    Just a thought as far as a topic for future videos, I was talking with some other artists on a forum, and we were discussing how you go through phases of thinking your art is pretty good, then you think it's garbage, then you think it's good, then it's garbage again, etc. Someone said that's because your artistic eye adjusts faster than your skills do. So your artistic eye starts to recognize where you need work, I guess? I'd love to hear a video on your perspective on this!

    Helpful video as always, teacher! Also, could you maybe do a video or just little mentioning about watermakrs?? As someone who just starts my journey with digital art, I was thinking about it a lot: how should it look like? Should it be just my nickname or something more and where should I put it? How big or small should it be? Should I put it as some artists on my full art (which would make the fanart barely visible but at least I would know no one would steal it) or just in the corner for people to potentially erase it and not even mention I've made it or anything. Or maybe should it be on a character I drew with little opacity and matching colors of the character? I feel like not many people talk about it and to me it's a bit confusing 😅

    Hey Marc. I(34m) am loving your videos. They have really helped me out. I'm essentially just beginning in art/digital art in an effort to be able to submit a couple things for review while applying to a a school. as it stands i do not have the skills yet to submit anything. but i did want to let you know, your videos are indeed helping me. while i am doing your learn to draw in 30 days, i am also watching as many of your videos as i can so that i can learn and understand as i continue along this journey. i've been practicing for about a week now. yesterday i decided to see how much of what i learned can i actually apply. needless to say i was actually surprised with my results. yes it still looks like a average elementary school drawing, but it is better than anything i could do a week ago. i am not a student of your class as of yet as my funds are directed towards other projects at this time, but i do look forward to picking it up in the future. anyway, i just wanted to let you know that you are doing fantastic with your videos. i look forward to seeing more of them and rewatching things as i'm learning. thanks again.

    This is one thing that annoys me about the school I’m currently in. I’m wanting to exclusively focus on becoming a masterful character artist, as I follow many East Asian character artists (both illustrators and concept artists). Right now, it’s my weakest thread, and I want to make it my strongest so that I can build a brand and business off of my own characters (a la RossDraws or WLOP sort of deal).
    My school, however, because of the condensed study period (7 and a half months) doesn’t allow for me to really focus on that, and I’m always essentially fainting after school out of mental exhaustion. The biggest thing that annoys me is that it’s a jack of all trades school of sorts. Which no longer fits my interests.
    (Also, if you’re wondering what level I want to reach for character art, search up “Jin Kwang Park”, “Lee Kimsan” and “Christophe Young” on ArtStation. That’s my goal).
    Just makes me worry: I’m 21 and only (roughly) two months ago did I have the epiphany and sudden drive to accomplish this as my self-fulfilling and career goal. Which means that so many others are already massively ahead of me. I worry I’m too late to the bandwagon, so to speak.

      dude, youre 21!!!! thats like a little art baby, youve got alllllll the time in the world !!!! I can assure you, age dosnt matter one bit ( I guess if youre 60+ applying for junior art jobs at competetive companies that might be kinda tough) but otherwise, youve got ur whole life ahead of you!!! please dont ever get discoraged because somone else got ur dream job at like 12 yrs old, cause you arnt them, you are you. its nice to look up to people but at the end of the day your path dosnt have to be like theirs to get the same result, life isnt a math equation, its much more random and chaotic than that. I'll leave you with a nice quote that I roughly translated from my grandma " The most valuable trees take the longest to grow, the easies to chop down is the fastest to go up "

    Hi Mark. I would like to ask for advice on exercises, you recommend performing exercises without touching the tablet with your hand, but to do this, I need to lift my shoulder and use it, respectively, it is much more inconvenient than trying to use my shoulder and elbow while touching the brush with the tablet (after all, I have a simple horizontal table without the possibility of somehow tilt the tablet) and in this regard, I am worried about whether my successes are an illusion. And so I can't figure out in any way whether I should continue as convenient, or somehow re-equip my workplace within the existing (small) budget in order to somehow get rid of excessive tension while performing exercises according to the instructions.

    find good examples, junior artists who I can look up their portfolio because they fit into the companies needs, someone who got the job. Well...Mr. Brunnet you are one of those artists, a super saiyan artist who's portfolio I look at because you and I have been inspired by eastern pop culture. Since your work has elements from pop culture, I study that, and remix it with my work, all in the end to learn from a grandmaster who is teaching me on how to make my work better by using what I like. Artists get better by studying artists who have gone beyond super saiyan two. Enjoy the F1.

      Unless you're applying for a big studio, you should include everything just keep it quality, organized, undestsdnable. .
      For a variety of reasons, big studios want very specialized people. so if that's the case you really want to focus on one thing. Showing other art will be useful too if they happen to like your style, but make the area your focusing on obvious.

    The most hilarious part is when you see a company/person(one man company) and their concept artist has literally worse skills than you (and I’m saying it with exactly zero self confidence and years of drawing behind my back, so you can imagine, if even I say that…)
    How in earth do I compare then? I don’t want to walk backwards….but I’m not needed. I’m often losing hope, not just on art field, but anywhere else. I have the schooling and the experience even, and I just see someone worse getting hired, and I’m entirely ignored. Multiple cases. My channel is not art based tho, but I have a portfolio, which sometimes I update, same goes to cv. And yet, useless.
    I’m thankful for this video, it has excellent tips, but where on earth should I keep digging for work, this is the question after the portfolio thing was cleared.

    • @YTartschool
      @YTartschool  11 місяців тому +5

      The industry is def not too saturated, basically every studio has open positions. All my art recruiter buddies still look for the exact same thing- good portfolios showing a solid grasp on fundamentals. The applicants they get are just too often subpar

  • @octonolite_0

    Marc, I hear that studios are focusing on 3D artists and animators more so than 2D which is frustrating for 2D artists who are feeling shut out in a shrinking market. What are your thoughts on this? Do you have an industry insider info on the matter? Thanks as always for the helpful content!

    • @InkStep
      @InkStep 11 місяців тому +2

      That's only natural, unfortunately. It's all about supply and demand after all. For every one 3D or animation specialist out there you can find ten 2D artists. Meanwhile the actual workload for animations and 3D in a game development cycle is much bigger than for the concept art (unless we are talking about a card game like hearthstone) and thus needs more workers.
      I studied at a game development focused academy for several years and in all of the classes every year I would notice an almost 15 to 5 ratio of concept artist students vs all other roles combined (programmers, 3D modelers, lighting artists, etc.)
      I have also been following the job boards for the past 2 years now and I see most studios posting an opening for animation and 3D artist practically every month, while a concept art position opens up at most once or twice per year.
      Edit: I realize I sound a bit like a doomsayer in this post so let me add that I was just trying to be informative. Definitely do not give up on your passion as an artist - there are always ways to get into the industry if you have the artskills and the knowhow. And even outside the gaming industry there are many ways to make a living as an artist - you just need to be informed and keep up a good mental discipline.

    • @threnoidia
      @threnoidia 11 місяців тому

      @@InkStep I've never heard of game development focused academies. How did you find and choose one? I'd guess in my country we just lump anything about that in with general arts education, but i'm really curious what kind of curriculum they have for those more specialized programs 👀

    • @InkStep
      @InkStep 11 місяців тому +1

      @@threnoidia In my country we had a branch of ARC Academy open ~5 years ago and I signed up for that right away. It's the same as going to any regular uni but only for 2 years. All our teachers were hired professionals from the industry and it was quite the interesting experience overall.
      The curriculum for the art course (which is what I was in) is basically studying every creative role in a AAA studio - game design, concept art, 3d modelling, level design, story writing, etc.
      While visiting all the lectures was required so that we can gain good first time experience and perspective in all those fields, everyone was free to work only on the assignments they were interested in (so concept artists for example basically never did their 3d or level design homework so that they can focus on drawing a lot instead xD).
      The last half of the 2nd year we all gathered together and developed a game demo in order for all the students to put their skills to practice in an actual development pipeline. It was by far the highlight of the whole course and what truly got me into wanting to pursue a career as a game dev.
      I definitely recommend going to a place like that to anyone who is interested in the gaming industry but has next to no idea how it actually works. It will give you a very realistic and hands on view on what being a developer in any of the many possible roles is like nowadays.

      Design isn't about how pretty the render looks it's mainly about problem solving until you fulfill yours or your client's vision, that level of specificity isn't achievable with current ai tech so even if you use ai, design is still something you have to solve with knowledge and creativity.
