Here I rate TV scenes from famous TV shows (Big Bang Theory anyone?) which have musicians, and give you the inside scoop on how they're actually playing. And you'll even get to see my cringey acting debut in a TV Show playing the violin. Should've practiced it before...

Which actors do you think practiced more? 🎵Make sure you practice too with everyone on Tonic: tonicmusic.app/join-in
Jenna Ortega actually took a bunch of lessons to play that song. I think she did really well (even if it's impossible to play for one person).
I have to say that Ray Chen guy really phoned it in. I suspect he's never even touched a violin before this scene. 😁
Ling Ling did
(didn't u hear, she's and acting prodigy too)
🤣🤣
I love your Tonic app of course ... I play ... I sing Opera ... and I saw your 2 Tonic stickers on your PC. 🎉 Great idea !
According to me, Tonic is the best learning music app for musicians/singers.
I've recently listened to a young norwegian trio of 3 girls aged from 11 to 13 years old ! It was like she played in my bedroom !
Musicians compose music.
But Ray, you compose a music smart app. So you compose the next generation of musicians/singers. ❤
So Ray, I give you the best Music Smart Composition Oscar. 🎵🏆
Raaaay!!!
Can you please react to "If I Stay" too? It's a story about a cellist surrounded by rock musicians or rock music fans...
it's a nice movie, quite tragic..
but I wanna know your thoughts about it 🥰🥰
"Violinists don't cry; VIOLISTS cry"
As a viola player, that came out of nowhere and smacked me in the face- I absolutely lost it lol * crying *
I recall Cumberbatch said in an interview that he found it embarrassing to pretend to play the violin for the drama 😂😂
Ray is always so much more generous than Twoset, and also me in these ratings. "Well, everything was wrong, they used a guitar instead of a violin, and the player had no hands, 7/10"
I think it's because I know some of these actors and they actually read/watch youtube vids and comments from time to time. If someone from the fashion industry started making comments/roasting how musicians dress on stage, we'd be in the same boat.
@@RayChenViolinist Oh man that reminds me of the video of Midori at Carnegie Hall in 1990 and all the outfits look super of-the-time.
Anyway, fair enough, I totally understand. (But if you want to do some of the egregiously bad ones, that's cool too!) I don't blame the actors anyway, I'd do whatever someone hired for me too. I was once in a commercial for a large fruit-based computer brand, as an orchestral violinist, and when we got to set they told us to do something completely different than what we were originally told.
@@RayChenViolinist You are not at a fashion show when you are at the stage so fashion industry can't blame you. But they are litreally try to make a musician scene.
@@Aaron-xq6hv Apple? 🤔 Lol
Benedict Cumberbitch had me rolling on the floor crying with laughter.
When Ray demonstrated the proper bow hold I couldn't stop admiring how pretty his fingers are 😆
S A C R I L E G I O U S
Ray is now really picking up where Brett and Eddy left off 😅
That Cellist "turtle emerging from its shell" cracks me up so much 😂
12:17 Ray does play the viola, right? The straight face that comes right after 😂
Congrats on your acting debut, Ray! Well done! 👏👏👏🤩🎼🎵🎶🎻💖💯
X2
😮I have just noticed that Ray has the most ridiculously long little finger on his left hand ever. Prefect for a violinist.
In the Arcane series there's a particular scene of a guy who plays some sort of violin. Hope you review that one.
Ray Chen supremacy
Great suggestion! Next video!
@@RayChenViolinist hmmmm i wonder who that violinist is....
Tár -- 10/10 in every single scene. Not a TV show, true, but the movie's musical accuracy is so remarkable it deserves a video of its own.
from my personal experience from working on movies is that quite often the actors have no clue what actual music is playing or going to be used or how dynamically it will be played, only what direction they're given by the director, sometimes you can get purposeful overlay but quite often it's pretty difficult or not cost effective to try and match to something that may change even slightly and ruin the entire thing, so they just do a general take and use the best parts they can in editing, not the best idea, but sometimes that's all you got.
That's upto how dedicated the actor/actress to their role, I think. A fully commited person would have asked which piece is supposedly played and try to match it, especially when music is essential to the building of character.
With Wednesday…There was an article with her talking about the cello active. I love how she actually mentioned the experience of taking lessons so she can be more precise with the cello feature.
12:31
Me: this guy's playing looks pretty legit
A woman: Ray Chen
Me: oh, okay!
Mind blown. I watched Mozart in the Jungle years ago (it’s actually what inspired me to pick up my violin again after decades). I had no idea who Ray Chen was back then. Now, looking back, I can’t believe it was him in the scene! I definitely should rewatch the show because now I’d be watching from a different perspective.
"Benedict Cumberbitch" absolutely killed me dead 💀
Ray giving the most polite reviews 🐱
Seems Tala Ashe (Legends of Tomorrow) actually plays/played the violin. She tweeted about it back on Feb 20, 2018 with some pics of herself as a kid with her violin.
Great to hear Ray Chen speaking on these clips
Ray is way too nice. I played violin 20 years ago when I was a kid and I cringe so much I would rate all of them 1/10😂
I’d LOVE to see Ray react to Roman Kim, maybe Eine Kleine Nacht Musik? TwoSet said it was hard, and I absolutely believe them. Would love to hear about it from a soloist POV
He’s a very good soloist and composer as well… I too would like ray to react to him though it’s be cool
I really love Ray's response with a smile when she called his name...that's so cool...you were featured in a movie❤❤❤...
More, Ray! That was so good!
Learned a lot, thank you!
Loved seeing you at the MSO last night! Amazing performance.
Ray has got to be one of the most polite and nicest people you could meet!!! I really hope I get to in November as there's a question about Mozart I'd like to ask him!
Ray, you re awesome. You are a truly exemple for me and I admire you and your playing. It is so inspiaring to watch you play😊❤
whoa it's been so many years now i forgot u used to have an accent!!! blast from the past with that old twoset clip heheh and congrats on ur movie cameo!!
gotta love the Mendelssohn in the backround
Yes, but I'm wondering if it's Brett Yang's Mendy? It sounds like it
It was said that Jenna Ortega did have a few cello lessons to imitate playing it. I think she had like 2 months of lessons
I just watched your concert in melbourne playing tchaikovsky violin concerto (june 29) the clapping between movements was pretty SACRELIGOUS.
Also bro we know you're lowkey a good actor, sometimes I have to remind myself Hank chang is you 💀🤣
Ray chen is my favorite violinist. Never thought he could be my favorite youtuber as well.
That Big Bang theory scene… were her fingers even moving?! 😂
12:03 as a violist (main) and violinist (just for fun i used to play violin) this was really funny 😂 i was lmao 😂😂😂❤
It's so lovely that you focus on the positives! Too many people critique others while most people are trying to do a good job. Important to have perspective. Nobody is good at everything
Love the video 💕
But why did the editor cut off at the end 🙈 was linda funny lol
Cheers! You've gained a bew subscriber👏
Benedict's bow hold is Italian style 🤌
Ray was in Mozart in the Jungle? I don' t even remember this. Now I have to rewatch the show.
The light-saber battle is legit -- I have seen beginning oboists do this while waiting for their lesson. Usually boys.
Ray can you please compare synthetic bow hair on a wood bow? I’m buying a good bow soon and would love some info.
As a floutist, that lightsaber fight was horrifying...
I would DIE for a cover of Paint it Black on the Violin from him
I kinda wish you had Hardison playing the violin from Leverage. But this was a really good reaction i enjoyed it lol
Thank you, very interesting, I love the musical analysis of films. Jenna Ortega learned to play the cello for this film. 🙂
Why’s everybody so afraid of criticizing Benedict Cumberbatch? That bow hold! A great actor ought to learn harder to hold the bow more convincingly like a real violinist.
Excited for the next #rayviewme I think I’ve made tons of progress since I was reviewed.
I’d love to see your reactions to The Red Violin! 😊
Can we see you in more movies? 🥺
I always wonder how often the performers hear or know of the music that they'll be mimicking. And, how much heads up and practice do they get before filming?
12:47 haha no way! I watched Mozart in the Jungle at the very beginning of my interest in classical music and I totally didn’t know that was Ray Chen😂😂😂I gotta rewatch it and see what I missed now!
Just seeing that old TwoSet clip, I just noticed how much the Aussie accent has gone away.
5:29 - Oh no, I'm cracking up so much at this while at my desk at work!
As someone learning to play musical instruments the scene with the two kids sword fighting with flutes was horrifying to me.
Mozart in the jungle is awesome, I love it!
"Until the end of time" :D
Hello,Rey, great review. It is interesting when you explain how to hold the bow correctly, with what inclination. Open a school, you explain interesting!)
omg... here I am, almost completing 4 years of Violin, and suddenly I decide to change my bow hold because of Ray lol. I hope my teacher doesn't mind...
8:33 i was listening and suddenly heard Mendelssohn violin concerto playing a yell from my room “MENDELSSOHN VIOLIN CONCERTO!” At 2 am because I couldn’t hold back my joy.
It sounds like Brett's 4 mil, does it not?
14:50 now that's how it feels like a shostacovich!
Ray: You can hear the difference there.
Me: *Can't hear any difference* therefore I'm broken.
One of the only reasons why I watched Mozart in the Jungle is because I found out that you and other famous musicians were in it.
12:16 - That needs to be a gif 😄
Ray, did you watch The Blue Orchestra anime? It is is a nice classical music anime worth watching.
off topic : the cc was turned on automatically and in the intro when Ray was saying "I'm violinist Ray Chen", it showed "I'm violence Ray Chen" 🤣😂
That was her powers
Love your videos (and your playing)! But why do you have an American accent when talking to us but an Australian accent when talking to Brett and Eddie?
"That's true" 😂
11:32 ow OW!
Thanks sharing! So different for professional musician in a movie. Maybe you will have a real movie & we can go to cinema to watch it!
Do not make silly comparisons: Two Ser Violin is wonderful....and so Is Chen
Can somebody please tell me what the last piece was? (15.55, Legends of Tomorrow.)
do master and commander?
😅I usually drink coffee after a rehearsal.😅😅😅😅😅🌌💨
12:16 THAT'S true que miedo.... pero se entiende.....
Rey,How to play J.S. Bach.? What is the complexity of the strokes in the right hand?
I'm a little confused. Is Leonard from Big Bang Theory hoöding his bow upside down? 😯 How sacrilegous
Ray so sus about the Kodali duo 😂
It seemed like Wednesday was playing accurately when I watched it but I really wasn't sure. I guess I'd finally find out if she really was
She does take lessons
@@kenya1422oh, that makes sense. I'm not a cellist nor a violinist but I could quite tell she wasn't just totally faking it
As a saxophonist it pains me to see saxophone played in most media. The worst offenders being the actors/actresses "playing" an alto saxophone and HEARING a bari sax. Like literally the wrong instrument. Of course it's not their fault for what the set design/costume/director/sound design wants... but I mean come ON!!
Technically Ray didn't act, he was being himself, wasn't he?
Ray being the world class soloist is actually so much nicer than twoset reacting to fake playing
2 set are getting it fun and making comedy stuf ray react to it serios
I don’t even understand what you’re trying to say
Ray ! Jenna Ortega was not supposed to look like she's tapping the bow over the strings but to pull them T-T It's a pizzicato section !
bros playing with the bow on the wrong way
Have you tried watching our shing days?
No way
you are being so generous with the ratings 😅 be honest
Since violin play is so often butchered in films (and not only violins) I wonder, how long do you really need to mimic the proper movement of the bow, bow hold and basic vibrato, disregarding actual play, because obviously we are only mimicking it.
Actors spend months on learning certain things so I'd assume months for a violin would be enough to grasp the basics... (wannabe violinist here, albeit a tad older...XD).
As for the orchestra thing - Ao no Orchestra shows the struggle of synchronising with other people in the orchestra.
If they're going to "air bow" then wouldn't it just be better to use a bow with no rosin on it?
For Wednesday, Jenna Ortega had never played the cello before filming Wednesday, but she learned it for the role. She's really playing it in that scene.
Wait, if asking people to play in a chmaber group together means to want to date, thats pretty shallow or am i being too naive?😅
Elliot Page did have a stunt double that can actually play the violin.
Oh really? Did not actually know that, cuz it looks quite (a bit) real!
I thought that the actor that played Wednesday was studying cello for weeks for this scene.
I believe Benedict actually did about 6 mos of lessons...
Lol right...2 minutes each once every two weeks
if you cring you lose😂
Laugh. Jonny Galecki has been playing cello since he was a kid.
Cumberbatch uses the Italian bowhold, that's why his hand is like that.
