Every war brings a new set of learning bcurves and skills.
The US benefited greatly from what the British learned in the Malay conflict about long term recon in jungle environments. The British learned the hard way about parachuting into primary canopy jungle..(bad idea). They also learned how to take proper care of their clothes and feet to keep from getting fungus, immersion foot and a variety of other nasties.
I had the good fortune to be trained in jungle survival by a former SAS officer and two SERE instructors.
Every war teaches a little more.
Korea taught the great use of helicopter extraction of wounded to MASH hospitals....then in Vietnam the survival rates went way way up. Then in the Middle East the survival rates went up even more.
People are horrified when soldiers come home losing limbs.....but that's the thing......now they come home when before they would have died on the battlefield.
The technology for survivability is so much higher than say WW2.

Vietnam Veterans deserve a lifetime of thanks. They are the Giants who's backs men like myself stood upon when we deployed & fought for our lives in Iraq. Right before we punched out to the sandbox, our Brigade had several Vietnam veterans give us a "locked & closed door briefing" on what we were about to experience. What those combat vets shared with us saved many of our lives & helped us do our jobs better than any training the Army had ever given us. I am alive because of the lessons, tactics & stories they shared with us. Read the book written by David Morrell. It's even better than the movie.

I was stationed at Ft.Bragg,NC in the 1980s. And I remember the many guys who loved this scene. They corrected the insignia on Col. Troutman's beret.

Shortly after this my all time favorite line is said by Richard Crenna "you said that many don't forget one thing...a good supply of body bags." They just don't make movies like this any more

Reminds me of a old boss I had. He demoted some guy who couldn't cut it at his job. I had worked with the same boss at a different company until they moved out of the US. We crossed paths years later and he got me hired on the spot. He gave me a great reference a long these lines. Semper fi

This is a scene that lasts a little over ninety seconds, but the Colonel flat out gives these folks some exposition! He's almost Rambo's agent!

I always liked the exchange at the very end of the conversation between the Sheriff and Col. Troutman, "You mean to tell me 200 men against your boy is a no-win situation for us" Col. Troutman: "If you send that many don't forget one thing" Sheriff: "What?" Col. Troutman: "A good supply of body bags"

And that's how you set up a character like Rambo to an audience. You send in a guy like Colonial Troutman to explain who he is in under 2 minutes.
