In this video I change the PCV valve on my 2015 Camry 2.5 I4 with the 2ARFE engine. This car was burning about 1.5 qts of oil over 5k miles. I'm not sure if it solved the problem at the time of this video, but I thought I'd give it a try, since it's reap and it's a regular maintenance item

The Toyota engine that was burning oil due to defective piston rings was the 2.4L 4cyl 2AZ-FE .
I had a 2007 Scion tC that had that engine.
The car was great, but burned too much oil , almost 1qt per 1,000 miles.
The Toyota dealer in Roseville, California said it was normal and didn't want to repair the engine.
I NEVER returned to that dealer.
Thanks for the information! I’ve heard about the ordeal people went through. Did you take it to another dealership and did they replaced the pistons and pistons rings?
They repaired my 2008 tc in 2016 under the warranty program.
I was in dealership today, they told me the same story- just add oil…
I have a 2016 Scion tC (The second gen tC has the same engine and transmission as the Camry and Rav4) and the process is the same. On a normal car where the pcv valve is on top of the engine, I would recommend removing the PCV valve every 30K miles of so, check it, clean it if needed and put it back in, or replace it if it is gummed up. But with the horrible placement on this engine, checking/cleaning it is not an easy option. So rather, I'm just going to replace it every 60-70K miles. I just replaced the PCV for the first time at 69K, it took about 2hrs from wheel off to wheel on, and here's what I learned.
- On the tC, after removing the plastic panel, the opening in the fender well is a bit tighter. The body style is a bit smaller and lower, so I guess that's expected.
- Even with the smaller opening in the wheel well, there is still plenty of room to work to remove the crank position sensor wire and bracket. I went a bit further and from the top, I unclipped the next wire support up the line, and was able to really get the wiring and bracket pushed out of the way, giving me a bit more space to work.
- Getting the hose on and off is the hardest part. I was able to see it and reach it by hand, by lying on the floor under the brake rotor. Took a bit to find a position that would allow me to get my hand up in there such that I could pinch and slide the hose clamp back. I was able to do this with my left hand - no plyers needed! Then the hose pulls off easilly.
- The valve itself was not too hard. A long socket with a short extension and flex head wrench worked perfectly. The flex head wrench is helpful, but you might be able to get by with a non-flex wrench.
- From the bottom of the engine, the new valve screws in easilly by hand as long as you put it in the socket with an extension first. Once it is in by hand, I found it was easier to use a wrench to tighten it from above. I even was able to get a torque wrench on it and tighten it to spec (18 FtLb)
- Getting the hose and clamp back on is the hard part. I was able to do this by feel from under the car using my left hand.
- I should be able to do this a lot quicker next time. I spent so much time just trying to figure out the best way to position myself to see the thing and reach up in there.
Hope these tips help others!
I appreciate this so much, I'm about to do the PCV Valve on my '14 TC. Didn't realize the Interval was only for 60-70k. Probably why my car idles kinda weird, definitely doing it now
Very detailed, you should do your own video!
Any other suggestions in replacing the pcv valve ..? I own a 2012 scion tc and it looks very tight in there to work ???
You're the man. I was able to change this valve in about 1/2 hour. I would suggest long needle nose 45 degree pliers to pull/reinstall the hose.
Thanks for the tip
Thank you for posting this informative video. I just purchased the replacement from the Toyota dealer and the parts personnel did not have a clue where it was located. He showed me the diagram and said " oh, it's right here"-pointing towards the oil cap. 🙄
Lol! Glad it helped
Thank you. Because of this video i was able to buy the exact tools and fixed it myself. You made it very easy for all of us .
Thanks!!
Yes The video was nicely done!😅
This was very very helpful I almost pulled a view things out of the top valve cover😊
12/10 rating on video quality description brother. Thanks for showing it 👍🏼👌🏼

Hi thanks for the video.. im an uber driver and i like to do my parts replacement my self.. I have a 2016 toyota camry. And I was looking for this info since my car hit the 100k miles. Finally i found your video. Thanks again!!!
emicqui55 you should do it at 100k. It’s a 25 dollar part and it’s regular maintenance. Don’t forget to subscribe and share help me grow ;-)
This was a very thorough and clear video for the PCV valve in particular. Thanks a bunch, have a sub!
Thanks!!! I really appreciate
Thanks for the video instructions. I disconnected the hose from top, remove the tire, side cover , crank position sensor and the bracket then pull the hose out of the PCV valve, it's not too bad and it took me almost an hour to get the job done. Note: don't forget to plug in the crank position sensor to the sensor or you car won't start.
At 97K miles the PCV valve still looking pretty good.
Nice work!
Thanks for camry 2.5 pcv valve change tip!! It is most suitable tip out of you tube footage !! I will try my 2010 camry 2.5l engine today !!!!
My car mileage 193k km. It is time to change pcv valve. Oil consumption little bit
You're welcome!
Thanks... I was hoping it will be easier, I remember doing this YEARS AGO, but now that make things COMPLICATED for the DIY crowd...
My daughter's RAV4 has the same mileage on it. No oil burning issues yet. I change the oil every 3k miles.
Excellent documentation sir!
Very good information. Thank you for the tip on which socket to use.
Thanks!
Last oil change had about 3qts left. Where's the rest of it? Is it burning it or leaking somewhere. My air filter was a little dirty but no trace of oil. I'll try changing out the PCV next. Thanks for showing the way.
Good job my friend I have camry 2012 I I will change my PCV soon 👍🏻thanks for the video god bless you 🙏
Thank you!
You always welcome
Hello sir,
I have a 2016 Rav 4 recently I found my oil was so low below the last dot on the scale hope I didn’t damage anything. Changing PCV value help not burning oil. Also does the car show warning sign when the oil is low. When u add oil u can use any brand oil with same number?
Please advise. Thank you so much.
Excellent video. I have an oil consumption issue with2012 rav4 2arfe engine. I do not see oil any where on driveway/ under car. Do you think it is a pcv valve issue? That valve is in a meesed up place!
A deepwell regular socket (not impact) + swivel and 4" or 6" extension makes it easier to access
I tried a deep socket and it was too big to fit the wrench
Just did this myself. The hardest part for me was getting the hose off. After that everything went smooth.
how did U finaly get hose off
@@2000CORVETTEpinch the clamp move it back towards your hand and tug and twist gently until it finally lets go then just remove the valve
Very good video. Thanks, very helpful.
Thanks John
Excellent video and i will also change pcv valve for 2014 Rav4 with 165,000 km
Did the PCV replacement remedy the oil consumption issue? My friend just acquired a 2012 Camry with 250,000 miles. Runs great but oil was quite low on dipstick.
Excellent video thank you a new subscriber
Thank you! I really appreciate. Make sure you watch the follow up video.
Does the PCV valve shouldnbe change every certain amount of years?
Is it necessary to use hose clamps? Or its tight enough without it. I had a shop replace the pcv valve and a new pcv hose and they said that clamps or not needed and just plugged it on the valve. Now worried about a possible leak.
There is no clamp from factory. You just connect the hose
Nice video!
I need to get that medium length 19mm socket.
Thanks
How long was your socket? Also, what size socket for Sienna 2015? Good video, brother.
Donnay W. Not sure exactly how long. I think they only come in short, midsize and long. I had to use the midsize. I believe the Siennas never used this engine, so the pcv valve would probably be in a different position.
Did you have any idle/performance issues with the old valve or just oil consumption?
Pcv valves shouldn’t have any significant effect on idle or performance. Those are more likely caused by a vacuum leak or a bad maf sensor (or idle control valves for older car)
I have a question. Is this also located at the bottom on a 2013 Scion tC? I’m looking for that valve but I can’t find it under the hood.
Don't know. Sorry.
This was great I saw a guy took the manifold out to get there.
T thanks. Don’t forget to subscribe
Removing manifold is the correct procedure to replace the valve not this improvised shortcut methods
Do You have a link for the wrench 🔧 you used in the video?
Very helpful Sir! Loving it! But would you please make a video of the process of taking out the plastic cover and cable sensor which is out of the way in order to reach into the pcv valve.
Thanks. I’ll do that when I do the follow up video. But it’s very easy
I missed a lot in this video. Much talking done about the top of the engine and the actual removal of the valve was not there. And when he moved the wrench and said that was a removal it was actually tightening. I jacked up the car, remove the wheel and cover and the wiring and still my hand was at least 3 inches away from the PCV hose. So I suspect that the video of the turning wrench and the PCV valve was made when a Camry with same engine(not the youtuber’s car) was on a car lift
👍🏼 like everyone else thanks for this video upload this confirms the location which toyota of made a pain in the arse to r/r. I gave a thumbs-up to everyone's coment. 😁👍🏼
I have a 2017 Highlander with the I4 and it's located under the engine valve cover too. Ouch. 850 from the dealer. I wonder if I can take off the right front tire too and go that way. it's not bad but 85k so I want to replace it after my 2017 Honda CRV started to burn oil, 40k, and replaced the pcv valve...5 minute job..wham...no more burning oil...good video!
It's probably the same location, since it's the same engine... worth trying.
Hoping its the same procedure on my 2010 2.5 camry, this looked tricky but a lot easier then pulling the intake and all the other crap off.
It should be the same for all 2ARFE engines
@@dcfgarage everything's the same except mine has a power steering pump in the way which makes this route impossible, the newer cars like yours must have electric power steering.
Very helpful thank you, my 2012 Camry is burning oil, my car is at 200,000 miles was wondering 💭 if it’s worth doing any work on it. My Camry doesn’t have any other issues
If you never replaced the pcv valve, it's worth a try. If it doesn't improve, then it's likely piston rings or valve seals, and not worth messing at 200k
Thank you sir.
Yw!
Awesome video!
Just wondering if there is a video on how to replace the hose itself?
Thanks. Unfortunately I don't have a video for the hose
My pcv valve broke off with a peace it screws on into. What do I need to replace. The intake manifold? The block? Or the valve cover? Please help
It's either attached to the valve cover or the intake manifold
Hello sir, thank you for the information.
I have a question.
When you replace the valve. Did the check engine light turn on?
It didn't. Shouldn't
@dcfgarage ok, thank you.
These engines have been in use on Toyota Camry since 2010. I have a 2011 Camry with the same engine. It was burning oil. I changed the PCV and I didn't notice any change. I was changing the oil at an interval of 6k. I switched between 3500 and 4000 miles, then I noticed a difference. I believe that the whole thing happened because the dealership in the past was changing the oil every 8 to 10k. For NYC that is too long.
older 2ARFE had piston rings issues and they would burn a lot of oil. This was a big issue back then and Toyota used to consider "normal" if it burned 1qt every 1,000 miles and would not replace the engine.
@@dcfgarage I have 2011 burning oil to fast. Did this fix problem R Rings the problem???
Did your Camry burn oil? My nephews Camry 2004 was burning oil and after replacing PCV it stopped burning oil.
It did. Also stopped after replacing the pcv
Very helpful video, thank you for taking the time and effort in putting it together.
I’ll probably tackle this in my next brake job.
Is the disconnected hose that’s shown at the 4:00 mark for the PCV valve?
I can’t believe Toyota put this valve in the engine’s ass when it should be on the head.
That is the pcv tube indeed
So did this fix your oil consumption issue? My 2013 has 190k mi on it and based on where the PCV valve is located, its probably never been done by previous owners. My idle is a little rough, hoping this helps smooth it out.
Yes, the OP said in another reply
My 2013 RAV4 has 178K miles. Original PCV valve. I don’t think I can DIY it. I even wonder if some local mechanics know the location?
Very helpful
Thanks!
Did oil consumption made you change pcv? I got a 2012 venza 4cyl. And oil goes down about 1qt or 2quite quick.
Hi Josue. It was the consumption that made me change the PCV, because this engine is quite new and I thought bad valve seals or blown head gasket would be unlikely. If your car goes through 1-2 qts in 3k miles or less, I doubt it's the PCV. It's either the two situations I mentioned or worn out piston rings.
How many miles does your car have? Does it smoke?
@@dcfgarage thanks for the reply. Vehicle has 130k km about 80,000 miles. But ir isnt burning oil , it does have a minor leak but it doesnt even get to ground, the garage is clean on the floor. Also, i felt a little pressure when opening the oil cap to fill with oil. I can compare the sound as to when you open the fuel cap. Thanks again for your experience.
@@josuedonan5666 If the car isn't smoking and you don't have signs of blown head gasket like milky sludge in the radiator cap. You can try replacing the PCV. If that doesn't work, they you might have some premature piston ring wear. I think the vacuum after you turn off the engine is a different problem. That could be a bad intake manifold seal. light vacuum when the engine is running is normal.
Toyota, why? Why you got to make a simple thing harder? On second note, thank you for the detail explanation and instruction.
Did you shake the old PCV Valve to see if it was still good or not? You are right, it is important to replace these and most vehicles are easy to replace. What was Toyota thinking on this one?
Steve Glenn I did and it was moving, but it felt different than the new one. Maybe it had some oil that was preventing the blocking piece to sit perfectly
@@dcfgarage easy to clean them
Wouldn't installing an oil catch can save your catalytic ? If you find a good quality one let us know.
a catch can is a lot more expensive than a PCV valve. Besides it doesn't affect the cat converter
Great job. I have a 2010 Camry that I'm going to try this on.
FYI, on the 2.4 Toyota wouldn't commit to a Recall. They issued a service bulletin that involved them changing your oil, sealing your dipstick, then checking the level after 1000 miles. They had a chart that would determine if they would replace the rings or not. I think Toyotas are great, but the ring issue is disappointing.
Thanks for the info!
I have a 2014 160k miles should I replace just the pcv valve or the pcv valve hose also?
I would replace the PCV that's overdue and inspect the hose and only replace if it has any sign it's brittle. Your car is new, so the hose should be fine.
@@dcfgarage I wanted to replace mine on my 2013 RAV4 with 178K miles but dealer said that since there is no drivability issues, no need to replace it.
Did replacing the pcv valve fix the oil consumption issue?
It did. My valve was probably not sealing correctly and was allowing oil to go through.
Use a longer extension and you can turn the ratchet outside of the wheel well if you wanted. 😉
Thanks for the tip
They fixed the piston rings in the 2.4L that’s why they introduced the 2.5L
Thanks for sharing
Do you use thread sealant for the PCV valve? If do what type of sealant?
David Carz I didn’t. The oem came out without thread locker
@@dcfgarage Thread lock and thread sealant are two different things
@@joeschulte979 why needs sealant?
Great location for pcv valve! 😠 More $$$ for Toyota. Good video. 👍

Did it work? How is oil consumption after it's done?
It did. I did a follow up video on the channel. I believe my old valve had some carbon deposits that were preventing it from sealing properly.
Thank you for showing us how to replace the pcv valve on this 2ar-fe engine, what was Toyota thinking on this one? And, did that fixed the oil consumption issue?
It did... I did a follow up video on my channel.

You're a pro mechanic or DIY ? I want to ask what could happen when oil gets into intake manifold ? I've found some oil on intake manifold . Mechanic friend said that I should check to see if any oil is getting in . I don't know how can I check that all I know is some oil gets on the outside of manifold . Still car is running great
I'm a DIYer. For what I know it's normal for oil to accumulate inside intake manifold in modern cars because of exhaust gas recirculation (AKA PCV) systems, specially if you have a turbo or compressor because you'll have more blow-by. You can add an oil catch can and that should resolve 90% of it.
@@dcfgarage I'm trying to remove it now . Can't see it because of body panel have to go by feel . Find it by the hose connected to it ? This other guy on different video doesnt seem to take hose clamp just too difficult to remove and put back on . Seems he just pulls it off and shoves it back on ? Video by car care nut
What is the brand of that medium depth 19mm socket?
I think it's kobalt

I ordered a socket off Amazon and it is a good depth but the head of the valve doesn’t fit in the head of socket. 👎🏻
Did the PCV ever solve oil consumption on it?
It did. There’s a follow up video on the channel
Is this the same for a 2011 Toyota Camry?
It should be the same if yours has the 2ARFE engine.

I will post the update soon. So far, I drove. 500 miles and the oil level is the same. I’ll do an update at 2,000 miles
So did it work?
So far, 1000 miles and the oil level hs not gone down
@@dcfgarage is it still working? I tried changing the pcv valve on mine but did nothing. still burning oil
@@kjemad Then you have a bigger problem. How many miles how your engine?
Excellent workup. I had the chance to do this on a 2014 RAV ARFE. Your video was excellent in identifying location, problems and hardware required. Let me add this.
It took me 4 hours because I could not get the valve back in the engine thread. You can see the hole(?) in the engine where the PCV goes if you shine a light just right.
I finally discovered this technique: lie down with back on ground and feet pointing forwards. snake your left hand carrying pcv into area of "hole and get a feel for it with your pinky.
Once you are sure you know where the thread is use your other fingers to put pcv into slot and try to get some turns into thread. I was able to get quite a few turns into albeit a few degrees at a time. Once it is secure, you can use the socket and ratchet
Will need same socket and ratchet as shown by poster. Got my socket at home depot
Very accurate description of how to put it back. I ended up doing the same things as far as the position goes. I did manage to thread it by hand fairly easily though.
Did this solve the oil usage issue?
Garys Spence It did. So far, 2k miles and it held the level
👍👍
That’s why they sale extentions for sockets
How much did u burn after the next oil change
After I replaced the valve I did not notice any significant oil drop anymore. There’s a follow up video on the channel
Haynes Illustration for you guys! *PCV vavle: **ibb.co/xXZBB64** Intake Removal and install: **ibb.co/2ycHTQ8*
Note: This method is more time consuming and you have to Release to Fuel Pressure:
1 Remove the fuel filler cap - this will relieve any pressure built up in the tank.
2 Remove the center console box (see Chapter 11, Section 22 ).
3 Locate the fuel pump/sending unit electrical connector and unplug it (the harness will exit through a grommet in the vehicle's floor).
4 Start the engine and allow it to run until it stops (it should only run for a few seconds, or it might not even start). Turn the ignition switch Off and disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery before working on the fuel system (see Chapter 5 ).
5 The fuel system pressure is now relieved. Place a shop rag around any fitting to be disconnected to catch the residual fuel as it bleeds off. Dispose of the fuel soaked rag in an approved safety container.
6 When you’re finished working on the fuel system, reconnect the fuel pump/sending unit harness connector and connect the negative cable to the battery.
7 Performing this procedure may cause a Diagnostic Trouble Code to set (fuel system too lean). If this happens, refer to Chapter 6 and erase the trouble code.
Thanks!!!!
@@mammithian I just got my PVC off Rock Auto today. $4.17 But is now 102 outside lmao.
@mammithian I deleted your post by accident, when I was trying to reply... sorry. But I agree with you. Even though the Haynes manual is the official way, you can do this how I did. Just two important tips... make sure you put two jack stands, a tire and the jack when you lay down under the car. Specially with jack stands failing these days... and the second tip is that it's easier if you lay on your back under the rotor with your feet facing the front of the car. That should allow you to reach the PCV valve... but please be safe!

Thank you Sir. That makes you wonder WHY toyota put the pcv valve in such difficult place for us. Shame shame shame.
Has oil flow changed after valve replacement?
Vyacheslav Koppel I don’t think it did. What I’m hoping is that it stops burning oil
@@dcfgarage , what solved it for our 2010 Camry with 120,000 miles was replacing the valve cover gasket. Toyota has released a new valve gasket design that prevents the leakage of oil. It is a pretty sweet design. Before the replacement, I was losing a quart every 5,000 miles.
Owen Funkhouser thanks for the valuable information!!!
Oh wow! No wonder the dealership is asking me $400 plus to get it replaced for a $15-$20 part. Thank you for sharing. Can you tell me if you had to torque it or just hand tight??
I just hand tightened it. I would say the torque wouldn’t be more than 15 ft-lbs . Keep in mind that it’s an aluminum block.
F the dealership. Told me they had to remove fuel rail and manifold to do the job. The mechanic will do it the same way and charge you book time. 🤨
My mechanic charged me $350.

Finally, I found the time to replace the PCV on 2013 Camry SE 2.5L.
I got the PCV out, but the new (or old) doesn't want to screw back in.
How did you get the new PCV initially threaded?
Did you just use hand to tighten few turns?
I've tried couple dozen time using hands, and in socket with extension,
but the new PCV doesn't want to start threading in.
It takes patience. Maybe if you clean the threads it might help. But I threaded in by hand. I laid my back on the ground under the brake rotor. But make sure you have good jack stand and the Jack holding the car. Don’t do that just with the jack stand.
Another tip is using the socket and your hand, gently and slowly screw it counter clockwise until you feel a click. Then you screw it clockwise.
@@dcfgarage Thanks for the quick reply. I try the old one and that screws in just fine. I dropped the new PCV few times and I may have slightly damaged the threads, though it looks fine visually. I’m gonna go back to the dealer and swap (if they allow) or get a new one. Thanks again.
Are you a mechanic or DIY ? A mechanic told me there are signs that your pcv valve is bad like high idling , oil leaks and air leaks . Are these signs a fool proof sure way to tell if pcv valve is bad ? I've got oil leaks btt not the other signs . Major pain to replace mine . I've got to take off imtake manifol and a few other things or pay a shop . 11 Camry 2ARFE 2.5 L It's right by the intake manifold and HYDRAULIC POWER STEERING PUMP . DO I NEED TO REPL:ACE IT ?
Not a mechanic. But the only way yo know 100% if it's bad is to remove it and inspect
it took 3 hours. the pain also putting it in the same thread which I couldn't see. Difficulty 10/10 How did you manage to screw it in. I had to use a snake scope to see the gold thread.
I put two jack stands plus the tire for safety so I could lay under the brake rotor and be able to extend my arms into the engine for I could have a good position to screw it it. I could not see the hole, so I just used the extension and the socket to patiently screw it in by hand.

what was the issue with the car?
Burning oil
So what year is this car?
2015
I think you’re confusing the 2ar with the 2az
Oh true
Did it help?
In my case, yes
I know this video is 2 years old but there is another reason Toyota engines are consuming oil. The 10K mile interval for oil changes are damaging the piston oil rings. Sludge builds up and clogs the rings and lets oil pass by (for a simple explanation). Do not go by the 10k oil changes, do 5k like most other engines. Damage on used vehicles that used the 10k recommendation for years may be irrreversible and require new engine or expensive repairs.
Great point! There are many reasons why the 2ARFE engines might consume oil. Previous generation had bad piston rings.
I highly doubt it that the PC valve is a culprit. The problem is related to rings - I have a same engine and the issue started around 60,000 miles. Toyota should recall this engine too, but allowed the owners to suffer the expense of fixing the engine. (I think they only went to 2009 with the recall).
Most likely it's burning oil because of the 10,000 miles oil change intervals. Safe bet is to do the 5,000 miles or 6 months oil changebtime intervals
Geez mine is 11 LE 2.5 L 2ARFE engine but somehow it's verrry different in that has power steering pump in the way right where your hand is at 3:43 . It is just on the side . See this other video where he has to take off much more parts and much more work . Either need to take the pump off or intake manifold ..
They use different intakes on different models
@@dcfgarageyeah normally a very easy simple job to replace pcv valve but not mine
Yes my Rav4 2013 is losing oil as well @100k. Guessing this it, as no smoke nor leaks never....
Mii Entertainment very likely
@@dcfgarage Have you noticed anything new with the Oil level?? thank you.
Mii Entertainment I just measures it after 1,000 miles and the level is the same. The pcv valve seems to have worked for me
why you didn't show how the hose was removed ( good job ).
Impossible to film. I should have added a picture. Buy you just pull the hose
Can not be done on a 2010 Camry (Canadian) there a pump right in front of it.
Are you sure yours has the 2AR engine and not the 2AZ?
I have a 2010 also, power steering pump in the way 2AR-FE
Same here, I watched this video and then got excited and bought the part, I should have read deeper into the comments, I'm wondering if pulling the pump is easier then pulling the intake.
Unfortunately the 2010 has that steering pump right in the way! Yes it’s a 2AR-FE
