A very informative video. I've been on the fence on whether to get a Micro-9 or not. I'm 56 and retired, my eyes aren't what they used to be, and w/the price of ammo and living on a budget, I don't practice as much. Thanks for the video buddy, I think a 4"-4.3" barrel works best for me in my situation.
Indeed. I absolutely wouldn’t carry anything bigger or heavier than a 365. I tried my CZ P-01 for about 2 weeks and it felt like an anchor. I love the gun but I detest carrying it. 16-20 ounces unloaded is my max.
Having a full size handgun pretty much forces you into appendix carry for concealment which is wildly uncomfortable despite the liars that say it isn't. I have a p365xl and even with a holster claw it very slightly prints through my shirt. No way I could ever comfortably conceal a full size handgun. 10+1 and a 15rd spare mag is enough for me.
I agree 100% Bottom line is you WILL carry all the time if it's easy to do If it's a PITA you will end up not carrying as much as if it were much easier and likely far less often. Nine rounds of 124grn HST in my front packet BTLH EVERY day all day out of 15 rounds back home sitting in a safe.
The only people that I know that use large firearms for EDC are ones that don’t actually care if it prints or they have a certain body size where you cant tell the gun from the gut…
@@tortol4847 probably just have a bad belt, bad holster, or need to lose a few pounds… i appendix carry a Glock 19 every day and it’s not bad at all. And i both drive a ton and move a lot on construction sites. Just sayinf
At 56 years of age, I went down from a full size 1911 to a Sig P365 due to the weight comparison and increased capacity. While I definitely shoot much better with a 1911, Beretta 92FS and my CZ Shadow 2, I just cannot tote that much weight around anymore. This is why an avid shooter, such as myself, goes to a micro 9. However, this was a great video for a newcomer to the shooting game. The micro 9’s definitely have a ton more bounce than a full size pistol. If you carry one, practice, practice, practice.
I have a Ruger SR1911 and a Springfield Armory A1 Mil Spec both top notch 1911 pistols but heavy and have to be holstered in a thick leather holster. I am a die hard.45 gun owner. I purchased a S&W M&P Shield .45 and it’s a great pistol alternative to the 1911 pistol. Amazingly the .45 Shield has very little recoil with a 3.3” barrel
Here's an alternate outline. My dad has basically destroyed his grip strength and hands doing concrete and foundation work for so many years. Rheumatoid arthritis carpal tunnel are two of many issues with his hands. I handed him a glock 19 and he struggled severely with running the action of the slide. Also had issues loading mags to capacity. He picked up a g43x and said it was overall easier to work the slide and grip the weapon. I just want him to be able to have something he can conceal yet still function it in a harsh moment. Maybe adrenaline kicks in and he racks the 19 slide with no issue. But I feel that his ability to regularly use the 43x over regular use of the 19 comes into play. Less shots but I know he can reload it with little issues. Better than trying to reload a larger pistol and having tons of medical issue fighting against you

I have similar issues as your pop. The 43x is what I went with. My hands are a bit long. Added talon grip then put hogue slip on with finger grooves over those. Night sites and shield 15rd mags. It runs just as good as my big glocks and it's just as accurate out to 20-25yds.
The new Walther PDP-F series has a 20% easier racking slide, better grip than the PDP, and a closer trigger reach with the best stock trigger and accuracy right out of the box.
@@richardcheese4722 yup its a very nice pistol for people with grip strength problems and arthritis. The slimmer profile is also something the old man really likes. Said it feels like a glove compared to a 19.
I don't know about that some small guns have a tendency to turn in your hand. The mini revolvers come to mind. Not to mention derringers. I can't believe they actually make a derringer that shoots 45-70 . Why would anyone ever want or need such a thing.
Good points here. Small guns are heavily promoted, especially to new shooters. Experienced shooters have found that extreme lightweight is a net negative, but this seems to be overlooked. Thanks for bringing this out.
Definitely a great video with great reasons. That being said if you live in a sh!tty state and have to conceal without printing then carry what you can. Just train with it and like he said realize the disadvantages.
I carried a G19 for many years as my Duty Weapon and a G26 as my Off Duty EDC but as I retired and became older (78), I found myself having a bit of difficulty handling these two handguns and I switched to the New Glock Slimline G43 & G48! Of these two, I found myself shooting better with the G48 and it felt more like a full size handgun! I was no longer accurate with the G43 so I sold it and I now only have my G48 which is much better for me at my age. I also go to my LGR one day every week and I have since purchased 4 .22LR handguns which I shoot very well and I am having more fun than ever and I save a bunch of money on ammo! Thank you Glock for this great Slim Line Model for Old Guys like me!
As someone who’s carried and fired full-size, compact, and micro, I’m not disputing these but I strongly feel they are totally subjective. I personally carry a hellcat for EDC and with time, practice, and training I don’t experience any of these.
Reasons you would want a micro 9: 1. According to the FBI, 44% of all handgun fights are from 0-5 ft. another 21% are from 5-10 feet, 15% are 11-20 feet. At those distances a long sight radius isn't necessary to put a bullet in a man-sized target. 2. They are easier to conceal and weigh less so they are more likely to be carried everywhere, particularly by women. 3. While it's true that a micro 9 is going to be a bit snappier than a full size pistol, it's certainly easily manageable, with proper technique, for all but the most timid shooters. 4. It's smaller size makes it more difficult for an attacker to get a good leveraged grip on the barrel of the pistol to take it away from you, using crav maga or other martial arts techiques. 5. It packs nearly as much punch as it's longer barreled brethren, to take down most attackers at short distances. Clearly, there are pros and cons to each depending on the person and the situation -- different horses for different courses -- you know the thing.
I feel like race gun/competition shooters notice a lot of things that just aren't going to affect the average shooter. I could be wrong, but most shooters might go through a single box of ammo at the range, not nearly enough to feel strain on their trigger finger, and as long as the recoil doesn't physically hurt them they're not going to mind. In fact, I've noticed that the smoother shooting guns with less recoil tend to get called "boring" by newer shooters. They also aren't going to notice that it takes an extra half second to reload or gain sight picture. I hear the warning "you're not going to wanna practice with it" at gun stores all the time, but in my experience the ergonomics of the gun factor in very low in whether or not casual shooters take it to the range. Of course, when you own multiple guns and train for perfection regularly, you begin to notice and appreciate so many factors concerning gun handling, but the truth is that most of these factors are irrelevant to your average gun owner. As long as they can shoot it reliably without hurting themselves and they can carry it at work or in public without issue they are satisfied.
Definitely! I mean, look at the "distance" that the Honest Outlaw is shooting at. 50 feet. 95% of all "lawful, defensive, non-police involved shootings" occur within 30 feet or less. A 9mm micro compact is "more than adequate" for most people who have to shoot defensively from 30 or less. How many everyday citizens, are going to shoot a dangerous threat from 50 feet away? Most people would instinctively "seek cover" and wait until the threat got close enough to them, for them to get off a clean shot.
@@Scorch1028 depends on where you are. Sidewalks and streets are very long, so as you naturally separate from the target who might start running, you might hit that 10 yards, and you might be running while shooting as well. 5% isn't insignificant to train for as well
@@Scorch1028 actually FBI statistics state that the average self defense shooting is within 7ft and almost never involve reloading because it usually begins in a scuffle lol which makes your point even more, If you're shooting past 25yds the legality of, if you had to shoot when you could have tried to get cover/get away comes into play, stand your ground etc. And anti 2A prosecutors will make your life hell and will bankrupt you with legal fees to prove your innocence. The longest shots you'll take will be in your house (hallway, yard etc) but outside your property if you're shooting past 25yds you got some splaining to do minus an active shooter scenario, which you should be taking cover or trying to flee and not play Rambo lol take cover and if the threat gets too close than fire. I'm 100% for stand your ground and justification of shooting whatever distance to stop a threat.... But REALITY is, these anti 2A prosecutors don't always see it the way it should be (right to defend ones life by standing your ground). Micro 9s fit the bill for 7yds and in, point center mass and shoot till the threat is stopped. My wife won't carry something bigger than a g43 really unless it's in her purse, which the g43 is fine. She knows, and everyone should know, the limitations of a smaller pistol, if your target is farther than 25yds, close the distance or seek cover until they get closer to get a good shot off with that micro 9. Better self defense case, than blasting at a threat past 25yds... This ain't the movies lol Carries what's easiest for you but train for all scenarios
I’m a woman with small hands. I want a 9mm gun and was thinking about the shield plus. I’m going to a range and do their “try before you buy” to find the right one for me. Many ranges offer this and I’m glad for it.
As a smaller guy with small hands, the P365 fits my hand perfectly. Now, taking into account sight radius, etc., I will admit that I can shoot lights out with something like the Canik TP9SF. But, I still shoot the P365 fairly well, and for self-defense, I'm not target shooting, I'm stopping the threat. I feel confident that I can do that with the P365, or I flat wouldn't trust my life to it. Bigger hands are probably going to be better off with something else. No one pistol is perfect for everyone, so it's good that there are choices out there!
I have bigger hands but I’m not the largest person, so I went with the 365XL because it’s still small enough to carry when I wear nearly anything. But like you said…. Great that there’s an huge selection.
Not to mention, a lot of companies are including different size backstraps for their smaller pistols as well as the full sized. Makes most pistols comfortable for a wider range of hand sizes.
I have a P365 and now also a GX4 for carry in the warmer months, or situations I just can't carry the full sized. Sometimes I even take one of those backpacking simply because it's lighter than the full sized. I'm really glad the weather is starting to cool off and I'll more comfortably be able to carry the full sized again though.
As a long time shooter, but 1-2 years out of practice and getting back in, I keep finding myself on your video's again and again. Even though I usually balk at video's over 5-10 minutes I have watched every one of your video's I've started. Great content; keep up the good work.
Glad to see someone summing up the drawbacks of the popular micro 9 category. Definitely not a reason NOT to get one, but nice to know what you're getting yourself into.
Having lots of shooting experience, I got a micro 9 as opposed to a duty pistol for two main reasons. A. Carrying a gun in the environment I work in is taboo and getting caught would ostracize me. Thus the smaller the better. B. I would be carrying IWB, and therefore would t want to jam a duty sized pistol between my belt and my hip. If you’re ok open carrying, then definitely get a duty pistol. But if you have the experience, don’t be afraid of getting one. In short, get the tool you need for the job you’re doing.
I’ve been surprised how much I’ve come to love and be comfortable with my 43x. That was a pretty happy place for me in regards to small, but shootable.
@@vipe650r I have a 365, and love it. I’m more of a shotgun guy personally, but I can’t deny that micro 9’s have a ton of utility and can be amazing pieces. Convenience combined with firepower is a great set of pros.

I've been wondering if they ever sued anyone successfully for patent infringement (even though their magazine wasn't much different from the KelTec P11 magazine and others before it). It seems that the staggered magazine idea really exploded.

I have had several larger carry guns and recently bought a Kimber Micro 9 and I love the pistol. Mine shoots great and very accurate for self defense and even though I went from striker fired back to a 1911 style, it doesn’t bother me to carry cocked and locked. I also like the fact I can shoot this pistol one handed and I feel very comfortable using this as my daily carry and in a life saving situation.
Bought one a few months back and I struggle with a good grip on it. My pinky is completely off and ring finger is only half way. I’m only able to get a complete grip with my middle finger.
@@jeffw5733they do make slightly longer mags for it…if yours has the flush fitting 6 round mag they make a 7-round with a pinky extension…they also make an 8-round with a slightly longer pinky extension. Obviously makes the grip longer and harder to conceal, but if you can’t get a good grip you’re probably not shooting it very well or very much. Hope that helps you!
Everything you say is true, but it goes back to the old saying "The small gun on your hip is more useful than the big gun in your safe." Do you actually carry the G34 concealed. If you do, congratulations. But most people can't. And it the end, it all comes down to training. It's nice if the shooting is fun, but training is to a purpose, and if someone carries, that purpose is to be able to employ their CCW gun as well as possible. Also, my main point of comparison for these guns is not bigger autos, but snubbie revolvers. People have been carrying J-frames and the like for something like a century, and they're even harder to handle and shoot than these micro 9s.
Yeah I bought a 1911 bc I loved the looks of it and I know they're great guns but only a day or so of having it I knew I had to get a subcompact. The 1911 with 5 inch barrel is way too big to do anything with but shoot for fun or grab for home defense. The guns weight pulls your damn pants down. I ended up buying a sub for concealed carry and it's way easier to carry. The one I bought, the vp9sk, came with 3 mags too and all are different sizes. Theres longest one has a spot for your pinky and the short one is flush with the grip and then of course there's one that's in between so you have one for whichever fits you best.
@@matthewcaughey8898 until a dime ends up lodged between the cylinder and top strap... it was the craziest malfunction I've ever dealt with on a wheel gun. It wasn't even stored in a fanny pack or pocket, it was in an IWB holster.

I carried both on and off duty for many years. I started carrying a 4" revolver on duty then a 2.5" round butt version of the same pistol. Later carried a 70 series commander, then Officers model. All full steel guns. Later in career went to the Glock and settled on the 19 for both on and off duty. Now at almost 7 decades, I no longer want to deal with the weight of a "compact". The new micro 9's are fine for me. I practice with it but do not shoot them for fun. It is a primarily carry comfortably and shoot if needed or just maintain skill level. For fun I shoot 22's or full size revolvers and semi's.
You must be about 60 years old( like me) In the 1960's and 1970's the 4inch S&W model 19 was the patrol officer's duty weapon, detectives carried snub nose .38 special revolvers under their coats.
The only set-up I've found that I've been able to carry 100% of the time is my p365, 12 round mag, in my helikon-tex possum fanny pack. Every day, everywhere. It isn't the most tactical, fastest, accurate, etc etc etc, but I always have it with me and that's worth a lot.
I agree with what you said at the end about the G26. In my hands, it defies physics because I actually shoot it faster and more accurately than my G19. This is true even with the flush magazine, though I carry it with the factory 12 round extension for ease of getting it out of the holster.
Exactly I carry one of my pocket all the time the grip is rather small slender but it still shoots surprisingly well and Phoenix is t-shirt short weather.
Depends. I have huge hands. Although I can shoot it, I don’t shoot it well. It kinda floats in my hand. And it’s not the recoil as I shoot my 2.5” sp101 in 357 mag just fine. Bottom line is no matter the size (big or small) if you can’t meld with the gun, you’ll struggle to shoot it well.
I personally carry a Glock 17 in appendix position with an extra mag. I have a friend who carries an HK P30 long slide with a mag well and an RMR in the same appendix position. It comes down to what you are willing to carry everyday and a proper holster for your body shape. My opinion is to carry the biggest gun you can and practice regularly, especially with drawing from concealment.
If you're recommending home defense guns, your G34 is an amazing choice. Big, accurate, huge capacity, and lots of accessories that make it easier to use. But realistically speaking, I take one look at the G34 and say "no way I'm packing that". So maybe focus a little more on the viable carry gun: the midsized compact, something in the Glock 19 size range. Beyond that, outstanding video, and thanks for pointing out the fifth issue. Especially given that under extreme stress, coordination goes to hell anyway. I actually considered a micro 9, but I don't think they offer much advantage over the old S&W 6904 I already have. The micros might be a bit smaller, but the 6904 is an old friend that I've practiced with a lot.
I couldn’t ever find one of the micro Carry I could comfortably even hold let alone use. The 43x/48 was kind of bashed by some reviewers for the grip being G19 size but I think it’s perfect size for me and with the shield mags it has high capacity too. The 43x hit a sweet spot for me with size carry ability and capacity.
@@geoffp9941 Basically same length on the grip, but smaller circumference for the 43. It's lighter, so snappier than the 26. Also, 6 rds for the 43 versus 10 (or more with any larger 9mm double stack mag) in the 26 make the 43 a non-starter for me. Love my 26, my 42, 43x and P365XL. All are great carry guns for different purposes.
Only thing about those Shield arms mags is that I just can’t bring myself to trust them. I know all the reviews say they are reliable but I just don’t trust anything other than the oem mags in my carry guns. You know the saying about opinions so whatever works for you have at it.
For a small auto I would prefer a .32 or .380. One thing I think people miss in regards to full size rounds in small light weapons is that you absolutely need to be able to use it well one handed and even weak hand. A gun you can handle in a two handed sporting stance may be much more of a problem when you are grappling or injured and have to use one hand.
ANY firearm in a fight is better than NO firearm in a fight. Criminals do not want to get shot. They want unarmed victims. Just be proficient in what you carry. Carry what you can effectively use. Put the round where it can cause the perpetrator to rethink their actions. Avoidance, descalation and deterrence. Live by those ideas and hopefully you'll never have to use said firearm.
i tried the P365 in 380 at the range last week, much easier to handle and do follow up shots. maybe some of these manufacturers might follow Sig and make 380 barrels for their micro-compacts? for even smaller guns, i've tried the LCP II, LCP Max, and Bodyguard 380, the kick is pretty significant. much harder to line up the next shot than even a 9mm micro compact. the heavier P238 is somewhat softer, though, but it's got a 1911 style layout and i think Sig discontinued it this year
@@chipcarter5971 agreed. Fast draw and fast accurate fire is all I need. I carry a glock 19 and 17. But when I see my wife shoot her lcp(because that's all she will carry) it pisses me off. Way to snappy. And for what? To appease these people that are obsessed with power and ballistics gel. They are missing what and who these guns should be really made for. Loved the glock 42 though. Perfect balance of size, weight, and caliber it shot
I love my G2C. The pinky extension on the magazine gives you a really good purchase. And also the trigger guard has another spot to hold on to while pressing your left thumb on the "memory pad". Everything he's saying is accurate, but with enough practice you can alleviate trigger manipulation and as long as you grip the firearm tightly enough, it's very accurate. And small enough to conceal. So sub-compact is actually alot more manageable than a micro. The GX4 in my opinion is just a tad bit too small for a 9mm. Might as well get something really small for a pocket pistol to use as a backup. Like a Keltec .32 or a Beretta Tomcat. My 2 cents.
I have a G3c. Great gun but still too big and heavy for me to carry daily. I need something I can just throw into a pocket and forgot about which is why I ended up also getting an LCP II in .380.
I’m curious as a law enforcement officer you most likely carried a Glock 17 right? Or some other full size duty pistol, I might be wrong and sorry if I am. If you have hands that are on the larger size, myself I have mammoth hands LMAO how was it training wise for you to adjust, what was the hardest part? Was it more so figuring out how to get a comfortable grip or getting used to the more snappy micro sized pistol(s)? I feel like for me it comes down to grip because my absolute unit sized hands make it nearly impossible to get a full comfortable grip on anything micro even with a pinky/plus one/two/three extension. I just can’t seem to get a good grip. Maybe you have some insight on if I just need to train more with micro pistols?
@@RichJord0331 I had to get used to wrapping my pinky under the magazine and keeping a sturdy grip. I’ve been carrying full size duty guns, but off duty it was Clock 26 for a long time. But recently I’ve carried the Sig P365 and the Springfield XDS. I like them but they’re small and drawing them is a little awkward cause of the small grip. I’ll qualify with the Hellcat Pro next month and start carrying it off duty from now on.
I wear my carry guns concealed around the house, doing yard work, etc. and have become very comfortable with them. Just a tip for anyone thinking about getting comfortable with their carry weapon/weapons.
I wear my carry gun at all times also. I carry a Glock 19 Gen 5. It’s considered a compact gun, but it seems like a full sized gun to me. Most of the time I don’t even notice that I am carrying it. If I take it off, I definitely notice the lack of extra weight on my waist. I also have a Springfield Armory XD-9 Sub-compact that is smaller and lighter but I have gotten used to the Glock. That gun almost never gets carried.
I carry my VP9 or VP9SK all the time. Another trick is to wear a larger size pants. If you wear 28 then consider buying size 30. Also the quest for quality holsters that are safe and comfortable helps.
Yes, wearing at home is a great way for one to get comfortable with your new companion, and also to learn how many different angles of body motion affect your carry. Also, carry at home is especially beneficial to protect from home invasion. The first minutes after returning from the grocery store, or getting up in the middle of the night to get a glass of milk, those are times when your EDC should be C'd. And I carry a micro-9, the Diamondback DB9 gen4, and I love it at the range and everywhere.
A few months ago I bought a Keltec P32 because there are many times I need to carry with complete concealment. My usual edc is the IWI Masada but I find that I carry the P32 about 30 to 40 percent of the time. I find that I am spending 2/3 of my practice time working with the P32 over my Masada because that gun is a lot harder to shoot well. I can get 4” groups with the Masada at 10 yards fairly easily where getting 4” groups at 15 feet is pretty difficult with the P32. It is much smaller with a worse trigger. All of which, makes accuracy much more difficult. Small guns are great for many purposes but they require a disproportionate amount of work. When you buy one you have to accept that situation and work to overcome that handicap. Outlaw, your videos are great as always, please keep up the great work. My wife asks that Mrs. Outlaw does a video aimed at women of smaller stature for shooting tips. Thanks again and blessed be.
I am small-framed so in summer it’s difficult for me to properly conceal a large, double-stack weapon. So, I’ve experimented quite a lot with my present Kimber SOLO 9mm and with 125-147 grain handloads using slower powder, the recoil impulse is spread out significantly more and is noticeably LESS recoil than other, faster loads. I carry my SOLO every day, equipped it with CTC Laser grips, and watch maintenance on it closely. It doesn’t jam, is easy to fire VERY accurately, and with me, is really easy to carry and keep concealed. Now, in winter time, when it’s cold out, I will carry one of my full-size 1911’s as I can then conceal them under the heavier clothing. Just saying my experience.
My wife and I started a competition: her on the Ruger PC Charger with red dot and me with my S&W Shield Plus with iron sights. She's 4-1, but I like the challenge. Recently I went to the range solo, and I was better with my Plus than my M&P 2.0 (former CCW) for the first time. I also carry with the 13 Rd but practice my draw (mostly) with the 10 Rd. No matter what you carry, I think practice is key. And actually I think I may get a new trigger for my 2.0.
I have recently purchased a Springfield Hellcat in 9 mm that I absolutely love, it's designed to compete with the Sig Sauer P365 and boy does it deliver. I realize this is an old video. But the Springfield is worth it a good long look and test drive.
I agree with many of the things he says. I carry a hellcat. I chose it over the 365 because I like the trigger better, and the sights better. Agreed it is the snappiest 9mm I’ve shot. But I’m a man, it’s not that bad. I practiced and got used to it in about 50 rds. It’s so comfortable to carry. I don’t leave the house without it
I also have a Hellcat. I don't even notice the "snappiness" that weaker people complain about. I like the Hellcat because it's light-weight, easy-to-conceal, and it has a more than adequate ammo capacity. I live in a conceal carry-only state, so the last thing I need is a "heavy, bulky" clunk of metal stuffed into my waistband. At about 24 oz. (excluding the holster), the Hellcat is the heaviest handgun that I'd ever want to conceal carry. 95% of all defensive shootings occur at 30 feet or less, and that's well within the range for "most shooters" to accurately fire a Hellcat.
@@Scorch1028 I agree with everything you said. It’s the most comfortable gun I’ve ever carried. However, I do see what people say about it being “snappy”. It’s not bad, just a little more recoil than other guns I’ve shot. Like I said, after a box of ammo I was completely used to it. The sights and the trigger are what sold me on it. Now, I have thought about going with a m&p shield plus. As soon as I get a chance to try one out, I might be trying that out for a new concealed carry
When I introduce new shooters to handguns I usually hand them my Walther PPQ or HK VP9. Both are dead nuts accurate and very easy for new shooters to gain confidence with while learning the fundamentals.
I was shooting a 44 magnum during the pandemic due to ammo limitations. Just shot my walther pps for first time in 2 years. Felt like nothing. I found 44 magnum corrected all my flinching problems with small 9mm/45/40
Having just moved from an APX to a Hellcat recently, I've noticed a LOT of these observations myself. HO is spot on right. Still, for the time being I still think the increased carryability outweighs the cons. Though I may change my mind about that, it's worth giving the little 9 a solid year to see if I can be as good with that as I was with a larger carry weapon.
I carry the full size APX every day my favorite weapon but just got the springfield xdm elite 10mm but I guess they both about the same size I'm 6'3" 220 lbs though so 🤷🏿♂️
I got my first gun March 13 this year. Decided on a Masada Slim based on all the great reviews i saw and the attractive price. Dang, the first two weeks were very frustrating. That thing jumped in my hand like my cat when i try to give her a bath. No fun, period. So i decided to learn grip, then trigger control, then site picture, so the basics. At the same time i bought a Stoeger STR9F. 4.7" barrel and all of the sudden i was getting direct success out of my dry fire practice. I got more accurate and it started to be fun. Next i bought a Tisas PX 9 Gen 3. Great gun and super fun to shoot. I still train every other day with my Masada S around 50 rds and i get better. But for fun, i shoot the full size and compact guns. They allow me to hit BE in a 4 - 6" group every 5 shoots up to 10 yds and for now, that is good enough. Eventually my grip strength will be good enough and my trigger manipulation capabilities will be on a level that i can carry the Masada S without the fear of having to use it. Passed my CC class, permit requested. Until i get it, i want to master the Masada S. I train once or twice a week on the range and dry fire at home whenever i can. I never ever thought that it is so difficult to learn to shoot. A real eye opener. Good video, should be mandatory for every new gun owner to watch it . Thanks for sharing.
My CCW is a Sig P365 XL. It has a 3.7" barrel. For me, the Xtra grip size is perfect as well as the ergo. It fits my hand like a glove. I do not have to put an extended mag in just so I can hold it. 12+1 X 2. 12rd mags that fit flush. I also purchased Sigs 15rd mag for a backup. I purchased their Romeo Zero 6moa for it. Awesome for CCW. Conceals well with an AIWB kydex holder and claw. I purchased a Tac Dev picatinny rail to mount a WML and purchased an OLight BALDR Mini 600lumen/green laser that is very bright. This I clip on at night for home defense. The laser allows me to shoot from almost ANY position. 1 handed. Over my shoulder. From behind the bed or sofa. From 0-7yrds this works for pretty much any self-defense scenario.1 pew-pew to rule them all. Peace and Freedom for All. Stay safe out there.
Also, I do have a CZ P-07 mostly stock. I put a lighter recoil spring in it. No RDS right now but I do have the OLight BALDR Mini 600lums/green laser to clip on if needed. It's mostly my Wally-Mart pew-pew .. just kidding 😇 Awesome for home D-Fence or CCW. Awesome pew-pew!
@G-Shack 1970 Hey there. The red dot is pretty useless for self-defense from 0-7rds out. If you ask someone who's been in a car jacking or mugging and had to use deadly force if they picked up their ' red dot ' before pulling the trigger, most would say I pointed and shot at that distance and did not acquire their dot or even lined up their iron sights. It's great for at the range or distances farther than that. And for LEOs. It is there if I need it and I train with it every day. However, for home defense in a darkened room or low light, it is so easy to pick up my ' green dot ' and pull the trigger. The laser is bright enough in daylight that I find it faster than the ' red dot '. And I can shoot from ANY position. At my hip if I want. I do not have to look through a tiny piece of glass and have it up to my eye sight. I highly recommend a green laser dot. Try one and you will see what I mean. And no, I am not ' lazy '. I train every day with both sights. I believe I am being ' smart ' because I have the best protection I can get for self-defense. Peace and Freedom for All. Stay safe out there.
@@amanhasnoname3447 Yeah, I've got the OLight BALDR Pro on my TP9SF and the green laser is nice and bright, and is definitely more suited to close range, sudden scenarios in that you just pick up that green dot almost instantly without having to get a sight picture...and you're right, I really can't stand the fact that most people ignore the fact that most self defense shootings are gonna be point shooting without even utilizing the sights in the first place.
@@chrism4008 Hey there. If you have the chance, try them both. For some reason, I didn't like the way the g48 or ANY of the ' G's ' grip angles felt. To me, they feel ' unnatural in my hand. The P365 XL fit me like a glove. It felt like an ' extension of my arm. To me, that builds confidence in my abilities to use it as a tool. Being able to carry a 9mm pistol on your person at all times is the PRO, especially in a country with a high crime rate like here in South Africa. And honestly, my G43 is perfectly shootable. After a while of shooting micro nines, you adapt and shoot them almost as good as bigger handguns; this is my experience .
Agree I carry my G48 mos all day everyday AIWB and it is comfortable and works for me and I shoot it extremely well! I don’t use the Shield Arms S15 either… Just OEM with an extra 10rd mag in my pocket or mag caddy. Stay safe out there
Agree that the handgun you decide on purchasing, especially in South Africa, means it will be your go to handgun always with the gun laws. Personally I work with full size pistols, and for that reason would go for something that is similar to those. Pietro Beretta Mod 92 FS, is heavyish for my body structure, whereas the Beretta PX4 Storm feels to light at times. But then again, I can hide them both on my person, relatively well. I just need to put on one of the smaller grips to avoid readjusting my hand to engage or disengage the HOD, and mag release. Keep with what you're familiar and practice with for consistency. And also, if you have friends with different handguns, never say no to shooting them. Might just become your secondary weapon if your friend gets incapacitated. Knowing the trigger and reset is always good.
This is why I love my FN509 Midsize or any compact pistol similar to the Glock 19. They strike up the best balance, in my opinion, between ease of carrying and all of the factors mentioned in this video.
That is a good run down. I got a G43 when it came out. Yes, I have shot a lot with it. Drills, yes, movement, reloads, etc. I love it. It is accurate enough to get center mass 25yd. I have gotten fairly consistant at that. Here is my logic. I like the gun, it is paid for, I invested training time in it. I am 5'7", 185lbs (fire plug shaped). Concealment matters. Carry 2 extra mags and I feel I have enough ammo. The recoil does not bother me. I spent 28yrs in the Army infantry, am 60 now, and I have a ton of weapons training. I like the small guns because the conceal best for me. Carry what works for you, whatever that may be. Only you can say what that is or is not, good, bad or otherwise.
I agree. Over the years, I have slowly went bigger and bigger. I started with the Shield. I still carry it but I prefer the compact size over the micro.
The point about needing to keep shooting a micro compact frequently is spot on. When I got my P938 as my primary carry gun, I made it my primary range gun, too. I shoot it so much that getting all three fingers onto the grip of a gun feels weird. You have to put the time in with the micro pistols if you plan to carry them. They will become fun to shoot, by the way.
You want one for the times you'd leave the bigger one at home. They are not "good" guns, but they are a lot better than no gun. They should not be the primary carry option for most people though.
Some of them are very good guns. They have become the primary carry option for most people. and probably the vast majority of women. I am more accurate with my P365XL with a Holosun than with some of my bigger guns. Maybe for somebody who shoots as much as Honest Outlaw, the minis are just too small, but for most of us, I think it's just like any other change.
CCW is not about not about “having fun shooting” and pinching yourself. It’s about protecting yourself and others in a bad situation. An inexperienced shooter shouldn’t, and probably won’t be concealed carrying. I do understand recoil and ease of use and accuracy can effect shooting in a bad situation, but again an experienced shooter isn’t worried about that.
@@bjs301 A small gun is always going to be harder to shoot than a similar quality gun that's larger. It's true that they've become the primary gun for a lot of people, but it's also true that most people that carry don't practice nearly enough, and don't realize what they are sacrificing. Not knowing what you are missing doesn't mean that you aren't missing anything. These guns have an important niche to fill. They've are also being used outside that niche much of the time. I'm not bashing anyone who carries one. I carry one sometimes. Sometimes it's even the Taurus one. Sometimes it's the best gun for the situation. If it's your only gun it's your best gun for every situation. But I hope people at least stop and consider the advantages of a larger gun. If I'm ever in a situation where I have to use one of my micros I'll probably wish it was a full-sized. But then again there's a chance I'll also wish it was a rifle.
My first gun was a ruger LC9s and it was very hard to shoot as a beginner. I wanted it because it was so small and easy to carry. Its a great gun if you're experienced but not good for beginners. Learn from my mistake, go for a full size if you're a beginner
I started with a CZ Shadow 2 just because I realized inherently that being a newbie, I wanted a very reliable gun that was easy to gain accuracy with. This made shooting fun, practical and confidence-building. I have since bought several other pistols, and have learned to adapt to their differences. Building that confidence early, and enjoying practicing set me up for success. You are spot on.
Every LC9 I've fired was a POS. Unreliable, inaccurate, and if my life depended on it I'd rather chop off my left arm with a butter knife and use it as a club than rely on an LC9
@@Brandon-Kraemer Yeh the LCP Max is much much better than that gun. LC9 feels like it's reaching just for the sake of having at least SOMETHING to compete with the micro 9's (not realizing that the LCP Max is a great competitor in the micro 9 market all by itself)

This was a really helpful video thanks. I’d been thinking seriously about a Shield Plus or a GX4 and after watching this decided my G26 & G3C are sufficient for my needs.
Find the gun that fits you, practice with it regularly, and carry when you are able. I like my P365, my wife prefers her Shield. Most days, however, I have an LCR in 38Spl. The small guns have their place and will get the job done inside 7 yards.
I carry a 365. I keep a good group at 25'ft. I keep a really good group at 15'ft with a chest sized target. Or even a cantaloupe size target. It's made for a specific purpose. Ease of carry. It's made to get me out of a pinch. A pinch that will most likely never happen. I have larger guns for when/if shit hits the fan and you can benefit from size and capacity and for when concealment is no longer a concern. Or to go to the range with.
I've been carrying and shooting handguns in civilian, competitive, and police roles for 50 years, and owned my own range and shot daily. So I have a fair amount of experience But that experience doesn't last forever and things change. When I retired to Florida, I decided to carry a small 9mm pistol. At the time, the high capacity micros had not hit the market. I decided to take out my compact 9's to see which I shot best when placed under reasonable time pressure and distance, shooting from a variety of positions. I took my smallest pistol, a Kahr PM9, a Glock 43, and original Shield, a Walther PPS M2LE, a Springfield XD-s, an M&P Compact, and a Glock 26, and ran myself through the same courses courses of fire, which ranged from 3-25 yards. I didn't choose that last distance at random. I was trained many years ago at Gunsite by the late Jack Furr that I should practice on the calm square range at roughly twice the distance that I wished to be competent at. Jack taught that the effects of stress and fear would cut my abilities in half in the real world. Having been under fire, I find that to be true. I figured 12-15 yards real world would suffice. What I found was that I really could not turn in a satisfactory performance under stress with either the Kahr or the G43, even though they were both accurate in slow fire. Both were fine guns, but my abilities had slipped. I was surprised to find I did not have sufficient hand strength to operate the slide on either in an emergency. I did well with the Shield, the PPS M2, and the Springfield XD-S, all of which were just slightly larger than the Kahr or G43. None of these was a challenge to conceal. But the real star of the show was the Glock 26, and the runner-up was the M&P Compact. These two shot like a full-sized gun. I chose the G26, but soon after, I had to provide my best friend something to protect himself with and loaned him the G26. The M&P Compact wasn't mine. So I chose the Shield. I've been carrying that ever since. I shoot it well out to 25 yards under pressure, and if I take my time can get hits out to 50 yards. I carry it with the 8 round magazine in it because it helps me draw it better. I carry one or two spare 8 round magazines (they are hardly noticeable in a good pouch). And, even with my arthritis I can rack the slide on the Shield. This was my selection process nd it seemed reasonable for me. It may not be yours. But I did find to my surprise that fairly small increases in size and weight can result in you getting a much more shootable handgun that will probably be just as concealable as a tiny pistol that you are a marginal performer with. People ask me all the time when I'll buy a Shield Plus. I probably won't because I'm done chasing capacity. I leave my place each day with 25 rounds of 9mm on board and I think that's enough for this grumpy old man, But I do like the Shield Plus. Another thing to consider is dialing back cartridge- power. For example, while I did not shoot the Glock 43 well, this was not the case with the Glock 42 in .380. That handgun was a joy to shoot and I did very well with it. I think that pistol is worth a look.
I'm a revolver guy but I like to think of the micro 9's as the equivalent to the J frame. Fun to carry and shoot, but takes a lot more practice to become accurate with.
#5 is an excellent point. For a while I carried a Taurus G2C, I trained with it & put well over 2,000 rounds through it. However, I upgraded to a Glock 43X because it fits my bear paw hands better (I’m a big dude like you, Chris), and more importantly I could get markedly improved purchase on the pistol straight from the holster with less adjustment. The 43X is about as small as I’m willing to go for precisely this reason. I find myself using my support hand, post-draw, to tweak my grip as I present & aim, sometimes to a detrimental level. The 43X is a small enough pistol (for me) to comfortably conceal, while reliably drawing from my IWB holster AND getting sights on quickly. Makes a huge difference. This tracks precisely with my experience. Bought Hellcat OSP in 2020...spent 2 years trying (and failing) for consistent shots/groups at 5 yards with red dot. Snappy, difficulty finding comfortable left hand grip, and "crunchy" factory trigger. Rented P365X 3 weeks ago, and was more accurate/consistent at 10 yards with unfamiliar gun and iron sights. Traded the Hellcat last week for the 365XL. First range outing with it was a revelation...I left the range NOT feeling frustrated with my shooting.
On of my favorite small handguns is the Kahr CW9. They aren't "micro", but they aren't as large as a subcompact. Great sized grip, very thin, and my trigger finger rests perfectly. Very easy to conceal carry. Being double action only is a great "safety" since it requires a very deliberate trigger pull to shoot, but it is smooth and not terrible at around 6.5 lbs pull.
I've one of the Kahr PM40 I bought as back up for a Glock 23. I was able to qualify with it at the SO, but I changed to a Glock 27 for magazine compatibility,but also trigger pull commonality. The Kahr is smooth, but I just couldn't tell when about to fire. The Glocks have a tiny bit of a wall, and I can tell when it's about to fire. If I didn't have to qualify with the Glock, I'd have carried the Kahr, no problem.
If you miss your target on range . You could be hitting somebody you don't want to in a situation. Close range someone will also grab at your pistol. Try to keep the Gap if possible , during home intrusion too. situation
Have several micros all in 9mm and all works definitely very well on on my small hands but will prefer always to carry a compact. So far, my favorites are the G43X and my second the Walther PPSM2.
Dude, (I really enjoy your videos), I have a P365 for EDC. It's fine. I'm 6'2". One of the points of concealed carry is the "concealed" part. I can shoot well at all practical distances. All one needs is a little regular practice. Keep up the good work.
Will say it does recoil quite a bit and I do use the 10 rounder with the small grip space but overall very positive reviews from me. I'm definitely not as accurate with it as I am with a full sized but I can look past that with the pros.
Same reason I lean towards my 365, I have a problem with printing with bigger guns. Also, recoil on the 365 really isn't bad, especially with the 12rd mags, or the 'X' size grip. With the longer grip it's much easier to hold on to and eliminates some of that mag bite problem.
Something for new shooters to consider irrespective of gun size is the ammo, specifically bullet weight. Of course there’s going to be exceptions to rule but generally speaking a heavier bullet will have less muzzle velocity resulting in less felt recoil. Also I’m not surprised that the Ruger has most felt recoil of the micro nines. My wife had a Ruger LCP when she complained it hurt to shoot it I was like WTF it’s a .380 for crying out loud. Then I shot it… needless to we sold it along with more than a 1/2 box of ammo.
I think the decision to carry a micro 9mm is strictly a personal decision based on experience. I was a police officer for 32 years and a long time firearms instructor. One of the best off-duty and secondary weapons I own is a Smith & Wesson Shield. For me, this is a perfect carry gun.
Agreed. I'll still train with my Hellcat and P365, but they're not my favorite to shoot (great for conceal carry though). If I'm going to the range I'll have a much better time using my larger pistols.
Same. My go-to warm weather carry is LCPMax, and I'm similar size/frame to Chris. I don't practice NEARLY as much as he does (really, who does?) but I do roughly twice a month and am confident that I'll hit what I aim at and miss what I'm not aiming at.

I’ve been selling guns for a living for a little over a year at this point so I’ve seen a few different ones and it’s been my favorite by far. So much so I picked one up, it’s my carry gun, and I’ve put a little money into it to tweak it into exactly what I want. Everyone is different and you may not agree with me but humor me and at least look into it. Sights are amazing and the trigger is good, not to mention capacity to size ratio
@@JacksonWalter735 It's an improvement over my original LCP but just baaarely bigger, and 4 rounds more in the mag. Not to mention the trigger and sights are a lot better. Overall I like it quite a bit. Something about those other 4 rounds. Makes you feel.. "armed".
My two tips for packing a bigger gun would be. 1. Quality stiff 1.5 inch belt 2. Quality leather owb pancake holster 3. Flannel shirts I carry my Canik Mete sfx this way and it's hardly in the way or uncomfortable for about 8-10 hours of the day. People pay no attention hardly so carry what you want, and who cares if it prints a little, unless you're in a highly populated area or just have to remain totally concealed for work.. i'd always pick full/compact size. sheeeet... I carry a glock 21 or a glock 23 gen 5 with a loose tank top or tshirt in a iwb kydex holster with not to loose not to tight cargo shorts OR golf shorts. I do use a 1.5 jukemo belt thought.
All good reasons why I’m still carrying my J Frame S&W in retirement, 100% reliability. I got my first J Frame in 1968 & have been shooting them ever since. My EDC is a 340PD, not much fun at the range, but I also have a Model 60 that gets plenty of range time.
Its hard to beat the 340 pd at 12 oz.'s . I always have it on me because I hardly notice it. Plus,you can shoot it from inside your pocket...try that with a micro semi-auto lol..no way
Having medium sized hands, I love my Ruger Max-9 and my Ruger LCP Max both with 10 round mags with pinky extensions. I agree that you need to shoot them often to get the feel down but after a couple hundred rounds in each, I can shoot an accurate group at 15' with both eyes open. That's really what I purchased them for.
Ive never pinched myself with my Kimber micro 9. Im planning to switch to something higher capacity for most days, but the micro 9 has served me well for a couple years now. Perhaps you have larger hands than i do though. I also put on Hogue grips and mag base pads to get more of a grip
I agree, my first gun was a p365 I got for carrying. After going to the range and shooting a firearm for the first time I was blown away by how hard the recoil was to control. A week later I went and shot a friends full size Glock and I was having an amazing time shooting it. Just going to have to train with the 365 more
Some outstanding points. I fired a Ruger .380 twice. I'll never fire it again. The recoil was terrible. I was glad to go back to my Bersa .380 or one of my 9mm's. Thank you
This is why I am moving up to a mid size…..this is so accurate, hate shooting my LCP M….therefore i am always worried abt carrying it, although it concealed well, I am not not that good with it for all the reasons described. SPOT ON!
I’m a really small dude. About 110 lbs depending on my bowel movement. So I carried an m&p shield for 2 years, damn thing was a recoil machine for a micro 9. Graduated to appendix carry a Glock 17 and 19 depending on weather (really if I’m gonna be wearing a sweatshirt or not) but still universally both about the same size, almost. The Block is easy to control and i feel safer with 15-20 rounds and less recoil than being able to conceal carry in my swim trunks shirtless.

Paul Harrell is awesome. Alot of people will find him dry and boring, but I personally don't. I find his style to be quite refreshing compared to the norm on youtube.
Wish I could’ve found one when I was looking for my first gun last year. Love the versatility with being able to use the bigger mags if need be. Ended up getting a glock 48 though and still love it!
The G26 is what I consider a sub compact that shoots like a compact duty pistol. With a plus 2 OEM base plate, it gives most folks a full grip. The G26 is also one of those pistols that if you could only own one carry pistol. it would be one of of my top choices
@@Jarrow13 yea I have a Pearce grip extension on one and it’s my go to. Just enough grip for me to use and doesn’t really add to the profile when it’s under a shirt
Great article, I'm well int my 70s retired LEO and I'm glad to see this addressed. After shooting a lot and in search for just the right gun, I came to this conclusion for me at least and no longer own one; made my daughter happy as she LOVES my G43.

Spot on analysis in my opinion Few would mention that in the points to consider when purchasing EDC I also had a SIG P365 as EDC and for the points you clearly stated inclusive specifically number 5, I upgraded to a compact / duty sized P320 and P229 Legion. I've carried several different guns, from a full size 5” XD45 to a P238. Where I've landed is my Sig P938 in a pocket holster with 2 additional mags in another pocket. With cargo shorts or pants this works perfectly. I've lived in FL and GA and while carrying big guns is easy with mild or cold weather, carrying anything bigger is a hassle in the heat. Slipping the P938 into my pocket when I go out is easy. I find that the convenience factor means I manage to carry everywhere I can legally. With the big guns I'd often find myself leaving it home on hot days. The best gun ultimately is the one you actually bring to the gunfight. As far as shootability, I love it. It's basically a small 1911 so everything is familiar on it, and it’s a very reliable and accurate shooter. Recoil is manageable using loads with higher weight and lower pressures. Shooting 50 rounds or so per a practice session is the perfect amount before my hand or wrist starts to complain. Plus, I have a two tone (light slide dark frame) with rosewood grips which make it look pretty sweet and provides a great conversation piece when I talk with other gun owners. 😀
@@kchaney9735 Yes, we also have a p238 in addition to my p938 which my wife carries. I'm a bigger guy so the p938 is manageable for me and 9mm is just better ballistically (and the are lots of load options out there).
i really like my g43x. i learned to shoot on a 19 and other than it being a bit thinner, it's the same grip. you are also most likely to be in extreme close quarters if you're using your concealed carry weapon as compared to your home defense weapon, so im not sure a lot of these points make a difference for concealed carry
Good points Chris. Thanks for pointing out all the negatives of these tiny guns. With everyone raving about them, and they are appealing, I own a Sig P365 and a Hellcat, I prefer carrying my Glock 45 because I simply shoot it better , and that would be magnified under stress. Good info. Thank you.
That's why i carry ruger lcp2 22lr with 2 extra mags. I upgraded all springs, replaced for stronger mag spring, recoil spring, clean and lube it well after every time I shoot it, and use the most reliable 22 ammo. I practice with it more than 10 000 rounds (even pactice to ckear all type of malfuncions)and can do single ganded 5-7 headshots fron10 yards in a 2 seconds. I like 9mm gandguns only when they full size that weight around 42oz like Cenik rival S, or cz shadow 2.
I always recommend to new shooters/gun owners to get a compact like a Glock 19 or M&P 2.0 Compact. If you're going to own one gun, get a compact. If you're going to carry, get the biggest small gun you can comfortably carry (usually a micro). If you're going to solely carry outside the waistband or use it for home defense, get a full size or larger.
@@johnshepherd8687 generally I agree even though I've only owned & carried full size guns. If I were to step down, a 4" compact is probably as small as I'd want to go. But that said, nothing is written in stone and my mind could always change.
I tell people if they want to buy a gun to conceal carry start with a gun they can pocket, and then work up in size from there when they can afford another. The reality is most people will get something too large or uncomfortable compared to not carrying and then they will never carry. The small gun that is always carried is better than the compact or full size that is never carried.
@@colossalbreacker Pocket carry is the worst carry method for a person just starting out. Putting the pistol in action is much harder than the standard methods. OWB is the easiest to deploy. The other downside is that pocket pistols are uncomfortable and hard to shoot accurately. Throw in cold weather and even an experienced shooter will fumble around.
I have a P365 with an ambi-dextrous manual safety that I carry everyday in a leather OWB holster. My hands are small, so the gun fits me perfectly, as if SIG made the gun just for me. It is a little snappy, but that bothers you less the more practice you do. You have to condition your body and mind to “ignore” the recoil and noise. A young man was bragging about how great his 911 45 was, but couldn't carry it without making people nervous. To me, a concealed Micro 9 mm is more effective than any gun not carried. Since it is better to have a gun and not need it, than need a gun and not have it, CCW is more important than caliber or longer distance accuracy.
Nah, I wore a fanny pack for years while biking and didn't have any problems. I suspect that people have a natural respect for men on bikes wearing fanny packs.
Obviously I'm not saying that you shouldn't get one I'm just saying that there are some cons to go along with all of the pros of smaller pistols
A very informative video. I've been on the fence on whether to get a Micro-9 or not. I'm 56 and retired, my eyes aren't what they used to be, and w/the price of ammo and living on a budget, I don't practice as much. Thanks for the video buddy, I think a 4"-4.3" barrel works best for me in my situation.

Indeed. I absolutely wouldn’t carry anything bigger or heavier than a 365. I tried my CZ P-01 for about 2 weeks and it felt like an anchor. I love the gun but I detest carrying it. 16-20 ounces unloaded is my max.

The problem with big "Tactical" handguns for concealed carry is too often they either aren't actually concealed or not actually carried.
Having a full size handgun pretty much forces you into appendix carry for concealment which is wildly uncomfortable despite the liars that say it isn't. I have a p365xl and even with a holster claw it very slightly prints through my shirt. No way I could ever comfortably conceal a full size handgun. 10+1 and a 15rd spare mag is enough for me.

At 56 years of age, I went down from a full size 1911 to a Sig P365 due to the weight comparison and increased capacity. While I definitely shoot much better with a 1911, Beretta 92FS and my CZ Shadow 2, I just cannot tote that much weight around anymore. This is why an avid shooter, such as myself, goes to a micro 9. However, this was a great video for a newcomer to the shooting game. The micro 9’s definitely have a ton more bounce than a full size pistol. If you carry one, practice, practice, practice.

I have a Ruger SR1911 and a Springfield Armory A1 Mil Spec both top notch 1911 pistols but heavy and have to be holstered in a thick leather holster. I am a die hard.45 gun owner. I purchased a S&W M&P Shield .45 and it’s a great pistol alternative to the 1911 pistol. Amazingly the .45 Shield has very little recoil with a 3.3” barrel
Here's an alternate outline. My dad has basically destroyed his grip strength and hands doing concrete and foundation work for so many years. Rheumatoid arthritis carpal tunnel are two of many issues with his hands. I handed him a glock 19 and he struggled severely with running the action of the slide. Also had issues loading mags to capacity. He picked up a g43x and said it was overall easier to work the slide and grip the weapon. I just want him to be able to have something he can conceal yet still function it in a harsh moment. Maybe adrenaline kicks in and he racks the 19 slide with no issue. But I feel that his ability to regularly use the 43x over regular use of the 19 comes into play. Less shots but I know he can reload it with little issues. Better than trying to reload a larger pistol and having tons of medical issue fighting against you
Ever thought about using the S&W EZ shield? Easy racked slide and basically made for people with not as strong hands.

The 43x is what I went with. My hands are a bit long. Added talon grip then put hogue slip on with finger grooves over those. Night sites and shield 15rd mags.
It runs just as good as my big glocks and it's just as accurate out to 20-25yds.
The new Walther PDP-F series has a 20% easier racking slide, better grip than the PDP, and a closer trigger reach with the best stock trigger and accuracy right out of the box.

I don't know about that some small guns have a tendency to turn in your hand. The mini revolvers come to mind. Not to mention derringers. I can't believe they actually make a derringer that shoots 45-70 . Why would anyone ever want or need such a thing.

Good points here. Small guns are heavily promoted, especially to new shooters. Experienced shooters have found that extreme lightweight is a net negative, but this seems to be overlooked. Thanks for bringing this out.
Definitely a great video with great reasons. That being said if you live in a sh!tty state and have to conceal without printing then carry what you can. Just train with it and like he said realize the disadvantages.
I carried a G19 for many years as my Duty Weapon and a G26 as my Off Duty EDC but as I retired and became older (78), I found myself having a bit of difficulty handling these two handguns and I switched to the New Glock Slimline G43 & G48! Of these two, I found myself shooting better with the G48 and it felt more like a full size handgun! I was no longer accurate with the G43 so I sold it and I now only have my G48 which is much better for me at my age. I also go to my LGR one day every week and I have since purchased 4 .22LR handguns which I shoot very well and I am having more fun than ever and I save a bunch of money on ammo! Thank you Glock for this great Slim Line Model for Old Guys like me!
As someone who’s carried and fired full-size, compact, and micro, I’m not disputing these but I strongly feel they are totally subjective. I personally carry a hellcat for EDC and with time, practice, and training I don’t experience any of these.
Reasons you would want a micro 9:
1. According to the FBI, 44% of all handgun fights are from 0-5 ft. another 21% are from 5-10 feet, 15% are 11-20 feet. At those distances a long sight radius isn't necessary to put a bullet in a man-sized target.
2. They are easier to conceal and weigh less so they are more likely to be carried everywhere, particularly by women.
3. While it's true that a micro 9 is going to be a bit snappier than a full size pistol, it's certainly easily manageable, with proper technique, for all but the most timid shooters.
4. It's smaller size makes it more difficult for an attacker to get a good leveraged grip on the barrel of the pistol to take it away from you, using crav maga or other martial arts techiques.
5. It packs nearly as much punch as it's longer barreled brethren, to take down most attackers at short distances.
Clearly, there are pros and cons to each depending on the person and the situation -- different horses for different courses -- you know the thing.

I feel like race gun/competition shooters notice a lot of things that just aren't going to affect the average shooter. I could be wrong, but most shooters might go through a single box of ammo at the range, not nearly enough to feel strain on their trigger finger, and as long as the recoil doesn't physically hurt them they're not going to mind. In fact, I've noticed that the smoother shooting guns with less recoil tend to get called "boring" by newer shooters. They also aren't going to notice that it takes an extra half second to reload or gain sight picture. I hear the warning "you're not going to wanna practice with it" at gun stores all the time, but in my experience the ergonomics of the gun factor in very low in whether or not casual shooters take it to the range. Of course, when you own multiple guns and train for perfection regularly, you begin to notice and appreciate so many factors concerning gun handling, but the truth is that most of these factors are irrelevant to your average gun owner. As long as they can shoot it reliably without hurting themselves and they can carry it at work or in public without issue they are satisfied.
Definitely! I mean, look at the "distance" that the Honest Outlaw is shooting at. 50 feet. 95% of all "lawful, defensive, non-police involved shootings" occur within 30 feet or less. A 9mm micro compact is "more than adequate" for most people who have to shoot defensively from 30 or less. How many everyday citizens, are going to shoot a dangerous threat from 50 feet away? Most people would instinctively "seek cover" and wait until the threat got close enough to them, for them to get off a clean shot.
@@Scorch1028 depends on where you are. Sidewalks and streets are very long, so as you naturally separate from the target who might start running, you might hit that 10 yards, and you might be running while shooting as well. 5% isn't insignificant to train for as well

Micro 9s fit the bill for 7yds and in, point center mass and shoot till the threat is stopped. My wife won't carry something bigger than a g43 really unless it's in her purse, which the g43 is fine. She knows, and everyone should know, the limitations of a smaller pistol, if your target is farther than 25yds, close the distance or seek cover until they get closer to get a good shot off with that micro 9. Better self defense case, than blasting at a threat past 25yds... This ain't the movies lol Carries what's easiest for you but train for all scenarios

I’m a woman with small hands. I want a 9mm gun and was thinking about the shield plus. I’m going to a range and do their “try before you buy” to find the right one for me. Many ranges offer this and I’m glad for it.

As a smaller guy with small hands, the P365 fits my hand perfectly. Now, taking into account sight radius, etc., I will admit that I can shoot lights out with something like the Canik TP9SF. But, I still shoot the P365 fairly well, and for self-defense, I'm not target shooting, I'm stopping the threat. I feel confident that I can do that with the P365, or I flat wouldn't trust my life to it. Bigger hands are probably going to be better off with something else. No one pistol is perfect for everyone, so it's good that there are choices out there!
I recommend getting your slide milled for a red dot optic. I put the Holosun 507K on mine so sight radius doesn’t matter anymore

I have bigger hands but I’m not the largest person, so I went with the 365XL because it’s still small enough to carry when I wear nearly anything. But like you said…. Great that there’s an huge selection.
Not to mention, a lot of companies are including different size backstraps for their smaller pistols as well as the full sized. Makes most pistols comfortable for a wider range of hand sizes.
I’m not a big guy so the SIG p365 feels perfect for me. Plus if it’s not comfortable to carry I won’t carry as I’ve learned.
I have a P365 and now also a GX4 for carry in the warmer months, or situations I just can't carry the full sized. Sometimes I even take one of those backpacking simply because it's lighter than the full sized. I'm really glad the weather is starting to cool off and I'll more comfortably be able to carry the full sized again though.

Having lots of shooting experience, I got a micro 9 as opposed to a duty pistol for two main reasons.
A. Carrying a gun in the environment I work in is taboo and getting caught would ostracize me. Thus the smaller the better.
B. I would be carrying IWB, and therefore would t want to jam a duty sized pistol between my belt and my hip.
If you’re ok open carrying, then definitely get a duty pistol. But if you have the experience, don’t be afraid of getting one.
In short, get the tool you need for the job you’re doing.
Another pro for the small guns is pocket carry during the winter. It may take too long to dig out from under heavy layering.
I’ve been surprised how much I’ve come to love and be comfortable with my 43x. That was a pretty happy place for me in regards to small, but shootable.

I have had several larger carry guns and recently bought a Kimber Micro 9 and I love the pistol. Mine shoots great and very accurate for self defense and even though I went from striker fired back to a 1911 style, it doesn’t bother me to carry cocked and locked. I also like the fact I can shoot this pistol one handed and I feel very comfortable using this as my daily carry and in a life saving situation.
Bought one a few months back and I struggle with a good grip on it. My pinky is completely off and ring finger is only half way. I’m only able to get a complete grip with my middle finger.
@@jeffw5733they do make slightly longer mags for it…if yours has the flush fitting 6 round mag they make a 7-round with a pinky extension…they also make an 8-round with a slightly longer pinky extension. Obviously makes the grip longer and harder to conceal, but if you can’t get a good grip you’re probably not shooting it very well or very much. Hope that helps you!
Everything you say is true, but it goes back to the old saying "The small gun on your hip is more useful than the big gun in your safe." Do you actually carry the G34 concealed. If you do, congratulations. But most people can't. And it the end, it all comes down to training. It's nice if the shooting is fun, but training is to a purpose, and if someone carries, that purpose is to be able to employ their CCW gun as well as possible.
Also, my main point of comparison for these guns is not bigger autos, but snubbie revolvers. People have been carrying J-frames and the like for something like a century, and they're even harder to handle and shoot than these micro 9s.
Yeah I bought a 1911 bc I loved the looks of it and I know they're great guns but only a day or so of having it I knew I had to get a subcompact. The 1911 with 5 inch barrel is way too big to do anything with but shoot for fun or grab for home defense. The guns weight pulls your damn pants down. I ended up buying a sub for concealed carry and it's way easier to carry. The one I bought, the vp9sk, came with 3 mags too and all are different sizes. Theres longest one has a spot for your pinky and the short one is flush with the grip and then of course there's one that's in between so you have one for whichever fits you best.
Got plenty of newer semi autos but even I still use the classic J frame snub on my ankle as a backup gun. It’s there cause it’s dead nuts reliable

I carried both on and off duty for many years. I started carrying a 4" revolver on duty then a 2.5" round butt version of the same pistol. Later carried a 70 series commander, then Officers model. All full steel guns. Later in career went to the Glock and settled on the 19 for both on and off duty. Now at almost 7 decades, I no longer want to deal with the weight of a "compact". The new micro 9's are fine for me. I practice with it but do not shoot them for fun. It is a primarily carry comfortably and shoot if needed or just maintain skill level. For fun I shoot 22's or full size revolvers and semi's.
You must be about 60 years old( like me) In the 1960's and 1970's the 4inch S&W model 19 was the patrol officer's duty weapon, detectives carried snub nose .38 special revolvers under their coats.
Far too close to 70 AFAIAC. Used the 66 no dash for duty and 66-1 2.5" off duty.
Only 47 and I carried Smith 686 on duty and a 640 backup/off duty. That was in the early 90s.
The only set-up I've found that I've been able to carry 100% of the time is my p365, 12 round mag, in my helikon-tex possum fanny pack. Every day, everywhere. It isn't the most tactical, fastest, accurate, etc etc etc, but I always have it with me and that's worth a lot.
I agree with what you said at the end about the G26. In my hands, it defies physics because I actually shoot it faster and more accurately than my G19. This is true even with the flush magazine, though I carry it with the factory 12 round extension for ease of getting it out of the holster.

Depends. I have huge hands. Although I can shoot it, I don’t shoot it well. It kinda floats in my hand. And it’s not the recoil as I shoot my 2.5” sp101 in 357 mag just fine. Bottom line is no matter the size (big or small) if you can’t meld with the gun, you’ll struggle to shoot it well.

I personally carry a Glock 17 in appendix position with an extra mag. I have a friend who carries an HK P30 long slide with a mag well and an RMR in the same appendix position. It comes down to what you are willing to carry everyday and a proper holster for your body shape. My opinion is to carry the biggest gun you can and practice regularly, especially with drawing from concealment.
I agree with you, most people never practice drawing from concelment. I practice drawing at home for hours and again while shooting.
I cant convince myself to carry appendix for obvipud reasons lol.
If you're recommending home defense guns, your G34 is an amazing choice. Big, accurate, huge capacity, and lots of accessories that make it easier to use. But realistically speaking, I take one look at the G34 and say "no way I'm packing that". So maybe focus a little more on the viable carry gun: the midsized compact, something in the Glock 19 size range.
Beyond that, outstanding video, and thanks for pointing out the fifth issue. Especially given that under extreme stress, coordination goes to hell anyway.
I actually considered a micro 9, but I don't think they offer much advantage over the old S&W 6904 I already have. The micros might be a bit smaller, but the 6904 is an old friend that I've practiced with a lot.
I couldn’t ever find one of the micro Carry I could comfortably even hold let alone use. The 43x/48 was kind of bashed by some reviewers for the grip being G19 size but I think it’s perfect size for me and with the shield mags it has high capacity too. The 43x hit a sweet spot for me with size carry ability and capacity.
Haven't messed around with the 43 but I love my 26. Would be interested to see if there is much of a difference
@@geoffp9941 Basically same length on the grip, but smaller circumference for the 43. It's lighter, so snappier than the 26. Also, 6 rds for the 43 versus 10 (or more with any larger 9mm double stack mag) in the 26 make the 43 a non-starter for me. Love my 26, my 42, 43x and P365XL. All are great carry guns for different purposes.
Only thing about those Shield arms mags is that I just can’t bring myself to trust them. I know all the reviews say they are reliable but I just don’t trust anything other than the oem mags in my carry guns. You know the saying about opinions so whatever works for you have at it.
As of today mostly everyone went back on bashing the 43x. It's glocks hottest seller.
For a small auto I would prefer a .32 or .380. One thing I think people miss in regards to full size rounds in small light weapons is that you absolutely need to be able to use it well one handed and even weak hand. A gun you can handle in a two handed sporting stance may be much more of a problem when you are grappling or injured and have to use one hand.
These youtubers need to quit bashing people for not carrying 9mm. Some of these 380s chambered in 32, or 9mms chambered in 380 would be fire.
ANY firearm in a fight is better than NO firearm in a fight. Criminals do not want to get shot. They want unarmed victims. Just be proficient in what you carry. Carry what you can effectively use. Put the round where it can cause the perpetrator to rethink their actions. Avoidance, descalation and deterrence. Live by those ideas and hopefully you'll never have to use said firearm.
i tried the P365 in 380 at the range last week, much easier to handle and do follow up shots. maybe some of these manufacturers might follow Sig and make 380 barrels for their micro-compacts?
for even smaller guns, i've tried the LCP II, LCP Max, and Bodyguard 380, the kick is pretty significant. much harder to line up the next shot than even a 9mm micro compact. the heavier P238 is somewhat softer, though, but it's got a 1911 style layout and i think Sig discontinued it this year

I love my G2C. The pinky extension on the magazine gives you a really good purchase. And also the trigger guard has another spot to hold on to while pressing your left thumb on the "memory pad". Everything he's saying is accurate, but with enough practice you can alleviate trigger manipulation and as long as you grip the firearm tightly enough, it's very accurate. And small enough to conceal. So sub-compact is actually alot more manageable than a micro. The GX4 in my opinion is just a tad bit too small for a 9mm. Might as well get something really small for a pocket pistol to use as a backup. Like a Keltec .32 or a Beretta Tomcat. My 2 cents.

I’m curious as a law enforcement officer you most likely carried a Glock 17 right? Or some other full size duty pistol, I might be wrong and sorry if I am. If you have hands that are on the larger size, myself I have mammoth hands LMAO how was it training wise for you to adjust, what was the hardest part? Was it more so figuring out how to get a comfortable grip or getting used to the more snappy micro sized pistol(s)? I feel like for me it comes down to grip because my absolute unit sized hands make it nearly impossible to get a full comfortable grip on anything micro even with a pinky/plus one/two/three extension. I just can’t seem to get a good grip. Maybe you have some insight on if I just need to train more with micro pistols?
@@RichJord0331 I had to get used to wrapping my pinky under the magazine and keeping a sturdy grip. I’ve been carrying full size duty guns, but off duty it was Clock 26 for a long time. But recently I’ve carried the Sig P365 and the Springfield XDS. I like them but they’re small and drawing them is a little awkward cause of the small grip. I’ll qualify with the Hellcat Pro next month and start carrying it off duty from now on.
I wear my carry guns concealed around the house, doing yard work, etc. and have become very comfortable with them. Just a tip for anyone thinking about getting comfortable with their carry weapon/weapons.
I wear my carry gun at all times also. I carry a Glock 19 Gen 5. It’s considered a compact gun, but it seems like a full sized gun to me. Most of the time I don’t even notice that I am carrying it. If I take it off, I definitely notice the lack of extra weight on my waist. I also have a Springfield Armory XD-9 Sub-compact that is smaller and lighter but I have gotten used to the Glock. That gun almost never gets carried.
I carry my VP9 or VP9SK all the time. Another trick is to wear a larger size pants. If you wear 28 then consider buying size 30. Also the quest for quality holsters that are safe and comfortable helps.
Yes, wearing at home is a great way for one to get comfortable with your new companion, and also to learn how many different angles of body motion affect your carry.
Also, carry at home is especially beneficial to protect from home invasion. The first minutes after returning from the grocery store, or getting up in the middle of the night to get a glass of milk, those are times when your EDC should be C'd.
And I carry a micro-9, the Diamondback DB9 gen4, and I love it at the range and everywhere.

A few months ago I bought a Keltec P32 because there are many times I need to carry with complete concealment. My usual edc is the IWI Masada but I find that I carry the P32 about 30 to 40 percent of the time. I find that I am spending 2/3 of my practice time working with the P32 over my Masada because that gun is a lot harder to shoot well. I can get 4” groups with the Masada at 10 yards fairly easily where getting 4” groups at 15 feet is pretty difficult with the P32. It is much smaller with a worse trigger. All of which, makes accuracy much more difficult. Small guns are great for many purposes but they require a disproportionate amount of work. When you buy one you have to accept that situation and work to overcome that handicap. Outlaw, your videos are great as always, please keep up the great work. My wife asks that Mrs. Outlaw does a video aimed at women of smaller stature for shooting tips. Thanks again and blessed be.
Very well done video. I've been shooting handguns for over 43 years. My HK VP9SK suits my needs perfectly.
I am small-framed so in summer it’s difficult for me to properly conceal a large, double-stack weapon. So, I’ve experimented quite a lot with my present Kimber SOLO 9mm and with 125-147 grain handloads using slower powder, the recoil impulse is spread out significantly more and is noticeably LESS recoil than other, faster loads. I carry my SOLO every day, equipped it with CTC Laser grips, and watch maintenance on it closely. It doesn’t jam, is easy to fire VERY accurately, and with me, is really easy to carry and keep concealed. Now, in winter time, when it’s cold out, I will carry one of my full-size 1911’s as I can then conceal them under the heavier clothing. Just saying my experience.
My wife and I started a competition: her on the Ruger PC Charger with red dot and me with my S&W Shield Plus with iron sights. She's 4-1, but I like the challenge. Recently I went to the range solo, and I was better with my Plus than my M&P 2.0 (former CCW) for the first time. I also carry with the 13 Rd but practice my draw (mostly) with the 10 Rd. No matter what you carry, I think practice is key. And actually I think I may get a new trigger for my 2.0.
I'm also better with my Plus than my 2.0 9C. I think it's the trigger.
I have recently purchased a Springfield Hellcat in 9 mm that I absolutely love, it's designed to compete with the Sig Sauer P365 and boy does it deliver. I realize this is an old video. But the Springfield is worth it a good long look and test drive.
I agree with many of the things he says. I carry a hellcat. I chose it over the 365 because I like the trigger better, and the sights better. Agreed it is the snappiest 9mm I’ve shot. But I’m a man, it’s not that bad. I practiced and got used to it in about 50 rds. It’s so comfortable to carry. I don’t leave the house without it
I also have a Hellcat. I don't even notice the "snappiness" that weaker people complain about. I like the Hellcat because it's light-weight, easy-to-conceal, and it has a more than adequate ammo capacity. I live in a conceal carry-only state, so the last thing I need is a "heavy, bulky" clunk of metal stuffed into my waistband. At about 24 oz. (excluding the holster), the Hellcat is the heaviest handgun that I'd ever want to conceal carry. 95% of all defensive shootings occur at 30 feet or less, and that's well within the range for "most shooters" to accurately fire a Hellcat.
@@Scorch1028 I agree with everything you said. It’s the most comfortable gun I’ve ever carried. However, I do see what people say about it being “snappy”. It’s not bad, just a little more recoil than other guns I’ve shot. Like I said, after a box of ammo I was completely used to it. The sights and the trigger are what sold me on it.
Now, I have thought about going with a m&p shield plus. As soon as I get a chance to try one out, I might be trying that out for a new concealed carry
The Sig P238 manages recoil well, and is pretty damn accurate for it's size. Easy to conceal in the warmer months.
I think it is in the top ten carry guns.

When I introduce new shooters to handguns I usually hand them my Walther PPQ or HK VP9. Both are dead nuts accurate and very easy for new shooters to gain confidence with while learning the fundamentals.
I was shooting a 44 magnum during the pandemic due to ammo limitations. Just shot my walther pps for first time in 2 years. Felt like nothing. I found 44 magnum corrected all my flinching problems with small 9mm/45/40
Having just moved from an APX to a Hellcat recently, I've noticed a LOT of these observations myself. HO is spot on right. Still, for the time being I still think the increased carryability outweighs the cons. Though I may change my mind about that, it's worth giving the little 9 a solid year to see if I can be as good with that as I was with a larger carry weapon.

I carry the full size APX every day my favorite weapon but just got the springfield xdm elite 10mm but I guess they both about the same size I'm 6'3" 220 lbs though so 🤷🏿♂️
I got my first gun March 13 this year. Decided on a Masada Slim based on all the great reviews i saw and the attractive price. Dang, the first two weeks were very frustrating. That thing jumped in my hand like my cat when i try to give her a bath. No fun, period. So i decided to learn grip, then trigger control, then site picture, so the basics.
At the same time i bought a Stoeger STR9F. 4.7" barrel and all of the sudden i was getting direct success out of my dry fire practice. I got more accurate and it started to be fun. Next i bought a Tisas PX 9 Gen 3. Great gun and super fun to shoot. I still train every other day with my Masada S around 50 rds and i get better. But for fun, i shoot the full size and compact guns. They allow me to hit BE in a 4 - 6" group every 5 shoots up to 10 yds and for now, that is good enough. Eventually my grip strength will be good enough and my trigger manipulation capabilities will be on a level that i can carry the Masada S without the fear of having to use it. Passed my CC class, permit requested. Until i get it, i want to master the Masada S. I train once or twice a week on the range and dry fire at home whenever i can.

My CCW is a Sig P365 XL. It has a 3.7" barrel. For me, the Xtra grip size is perfect as well as the ergo. It fits my hand like a glove. I do not have to put an extended mag in just so I can hold it. 12+1 X 2. 12rd mags that fit flush. I also purchased Sigs 15rd mag for a backup. I purchased their Romeo Zero 6moa for it. Awesome for CCW. Conceals well with an AIWB kydex holder and claw.
I purchased a Tac Dev picatinny rail to mount a WML and purchased an OLight BALDR Mini 600lumen/green laser that is very bright. This I clip on at night for home defense. The laser allows me to shoot from almost ANY position. 1 handed. Over my shoulder. From behind the bed or sofa. From 0-7yrds this works for pretty much any self-defense scenario.1 pew-pew to rule them all. Peace and Freedom for All. Stay safe out there.
Also, I do have a CZ P-07 mostly stock. I put a lighter recoil spring in it. No RDS right now but I do have the OLight BALDR Mini 600lums/green laser to clip on if needed. It's mostly my Wally-Mart pew-pew .. just kidding 😇 Awesome for home D-Fence or CCW. Awesome pew-pew!
@G-Shack 1970 Hey there. The red dot is pretty useless for self-defense from 0-7rds out. If you ask someone who's been in a car jacking or mugging and had to use deadly force if they picked up their ' red dot ' before pulling the trigger, most would say I pointed and shot at that distance and did not acquire their dot or even lined up their iron sights. It's great for at the range or distances farther than that. And for LEOs. It is there if I need it and I train with it every day.
However, for home defense in a darkened room or low light, it is so easy to pick up my ' green dot ' and pull the trigger. The laser is bright enough in daylight that I find it faster than the ' red dot '. And I can shoot from ANY position. At my hip if I want. I do not have to look through a tiny piece of glass and have it up to my eye sight. I highly recommend a green laser dot. Try one and you will see what I mean.
And no, I am not ' lazy '. I train every day with both sights. I believe I am being ' smart ' because I have the best protection I can get for self-defense. Peace and Freedom for All. Stay safe out there.
@@amanhasnoname3447 Yeah, I've got the OLight BALDR Pro on my TP9SF and the green laser is nice and bright, and is definitely more suited to close range, sudden scenarios in that you just pick up that green dot almost instantly without having to get a sight picture...and you're right, I really can't stand the fact that most people ignore the fact that most self defense shootings are gonna be point shooting without even utilizing the sights in the first place.

Being able to carry a 9mm pistol on your person at all times is the PRO, especially in a country with a high crime rate like here in South Africa.
And honestly, my G43 is perfectly shootable. After a while of shooting micro nines, you adapt and shoot them almost as good as bigger handguns; this is my experience .
Agree I carry my G48 mos all day everyday AIWB and it is comfortable and works for me and I shoot it extremely well! I don’t use the Shield Arms S15 either… Just OEM with an extra 10rd mag in my pocket or mag caddy. Stay safe out there

Agree that the handgun you decide on purchasing, especially in South Africa, means it will be your go to handgun always with the gun laws. Personally I work with full size pistols, and for that reason would go for something that is similar to those. Pietro Beretta Mod 92 FS, is heavyish for my body structure, whereas the Beretta PX4 Storm feels to light at times. But then again, I can hide them both on my person, relatively well. I just need to put on one of the smaller grips to avoid readjusting my hand to engage or disengage the HOD, and mag release.
Keep with what you're familiar and practice with for consistency. And also, if you have friends with different handguns, never say no to shooting them. Might just become your secondary weapon if your friend gets incapacitated. Knowing the trigger and reset is always good.

This is why I love my FN509 Midsize or any compact pistol similar to the Glock 19. They strike up the best balance, in my opinion, between ease of carrying and all of the factors mentioned in this video.
That is a good run down. I got a G43 when it came out. Yes, I have shot a lot with it. Drills, yes, movement, reloads, etc. I love it. It is accurate enough to get center mass 25yd. I have gotten fairly consistant at that.
Here is my logic. I like the gun, it is paid for, I invested training time in it. I am 5'7", 185lbs (fire plug shaped). Concealment matters. Carry 2 extra mags and I feel I have enough ammo. The recoil does not bother me.
I spent 28yrs in the Army infantry, am 60 now, and I have a ton of weapons training. I like the small guns because the conceal best for me. Carry what works for you, whatever that may be. Only you can say what that is or is not, good, bad or otherwise.
Two extra magazines?? I think you've been watching too many movies. A couple of round is all that's needed.
In order to save 15 minutes:
1. Recoil
2. Ease of use
3. Less accurate
4. You won't practice with it.
5. Hard to acquire firing grip from holster.

I agree. Over the years, I have slowly went bigger and bigger. I started with the Shield. I still carry it but I prefer the compact size over the micro.
The point about needing to keep shooting a micro compact frequently is spot on. When I got my P938 as my primary carry gun, I made it my primary range gun, too. I shoot it so much that getting all three fingers onto the grip of a gun feels weird.
You have to put the time in with the micro pistols if you plan to carry them. They will become fun to shoot, by the way.
I recently purchased the Ruger LCP Max and the Shield Plus. I love both of them. They are both easy and fun to shoot for micro compacts

You want one for the times you'd leave the bigger one at home. They are not "good" guns, but they are a lot better than no gun. They should not be the primary carry option for most people though.

Some of them are very good guns. They have become the primary carry option for most people. and probably the vast majority of women. I am more accurate with my P365XL with a Holosun than with some of my bigger guns. Maybe for somebody who shoots as much as Honest Outlaw, the minis are just too small, but for most of us, I think it's just like any other change.

CCW is not about not about “having fun shooting” and pinching yourself. It’s about protecting yourself and others in a bad situation.
An inexperienced shooter shouldn’t, and probably won’t be concealed carrying.
I do understand recoil and ease of use and accuracy can effect shooting in a bad situation, but again an experienced shooter isn’t worried about that.
@@bjs301 A small gun is always going to be harder to shoot than a similar quality gun that's larger. It's true that they've become the primary gun for a lot of people, but it's also true that most people that carry don't practice nearly enough, and don't realize what they are sacrificing. Not knowing what you are missing doesn't mean that you aren't missing anything. These guns have an important niche to fill. They've are also being used outside that niche much of the time. I'm not bashing anyone who carries one. I carry one sometimes. Sometimes it's even the Taurus one. Sometimes it's the best gun for the situation. If it's your only gun it's your best gun for every situation. But I hope people at least stop and consider the advantages of a larger gun. If I'm ever in a situation where I have to use one of my micros I'll probably wish it was a full-sized. But then again there's a chance I'll also wish it was a rifle.
My first gun was a ruger LC9s and it was very hard to shoot as a beginner. I wanted it because it was so small and easy to carry. Its a great gun if you're experienced but not good for beginners. Learn from my mistake, go for a full size if you're a beginner
I started with a CZ Shadow 2 just because I realized inherently that being a newbie, I wanted a very reliable gun that was easy to gain accuracy with. This made shooting fun, practical and confidence-building. I have since bought several other pistols, and have learned to adapt to their differences. Building that confidence early, and enjoying practicing set me up for success. You are spot on.
Every LC9 I've fired was a POS. Unreliable, inaccurate, and if my life depended on it I'd rather chop off my left arm with a butter knife and use it as a club than rely on an LC9
@@Brandon-Kraemer Yeh the LCP Max is much much better than that gun. LC9 feels like it's reaching just for the sake of having at least SOMETHING to compete with the micro 9's (not realizing that the LCP Max is a great competitor in the micro 9 market all by itself)

Find the gun that fits you, practice with it regularly, and carry when you are able. I like my P365, my wife prefers her Shield. Most days, however, I have an LCR in 38Spl.
The small guns have their place and will get the job done inside 7 yards.
Anything more than 10 yards away and I'm trying to get out of the situation, not wade into it.

I carry a 365. I keep a good group at 25'ft. I keep a really good group at 15'ft with a chest sized target. Or even a cantaloupe size target. It's made for a specific purpose. Ease of carry. It's made to get me out of a pinch. A pinch that will most likely never happen. I have larger guns for when/if shit hits the fan and you can benefit from size and capacity and for when concealment is no longer a concern. Or to go to the range with.
I've been carrying and shooting handguns in civilian, competitive, and police roles for 50 years, and owned my own range and shot daily. So I have a fair amount of experience But that experience doesn't last forever and things change. When I retired to Florida, I decided to carry a small 9mm pistol. At the time, the high capacity micros had not hit the market. I decided to take out my compact 9's to see which I shot best when placed under reasonable time pressure and distance, shooting from a variety of positions. I took my smallest pistol, a Kahr PM9, a Glock 43, and original Shield, a Walther PPS M2LE, a Springfield XD-s, an M&P Compact, and a Glock 26, and ran myself through the same courses courses of fire, which ranged from 3-25 yards. I didn't choose that last distance at random. I was trained many years ago at Gunsite by the late Jack Furr that I should practice on the calm square range at roughly twice the distance that I wished to be competent at. Jack taught that the effects of stress and fear would cut my abilities in half in the real world. Having been under fire, I find that to be true. I figured 12-15 yards real world would suffice.
What I found was that I really could not turn in a satisfactory performance under stress with either the Kahr or the G43, even though they were both accurate in slow fire. Both were fine guns, but my abilities had slipped. I was surprised to find I did not have sufficient hand strength to operate the slide on either in an emergency. I did well with the Shield, the PPS M2, and the Springfield XD-S, all of which were just slightly larger than the Kahr or G43. None of these was a challenge to conceal. But the real star of the show was the Glock 26, and the runner-up was the M&P Compact. These two shot like a full-sized gun. I chose the G26, but soon after, I had to provide my best friend something to protect himself with and loaned him the G26. The M&P Compact wasn't mine. So I chose the Shield. I've been carrying that ever since. I shoot it well out to 25 yards under pressure, and if I take my time can get hits out to 50 yards. I carry it with the 8 round magazine in it because it helps me draw it better. I carry one or two spare 8 round magazines (they are hardly noticeable in a good pouch). And, even with my arthritis I can rack the slide on the Shield.
This was my selection process nd it seemed reasonable for me. It may not be yours. But I did find to my surprise that fairly small increases in size and weight can result in you getting a much more shootable handgun that will probably be just as concealable as a tiny pistol that you are a marginal performer with. People ask me all the time when I'll buy a Shield Plus. I probably won't because I'm done chasing capacity. I leave my place each day with 25 rounds of 9mm on board and I think that's enough for this grumpy old man, But I do like the Shield Plus. Another thing to consider is dialing back cartridge- power. For example, while I did not shoot the Glock 43 well, this was not the case with the Glock 42 in .380. That handgun was a joy to shoot and I did very well with it. I think that pistol is worth a look.
I'm a revolver guy but I like to think of the micro 9's as the equivalent to the J frame. Fun to carry and shoot, but takes a lot more practice to become accurate with.
#5 is an excellent point. For a while I carried a Taurus G2C, I trained with it & put well over 2,000 rounds through it. However, I upgraded to a Glock 43X because it fits my bear paw hands better (I’m a big dude like you, Chris), and more importantly I could get markedly improved purchase on the pistol straight from the holster with less adjustment. The 43X is about as small as I’m willing to go for precisely this reason. I find myself using my support hand, post-draw, to tweak my grip as I present & aim, sometimes to a detrimental level. The 43X is a small enough pistol (for me) to comfortably conceal, while reliably drawing from my IWB holster AND getting sights on quickly. Makes a huge difference.

This tracks precisely with my experience. Bought Hellcat OSP in 2020...spent 2 years trying (and failing) for consistent shots/groups at 5 yards with red dot. Snappy, difficulty finding comfortable left hand grip, and "crunchy" factory trigger. Rented P365X 3 weeks ago, and was more accurate/consistent at 10 yards with unfamiliar gun and iron sights. Traded the Hellcat last week for the 365XL. First range outing with it was a revelation...I left the range NOT feeling frustrated with my shooting.
For some reason all of the Springfield polymer striker fired pistols have atrocious handling characteristics.

On of my favorite small handguns is the Kahr CW9. They aren't "micro", but they aren't as large as a subcompact. Great sized grip, very thin, and my trigger finger rests perfectly. Very easy to conceal carry. Being double action only is a great "safety" since it requires a very deliberate trigger pull to shoot, but it is smooth and not terrible at around 6.5 lbs pull.
I've one of the Kahr PM40 I bought as back up for a Glock 23. I was able to qualify with it at the SO, but I changed to a Glock 27 for magazine compatibility,but also trigger pull commonality. The Kahr is smooth, but I just couldn't tell when about to fire. The Glocks have a tiny bit of a wall, and I can tell when it's about to fire. If I didn't have to qualify with the Glock, I'd have carried the Kahr, no problem.
But if you can hit with them they are like Lays potato chips, " You just can't have one "
Right on the money. I started with Hellcat, got a P365, and two MP Shield plus's. they are bigger than my Kahr 9mm, but excellent to carry.
If you miss your target on range . You could be hitting somebody you don't want to in a situation. Close range someone will also grab at your pistol. Try to keep the Gap if possible , during home intrusion too. situation

Have several micros all in 9mm and all works definitely very well on on my small hands but will prefer always to carry a compact. So far, my favorites are the G43X and my second the Walther PPSM2.
Walther PPSM2 is a great single-stack gun. Don't carry it as much these days due to capacity, but not giving it up any time soon.
Dude, (I really enjoy your videos), I have a P365 for EDC. It's fine. I'm 6'2". One of the points of concealed carry is the "concealed" part. I can shoot well at all practical distances. All one needs is a little regular practice. Keep up the good work.
I csrry a p365 and I absolutely love it. As a smaller guy carrying a full size and not printing the entire thing is pretty difficult.
Will say it does recoil quite a bit and I do use the 10 rounder with the small grip space but overall very positive reviews from me. I'm definitely not as accurate with it as I am with a full sized but I can look past that with the pros.
Same reason I lean towards my 365, I have a problem with printing with bigger guns.
Also, recoil on the 365 really isn't bad, especially with the 12rd mags, or the 'X' size grip. With the longer grip it's much easier to hold on to and eliminates some of that mag bite problem.

The Pierce 10 rd mag pinky extension gives almost as good a grip as the Sig 12 rd (actually 11) if you want to get as small as possible.

Something for new shooters to consider irrespective of gun size is the ammo, specifically bullet weight. Of course there’s going to be exceptions to rule but generally speaking a heavier bullet will have less muzzle velocity resulting in less felt recoil.
Also I’m not surprised that the Ruger has most felt recoil of the micro nines. My wife had a Ruger LCP when she complained it hurt to shoot it I was like WTF it’s a .380 for crying out loud. Then I shot it… needless to we sold it along with more than a 1/2 box of ammo.
You have that backwards heavier rounds have always, across different platforms produced more recoil.
Most 380s have more recoil, not less than 9mm. The bullet and powder load is slightly smaller, but the guns are usually considerably smaller.
Bullet weight can influence recoil, but weight isn’t the only factor. Mass x Velocity = Momentum.
I think the decision to carry a micro 9mm is strictly a personal decision based on experience. I was a police officer for 32 years and a long time firearms instructor. One of the best off-duty and secondary weapons I own is a Smith & Wesson Shield. For me, this is a perfect carry gun.

Agreed. I'll still train with my Hellcat and P365, but they're not my favorite to shoot (great for conceal carry though). If I'm going to the range I'll have a much better time using my larger pistols.
Same. My go-to warm weather carry is LCPMax, and I'm similar size/frame to Chris. I don't practice NEARLY as much as he does (really, who does?) but I do roughly twice a month and am confident that I'll hit what I aim at and miss what I'm not aiming at.

I’ve been selling guns for a living for a little over a year at this point so I’ve seen a few different ones and it’s been my favorite by far. So much so I picked one up, it’s my carry gun, and I’ve put a little money into it to tweak it into exactly what I want. Everyone is different and you may not agree with me but humor me and at least look into it. Sights are amazing and the trigger is good, not to mention capacity to size ratio
@@JacksonWalter735 It's an improvement over my original LCP but just baaarely bigger, and 4 rounds more in the mag. Not to mention the trigger and sights are a lot better.
Overall I like it quite a bit. Something about those other 4 rounds. Makes you feel.. "armed".
My two tips for packing a bigger gun would be.
1. Quality stiff 1.5 inch belt
2. Quality leather owb pancake holster
3. Flannel shirts
I carry my Canik Mete sfx this way and it's hardly in the way or uncomfortable for about 8-10 hours of the day. People pay no attention hardly so carry what you want, and who cares if it prints a little, unless you're in a highly populated area or just have to remain totally concealed for work.. i'd always pick full/compact size.

sheeeet... I carry a glock 21 or a glock 23 gen 5 with a loose tank top or tshirt in a iwb kydex holster with not to loose not to tight cargo shorts OR golf shorts. I do use a 1.5 jukemo belt thought.
All good reasons why I’m still carrying my J Frame S&W in retirement, 100% reliability. I got my first J Frame in 1968 & have been shooting them ever since. My EDC is a 340PD, not much fun at the range, but I also have a Model 60 that gets plenty of range time.
Its hard to beat the 340 pd at 12 oz.'s . I always have it on me because I hardly notice it. Plus,you can shoot it from inside your pocket...try that with a micro semi-auto lol..no way
Having medium sized hands, I love my Ruger Max-9 and my Ruger LCP Max both with 10 round mags with pinky extensions. I agree that you need to shoot them often to get the feel down but after a couple hundred rounds in each, I can shoot an accurate group at 15' with both eyes open. That's really what I purchased them for.
Yes, and pinching the “shit” out of yourself is a real problem with the Kimber micro-9!

Ive never pinched myself with my Kimber micro 9. Im planning to switch to something higher capacity for most days, but the micro 9 has served me well for a couple years now. Perhaps you have larger hands than i do though. I also put on Hogue grips and mag base pads to get more of a grip
I agree, my first gun was a p365 I got for carrying. After going to the range and shooting a firearm for the first time I was blown away by how hard the recoil was to control. A week later I went and shot a friends full size Glock and I was having an amazing time shooting it. Just going to have to train with the 365 more

I love my GX4. But these are some valid points. Still, I’m likely to rarely carry if it’s any bigger than a micro 9.
I do love my hellcat. This definitely reminded me to work on my draw practice.
Some outstanding points. I fired a Ruger .380 twice. I'll never fire it again. The recoil was terrible. I was glad to go back to my Bersa .380 or one of my 9mm's.

This is why I am moving up to a mid size…..this is so accurate, hate shooting my LCP M….therefore i am always worried abt carrying it, although it concealed well, I am not not that good with it for all the reasons described. SPOT ON!
I’m a really small dude. About 110 lbs depending on my bowel movement. So I carried an m&p shield for 2 years, damn thing was a recoil machine for a micro 9. Graduated to appendix carry a Glock 17 and 19 depending on weather (really if I’m gonna be wearing a sweatshirt or not) but still universally both about the same size, almost. The Block is easy to control and i feel safer with 15-20 rounds and less recoil than being able to conceal carry in my swim trunks shirtless.
Content like this, is the reason I don't go out of my way to watch any other "Gun Guys" on UA-cam... 'Nuff said!!!...

Paul Harrell is awesome. Alot of people will find him dry and boring, but I personally don't. I find his style to be quite refreshing compared to the norm on youtube.

Wish I could’ve found one when I was looking for my first gun last year. Love the versatility with being able to use the bigger mags if need be. Ended up getting a glock 48 though and still love it!

G26. Yes!!!!!!!
The G26 is what I consider a sub compact that shoots like a compact duty pistol. With a plus 2 OEM base plate, it gives most folks a full grip. The G26 is also one of those pistols that if you could only own one carry pistol. it would be one of of my top choices
@@Jarrow13 yea I have a Pearce grip extension on one and it’s my go to. Just enough grip for me to use and doesn’t really add to the profile when it’s under a shirt

Great article, I'm well int my 70s retired LEO and I'm glad to see this addressed. After shooting a lot and in search for just the right gun, I came to this conclusion for me at least and no longer own one; made my daughter happy as she LOVES my G43.
Theses guns are fine for cc. Accuracy and distant is not an issue in cqc.
Until you are defending against a mass shooter at 50 yards. Not every defensive shooting is a 3 yard encounter.

I also had a SIG P365 as EDC and for the points you clearly stated inclusive specifically number 5, I upgraded to a compact / duty sized P320 and P229 Legion.

I've carried several different guns, from a full size 5” XD45 to a P238. Where I've landed is my Sig P938 in a pocket holster with 2 additional mags in another pocket. With cargo shorts or pants this works perfectly. I've lived in FL and GA and while carrying big guns is easy with mild or cold weather, carrying anything bigger is a hassle in the heat. Slipping the P938 into my pocket when I go out is easy. I find that the convenience factor means I manage to carry everywhere I can legally. With the big guns I'd often find myself leaving it home on hot days. The best gun ultimately is the one you actually bring to the gunfight.
As far as shootability, I love it. It's basically a small 1911 so everything is familiar on it, and it’s a very reliable and accurate shooter. Recoil is manageable using loads with higher weight and lower pressures. Shooting 50 rounds or so per a practice session is the perfect amount before my hand or wrist starts to complain. Plus, I have a two tone (light slide dark frame) with rosewood grips which make it look pretty sweet and provides a great conversation piece when I talk with other gun owners. 😀
I have a p238 as well. I've been thinking about getting the P938. Is caliber the reason why you carry it over the p238?
@@kchaney9735 Yes, we also have a p238 in addition to my p938 which my wife carries. I'm a bigger guy so the p938 is manageable for me and 9mm is just better ballistically (and the are lots of load options out there).

i really like my g43x. i learned to shoot on a 19 and other than it being a bit thinner, it's the same grip. you are also most likely to be in extreme close quarters if you're using your concealed carry weapon as compared to your home defense weapon, so im not sure a lot of these points make a difference for concealed carry

I love my GX4. For me, it’s perfect for home defense since I live in an apt and for up close and dirty. And it was budget friendly for me.
That's why i carry ruger lcp2 22lr with 2 extra mags. I upgraded all springs, replaced for stronger mag spring, recoil spring, clean and lube it well after every time I shoot it, and use the most reliable 22 ammo. I practice with it more than 10 000 rounds (even pactice to ckear all type of malfuncions)and can do single ganded 5-7 headshots fron10 yards in a 2 seconds.
I like 9mm gandguns only when they full size that weight around 42oz like Cenik rival S, or cz shadow 2.
I always recommend to new shooters/gun owners to get a compact like a Glock 19 or M&P 2.0 Compact.
If you're going to own one gun, get a compact.
If you're going to carry, get the biggest small gun you can comfortably carry (usually a micro).
If you're going to solely carry outside the waistband or use it for home defense, get a full size or larger.
I think this is the closest to the perfect summation.
The compact is the optimal size for trading off size, weight, capacity and ballistic performance.
@@johnshepherd8687 generally I agree even though I've only owned & carried full size guns. If I were to step down, a 4" compact is probably as small as I'd want to go. But that said, nothing is written in stone and my mind could always change.
I tell people if they want to buy a gun to conceal carry start with a gun they can pocket, and then work up in size from there when they can afford another. The reality is most people will get something too large or uncomfortable compared to not carrying and then they will never carry. The small gun that is always carried is better than the compact or full size that is never carried.
@@colossalbreacker Pocket carry is the worst carry method for a person just starting out. Putting the pistol in action is much harder than the standard methods. OWB is the easiest to deploy. The other downside is that pocket pistols are uncomfortable and hard to shoot accurately. Throw in cold weather and even an experienced shooter will fumble around.
I have a P365 with an ambi-dextrous manual safety that I carry everyday in a leather OWB holster. My hands are small, so the gun fits me perfectly, as if SIG made the gun just for me. It is a little snappy, but that bothers you less the more practice you do. You have to condition your body and mind to “ignore” the recoil and noise. I can block out the recoil and noise from my Glock 30 45ACP and my Ruger SR1911 45ACP CMD. Practice, practice, practice. - Pistol Pete
Totally agree with you. For me, the P365 is the perfect concealed carry gun.
A young man was bragging about how great his 911 45 was, but couldn't carry it without making people nervous. To me, a concealed Micro 9 mm is more effective than any gun not carried. Since it is better to have a gun and not need it, than need a gun and not have it, CCW is more important than caliber or longer distance accuracy.

Nah, I wore a fanny pack for years while biking and didn't have any problems. I suspect that people have a natural respect for men on bikes wearing fanny packs.
