketching i began doing the hardest stuff and worked my way backwards
I’m sitting here thinking the exact same thing 😂. My dumbass has been frustrated trying to do portraits and draw the figure.
@@Whitfieldvideo I did the same, but I cannot complain much, I learned quite a lot hitting the wall.
Great video, I watched the entire episode. Loosening up my shoulder has helped my drawing accuracy, line flow and especially my endurance! Thank you.
Feng, thank you so much for sharing. Your lessons are so structured and clear. You are an awesome teacher.
I’m an absolute beginner, and I brew a coffee and sketch while I listen and it’s helping tons! The way you explain everything is very concise and easy to understand Please keep THESE COMING! 😁👍
same:)
One thing you mentioned in this vid hit a topic i keep thinking about alot.
"you won't get good if you don't enjoy the process"
I'm a professional game designer. i can code on an advanced level, Audio Design even the entire 3D stuff and lastly concept art...
my goal was to reach a point in my life where i can just create game scenes / prototypes entirely by my own without relying on someone else in relatively high quality.
I know i know...thats alot, but I think its possible. So art is not my primary craft. but it is still very important for my overall goal.
Art was always the hardest part for me. and honestly often i do not enjoy the process. my ability to see and analyse art is much much more advanced than my ability to execute. I have tons of theory accumulated while traveling and only practiced a limited time. I see all the flaws in my work and it just bugs me that i sometimes cannot fix them despite seeing that it needs improvement.
So of course the question came up if i still can get really good at this...i keep noticing huge improvements towards my older work from time to time but i'm absolutly not at a point where i would be slightly satisfied with my work. And that leads to frustration especially in the process. studies feel like failing or wasting time if even one of them looks bad. and i'm not really having a good time when that happens. i did not have that feeling with any of the other crafts mentioned above...failing did not feel that bad and its part of all of those processes...
Don't get me wrong i find it extremly pleasing when i get something right art wise and funnily art is what i think most about out of all of them. it is super interesting and i love studying different artworks and doing some world design. And i constantly have the urge to create art. no matter how painful the process of painting sometimes is to me i keep coming back and trying...i would love to draw more but the frustration kind of prevents me from doing it sometimes because it feels like starting a painful task...
I wonder if i can change that, because i think i love art in many ways and am just held back by not having any talent at it at all...its a brutal learning path for me.
But i still think if i keep pushing i can reach a level where i can be confident with my art and happy about what i am creating.
Would love to hear your thoughts about this and if there is no chance to get good at it if i don't enjoy the process right now. because maybe i do if i keep going through the frustration. maybe it's just my mindset i have accumulated....open for everything
What games have you worked on?
try to learn how to analyse and tackle the flaws and problems. try until it is fixed i guess.
@@Mcdannydew Hey, Dan. i won't tell which titles exactly as i'm on the internet here and am not an official representative of the company. But i still try to answer on what kind of games i worked on to give some context.
I've worked on 11 professional titles. Both Live and New Games. Some of them were Prototypes ranging from budget productions to AA. But all of them where located in the Free2Play Business model as there is nearly no Box Title Industry in the Country i live in.
The genres where vastly different but mostly casual to midcore with themes ranging from City Building to Farm or Zoo Simulation, to Pirates and Space Warfare.
I think i was pretty lucky to work on such vastly different products.
@@xIBlaubaer Thanks for your Answer, But i don't think that is the issue...i notice my flaws very very well...too well if you ask me up to the point that i'm never satisfied with what i produce. if i try to get something done it lacks the quality and if i try to get the quality it takes way longer than it should be.
So back to my own question this is really about the relation of becoming good and enjoying the process.
I wonder if it is possible to reach that level of confidence in your art by forcing yourself trough the unpleasant phases or if it is in vain from the get go.
I wonder if others have felt similiar but still achieved to make art mostly enjoyable. i want to believe that is possible because it was also possible in the other crafts i learned. but still art is very different in many regards
"dont do speed"
Thanks for this video! I’ve watched it several times already and have started implementing the lesson in my own work.
Awesome episode, love the idea of a new series of episodes like this one, very focused on one topic and packed with lots of info. 👍👍👍
Man... this is very very useful, I've enjoyed every single second of it!
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for every single video, I just hope one day I can make a living with digital painting.
This video was so good. I spent the whole time watching what he was saying and rewinding the video. This is the fastest time I ever subscribed to a channel
You're such a good teacher, the way you present yourself and information is very engaging.
Feng, Thankyou again Sir for taking time out of your busy schedule to share tips, and understanding from behind the scenes. Followed your works since "Stargate", studying the Design Cinema's like the Artist Bible. With so many artistic 'cooks in the kitchen', Your Professional Team has stayed top 3 in our Art Discord server. Looking forward to your school soon. Respectfully :0) G
This is my favorite design cinema video too date. Just awesome!
really like the mentality and tips you're advocating
Damn I came here when ep. 35 came out .. didn’t became a concept artist but a programmer (already > 13 years). Now I’m getting hooked again to sketch. Thanks for this great ep. 101 !!
Excellent video again. Thank you very much Feng, your videos are a huge inspiration to get back into design, and a great educational resource. Looking forward to the next upload!
Great video Feng, back to the start! I hope we get to see him draw and paint in the next video, cause we haven't seen him do that in a while actually.
these are all immensely helpful but this episode was especially so, for me. Thanks again Feng!
"I gotta slow down" He drinks coffe, which makes him faster lmao
Thank you Feng for all your wonderful videos ! You rock ! 🤘🏻
I haven't heard feng's voice for months. This feels so good man.
As usual brilliant, informative and clear. Get sketching peeps!
Dang it! You make this video AFTER I did all of these mistakes in my first few years of starting out! Jk
This is such an insightful video! There seems to be a lot of misunderstanding between the expectations of being a student or beginning and it's easy to jump the gun. Thanks for clearing these things up!
Thanks Feng, love listening to these
Yes! I made up everything!
“That’s why its so bad!”
That was a gut punch man 😆 😂
Thank you very much fr the time you spend creating these videos. They have been integral to my development as an artist.. Thanks a milllion
1:00:00 woah that general grevious breakdown is mind blowing, and it's on paper as well. Amazing
Love back to basic series, you are the best!
Thanks Feng, you are a the kindest of Jedi knights out there for sharing the knowledge of the force :)
I wish I had watched this vid when I started drawing seriously. Awesome video!
oh wow it's the first video from you I just watch and it made me realise how much I never learn, I hope I'll keep enough motivation to exercice a little every day, you are really inspiring ! :3
Big Thank you for this Video! The Most Importamt Part for me was were you showed the different steps of Line drawing because i often start too detailed And i have no structure in my process. And the elbow position ist Something i havent thought of until now. Im 21 yo and i am struggling with wrist problems so this should help!
Man don't stop making those videos i m learning more and more from ya and new artist will get a tast of how great your tutorials is ☺
33:50 SSAO - screen-space ambient occlusion. "Screen-space" refers to it being calculated over the rendered pixels, rather than scene geometry.
thank you,It really helped me a lot! Every time I see it, it inspires me!我会继续加油的!
Great stuff, I'm learning so much and I'm glad you're doing this for free;)
Look back at the earlier sketches are great. I still have your tutorials from Gnome Workshop. Thanks for everything.
I had this question for a long time in my mind drawing humans, finnally and specifically answered !
some good quotes in here lol.
"nobody actually knows what a train looks like."
"let me slow down by drinking some coffee."
"let me slow down by drinking some coffee." lol I never even questionned it, he says that all the time.
I am illustrator working with game dev also finished art academy. Still find this video really good quality with tons of great information, thank you for your time and all the effort to create this!
Dude ...
Tihis is my first time on your channel and you got me.
Awesome class
wow... this is the quality content that I was looking for, thanks man
Thank you so much for another amazing video! Used your advice throughout my degree course.
Excellent! One of your best videos, so inspiring thank you !
You're amazing, man. Thanks so much for all of this.
Thanks for your generosity, great videos and tips, like the drawing from the elbow tip, something to learn to be consious about.
Thank you Feng. This is probably the most informative video so far, as far self learning goes. But, LOL. Now you tell us. I naively started off in the hard area; humans, vintage cars and bikes and graying my hair in the process.
that was refreshing. ty for that, good to go back to the basics. ❤
Costume Design Episode is definitely a go for me!!!
Thank for all the content! I are one of my inspirations for me persuing concept art
Master Feng, you're a Gold mine of Knowledge.
this is the stuff i enjoy when uncle feng drops some real good wisdom
Seriously the video should get millions of views just for the part explaining the difficulty line. 👍👍👍👍
For the glory of the mighty sun 🌞 i must be a genious (joking). By instinct i practiced using the difficulty line. since i was young i always enjoyed drawing 🌲🌳🌲🌴 trees, they were so easy to draw and i always felt so inspired by the different shapes and i was always motivated because i had to really mess up to make a mistake. i mean they are trees, they come in all shapes and forms, they are so easy to draw. And by instinct i avoided like the plague anything it had to do with animals and people.
I''m New here, and I stumble in this episode. I think I will be starting from Ep 1.
EDIT: seriously I learn a lot in this Episodes. Thank you!
