@figard9855 There are a lot of sick skins. League's balancing team ans champion release team is F tier, their writers have fallen off, and their higher ups arw terrible, but the music and the art team is always top tier.
The silhouette is probably one of the most important things in character designs. Most studios won’t go forward with a design that breaks the character silhouette, specially in fast moving games where visual clarity is king. Overall, a great take and contributions!
⚠️WARNING IF THIS VIDEO MADE YOU THINK ABOUT INSTALLING LOL, JUST DON'T. NEVER PLAY LEAGUE OF LEGENDS. THINK ABOUT YOUR LIFE, THINK ABOUT PEOPLE AROUND YOU, THINK ABOUT GRASS. LEAGUE IS NOT THE SOLUTION
Guts from Berserk is peak character design I love that his design changes throughout the the story, and that his character design tells the reader about him just by the way he looks. (One eye, arm cannon, etc) and I also think that it illustrates the different points in his life too It's genius
Bancho Sett: Looks like Jotaro Also Bancho Sett: Sounds like Dio *existential crisis* edit: The Japanese VA for Sett is Takehito Koyasu. He's famous for his role as Dio which is also Jotaro's arch-nemesis. So imagine looking like the protagonist but having the voice of the worst enemy lololol.
I always found lovely how The Legend of Zelda do this within the same characters when the years pass. They all appeal to fantasy stories and have inspiration of Studio Ghibly (without being completly anime), but each iteration appeals to a different idea. One Zelda it's more simplistic, the other it's more chibi, the other it's more royalty, the other have shapes more triangular, the other it's more "dark", etc.
Me eating good by this God/Goddess of art :sob: Something I think you nailed it is: In Star Guardian Universe is really common to see Artist add new things to a Character's Silhouette: Syndra's Floaty Hair, Eyepatch and Spikey Skirt Ezreal's Shoulder fabric. Ahri's neck piece Miss fortune without a Hat. Taliyah with two high buns Rell with a Saint Seiya armor crown Sona with Glasses Morgana's head pieces And in your case adding a Hat to Sett and a different iteration of the fluffy/spikey coat, and the longer hair. that's what (imo) makes SG designs so interesting, and they even becomes the new silhouette for next skins. Like happened with Ezreal's Shoulder Fabric o Ahri's Neckpiece.
Idk your situation to know for sure why that would be, but if it's not related to stress, being busy, or just needing more rest, then here is my advice for building it again: There's two major factors to building imagination in my opinion. The first is similar to a visual library but with ideas. Coming up with something from scratch based off of nothing is about impossible, so it helps a lot if you have a big mental library to draw from. So reading, analyzing movies you like, going to real life events, learning about places and peoples you were unfamiliar with: those are all good things to do to start building it back up. And note, over enough time of not putting anything in, it will begin to diminish! So going months without doing anything will have a negative impact. The second is giving yourself space. You know how everyone talks about shower thoughts? For the most part what causes them is having quiet time alone without any distractions. So finding place where you can just be alone without distractions in a non miserable way will help a lot. I think having a blank canvas can still make it tough, so starting with sort of fanfiction level ideas can help have an entry point or jumping off place. You can do little menial tasks at this time too. Everyone has a different level of what takes too much attention or too little for it to help with thinking. For me, data entry into excel with music is enough to get me thinking, but washing dishes I focus too hard on. So find what things work best for you leisure or productive, as long as you don't have distractions it's fine. Sometimes too the best thing to do is just start. Iterate. Ideas get a little stopped up, so just iterating instead of ruminating can help a lot. For some people too because drawing iterations are time consuming for them they get too intimidated, so don't be afraid to write lists of ideas instead so you can choose your favorites from there. These are all broad suggestions but I hope some might apply to you and be helpful! If not, well kt's okay to have a dry spell, especially if a lot is going on physically or in your life, so don't be discouraged, it can improve in time
Sett is known as the anime guy and is heavily inspired by stuff like dragonball and jojo to begin with, in the japanese version he even has the same VA as dio.
i wish i had some good artist friends to give me tips too like they give you... not meaning to diminish your progress, i rly love your videos and art im just envious
This is a genius design, very cohesive with the whole skinline, got interesting little details/references that match the character's very well. In SG universe, the colors correspond with personality traits, which is why blue (and maybe red) is a perfect choice.
Thank you for giving us more insight on how you and riot artists develop character/concept designs! While the steps seem familiar since your angel video went over some of these concepts like research, I didn’t really consider function or what the desired medium a design is intended to go in. As someone who has tried to make basic character sheets for animation, it is really hard to come up with a simple yet effective design that people like. A lot of people want to get into concept art and that innate competition should spark people into wanting to make more unique designs that are appealing, and at least from what I’ve seen on social media in the past, that very much is the case! Hopefully more people get motivated to push their design process after watching this video. I know i’ll try to!
great video. I'm not an illustrator but i can see how i can apply these steps to improve my own art style. in fact, these steps can be used as a problem solving method for many different kinds of things! thank you for the tips !
This is for sure a good practice to go all the way through all 4 phases until you get to a final initial concept. Though don’t be shameful of yourself if you’re having trouble as is. Just drawing a basic mannequin of a character can be difficult, let alone adding all these details with hair, facial details, clothing, shape language, it’s a lot to juggle at once. If anything, continue your fundamental studies, and get comfortable doing loose practice sketches of people and your favorite desired style : w/ reference w/o reference & w/ reference to critique your w/o reference. Just choose one of the section such as the research and ideation experimentation phases making multiple concepts. Then when you feel comfy, go to the next step. Take it slow but deliberately. And try your best not to beat yourself up. Every action towards practice is getting better, especially the failures. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I don't know if I've ever seen one do it before, but that drawing of a hand holding a pencil that acts as visualization of the hand drawing is so cute idk why
2:18 The whole thing with Lovcraftian monsters is that they are constantly changing and incomprehensible, which is the opposite of appealing design. They aren't supposed to be looked at.
But even in grotesquery there needs to be an “appeal”, even if in a perverse way. The greatest sin in character design is in making it forgettable after all.
I love this pixel 3d model you use as a representation of yourself. Would you ever consider making a tutorial on how to make something similar or how it works? Thanks!

Setting up “appeal” or “cool factor” as the main goal for a character design it’s actually a very unreliable approach and can very easily bring you nowhere. Or just redoing stuff that’s being done and labeled as such.
@@chotho4718 For sure, also It’s better to go in the direction of helping a specific narrative for the character, asking questions like: Why does he wear this? why does he stand a certain way? etc. All the elements should help the viewer understand the character’s personality, setting, profession, skills and what have you. You should never just chase “cool” cos it doesn’t mean anything and doesn’t help story.
thanks for the video. from you (or anyone in the comment's experience), is character design by committee still a thing in studios? it's been a while since my few art education courses but our teacher stressed that, in a team dynamic, you may need to incorporate other artists or the directors idea into a character design and have that tweaked/critiqued by the team. Is that still the case or is it expected for artist to fully develop characters from their own resources/references and then present them?
