Ken, with you it's like magic. The way you use your eyes to teach is very helpful. Before I saw your videos I was so frustrated. As a karaoke singer I was baffled how to increase my range, and I was shocked when I heard the answer: I needed to open my throat to sing higher. Ken, it seems that learning to be a musician is a lot like exercising where you have to be disciplined and put the time and work in to see the results. When I was young, I began teaching myself to play the guitar. To become faster and faster on the guitar, I have had to keep building strength in my fingers and forearms playing scales endlessly and guitar solos endlessly and doing exercises as well as learning chords and getting better and better at moving from chord to chord and then learning to play in tempo along with songs. No matter how much we know as musicians there is always more to learn. I used to have to buy the sheet music and the C.D. or tape or record to learn a song where as now the music is all free on the internet. Thanks to Eddie Van Halen for the invention of guitar tabs or I never would have been able to read guitar music or learn anything. You are proficient as a musician and singer and are extremely honest. Ads by other vocal coaches who promise people they can be great singers in thirty days is such a scam. Life is tough. Brutally tough and nothing is for free. We have to do the work. Ken, we are all extremely fortunate to have you as our vocal coach (we are learning from the best) and that you share so much of your knowledge with all of us. Thanks for all the outstanding lessons and videos.

I really appreciate all the videos you post about this. I've never taken a singing class and I've been learning by myself through UA-cam and you're the only vocal coach I've seen that actually demonstrates an explains very clear what you're talking about. I'm gonna keep on practicing more. This video is so helpful. Thanks.
For anyone practicing the slides, recording your voice is a really useful tool to measure progress. A break can easily be seen in the waveform as a gap - good slides should be continuous and at a consistent volume/amplitude :)
I'm a high Baritone/low Tenor and I've tried to stretch my chest voice with the straw vocal exercise... and it actually worked...! I could sing 6 or 7 notes higher than I'd been able to sing beforehand, which was the highest Tenor note (with my chest voice), but I felt a lot of strain when I did this, and even though I can hit the highest Tenor note more comfortably, now, I still don't feel that comfortable hitting higher notes with my chest voice. But if I want to go from my chest to head voice, I usually need 2 or 3 chest voice notes to match the note in which my chest voice usually flipps into head voice... And when I try to sing the lowest note I can, with my head voice/falsetto, I always start feeling resonance in my chest as I get lower, but my voice/falsetto usually breaks at E3, and flips into chest voice at C3, usually. I've been trying to do (at least) one good slider (mostly from chest to head voice) for over a month now... But to no avail, apparently. So... I'm pretty sure that I could say that I've seen no results, yet... Can someone please give me advice, based on experience or knowledge?

I think I finally found my mix last summer after almost 14 years of singing, but I'm not sure. It feels like the sound it goes into my head but my chest is still engaging somewhat and adding weight to it. I've tested it against my head voice and it feels and sounds a lot different. I'm a bass so the possibility of hitting those notes I always envied (A4 and up, my current "mix" likes to rest at about the Bb) is super exciting!
I actually made the sound of my chest really small and finely achieved doing around 4 scales of this without the minimum crack. The h tip is great but backing off the chest volume is also great for the beginning. I'm actually spending my free time more than ever ahahahaha

Hey Ken, how is it going? In some of your videos you were calling the high notes of Operatic Tenors "belted chest voice" but they were actually using mixed voice like every other singer. No men can sing higher than their Primo Passaggio in chest voice, which for Tenors is around B3-E4. What you call pulled chest voice is simply a yelly mixed voice. No singer uses chest voice in their high notes, chest voice is a term used for low notes. Please answer if I am wrong.

In this brief tutorial I try to let you know what needs to be done, but if you are serious about developing your voice, you will need to go deep and learn it all, not just tips & tutorials. You have to grow all parts of your voice. There is more to this than can be answered in a UA-cam Comment. I have time to explain this in full in my course. This is important information and it needs to be fully understood. Been starting practice up again, and I notice that the cuperto (or coperto) actually makes getting through the break harder. Whereas with a regular siren, I can just beat it with extra support. Maybe that is one of the real underlying keys to that exercise, in that it might fundamentally make the break more challenging, so you need for finesse and skill.
Ya know Ken. You are quite fantastic. So much knowledge and understanding. I've noticed though, having worked with your exercises, I feel like when I belt above the A4, I'm always in mixed voice instead of pushing it out with a lot of force and power while still being in my chest voice. Is this common or does this even make sense?
I'm old (65)and going to retire next Feb. I sing sometimes and very much enjoy singing even I don't sing well, I mean I struggle singing thru bridges. I want to sing with strong mixed or belt(too greedy?). What I wanna say is, after seeing so many successful improvement from ur program, I also wanna try it after I retirement. Hope u help me to be able to perform in public with confidence. Thx first
I tried this in my appartment, but I backed off because I thougth I sounded stupid. I'm sure it helps tho, but I wonder if my landlords think I have taken any drugs or something, haha!
@@kentamplin My problem when I sing higher notes isn't that I don't necessarily hit them, but theres not that much power to it. I get that "Mickey Mouse" sort of tone on them..And if I try to change the tonality of it, I come back to what you said about air..I will most likely just add more air and compress it, but then it hurts..

Ken- thx so much for these videos. I have 1 question- if I’m brand new to lifting the soft pallet/creating head space and singing in proper head voice, is it normal to experience tension headaches after practicing?
Good video Ken my aim is to build my chest voice bridge around F4 onto around A5, hope to add a few extra notes to the chest, alot of the songs I want to sing Like Europe songs reach higher in the chest voice or maybe these singers have strengthened their head voice.

Did Chris Cornell sing with mixed voice? I've been singing for more than 10 years, but without sing lessons, so, even though I'm more "competent" than people who just started singing recently, I still feel like I'm not as competent as I should be considering the years I've sang, and that includes not being able to sing in mixed voice. I get so frustrated because Chris was capable of hitting F5 effortlessly and I can barely get past D5! (with chest voice, and it's painful)
Hey guys, it's Ken. The question I was just asked was: Is "Bridging" the same as "Mixed Voice?" Bridging is the "passaggio" (i.e. the passage way from chest to head / reinforced falsetto and back) using approximately one or two notes to "bridge" to get from chest to head and back. Mixed Voice is expanding that "passaggio" where you can have a percentage of chest and head voice (i.e. "mix") throughout around an octave of your voice. This octave will vary in note value registration depending on the voice type. Some people can only mix 2-3 notes (because they haven't worked on it), some can do more than an octave.

There is more to this than can be answered in a UA-cam Comment. I have time to explain this in full in my course. This is important information and it needs to be fully understood. I do my best to let you know what needs to be done, but if you are serious about developing your voice, you will need to go deep and learn it all, not just tips quick answers. kentamplinvocalacademy.com

I'm glad you liked it, Sorena!
Love this ken it's working
Awesome!
Great video Ken
That's a great question for my free vocal forum, Damon! Please ask all of your singing related questions over there forum.kentamplinvocalacademy.com/
this is your best video on Mixed voice!
What I'm curious to see in your course is the passagio. You are so good at crossing and going to your mix
Ken, that was awesome. That helped me a lot.
Luv Bee There's a lot more than that! Check them out!
I'm actually a lead singer but I can pull off baritone ken
I'm old (65)and going to retire next Feb. I sing sometimes and very much enjoy singing even I don't sing well, I mean I struggle singing thru bridges. I want to sing with strong mixed or belt(too greedy?). What I wanna say is, after seeing so many successful improvement from ur program, I also wanna try it after I retirement. Hope u help me to be able to perform in public with confidence.
Thx first

Thank you, Ken!
You're welcome, Astrophysicist!
Excellent lesson, thanks 🙏 you rock 😎🎸
Love this! Thanks
Muito obrigado pela dica 🙏🙏🙏👏👏👏
Jonas Almeida You're welcome!
Oh thanks a lot. I have no problems going high, but coming back to chest, with this H, that's it.
I tried this in my appartment, but I backed off because I thougth I sounded stupid. I'm sure it helps tho, but I wonder if my landlords think I have taken any drugs or something, haha!
Åsmund Selland I know exactly what you mean! Do your best!

@@kentamplin I feel like an idiot, but how do I post tho? I've tried for 30minutes now just to figure out how to do that, haha
My dog starts to howl every time I do those.
This is I need.. you are the best.
Ken ,how do you suppose to breath on this exercises ,I always release lots of air when I sing , what am I doing wrong ,as always really enjoy your videos
Love your vids Ken!
Thanks, Mark!
Another great video, another great shirt!
Hi Ken : I reached the D5 without problems (but with so much mask resonance) . I'm a tenor?
My sustained vocal range is G2-G5
My really vocal range is : F1 - C#7
But i prefer too build up the my first 3 Octaves.
A my friend said to me : Your voice is so similar to Dimash voice in some acute.
Mhhh. Heal the world with your voice. I'm so jealous
Мирко Ферайуоло . Good to hear! Keep on singing!
@@kentamplin thanks Ken. I want to send a my video to you one day.
@@Das644 Don't worry i'm not Dimash. Hahahahahha
Only a self-thought singer with much influence by Dimash.
Ken- thx so much for these videos. I have 1 question- if I’m brand new to lifting the soft pallet/creating head space and singing in proper head voice, is it normal to experience tension headaches after practicing?
HKen you are truly the best vocal coach ever😀
Thank you, Cheryl!
Good video Ken my aim is to build my chest voice bridge around F4 onto around A5, hope to add a few extra notes to the chest, alot of the songs I want to sing Like Europe songs reach higher in the chest voice or maybe these singers have strengthened their head voice.
This is really helpful! Thanks a lot sir.
Glad it was helpful!
thx ken. I improve my voice 40% percent only watching your youtube tutorials even probably more because i never know before about head voice and mix voice., bel conto etc..Next year i will save money and buy your singing lessons 2nd The Course + Pro Packs. thank you for sharing some free techniques. Can you do dimash reaction adagion or something from vitas, or something from dee snider this man have strong distortion and not hurting voice even at the age 65.
That's awesome, Sanjin!
2:23 Now there's a shirt!
Damon J. Silver😎
My guide 🤩🤩 I watch your videos everyday 👍🏻👍🏻 BIG FAN and SUPPORT
Super nice video!!!!!! Never had the theory behind. THANK YOU!!!!!!
I'm glad you liked it, Sebbse!
great stuff Ken
Hey guys, it's Ken. The question I was just asked was:
Is "Bridging" the same as "Mixed Voice?"
Bridging is the "passaggio" (i.e. the passage way from chest to head / reinforced falsetto and back) using approximately one or two notes to "bridge" to get from chest to head and back.
My voice breaks while doing the slides and im a baritone trying transform my voice in a tenor, what should I do?
