The reaction I heard from musicians after Whiplash was they never would have put up with that, especially jazz musicians. They all said they would have just walked out.

I really liked Rays take on this. There are people who would be like that as teachers and also the ones to take it as students. Definitely not in high end school of past twondecades, but before that? It was quite the reality.
I got smacked on my finger quite a few times in the 90's by the piano teacher.

I mean in the story, it goes obviously further than even the harshest teachers, as (SPOILER AHEAD) we learn that he led one of his pupils to suicide.

To be fair for "The Pianist" you said that the piano wasn't out of tune - but the piece the man was playing was Chopin Ballade in G minor and the final note did sound... well like an F#. So not only was the piano almost half-step out of tune, but the man probably played the correct notes as well :D

I recall seeing an interview with Adrien Brody where he stated he actually learned to play all of the music for The Pianist so they could film his actual hands playing with no double or cuts. That's why the audio syncs so perfectly, he is actually playing the piece (even though I think his playing wasn't used for the final audio).

As far as jazz directors go, they do not typically “conduct” the group by providing rhythm past the first few beats. Jazz, like you are explaining of group cohesion, is very much based on listening to each other as opposed to watching a conductor. The rationale, I believe, is a good Jazz ensemble should be a well oiled machine not needing direction.

when it comes to the scene from "the pianist", the reason he hit the G and not the F# even though it sounded like it was in F#, is because the original piece - ballade no'1 by Chopin, is in G minor, I don't know why they made it sound like F#, but the performance was right it seemed.

I'm a violin maker, and I was at an auction 5 or 6 years ago where one of the prop violins from The Red Violin was sold. It was totally playable as a 4-string baroque instrument. I think the movie originally had several props, some of which were playable, while others were not. I do recall that they were set up by J.A. Beare, so they would've been set up correctly. No way to tell how well they were ultimately used in the movie, though.

What’s interesting is, for Whiplash, JK Simmons actually has a background in music, got a degree in music even and played guitar in coffee shops, & Miles Teller began drum lessons when he was 15 and still plays. They rlly casted that film rlly well

Yes, also the tuning on the Baroque instrument is tuned differently, instead of it tuned as 440, which is the Modern way of tuning, the Baroque Violin is tuned to 415. So yes. Anyways, great stuff!

Love the videos! Always appreciate the insight and it's nice to get some historical considerations as well with the instrumentation.
Just friendly critique, I'm wondering if the number of splices/cuts/zoom ins could be reduced in the editing. I know it's to emphasize the dialogue that's being shared but sometimes I think it would actually help if there's a little less, as to allow you to really focus in on what's being said (eg. 1:55-2:10 or so kinda stuck out to me).

@RayChenViolinist Love hearing you're take on Whiplash. Its easy to forget that it's a film that's designed to evoke an emotional response but yeah Fletcher is portrayed as the bad guy in the film looking for his Charlie Parker through, as you say questionable teaching methods.
Me personally, I avoided music school but I did get a second degree after my first and play in volunteer groups and it's taught me to not care about making money from music and it's given me a neutral space I completely trust as someone who deals with general anxiety on occasion.

Jazz band you just kind of count them off, then get the hell out of the way. You might do cues at important parts or at the end of a solo, though. Whiplash really annoys me because it felt like it glorified bad teachers. (I've had orchestra directors who yell, and it's not a fun environment to be in.) Ironically, though, it seems like the orchestra conductors are the yellers. The jazz seminars I've had were always run like you were a professional, and treated as such. (Which was a huge culture shift to deal with when you're 18.)

    • @elissahunt
      @elissahunt 10 місяців тому +3

Yeah, this didn't really feel right to me, either. I haven't seen the movie, but I feel the writers were more interested in making drama than realism (which isn't a bad thing from a story telling perspective). In my experience, a jazz musician who can't keep up with the group skill-wise will just be replaced. I got into my high school jazz band because the original guy couldn't cut it, but I've seen professional bands do the same.

The cardinal rule is that a teacher should never, never sabotage a student or injure him physically or psychically! Even for a stern master, the relationship must be one of trust. The trust cannot be abused.😳

Brother ray Chen...the human psyche is out of control, it's hard to focus on one thing. When we fantasize about flying, or having superpowers, it's a form of escape. But what's wrong with that? If escaping gives you superpowers, isn't it worth it? Violin is discipline, but life isn't discipline, life is a fantasy, an escape, daydreams, imagination, that's the first step to developing your inner superpowers!
