- Widely regarded as one of the greatest Isle of Man TT Races of all time, the 1992 Senior TT saw perfect conditions all around the Mountain Course with island greats Steve Hislop and Carl Fogarty going head to head for the entire six laps.
Both were hell bent on taking the race win with Fogarty having retired from the Formula One race earlier in the week whilst leading on the Loctite Yamaha and Hislop having finished second on the unfamiliar and unfancied Abus Norton.
The duo slotted into first and second at the end of the opening 37.73-miles with Fogarty holding a 1.2s lead as the race immediately became the showdown it had been billed as.
A lap of 123.09mph second time around saw Hislop lap four seconds quicker than his rival and turn his deficit into an advantage of 2.8s but the gap was fluctuating between every timing point. It was, quite simply, an epic duel in the sunshine between the two fastest men around the TT Course.
With Fogarty at number 4 and Hislop at 19, the duo never saw each other on the road and a slightly slower pit stop for the Scot meant Fogarty nosed ahead once more as they completed the third of six laps, the gap now just one second.
However, Hislop flew on the fourth lap to move some 7.4s clear, the biggest lead anyone would have in the race. Fogarty had no tactics other than to go as fast as possible and he shaved two seconds off Hislop’s lead as they went into the final lap with both riders’ predictions that the outright lap record would go if it was a close race about to come true.
Fogarty was the first to complete the lap with a new outright lap record of 123.61mph and then had an agonising wait to see if he’d done enough. The white Norton of Hislop took the chequered flag just a second slower at 123.50mph, also inside the old lap record, to take a famous win, Norton’s first in the Senior since 1961, by 4.4s.

Phillip McCallen described as an occasional winner at the TT with 11 wins in total and 4 in a week, is a massive understatement. He never seems to get his dues given what he achieved in road racing.
I once saw a Marshall at the TT, an old guy, asked why he gave up 2 weeks of his life, at his age to do it, his reply, which always brings a tear to my eye, was one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. He said; "To watch some of the bravest men in the world, try to achieve greatness." ❤
Wow I'm the sort of guy who relates, although I'm not there, so I Watch on board laps and races as much I can, genuinely the riders are like my favourite boxers and I can only wonder what it feels like being there, what I'm trying to say is I have nothing but respect for these two wheeled warriors.
3 0:14 is 323
Yes,without marshalls, around the world,it would not bee mutch racing, its the most important part of motorsport, but they often bee taken for granted, its best jobtoo have, those time i is spectator on a race,i really miss the radio&direct comunication,it felt naked some how
Only hunky bodybuilders should be allowed to Marshall. I want to see muscly gods not obese gargoyles
Foggy's modesty is legendary......😅
Hizzy's natural talent was THAT good. Remember when he beat Rossi's MotoGP laptime at Donny on that BSB Monstermob Ducati in 2001?
I hear Foggy is now a life skills coach, specialising in humility, discretion and how to be humble..😄
I wonder if Aaron Slight has asked for his help lol.
eh
Wasn't the yam a 2 stroke. No humility. Foggy or marques or el dr. Only fog had the balls to do the tt
@@carlosoruna7174 no that's a YZF750-R

One the greatest TT Races of all times
If John McGuiness says Carl Fogarty is a nutter, then Fogarty is a nutter lol, huge respect to these guys, real racers.
Carl's a DODGER
One nutter saying "Well, now he's a REAL nutter !" :-D
you could always see it in his eyes
@@karlosh9286 John isn't a nutter though. He seems calm and does a good job, he doesn't just go sod it, he rides to what he feels he can ride too, hence why hes lasted so long when others have been injured or worse, when he was badly injured it was because the bike spat him off, like the same bike did to guy martin when he had to jump off it at 140 mph in not the most forgiving part of the course.
I think Michael Dunlop used to be a nutter but hes matured a lot since 2016 ish and doesn't seem to go too far anymore. which is a good thing for health and results. To finish first you must first finish, as they say.
@@theant9821 I guess to me any biker who goes full bore around the Isle of Man course has to be a bit mad.
I find the IoM TT compulsive viewing, mainly because I guess it's something I could never do.
They certainly have a different "risk profile" to me. I'd love to do a lap of the IoM, but my laptime would probably be more like 60 minutes instead of 17 ish mins !
Admittedly some bikers are madder than others. To name a pair, yes, Carl Fogarty does seem a bit mad, along with Guy Martin.
John McG has managed to survive, and also win a real lot of races. So he must be doing something right. He's still pretty quick as a plus 50 year old.
To my knowledge John McG's worst crash was at the NW200 a few years ago, and that was the bikes fault, not his.
I do agree Michael Dunlop is a bit more measured these days. He's still very quick.
Saw this Norton today at The National Motorcycle Museum. Brilliant. 🙂
I personally would love to see them recognize Robert Dunlop in this race. One of the best in the top 3 that day👌🏻
14:20, 21:23 and 25:49 are RD mentions.
I found foggy really arrogant in this. The way he spoke about Phil McCallen was nothing short of rude. Great rider and this was an awsome watch. But I hadn't realised he was still like this 🤣
Let's not forget Robert dunlop, he did come in 3rd after all..
A fantastic documentary, I hope its seen by millions. Fogarty lapped the course with absolutely no regard for his own safety. Two legends of the sport, RIP Steve.
260,389 to date. Just over one quarter million.
Pity we don’t have Steven Hislops opinion. RIP.
McCallen as humble as ever.
Foggy is his own biggest fan.
Damn shame Hizzy couldn't share his views.
McCallen is a lovely bloke, I met him this year at the TT, he gave us a tour of the track and stopped for a chat and a picture after, really really humble guy
@@Nick-Emery Damn fast rider too!
I was privileged enough to be there at Kirk Michael. There is absolutely no exaggerating in this video. We knew we were witnessing something really special and for Norton to win........just fantastic. I'll never forget it.
'Bits of paper in the pits' Barry Symmons left speechless by Norton management. Great win by the team and Steve Hislop in the best ever TT race.
The howl of the Norton still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up even now. Bloody awesome Senior that was...
Hey! Hey! Watch the language. Your 100% right.
The Norton is freaking wicked foggy was wishing he had one....
Well,there's a new one available...think it would kick the Supertwins arse(130kg 220bhp)?
I've seen this story so many times and I've grown up with Foggy, but it's always hilarious listening to him.
According to Foggy the Norton could do 500mph, while he's the only one who ever suffered from mechanical issues.
Priceless.
That's why his face always looks so scrunched up, because it's too close to the shite.
I do give him "style points"for the CCM t-shirt
Barry Sheene is reported to have described Foggy as having an incurable eye disease, as in "If I'd been given a factory NSR ride I could have won the 500 GP championship, no question, I would have been the champion!"
@@smokerjim Great quote, and one that I've never heard before.
Accurate too - like many great sportspeople*, Foggy's supreme confidence borders on arrogance, and not without good reason, as he was an incredibly talented rider.
Was he right though?
Difficult to say, but I'd suggest no.
Honda, and for that matter, Cagiva, clearly didn't think that he could mount a serious championship challenge either, or he'd have been given the opportunity** - Honda are in the business of winning championships, (and selling all manner of vehicles), and if they thought Foggy could bring a championship home, he'd surely have been given an NSR - a British champion would have been hugely significant during the 1990s, given the size of the UK sportsbike market at the time.
As an outsider, with no connection to motorbike racing, it looked like Honda, and Cagiva/Ducati saw Carl Fogarty as a top level production racer, but not a Grand Prix racer, aside from half a dozen wildcard rides.
*Barry Sheene was hardly lacking in confidence himself.
**Obviously there were, (and still are) other considerations in racing,
though I couldn't give any insight into the internal politics of the paddock - there could always be other reasons he never got a GP ride.
And then there was Joey. The complete opposite. Humble AND also a stone cold winner.
Living near Liverpool and taking the ferry to the Isle of Man to see this race in my teenage years was a wonderful experience. Now living in Scottsdale, AZ and riding motorcycles I often think back to the TT’s. One day I’ll return to enjoy that race with my three boys
It's amazing how that lovely Norton sounds on the overrun off throttle, sounds like the modern day audible traction control, epic performance, epic bike
sounds like a real pig to work on though
Fogarty talks as fast as he rides! Just slightly easier to understand than Guy Martin.
He doesn't talk fast at all
@@alonzowilliams116 Oh. OK. From 3:23 to 3:29 he might have said ten words without any break between them. I'm not trying to undercut your comment, but yeah... you are wrong. Be well.
@@giantfisher if you ride be safe and have fun 🏍✌🏾
@@alonzowilliams116 Please forgive me, I'm Californian. A disease by definition. I'm trying to better myself. I mean no harm.
One of the best races of all time when everything worked, two of the best riders just brilliant. A bloody shame that Hizzy isn't around to talk about it, sadly missed by many.
I went to the same school as Hizzy and he used to fix/MOT my bikes in the late 80s. He worked at Olivers Garage when he was riding at the IOM. He had stopped by '92. I was at his funeral in Hawick & at the cemetery at Southdean. It was very emotional seeing him laid to rest beside his dad and his brother Garry who was killed at Silloth in '82.
@@MarkSiosal I watched Hizzy the Year before he died in BSB he rode that Bike like he nicked it, I think he won the Championship on the Paul Bird Ducati.
@@johnpartridge7623 yep he did. On the Monster Mob Ducati which is in the museum in Hawick, just up the road from me. Although he eventually grew on me, I didn't like Shakey Byrne much because he took Hizzy's ride at the time. Obviously ended up seeing him as a brilliant bloke & amazing talent but just for that year I wanted to see him beat lol. Steve was one of the nicest guys you could meet even before he was famous. He used to show me his latest machine & showed me round Olivers (the garage he worked at) pretty big TT race bike collection a few times which was bikes from the 50s onwards at the time. Great memories.
@@MarkSiosal Monster Mob, the Name I just couldn't remember, I never met Hizzy but after reading various Magazines & Books etc I gather he was one of the nicest blokes around the Paddock & certainly the fastest.
@@johnpartridge7623 i can assure you he was one of the nicest people you could ever meet. I used to sit with him and chat while he worked on my bikes back in the late 80s and it was like talking to your best mate. Just a really humble, nice kind man.
As an above average rider for nearly 60 years all I can say is every single IOM TT pilot deserves immense praise. At my best I couldn't hold a candle to any of them, let alone guys like Foggy, Islap and the Dunlap brothers!
been on bikes 55 yrs well im still here ha ha but the TT ?? they have something i dont respect xx
When you dont have a budget of millions $$, you work on the best that you can get out of a smaller budget....what a great video, thanks
Such a great documentary, thanks to whoever put this together.
Robert Dunlopdid not get the credit he deserved in this race.
Absolutely tear jerking!... waves of Nostalgia are building within.. I was there at the IOM TT that year... Grown men were in tears seeing that Norton had finallyWon a TT again . Both riders at the very top of there game. Can’t believe in sheer ingratitude of the Norton Executive Bosses when the team returned home victorious... moaning about the cleanliness in the pits... FFS!!! they should’ve been kissin’ the asses of the guys that made that win possible... Unbelievable... We remember you Whizzy Hizzy!.... I bet you pulled a wheelie through the pearly gates. Fantastic racing... & an Epic event. Breathtaking...
I am 62 years old, I and my family have been " speed freaks" all our lives, I am a 3rd generation, I have 2 sons that are carrying on it seems, we have had a successful business that has allowed us to build and go places from the Salt flats to nitro funny cars, we do retro racing. This past year we finally went to the isle of man. No, none of us race bikes but we had to go, for one it's beautiful, but the men, the speed, the skill level, the machines are absolutely on a level like no other competition, there is nothing absolutely nothing that compares to it, it doesn't matter if your not a great big fan of motorcycles, if your a fan of speed, skill and just flat out bravery then god knows you must agree, I know I am commenting on Peter's run bit all these riders are ridiculously good, I have been to every major automotive event in the world, from indy, Daytona, formula 1, nhra finals, dirt track finals, monster jam finals, world super bike finals, and NOTHING COMPARES TO THE ISLE OF MAN. PUT IT ON YOUR BUCKET LIST
You’re living the dream. Jealous. 😁. In a good way
Great stuff good old Norton foggy sorry mate you got beaten 👍😉 historic
One of the greatest TT duels of all time.... When the British made rotary engined Norton won against the might of Japan! 🔥
Those were the days , for us lot to cherish , the younger lot to wish they were born 20 years earlier . 💝 .
Mad respect to all tt racers past, present and future whether your the number one to last place all tt racers are the ultimate racers and the TT is the greatest race course in the world it would be my dream come true to see a TT race live. Me and my father were going to come the year they had hoove and mouth disease and it was cancelled and my Dad has since passed away something I wanted to do with him .
Jesus, what a course, what a race, what riders! What a thrill, nuts, adrenaline junkies, brave and lucky too
I was there, it really was an amazing race, and the atmosphere was electric when it looked like the Nortons were looking good for the win
Epic battle that will be forever immortalised as ‘the’ TT race.. Hizzy & Foggy, legends..
Looking forward so much to 2022 IOM..with Rona a distant memory!
RIP Steve, Thanks pal.
I want to see guy and foggy chat together , it be like the meeting of minds , one who thinks “ I’ll give it a crack “ to the other “ your going to lose “
Best sound from the Norton. Thank you
Happy to have watched this. These heroes of mine. Rip Joey Dunlop
Cheers to these hard men riding hard bikes. Lovem. And I hope to see an Isle of Man TT in person someday.
Awesome video, the Norton sounded so good couldn't imagine how much balls it took to get that win.
These guys are warriors who have prevailed and survived. Amazing men! To bad that Norton could not parley that performance into a resurgence.
At the time I felt very compromised. I was a huge Carl Fogarty fan. But to have a Norton, at a TT, that was capable of winning. The result was always going to be great and disappointing at the same time.
Totally brilliant on reflection.
BRAVE MEN these guy's BALLS of Steel !!!!
WHAT A REPLY.
Joey dunlop TT LEGEND
Julian Ryder. What happened to him? He was the best commentator. Period! He was simply the best. Listening to races is not the same! Greatest race in the world! With the greatest riders! Foggy is one of the greatest rider, EVER! JOEY IS KING OF THE MOUNTAIN!
I think he only retired in the last few years, he (and I) got pretty emotional as you can imagine. One of those voices you associate with the racing.
I never understood why the isl of man tt race was so iconic till I hocked into the whole "cafe racer" back history...it is the Origin of every thing...all bike culture in the UK stems from it...great that Norton won!!!.😎
By far the most exciting race i have ever seen and i have seen a few ,true gladiator stuff and when the TT was at its best in my opinion
Foggy had about half an OWO1 left at the finish. lol
Respect !
Amazing human beings , two legends .brilliant video
I used to go IoM in the early 60s and watch the TT races
Wow , so you've seen most of the greatest racers in person ? Born in the early 60s here , I'm jealous.
@@michaelworse6034 Sadly in those days there were many crashes and fatalities...
Both amazing riders and what a race! You have to ignore Foggy's ego🤦
@19:21 wow, what shot and a beast of a rider and bike.
Incredible day. Thank you for posting this. I did not see it live
It takes a brave man to race the TT the commitment and fearlessness to drive like that is honorable road racing is a very risky business so many have died
it is just awe inspiring, let's the jaw drop to see that the best (and luckiest...) not only survive this mayhem but even seem to be able to control that with pinpoint accuracy... and all that for the pride and not for the money... great documentary !
Really enjoyed this. I was at the TT that year, as a fairly new motorcycle rider. I didn't really know much about the TT at the time. I happened to have a couple of weeks holiday coming up at work and went on a whim.
It was without doubt the most intense and incredible sporting event that I have ever witnessed. The atmosphere in the crowd during the Senior race was electric. I still occasionally talk about it to friends, to this day, and it's only with the benefit of hindsight that I have come to understand what it was that I watched that day. I'd love to go back. Someday, I will, for sure.
Truly epic racing all the way back in the early 90s....top darts!
R I P Hizzy, Robert , joey and all the other lads, can't beleive it.s 30 years ago
Followed foggy all over world super bike ..love him he’s all tongue in cheek wish Steve was still with us I saw him break his neck at brands and he came back…so sad he’s not here today
The IoMTT is the greatest race in the world.
On my bucket list.
I'm at Indy every year though. Sacrifices.
Greatest moment for me meeting Foggy, and the funny thing is- he would not have a clue meeting me or a single memory of it lmfao 🤣
Best stay free I've ever seen and I've been here a long time this is the key we'll beat then at ther own game
we need mooooooooore like this
TT is love 💞💞💞
Omfg hislop thats a man on a mission
I watched Foggy win in 1990’ Trevor nation second on the Norton, he put in an incredible Lap in practice as I recall, Big Foggy fan ever since 🙌🏼
Great film, fantastic interviews
great race all over, love it.
Remember it well Steve sprey and Trevor nation ran the nortan up to then I think.. yep watching hizzy receiving the trophy in Douglas awesome
Greatest race ever
No 2018 greatest senior race ever
Still great race. I fell out of my chair ,leaning over so far to make the corners.
fantastic content
You know, I bet that 120mph lap at 5am was something awesome to see.... I need to build a time machine.
Foggy, king of the back handed compliment.....
God, Foggy's scary. Seriously though, in 1991 and 1992 me and my Dad drove over from Yorkshire to Llandudno's Great Orme where we could pick up the Manx Radio commentary. Both races were incredible but I think the Honda v Honda duel just pipped it for me.
I remember watching that on the TV many years ago it was a amazing race so exciting
I think you have to watch the video again and understand the English, everything Foggy says is spot on
Must say you to are great for this TT stuff. Great Job. Michael is on another level
This is pure quality. Love the interviews spread throughout the race. More interesting than watching the live races IMO.
Wow I would love to see a commentary version like this of every year of the TT. It’s so great hearing the backstory while watching bits of the race and hearing all of the details of what was good and what was bad. Was the engine going to make it?? ETC
Is there any more episodes like this one??
Foggy is freakin' an older Guy Martin! Never noticed it before.
Hehe yh, crazy adrenaline junky eyes 👀
Steve hislop natural born racer used to love hizzy
Great race and great racers. The TT is still the best racing in the world.
Fantastic!
Brilliant!
Unfortunately we will never see a wsb champion on the iom. Not to mention a should have been multiple wsb champion. Only he didn't get the sponsorship. R.i.p steve
What a great film
I love Fogarty's overt thoughts and feelings. I think the same way.
I've always been a huge Foggy fan but he sounds a bit arrogant here. He said Joey was no longer a threat but Joey won another 15 TT races after Foggy won his last of three
He said Joey was no threat to him, he’s right!
Foggy was a far better rider than Joey Dunlop, as he proved by becoming multiple World Superbike Champion.
Joey Dunlop was a prolific TT winner, but he was never the greatest TT Rider, those accolades belong to Hailwood, Agostini, Geoff Duke…and yes, Carl Fogarty, all World Champions!
@@TheChickenLineYou see that statue? It ain't Foggy. Johnny Rea would have destroyed Foggy on a short circuit. Joey destroyed him on road races. The three most successful track guys in the past 30 years had a look at the TT and basically went 'fuck that'
(Doohan, Rossi and Rea....all loved their run off areas)
@@BrianBell4073 You fail to understand. I respect Joey for his achievements, but he was unable to take TT wins when the top short circuit riders raced…Joey was a Gladiator on the road circuit, but, never one of the greatest riders in history, I’m sorry to burst your bubble…even Ian Hutchinson could never progress further than Supersport, Peter Hickman further than BSB…I’ve been going to the TT since the Hailwood days, many of my friends where successful TT riders and I can assure you that Joey was always there, like John McGuiness…but even they would never put their career achievements above the likes of Mike Hailwood, Ago, Foggy…racing isn’t measured by the length of a run off but courage is, or to some people ‘stupidity’, and that’s their choice!
Further, it took 3yrs to know the course, it probably takes 4-5 now because of the speeds. Joey may have beaten Foggy and others on their TT debut, but once these riders got to grips with the circuit they not only beat Joey but they also broke the lap records, something that Joey never done, he never held a lap record and therefore, Never “Smashed” his opponents!
Again, I take no pleasure in bursting your bubble…
@@TheChickenLine joey dunlop was 5 time's World champion.
I had a Mazda RX7 from the late 1980s back in the early 90s. Yeah it drank fuel too . That's rotary engines for you !
Did it drink oil as well?
@@stephentrout7879 It did have a bit of an appetite for I think "Mobil 1" oil. Not quite as bad as its petrol drinking habit.
What always "got me" , was the "afterburner" on the OEM exhaust manifold.
It wasn't there to make it go faster, in fact it restricted performance. The "afterburrner" was just putting in some extra air into the exhaust gases to help burn off the fuel that had gone straight through the combustion chamber. i.e. it helped with emissions, and made the OEM exhaust pipe one of the dearest on any car at the time. (about £1500 ish)
Janspeed offered an exhaust, that just threw away the after burner, and let the unburnt petrol out. Half the price (£750 ish ) of the official Mazda one , and it got a performance increase , IIRC of about 20 to 30 BHP. I never fitted the janspeed one, I got rid of the car before the exhaust fell apart !
An interesting field of competitors.
Never a Foggy fan but I've sort of warmed to him and understand his drive after watching this
