I have a 2022 Harley XL883N Iron 883 and I love it. The Sportsters are awesome beautiful motorcycles and the best of all, I love the classic Harley look of these motorcycles.
I'm 6' 240 with a 33 inch inseam. I ride a 2006 Sportster 1200L. The bike is a bit bigger, and has a 4.5 gallon tank. It is also carbureted. It still has a 26" seat height. I had to give up the big touring bikes, not just because of weight, but also because of the seat height. The part of the seat where you sit wasn't that high, but to get on, you had to swing your leg over the back part of the seat, which was a lot higher. I have bad knee and hip joints, and fairly severe arthritis. It became almost impossible to get on those bikes. Also I was having a hard time moving them around in the garage and parking lots. I feel completely comfortable on the Sportster. The 1200 has no problem cruising at high speeds on the freeway. I have bought a lot of new bikes in my life, mostly Japanese. And I got ripped off big time on every one of them. I no longer buy new bikes, or even used bikes from dealers. I am a recently retired fleet services mechanic of 40 years, and I have always worked on my own bikes. Not only is having anything done by a dealer SUPER expensive, but they often do it wrong. No way am I trusting my bikes to a dealer. I have always mounted my own tires, up until just recently, when my medical issues started making that extremely painful. I found a local independent motorcycle shop that has been around for nearly 50 years to mount my tires. I take just the wheels to them. Everything else I do I find it a LOT easier to read an analog gauge than a digital gauge. My 1200 has a digital gauge for the total mileage and trip mileage and that's it. And the bright AZ sun totally wipes it out. Much easier to see a large needle on a big round gauge. Mine also has self canceling turn signals, and I absolutely hate them. You turn the signal on, and it cancels before you reach the turn. You turn it on again, and it keeps flashing for some time after you've made the turn if you don't manually cancel it. I see no need for self canceling turn signals on a motorcycle. They are just a nuisance. The belt drive is a real PITA. Give me a chain any time. It is almost impossible to get the belt tension and wheel alignment both right at the same time. And with the wide belt that has no side to side play like a chain, wheel (and belt and pully) alignment is much more critical than it is with a chain. I am considering converting mine to a chain drive. Your worried about getting hit by a car herder because they are texting, but you put your phone on the handlebars and play with it while riding? That takes the cake. My phone stays in my saddlebag while riding. For me a big part of riding a motorcycle is being out in the wind. If you want a windshield, drive a car. I do wear a full face helmet, not to protect me from the wind, but from all the debris in that wind.
see! Your comment was doing good explaining your arthritis and why you went from a big bike to a small bike which by the way, a 1200 is the same size frame as a 883. You have forward controls which makes you feel like you have a bigger bike but it’s actually the same frame and the larger fuel tank is because it’s probably a custom and not an iron. Where you screw up is when you start knocking other peoples bikes with stupid commentary like… If you want a windshield drive a car. Like you have arthritis and bad hips and bad knees, some people have other ailments or other reasons why they do the things that they do and your total lack of respect and your cute little zingy one-liners is why most people stay to themselves these day. if you can’t respect everybody’s riding desires and likes, I suggest you keep it to yourself because coming across like a douche bag or I believe the big dummies that are so much against windshields are called originalists is unfortunate. A motorcycle is supposed to bring people together, not pick on each other or make fun of their likes. Having the ability to listen to music and adjust it on the fly along with following GPS routes, getting around traffic accidents with alerts in real time, and pulling over and answering the phone when your wife calls is a convenience most modern people enjoy. Thinking that it is some type of riding with freedom limitation is asinine. Good luck with your hips and try to stay off your knees, big boy. Enjoy the ride
@@dansvlogtrucking The phone thing is what bothers me the most. I'm 63 years old, and was 17 before we even got a phone in the house. I can't believe people can't even get away from their phones for one second. Not long ago I was parked in front of a store (in my car) and watched 2 people walking toward each other on the sidewalk in front of the store. Neither one of them saw each other, because they were both banging away on their phones. Sure enough they walked right into each other. One of the phones got dropped on the sidewalk. Is this what we have become? Very sad. I use a '90s style flip phone, and only have it with me about half the time. And when on a motorcycle, or even driving a car, it is put away. It has both voice mail and text, so if someone wants to leave a message they can. I check it once in a while. Part of the reason I ride a motorcycle these days (I started riding on the street at age 16, back in 1975) is to GET AWAY from that sort of thing. It's just me, the bike, and the road. No intrusions. Nothing interrupting my ride. If I have an emergency, I do have the phone with me, but it is MY phone, and I won't allow it to become a ball and chain. I won't live my life around it. I won't become a slave to it.
@@geraldscott4302 Again… ya sound like a bitter old man. Were you one of them that was against the car when you rode a horse and buggy? Phones are super convenient for traffic alerts, weather alerts, music and whatever the F else the rider wants to use it for. No one gives a S what you do with YOUR phone, don’t worry about what the rest of society does with theirs. Just get home and mow your grass.
Tip from someone who has started on an 883 and moved up to Softails and Road Kings. Don't spend money trying to upgrade anything on the bike to make it more like the big Harley's. If you think the bike is too small and not enough power, sell it and get the bike you want. I wasted thousands on a 883 that I didn't get back on resale trying to upgrade it. Buying the bigger Harley solved all my problems.
Hey Dan what a great relaxed critic of the 883. I was torn between the 883 an Indian scout 60 and the new Triumph T100. I think my mind is made up 883. Best educational chilled out review on the internet Gary
All sportsters come with a 5 speed transmission. All of them. The iron 1200 has a bigger engine, of course, 10” apes, mini fairing, different paint job, different accents on the wheels, and that’s about the only differences. They are very nearly the same bike. They even weigh the same. No rear pegs. Btw, I have the exact same bike. It’s my first. Love it. I’ve ridden mine on the highway multiple times going back and forth to my hometown about an hour and half away and it does absolutely fine. It’s not the most comfortable and it does get blown around at 560 lbs but it has no problem keeping up with traffic.
just got my 2020 883 iron I bought what I was told was a extended service plan but when IT was time for the first service it still cost me 450 dollars. The service manager told me that what i had bought was for something else , to be honest by the time he rolled his eyes at me I had already hit the boiling point feeling that i had been ripped off. I went to a dealership the next state over to get the first service done it was a little cheaper but not by much. I tell you this just to say check your paper work and make sure you got what they told you it was. Nice bike, hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy mine and I enjoy mine alot.
Everything that comes with the "extended service plan" has always been historically highway robery of more of your cash. Pretty common knowledge when it comes to buying anything new that has a motor lol. I'm only 34 but been around the block with new motor vehicles .I wouldn't trust most dealers to touch anything i own at this point in my life i do all my own service on all of my stuff be it my artic cat snowmobiles, This same harley as this one in the video , my can am quads, my side by side, My cars and my truck. Otherwise you are literally paying 80 dollars an hour for some school age kid or green around the gills asshole to spin wrenches and further mess more shit up.
The problem is you purchased an extended warranty, not a maintenance service plan. The word “extended” is what matters. Service is never “extended”. It is completed as miles and months accumulate. The service plan at Harley is literally prepaying for the oil changes and stuff as you need them. The “extended” plan is the warranty on the bike after the initial warranty expires from Harley. If you are not satisfied with what you purchased, you can go back to the finance dept who wrote up your contract and cancel any and all extended and or maintenance plans for a pro-rated refund. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise… I already got my refund when I was told the service dept was 4 months behind to be able to do my 1000 mile service and that I must park my bike or risk voiding my warranty if I exceeded 1200 miles. Did the damn service myself and never looked back
