I've never seen anyone create this much good will for peavey and show so many of their older amps fairly and professionally. They should hire you
Because a lot of other amp brand owners always thought Peavey's we're junk etc. When infact a lot of Peavey's sound amazing out of the box and built like a tank, like all the old school Peavey's are. Now people are starting to catch on, with the Ultra's, XXX, JSX'S etc which I personally like better then my 5150 II. They have that different punchy tone that the 5150's don't have. Plus still to this day, the mentioned amps hang with or sound better then a large amount of what's out now for high gain amps.
Too band no one did this when they still made this stuff lol Peavey really screwed the pooch by never doing anything for you tube.
Well according to undercover boss it’s a shit place to work. Too bad too cause they’ve made some incredible amps.
@@untoldguitarist If you can find a Peavey Vypyr with the tubes, people talk a lot about how the 6505 and XXX voicings were really good
@@misterknightowlandco It doesn't help that their website looks like it hasn't been updated in 15 years
This is great, it's like an all-in-one 80s Marshall sound.
The best metal tone i ever got was from a peavey 30, with metalcore and a tubescreamer. Its a video on my channel, iron maiden like shred. The lead tone is just insane. So much so i bought one myself and is waiting for it now, with a cab with FANE speakers
I've been running a Classic 50 2x12 combo for metal on occasion live and in my studio. The secret I use is a DOD Overdrive Preamp 250 pedal with the gain at 1 o'clock and the level at 12 o'clock straight into the 'Normal' input. The 'Normal' channel is already set up to deliver as much of that 'metal' saturation as acceptable, and the pedal gives it that push and clarity so that every note is clear. Wish you hear it. You'd like it. Great video! Now I need that little head in my collection.
Always thought these were underrated. Can pretty much do anything and sounds killer
Awesome video awesome product I hate to gripe, maybe I'm just an idiot and just misunderstanding the language being used, but just to be clear there is no amp that has true power amp distortion going through the FX loop because true power amp distortion is post output transformer, trying to run that through the loop would create a hard-wired feedback loop LOL. you wouldn't be able to hear anything but a loud screeching sound.
I was in Leeway from 2010 to 2017. Cool to hear you play “Rise and Fall”
Bought one of these the other day with the 2x12 cabinet, still waiting for it to arrive. I could not find any videos of people boosting the lead channel, but took the chance it would sound amazing when you did. Thanks for confirming and giving some tips on dialing it in.
I think pushing old school style amps are even better sounding for high gain. George Lynch had one of the best high gain tones in history pushing an old plexi with distortion and overdrive pedals. Strangely enough I just remembered he used a Peavey Classic 100 on the Shadowlife tour! I kinda want one now. I once read people refer to peavey classics as between vox and Marshall
I have a Fender Performer 1000 hybrid head (one 12ax7 in the gain channel. The clean channel is that shimmering cleans that Fender is know for. The gain channel is surprisingly as well. Still, for high gain, I tend to use an Orange Super Crush 100. The Peavey classic line is a great bang for the buck!
One of the best budget high gain tones I've ever heard was the combo 2/12 30watt version of the Classic with believe it or not,....a $30.00 TC Electronics Dark Matter dist. as a boost in front. Absolutely bone crushing.
I was checking out this amp for cleans and I didn't expect a metal / high-gain tone out of this. Tone getting close to 6505... I love it
Just the logo change alone is worth the money!
It’s really cool and helpful that you properly demo all tones, clean, classic rock crunch, and high gain metal. And that you try different OD pedals, and different pickups, passives and EMG actives. As a Marshall guy myself, I’m impressed with what this amp can do. Keep up the good work!
Thanks man, glad you find the videos helpful!
Picked up a 4 button foot switch for this a few months ago from Sweet Foot Pedals so I could control reverb and fx loop as well. They work with a lot of other models too Requires 2 TRS cables to work. I would recommend for anyone who wants to control the other switches and doesn't want 2 2-button switches.
Interesting!
Never had a Peavey Classic, but I once had a Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue. It sounded great cranked for classic rock tones, but for high gain I would push with a DS-1.
If your hands (or feet) are always cold you might have a Thyroid problem
You honestly might be right. Suffering from it for about 10 years.
@@belligerentamateur That sucks :( you should definitely get a blood test. That’s one of the first signs of a thyroid problem.
The Classic 2x12 was a standard giging amp for us metal heads in the mid 90s. It was cheap, durable and handled a beer spill like a champ! I went through 2 50s and sometimes threw it on top of a v30 loaded crate 4x12 for the bigger shows. Cheapest great sounding bar rig I used back then. 🤘🏼
Classic workhorse amp for sure!
You were 100 percent right about it, when you set the gain to 6 i immediately heard that old-school Metallica sound ha!
That moment when the vintage mini head has better high gain tones than actual high gain heads. The tones in this video were great. I would rather rock this thing than the mini 6505 any day.
I bought the mini 6505 and played it with my gear for 10 minutes and immediately brought it back and bought the classic 20 instead. Couldn’t be happier lol
Hey Kyle a video idea if you are ever stuck. You mention boxey mids, I love hearing peoples words to describe sounds, Nolly is another person that's great for the words... it would be very interesting to hear examples of particular sounds you call ratty or boxey and work out what kinda eq curve is equivalent to these sounds. As I type this its setting in how much work this would be and also your reviews are providing examples 😂. So never mind. 😊
Hahaha. Maybe I can attempt it at some point when I've got a couple days
Oh my that sounded awesome I love that tone
Maybe I'm crazy but I think 12:15 with a bit more post production would sound pretty dang close to the first Mastodon record. Cue up Crusher Destroyer and compare. Good sounding little amp.
I have a2005 classic30 black tweed combo and it actually has a tube screamer ic chip right in the preamp!! I don't think they'll mind letting that out
very very jcm800ish. i like this amp :)
Hey Kyle, PULEAASSE, run an 80's Peavey Classic VTX or a Heritage through its paces! I'd love to see what you can coax out of these amps.
Is his name even real? At first glance, I thought "This guy is perfect caricature of a Kyle come to life". Then I realized his last name is Bull.
i'm honestly surprised by this did not expect this wow
Not a lot of people know these can rip the high gain tones!
I love the sound of it and the D.I out is really good so good in fact I never bothered buying a cab for it. Great for late night recordings. Only problem is the v.1 overheats after about an hour of playing, I've heard you can lower the bias but haven't done it yet. Anybody with a v1 who has tried it and had a similar problem? V.1 has a smaller oval logo.
Never had that issue with mine. Of course it will get a bit toasty because the nature of tubes but nothing that struck me as odd.
Owned my Classic 100 for nearly 20 years! Have been waiting for you to do a classic review. Most under rated Peavey! You should do more sleeper amp reviews.
One of my favorite is the Peavey Classic 100 head.. Monster for hard rock..
One of my favorite rigs back in 1990 was a peavey triump 120 with an Ada mp1 and a 1960a Marshall cab. It sounded massive with my rg570
Triumph is the tits.
A couple years ago they had one of those classic 20 mini heads on sale in a local shop I go to every once in a while. I think around 200 it was the last one they had it was 199 or something. I should’ve got it. It was the oval logo but for cleans and Skynyrd like southern rock it can’t be beat for the money . I imagine an excellent pedal platform also . Yeah I should’ve picked that sucker up . It would’ve done the fender thing for mono price money at 200 bucks . It still had the plastic over the chrome. Excuse me I’ll be kicking myself now .
Wait...Is this Peavey's best mini head even for metal? I am really considering getting one of these over a 6505mh and that is a crazy idea. Is the updated 'fix' to get power amp distortion worth buying the newer one or can you get great results with the old oval logo? It's not really documented anywhere that I can find how these amps have changed over the years. Seems to me this is better than the DSL20HR, or am I crazy? I have a red stripe bandit, but I find myself lusting for more Peavey. haha.
Great channel btw. I wonder what effect you alone has on the used Peavey prices!
@#%& you Kyle now I'm looking for one
OOPS
NIce. Kind of reminds me of the Crunch channel on the JSX
$599.99 is a little steep especially since you can get a Peavey Classic series Combo used for less money. I bought my Peavey 6505+ head for $499 99. I like this amplifier but you can get way more for less money.
The heads are a grand now
Not anymore. People have caught on to how great old Peavey heads are. Very rare to find one for sale for under 1k now unfortunately!
$499.99 for a 6505+? Used perhaps.
Are Peavey planning to update other of their mini heads? I'm planning to buy a 6505 MH, but maybe it's not the right time to do it.
Get the II
This is probably the craziest amp demo I’ve seen/heard. Mind blowing the those tones were capable on that little tweed all along lol
The early 90s U.S.A. Peavey amps are incredible bang for buck.
The Classic 50 head....an amp I will never give up. This was an entry/test amp for me to delve into amp modifications, repair; it has stood the test of time and tinkering over the years.
Nice!
Thays the 20 head
@@southpawlibranine3511I'm aware of that numbnuts.
Ya I won’t ever give up the 50 as well … magic and been that way since 91
Subscribed. Thanks for what you do bro. Excellent/ awesome videos. Always surprised that channels that should have more recognition don't, but the shitty b.s channels that like to talk shit always have way more subscribers. Weird, but anyhow bro. Good stuff and once again, thank you. Good informative stuff 😊
Thanks for posting! Great tutorial! I have now expanded my use of this amp into a new territory of heavier music!
I don’t use pedals as a rule. Sometimes I’ll use a tremolo for a certain song. I play in an original rock band. I like this amp as it suits my style. Clean for rhythm and distorted for leads. I utilize the channel/boost pedal for this. The overdrive pedals give amps a more muddy sound. I use this in combination with the Peavey C212 cabinet. It gives me that “Mississippi Marshall” sound. Very versatile amp.
Hey Kyle as much as I love the 5150/6505 I think I even love the Peavey Classic a bit more, just wondering how you feel the Classic compares to the Classic boosted
Damn dude this is one of the better-sounding amps you've had on your channel to my ears. It seems like the clean and gain channels are balanced enough that you can get a usable sweet spot on the EQ that works for both. Question - did Peavey fix the footswitch delay when changing channels? That always killed me live with these amps.
Honestly, didn't use the foot switch, sorry!
@@belligerentamateur all good, I'm just happy to see Peavey on the move again!
I... honestly can't believe how good that amp sounds, especially for what it is and its price point.
Had a Classic 50 4x10 combo and regret selling. Had incredible sonic quality. This and the 5150 are their hallmark amps. No one can talk shit on these two models.
….you like…Taking Back Sunday??!
I had to listen 3 times like…what is that? I know that…not what I expected from Mr Belligerent :)
I've gotta suggestion. . . put an Empress Heavy in front of it !!
A gear-trading buddy of mine has the Peavey Classic combo into an Orange 2x12 with an Empress Heavy in front , man it sounded awesome 👍
I'll try one eventually!
Here I've been at amp deciding time and just settled on going tomorrow for a Jet City 50 Combo and then here this thing....Makes me wonder now which one ..this wrench is seemingly more tricky all of a sudden. Sounds excellent Kyle Dang.
Do you suggest to get one for home studio for old school metal tone? I can get one pretty cheap right know . Your video is the only where it sounds like a metal beast, on other is pretty less gainy amp.
Would you suggest this Classic 20 MH over the Peavey Bravo for mostly home use? I'm assuming the Classic 20 power attenuator would give it an edge for bedroom use over the Bravo for lower volumes, but that Bravo sounds great.
I used a Peavey Classic 4x10 w/ a 4x10 extension cab under it. I was in a thrash band and it always shocked the hell out of people how great it sounded for metal. I think I might have to check this out.
I’m about to pickup a Classic 30 head and I’m gonna run it trough a Marshall 1960 cab with celestions. I’m curious about what speakers are in that mesa cab ?
Would a 2x12” Alnico blue cab work with this head. For Blues type 57 tweed deluxe sounds
I've always loved all the old Peavey stuff. I feel kind of bad that I'm replacing my old TransTube with a Laney GH30R.
I run mine into a 2x12 with greenbacks . Bandit has balls for days ; )
I had one of these for a few years. Didn't love or hate the lead channel, but I really only used it as a pedal platform. Other than the overheating, it served me well. Sometimes wish I still had it.
I grab every Peavey I find for a good price.... It's turning into a real problem.
I learned it al on the 30 and 50 combos and the koch multitone 50 stereo.
Maybe the Koch Supernova is a try
I had a Classic 30 112 combo in the early 2000’s. I 100% regret getting rid of it.
I have had the setup in early 70s like CCR with solid state Custom Amps but not great like tube amps .
This amp was already on my shopping list. I didn't know it was getting an update, thanks Kyle great demo.
MY pleasure!
I used a PV classic 50 for years in a heavy band, more groove metal stuff than thrash. It killed. It was the first tube amp i ever owned. I ran a Furman PQ4 in the loop to fine tune the preamp.
From classic cleans to classic death metal tones. Why tf do people buy Marshalls again?
My favorite amp is Marshall but many others great. You one cool guitarist man.
There is a 50 at my local Music go Round for 449.99
clean channel sounds good but is like kryptonite to Kyle's playing 😂
OK cool I subscribed. I see what you been a doin' with the lower end/ lower priced amps. I got an ENGL and a JOYO, I like all amps. Peavy Classic series kicks ass, very versatile. You could always run a different pre-amp into the effects return and or a different speaker cab.
Thanks for the sub!
That's definitely true about Peavey and low mids. As a Peavey fanatic I've owned everything from an early '80s Century to a 6505 and I've had to dial WAY back on the low mids with every one of them regardless of whether it was a solid-state or tube amp. I'm guessing it has to do partly with components used and they've had the same guys designing them for eons.
Loved my Classic 50 2x12. Had WGS Veteran 30's loaded into it. Sold it to purchase a Vox AC30. It might be blasphemous to say... but, in some ways the Classic 50 was the better sounding and performing amp (IMO). I like what the Vox does enough to not undo that past decision. But, there are days that I get a Peavey Classic craving.
I agree with this. It's a well known workhorse, but also a criminally underrated amp.
My first amp in the early 80s was an old Peavy Backstage and it was a blast back then because in Amarillo Texas there was no other amps available but all of their gear was road tough and impossible to destroy.
Woah! The intro clip gives me a Ride the Lightning vibe. Didn’t expect that
This is my pedal platform amp while I use the on board gain from my valveking mh. I love these amps and this one is so underrated.
Thanks for the best video I've seen on the MH20. Like you, I started with a Classic 30 combo years ago. Been through a lot of amps. I keep 5 in my studio that rotate from time to time: Victory V30, Fender 65 PRRI, Boogie MKV 25, Egnl Fireball 25, and the Peavey MH 20. The Peavey has stayed where I have moved on from PRS, Vox and Marshall. For reference, I'm a blues/rocker. Don't have the chops for metal. So consider that.
How would you describe the lead channel ? Is it fizzy ?
to Hkm Z: I would say it depends on the guitar/pickups. I think it sounds best with humbuckers regarding the lead channel. I don't find the amp to be nearly as fizzy or even as finicky about pickups as a Marshall DSL at lower volumes. I don't find the amp's lead channel to be fizzy at all. I found I can get a great Marshall tone using the clean channel with an Xotic SL Drive in front of the amp.
Wish I could play like you. This takes a lot of playing .
I like how in spite of u using a different cab and mic setup than I, I still hear the tone of the amp itself. Granted mine is 5x the size but godfuckingdammit the tone is rad as hell
Highly recommend using a klon centaur clone, I use the MXR Sugar Drive. Super sweet gain boost, shit gets harmonic as fuck
I didnt hear you mention the built in boost. You cant adjust it but its really good.
Can you not get Laney's over there?
Always loved these amps when they came out. They were one of the most suggested amps for anything other than metal, but they sound cool boosted. Was curious about these mini heads. Love the Peavey mini stuff!
I had two Peavey Classic 50s. A head and a 410 combo. The head sounded awesome through a 412 cab, sweet and brutal at the same time. The 410 was SRV in a box.
I’m not surprised that you loved your Classic 30… I’d actually say that the Classic series is a great amp as a tone reference for tuning the ears of new players. I found the gain sweet spot was 5-7 with a boost on the head and the combo.
I like my Classic 30a, but the noise from the tubes rattling almost makes me want to sell it
My story with the classic series is similar, just without the pop-punk part...... I got a 1x12 combo with a blown stock speaker, and I'd have never kept that speaker in it anyway. What I ended up doing was ripping the chassis out completely and building it a two-tone checkered head cab and a matching speaker cab using this 12" pine that I already had and a piece of ply from an amped cabinet that got destroyed in a car accident for the baffle. I swap the speakers around a lot, sometimes it's a V30 and a T75, sometimes it's a K100 and an Eminence Swamp Thang. Mine's an older version, the EQ sucked on those, so I just dime all 3 eq knobs (pots are variable resistors, dimed, the impedance is zero, so it's as close to having it out of the circuit as you can get) and set the gain around halfway then smash it up front with a truly clean clean boost. It gets a hell of a snarly voice at high gain settings, sounding a lot like a preamp section from a hot-rodded Superlead into an AC30 output section. It's incredibly easy to mix with drums and bass as it is, using just one E609 in front of one of the speakers, just off the edge of the dustcap, on-axis, 4 fingers back. I keep the master volume at like a hair past half, just to really move the speakers, but the output section is still mostly clean. It's way tighter than one would expect from this type of old-school style amp. It's my number one for recording.
7:19 was that New American Classic? 👀
Hey man it would be so cool if you had a decibel meter in particular for these smaller amps, would be great to know what loudness you got before it started to distort... dB meter or not still a fine review as always 🤘
Wouldn't a large portion of that volume be down to the cabinet/speaker?
It is better than PRS MT15?
You also very funny and not serious.
It wont take fuzz pedals, fuzz pedals sound extremely mushy
I have multiple videos using fuzz pedals with this amp and it sounds totally fine to me
Honestly, Peavey was made for Metal. Especially the late 80’s and early 90’s models like the Ultra 60 and any of the black and green/turquoise lined heads
This sounds great too though! I have a Peavey classic tweed 412ES, so maybe it’s time to grab a classic head!
Played metal through a 50 for over a decade. Can't really dime the pre without noise but you can get close.
That rasp is severe but sounds great in a mix and it makes solos on the neck sound SICK. Only amp that made my 85 neck pup sound that good for solos
Brother your hands might be ice cold due to Raynaud’s. I have the same problem here and same condition. Playing shows back in the day with no heat was BRUTAL.
This amp sounds like Ride The Lightning era Metallica when a overdrive is put in front of it and a eq in the effects loop.
Super late to the party, but wow ! 🤘
I’m convinced this is just the 6505 MH with out the third channel prove me wrong.
Nope.
I've been gigging the Classic 50 head for 10 years , its milky with a dash of delay in the loop. It also has a very reactive feedback for rock stuff.
Your “Hell’s Bells” tone sounded exactly like the album.
the amp has a very british voicing, for sure!
I use my Peavey Classic 30 with a Marshal 1960a 4x12, plus attenuator and it gives a great Marshal heavy Rock sound, regardless of whichever pedals that you use, the attenuator is the most important as it allows you to fully exploit the head without blown your ears off the side of your head.
You sold me this amp :-)
I just bought the valve king 20mh and pairing it with the peavey 112-6 Cab.. I can’t wait till it arrives I am stoked!!!
Duuuude I dig that amp!
One of the amps I regret selling was an original USA made Tweed Classic 30. Man I miss that amp!!!
