      Is it true that these smaller tube amps lack low end compared to amps with full-sized tubes?

    • @052RC
      @052RC 16 днів тому

      @@kenjicarlos8402 There's more to it than just how big the amp is. In most cases, this is what's happening with bass and tube amps. There are 2 ways to make a tube amp distort/overdrive. Most of the distortion is made in the preamp, and is done with gain. You turn the gain up until the input tubes can't continue to play clean, and the overdriven tubes distorts the signal itself.
      You can also get your power tubes to distort, but it doesn't work the same way. Gain controls can only be placed on the input of a component. Volume controls are placed on the output. Only gain can distort the signal, a volume control can't. All a volume is, is a variable resistor. Its a passive device, and can't change the signal in any way, unlike gain. The problem is, you can't use excessive gain to distort your power tubes, all you can do is attenuate them with with volume. Since you can't distort the signal directly with gain, like in the preamp, you get the power tubes to distort by pushing them to failure. Its just like in your home or car stereo. If you set the volume too high, you get to a point where the system can't play any louder, and the sound starts to brake up. The main concept is you distort the signal itself in the preamp. The signal then goes through your power amp unaltered. If you want power tube distortion, you turn the volume up until the tubes fail. When you push a tube amp too hard, the tubes don't have enough power to play clean. The lower the frequency, the harder the power amp has to work to play it. And that's where your bass goes. You're pushing the power tubes too hard.
      The most common way to deal with poor bass quality as a result of power tube distortion, is to put some type of overdrive pedal before the input on your preamp, like a tube screamer. It helps to tighten up the bass so it sounds normal.

    I met John Fields at the Namm show 15 years ago, AWESOME guy, we talked for like an hour at their booth! Honestly, I love Peavey amps, they are like what you want Mesa Boogie to be, but never are. It takes like 10 seconds to dial in a Peavey, instead of 20 years like with Mesa :D Lately I've been hoping Peavey would maybe do what ENGL and PRS are doing now, which is putting full size 6L6/EL84 tubes in their lunchbox amps. I seriously think that MOST people are buying 15-50w amps, and while the micro EL84 amps are awesome, they don't typically have the "oomph" of the bigger bottle bros. Peavey, give us a 6505, 3120, Invective 25/50 like the ENGL Fireball 25. Also, lets be honest, EVERY modern amp should have a TS style boost built-in.

    It sounds great from here. I just got an Orange Micro Terror 20. It is soooo simple yet can power a 4x12 with lots of headroom and tone for 150 new. Not sure how much this Invective is but it is a great brand and has some killer metal features too. Needless to say.....The amps today are waaay better than what we were jamming on as kids. My first amp was a Gorilla 10 watt with an 8" speaker. I now have a Line 6 240 HD mkii. Small and portable yet quite powerful for any application. My dream amp is an ENGL Fireball 50 so naturally I am very curious to maybe hear your opinion on their 20 watt head that they sell for 1300 bucks. jeez... Now you see why I have a modeler.... Ouch. :)

    Its got that hollow mid snarl that evh amps have as well. You either love it or don't care for it. After comparing with the mini mesa- mesa wins for overall fullness in tone and sounds like an actual amp. Distortion quality is less cheap sounding (like a distortion pedal)plus way way less amp noise. Imo anyways tone is always in the ear of the beholder.

      @@belligerentamateur I know this is a late response but the LBX heads can absolutely keep up with a drummer and full band. Though I'm not a fan of EL84s....which is why I sold my LBX2.

    i don't what it is about this amp but sounds very... fake or boxy to me. i don't know how to describe it but it's lacking a certain frequency that just makes it sound lackluster to me.

    Can someone please do an amp review and not use just the low E and low A strings? Is that how people play guitar currently. That’s not playing guitar.

    This amp absolutely sucks, it's fizzy and congested and lacks low end past 4/10 on the master volume, the low end just seems to vanish when you turn it up. And good luck having and chord definition with this thing all the fizz will mask your notes into a washy mesh, even if you dial down the presence and gain. Don't get this amp if you want clarity, if you just wanna do caveman riffs then its probably fine.
