This is my favorite Rush song. It's also one of my favorite songs ever. I first heard it on a Greyhound bus with my little all aluminum Sony Walkman that I got in Toronto. I was fourteen and riding the Greyhound bus from South Florida up to Detroit. It was oddly comforting.
Neil's work on the drums are second to none. But his talent for creating lyrics is nothing but masterful. He is able to transcend you on a journey through the song. On every Rush album, it's his words that give life and meaning to the music, with Geddy and Alex filling in the blanks and adding the color. Neil may be the drummers drummer. I agree with all that. As for the Hall of Fame speech, enjoyable though that is, this short two-minute clip, with Geddy's thoughts on the event, moves me to tears - ua-cam.com/video/5MXI03-qRU0/v-deo.html
Yes, there is music being made like this today, in America and around the world. It's just *not being played on American radio* anymore. That's all. I find out about newer bands making this kind of music, on a regular basis, on the "Sea of Tranquility" UA-cam channel. Good music didn't die in the '80s or '90s. You just have to be willing to take a little bit of extra time to search for it and find it.
As a lifelong Rush fan, it’s awesome to see other people experiencing the greatness of Rush for the first time. On Rush’s Time Machine Tour when they played Moving Pictures in it’s entirety, they recorded a live DVD of the show in my hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. I had great seats for the show and it was one of their best! Keep those awesome and genuine reactions coming. RIP NP.
I am glad I went to see Rush on the Time Machine tour and saw this song live, even though they changed a little from the album, I saw them perform this and will never forget it.
Jamel... I cannot begin to thank you enough for your Rush reaction videos. I was fortunate enough to be at “the alignment of the planets”; I was 14 years old in 1974 and lived in Cleveland, Ohio when Donna Halpert (a radio DJ on WMMS, Cleveland’s big rock station) helped break Rush onto the U.S. music scene. First time I saw Mr. Peart play, I knew I had to be a drummer. Unknowingly, he taught me to play as I got to know every nuance of their tracks and played to them daily. Fast forward over 45 years later, and I’m still playing the drums and living by a lot of Neil’s philosophy. Watching your reactions have brought me completely back to those first days of discovering Rush and ALL that initial excitement and fervor. Thank you!!
Neil based this song on the John Dos Passos book U.S.A. Trilogy written in 1938. The Camera Eye was one of the parts of that trio. Dos Passos didn’t use traditional punctuation and sentence structure. It was more of a stream of consciousness. There is a part of that section where Dos Passos convey’s the feeling of an immigrant walking the streets of Manhattan in the small hours of the night feeling the energy of the city and the sense of possibility while also realizing the harsh realities. This newly arrived immigrant felt the power of the city in that night. As he walked the streets he watched the shop window dressers changing out the mannequins in the window displays, the street cleaners working through the night, the drunk bum stumbling down an ally, the grown of a saxophone in the night he wanted to do it all, ride every taxi and walk every street. He felt in that moment he was free. He could be anyone and anything. He felt the power of the city. Rush captures that feeling in both New York and London.
I have so many RUSH related memories....these guys were practically the soundtrack for my early life.....I still get a little teary eyed over some of Neil's playing....The guitar solo in this song is a perfect example of the genius of Alex Lifeson....one of a kind....
I admire your dedication to the Canadian Triumvirate. You are a member of the Rushinati. We have assumed control. "The Camera Eye" is Lifeson at his most sublime.
THANK YOU! None of us are really that different, are we. You made me look at life in a whole new light! No one is free from trial! Everyone has to fight. Each of our struggles are different, but we struggle just the same! Thank you Jamel, Thank you RUSH! I feel less alone now! God Bless!
Sin discusión una de las mejores canciones de Rush e igualmente quizás una de las más subestimadas!! Está canción es otro nivel y te pone en otro nivel espiritualmente y emocionalmente......... gracias RUSH.
Jamel, I can see how much you like the quintessential power trio. They were my favorite band for several years, between '77 - '81 or so. One of my personal faves by them, and a really underrated track is 'In The End,' off of the Fly By Night, LP. Would love it if you could hit that, and, in fact; this one might be the best Album reaction, since it seems you may have only done the title track. Their second LP and the first one with The Professor, and definitely a classic. You might also try doing side B of 2112, since you've reacted to the title track which is the whole of side A. Cheers!
So happy to see you reacting to Rush, again. I adore this track. STILL awaiting reactions to CYGNUS-X1 books 1 and 2, so you're going to have to react to the albums "Hemispheres" and "Farewell to Kings"!! Thanks Jamel. Hugs from Italy 💗🙏🇮🇹😊
This song is such a favorite for me. It seems like Rush in real time. This era of Rush seemed completely organic and unforced. This song starts off as if walking into towards a new day. Rush invites us listeners into their house and lets us look out their windows. And what a view and what wonderful company. I find this to be their most joyous song. Which is saying a lot. My friend Coby leaned a bit toward country music and this was his favorite track off Moving Pictures. It speaks to the widespread appeal of this record. Neil is a great storyteller. The band tell stories with their playing. They paint moving pictures.
I took my son, who was in high school at the time, to see Rush at the SARATOGA PERFORMANCE ARTS CENTER (SPAC) Saratoga, NY. In 2010. They performed the entire Moving Pictures album. Still have the ticket stubs. Tremendous show! Keep the music alive, brother!
30-40 years ago critics, radio, and supposed music fans laughed at us for loving this band. Now, not only are you part of our family of fans around the world....you're a historian and archivist for this band and all the other music you react to. There will not be a trio like this ever again. Thank you and keep it up!
I miss this band. They gave us all so much and seemed to genuinely love each other’s company. Three musicians that generated as rich a live sound that I’ve ever heard- this includes full orchestras. Godspeed Neil.
ALEX HAS ALWAYS BEEN UNDERRATED! The solo in camera eye by Alex is just incredible, POWER WINDOWS is your next rush disk. This was the "end"of a chapter. Lyrics on this are just RUSH!! Thank you my brother...keep it alive
It is a solo that fits perfectly into the mood of the song and every time I hear it sends a shiver down my spine... sublime musically technically spiritually emotionally...love to see Jamals reactions... Keep up the good work Jamal and enjoy discovering the magic...
My all time favorite Rush song. I was lucky enough to have a friend with an older brother when this album came out who made sure to make us listen to it. At 10 years old we knew it was far beyond anything we had heard to that point. One of my life's greatest pleasures was to hear them play it live. So grateful to see you enjoying it the way I do each time. Thank you brother.
I listened to this album constantly during Art Studio during my college days. It was so calming because it reminds me of my latter years of childhood in the Great Northwest!🤗 💖
Was 10 years old in Hamilton Ontario Canada when I saw them the first time. I'm 56 years old now. i miss the concerts at Maple Leaf Gardens. Truly a Canadian treasure that was shared to the rest of the world. Enjoy my friends
If I remember my Rush trivia, the street sounds in the intro are sampled from the original "Superman" movie, which was still quite popular back then. This song is musical brilliance personified. It actually inspired me to take a trip to Manhattan. It was one of the peak experiences of my life.
Indeed it is. It's in the Rush wiki. The NYC crowd noise and honking horns in the first 10-15sec of the track were taken from the "Daily Planet" scene from the first Superman movie (1978). You can find the scene here: ua-cam.com/video/LRbJTs16--4/v-deo.html You can hear "this is it Mac.." ("the daily planet" is edited out) followed by "fresh fruit" repeated a couple of times.
👍 The last of the long format songs they did. I enjoyed hearing this song live with a edit version the video behind Neil made the song even more better thank you for the video always great to hear a fans opinion of great music
The song starts with the sounds of Manhattan streets and ends with the bells of London. Just a detail touch that adds to their artistry. Never going to be duplicated. We are blessed to have lived in the same time as them. I got to see them live 5 times and it was NOWHERE near enough.
If you want suggestions as to what you should listen next from Rush I would have to say these two major albums, *Grace under pressure* and *Power Windows* . These are definitely different from their earlier stuff but it's still the same three guys playing with their immense talent and as artists you can't blame them for NOT doing the same stuff over and over, it's called evolution. They are among my favorite albums and I have a feeling that you will like them too.
Every time I hear Rush I cry. We lost an amazing drummer. Thank god for video, vinyl, dvd for music and live performances. The professor forever in my heart and in the catalog of my youth! 🥰
Remember Niel wrote all of the Lyrics , as well as playing excellent drums. Thanks Jamel for bringing them more popularity because they deserve all the credit that they can get. They are hard working guys
I was blessed to see this tour. In Chicago at the Amphitheater. Max Webster opened up for them! Another Fantastic Canadian band!! Love it man! Thank you.
Incredible creativity by 3 tall souls. Camera Eye is a quintessential Rush song. The opening alone is an epic tale of what’s to come. Music today doesn’t hold a candle to this composition.
Yes, that was Brother Alex you were hearing. He doesn't get his due nearly often enough, but he had an absolutely incredible feel for exactly what every song needed. He was the thread that wove through the fabrics of the rhythm section and the vocals. He held everything together with such virtuosity and elegance.
Others have said it here. This is an incredible song live. It’s one of my favorite songs of all time. Thank you again for listening to Rush. I’m glad you have enjoyed listening to them. I have enjoyed your reaction to the songs and your interpretation of them. Peace out my Brother. ✌️
React to "Countdown" the last song on the Signals album. It is about the first launch of the space shuttle. We met our liaison man, who conducted us safely into the "V.I.P." zone (Red Sector A) in the pre-dawn hours. We were due to play that night in Dallas, so we couldn't wait much longer. Finally they announced that the launch would be scrubbed for that day. Well, we ran for the car, and our daring driver sped off, around the traffic jams, down the median of the highway, and got us to the airport barely in time. The next night we had a show in San Antonio, after which we drove off immediately, clambered into a hired jet, and flew straight back to Florida. This time the launch took place on schedule, and it was SOMETHING!! I remember thinking to myself as we flew back to Fort Worth after a couple days without sleep: "We've got to write a song about this!" It was an incredible thing to witness, truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I can only hope that the song comes even close to capturing the excitement and awe that we felt that morning. - Neil Peart in the Signals tour book
Neil's drumming has a classical feel to it, sort of an orchestral symphony quality. Not your standard 4/4 rock drummer. The placement of his drum fills and the style he creates is what makes the mans drumming so unique. Technical, creative, inspiring, awesome. His lyrics follow this same path of creative inspiration.
I was lucky enough to see Rush perform three times. Each time was so special. I instinctively knew that when this band stopped touring, the world would be less beautiful.
Jamal!!! THANK YOU!!! I KNEW you would LOVE this song!! Geddy's Bass playing and TONE is UFB!! And Neil's quick drum fills are tastefully syncopated and F#%&ing AWESOME!! ( I could never duplicate the part..) Probably my favorite Alex studio Guitar performance! Beautiful lyrics sung beautifully! I just want to give you a big hug brother!!!
Reading the comments here, and from what is obvious is that Rush creates memories, which is true for me and I suspect for our good Jamel here :) No matter when, who or where we are, hearing a first Rush song or album or whatever is memorable. For that they deserve every price there is. Truly legendary
Please have '' Available light " be your next Rush song bro.... Please share this lyrical and musical gem with the world. This is a journey into brother Neil's head and how he viewed life. It's so beautiful and my favourite piece as a 40 year long fan.
Heard the album all the way through when i was 18 in 1981 on its first week of release. I knew it was an instant classic and 40 years later it holds up as true classic.
In the Rush documentary, Jack Black said it best when he said Rush had a great bottle of sauce and no matter how long you held it upside down the sauce just kept coming out. As a diehard Rush fan for 40 + years I have always loved the deeper cuts the best.
Been a fan since I was a young lad (54 now) - hands down this is my favorite RUSH song and Lord knows I've heard all their music and was blessed to see them live more than a few times. lyrically brilliant and musically magical as only RUSH can do. Thank you for the upload! They seem oblivious To a soft spring rain Like an English rain So light, yet endless From a leaden sky
Love Rush, love you and your channel. Did you hear the burp at 10.08 of this video reaction? Warning you will always hear it if you rewind. You can’t un-ring the bell 🔔. You will hear talking right after it, there’s many different rumors of what is being said, personally I think he says “ it’ll work out “ in reference to the burp being erased during final mixing. Who said that and Who burped? I have no idea, possibly Geddy while recording the vocals and the engineer in the booth replying. Wow that was WAY too much information I’m sorry you guys now I feel like an idiot.
Such a great song. Written as if a poet wrote it. One can argue Neil was a poet. Timeless, never get tired hearing this song. Its what RUSH does, timeless music.
Find the live video of this song when neal is missing a tom drum,he smiles when his drum tech finally gets it placed..but look at the way he has to figure out how to play without it..his mind was racing
I was 15 when this song came jammed to back then, played it a million times and it just never gets old, this just absolutely one the best songs to listen to and play by Rush.👍🏾👍🏾
What made Rush so great for me was wondering what insane riffs they would come up with next. Every track this band did will stand the test of time. I'm so glad I was alive at the same time that this band existed. Neil you were a big part of this greatness. RIP and thank you. There will never be another band like Rush ever! They are one in a googooplex!
Not sure one can say they are a lover of music and not think this is an masterpiece in writing, composing and performing...Rush ascended to this level of recording a handful of times imo (Natural Science, Xanadu, Cygnus X-1, Red Barchetta, Necromancer, Jacob's Ladder, La Villa). I"ve listened 250+ times to CEye since 1983 and ALWAYS get the "rush" of hearing it anew. Mesmerizing!!!
He did the Necromancer and Fountain of Lamneth. Check it out. I wouldn’t say it’s their most prog. But it as early 1975 Rush- it was the first album to give a hint of the progressive rock music that was to come. So yea I could say it was their first Prog album. It had a whole one song take up a whole side in “ Fountain of Lamneth”. I think though their previous two albums Fly By Night and their first Album had vestiges of Prog rock. Check out “ Before and After” on their debut album and “ Beneath, Between, and Behind” on Fly By Night.
There are very few recordings in history where a band can pull off an album like Moving Pictures. And they can probably be counted on one hand. There are no bad tracks on here and this song in my opinion is absolutely rated number one. This is a phenomenal writing. For these three guys to pull this out of thin air is just absolutely amazing to me. This was along with everything else they did just so outside of what anybody else was doing at all before during and after 1981. This is such an incredible song. Definitely one of those songs you'll need to listen to about 50 times before you really start hearing what's going on. It is just sooooo good. ALL of them are going off.... and speaking of Alex's solo. It's a great solo but what always hooks me with Alex is the way he can EXIT a solo. This particular one was a prime example! The hoooked note leaving that solo is just absolutely fantastic!!! God I love his playing. He is just absolutely awesome! They all are. Another great review brother Jamal. Thank you! This is one song I could never get sick of hearing....
Jamel...you really should check out RUSH's amazing 80's albums, POWER WINDOWS and HOLD YOUR FIRE. Power Windows is especially stacked and they all really liked that one; Big Money, Grand Designs, Middle Town Dreams...ect...Dont be put off by the "80s keyboard era" comments (keyboards? Geddy's BEST bass playing is on those two albums!). Its some of their best music...you will love it, guaranteed! They are all in their prime!
This is pure example of why we all must appreciate Rush and be thankful for. Rush never conformed to the record company requests and after 2112 were left alone to create their own music, no matter how weird it was and the result of an artist or group of artists is that we are fortunate to get masterpieces like this song. It makes me wonder how many other great artists never got to show their true art in their prime because they caved to the pressures and wants of the suits. Such a shame… thank you Rush. Peace and kindness to you all.

Oh how right you are. Their shows were something else entirely. It's not a lie to say that I left every venue which was graced with their presence as a person changed for the better. I don't say this to 'rub it in' to those less fortunate, but the power of those three musicians live on stage was so unique and special that I doubt anyone could ever replace them.
This was THE song by Rush, for me, that made me a fan for life. I was already a fan, having heard all the hits previously. I was 13, staying over a a friends for the weekend. He just picked up Moving Pictures on LP from Sam The Record Man here in downtown Toronto. We smoked some red hash, completely buzzed out and listened to Side A. Then... flip over to Side B and this song starts up and well, long story short, mind completely blown. The two contrasting stories of New York and London, the insane drumming, guitars, bass, synths, lyrics and vocals completely changed my outlook on music forever. Still can't believe Neil is gone well over one year now but man, they left us imho the most impressive catalog of rock music to date. And for that I am forever grateful 😎
This is one of my favorite RUSH songs. I got to hear them play it live only a few times of the almost 20 live shows i saw them. For whatever reason they rarely played it live.

The bass is just sick in this song. Well, everything is, but the bass is particularly bedridden.
That distorted tone applied to the bass is so gritty! Lots of room for Neil and Alex to expand on this, all the while Geddy throws in tasty melodic licks on bass.
"Bedridden" 🤣

I still revisit and consider the bass….how heavy, how beautiful…..The deepest crunch

The drum sound on this album was the best they achieved! I'm a drummer myself, and I'm still trying to replicate that snare.
Those analog synths... 💯💯💯 I wish everyone understood and appreciated just how friggin awesome Rush is.
I saw them twice, it’s like a three ringed circus trying to watch the three of them preform their mastery!
Dude there just isn’t music like this being made any more...
Tool, dude.
Not for a long time my friend
Few would able to pull it off honestly.
Seventh Wonder, Pagan's Mind, Myrath, and Circus Maximus are all putting out quality proggy metal.
The guitar solo on here man. Ridiculously melodic and yet chaotic.
Thank you Brother Jamel for FINALLY getting to this song!!!!
RIP NP.
The song that on Nov 18, 1983, converted me from casual Rush listener to life-long Rush fanatic.
You went down the RUSH rabbit hole. There’s no turning back.
I am glad I went to see Rush on the Time Machine tour and saw this song live, even though they changed a little from the album, I saw them perform this and will never forget it.
Same, I caught the 2nd show in Lincoln, NE and I am so thankful I did.
Thanks for the reference; gonna look it up.
Good literature is a lost construct in our contemporary environment of social justice wokeism.
@@mrgone658 yup.
I want to be a Rushinati !!! :(
You are Rushinatus.
@@johnburger7098 yaaaaay cheers!!!!
My life is a lie! I thought it was Rushonauts...
@@brandib8465 YES!!! I vote YES!!!
THANK YOU! None of us are really that different, are we. You made me look at life in a whole new light! No one is free from trial! Everyone has to fight. Each of our struggles are different, but we struggle just the same! Thank you Jamel, Thank you RUSH! I feel less alone now! God Bless!
That’s a beneficial take away my friend. You have family in the Rush family.
I was at that show as well.
One of my favorites! Finally saw it live in NY at the SPAC. Its was amazing! When Alex did the solos it was like he was floating above the stage!
With Rush you must pick apart every instrument and hear what is being played. I love that you notice things on an individual instrument basis.
30-40 years ago critics, radio, and supposed music fans laughed at us for loving this band. Now, not only are you part of our family of fans around the world....you're a historian and archivist for this band and all the other music you react to. There will not be a trio like this ever again. Thank you and keep it up!
This was the perfect song to let play all of the way through, and for us to watch you soak it all in! Glad we could share the journey with you!
Such a great comment.
The song interestingly has art references to “ Green and Grey Washes”
3 humans and even better LIVE!
I, LIKE IT!
Sometimes I think Neil Peart learned to play the drums just so people would pay attention to his poetry...
Same with the 🌙
Look to his history……..wrong u are….as long as you are here…..it’s all right
Was 10 years old in Hamilton Ontario Canada when I saw them the first time.
Heard the same about Superman. I like to think he stole it from Rush.
I’m a New Yorker and it really captured the- atmosphere of Manhattan in 1981 at 3 or 4pm amidst the workday flurry of people.
Y grandparents used to live and work in Manhatten so no brainer to me
The song starts with the sounds of Manhattan streets and ends with the bells of London. Just a detail touch that adds to their artistry. Never going to be duplicated. We are blessed to have lived in the same time as them. I got to see them live 5 times and it was NOWHERE near enough.
Such an epic, cinematic song! That was true "Theater of the mind"-music!
chills every damn time.
Bro, there is a great live rendition of this song on UA-cam. From a show in Cleveland, worth a watch!
the whole song is truly an experience, love Rush so much
Every time I hear Rush I cry. We lost an amazing drummer. Thank god for video, vinyl, dvd for music and live performances. The professor forever in my heart and in the catalog of my youth! 🥰
What a great song from a great record. Thanks for this Jamel! I recommend Geddy Lee playing Roundabout live with Yes. You'd probably love that!
Remember Niel wrote all of the Lyrics , as well as playing excellent drums. Thanks Jamel for bringing them more popularity because they deserve all the credit that they can get. They are hard working guys
I love your old school photo Tennessee, tuxedo, awesome.
I was blessed to see this tour. In Chicago at the Amphitheater. Max Webster opened up for them! Another Fantastic Canadian band!! Love it man! Thank you.
Should we tell Jamel about Max Webster / Rush - "Battle Scar" ?
Incredible creativity by 3 tall souls. Camera Eye is a quintessential Rush song. The opening alone is an epic tale of what’s to come. Music today doesn’t hold a candle to this composition.
Rush has the ability to play with each other and not always over each other.
Bullseye 🎯
Yes, that was Brother Alex you were hearing. He doesn't get his due nearly often enough, but he had an absolutely incredible feel for exactly what every song needed. He was the thread that wove through the fabrics of the rhythm section and the vocals. He held everything together with such virtuosity and elegance.
Am I the only one who thinks Alex Lifeson's the most underrated guitarist of all time?
Not at all!
The most underrated song they ever wrote
I recommended Signals for his full album listen. Awesome album.
Never witness launch, but next best thing is listening to count down this on good stereo system!
I still get shivers when I listen to it.
I saw my very first Rush show in December 3 1982 at Nassau Coliseum in NY. I was 15. It was the Signals tour - they played Countdown.
This has and always will be my favourite Rush song. It is flawless, practically perfect.
Well, Geddy did once say that he felt Rush were always striving to be the world's smallest orchestra.
Totally concur!!!!
Heard the album all the way through when i was 18 in 1981 on its first week of release. I knew it was an instant classic and 40 years later it holds up as true classic.
Along with their mastery of music, Rush has the most bohemian lyrics and song themes of any hard rock band I have ever heard.
Rush makes their stories so sonic that the lyrics are just icing on the cake...the blending of both is what makes them all geniuses
In the Rush documentary, Jack Black said it best when he said Rush had a great bottle of sauce and no matter how long you held it upside down the sauce just kept coming out. As a diehard Rush fan for 40 + years I have always loved the deeper cuts the best.
Rocket sauce I think he called it
Been a fan since I was a young lad (54 now) - hands down this is my favorite RUSH song and Lord knows I've heard all their music and was blessed to see them live more than a few times. lyrically brilliant and musically magical as only RUSH can do. Thank you for the upload!
They seem oblivious
To a soft spring rain
Like an English rain
So light, yet endless
From a leaden sky
Watching you hear these songs for the first time is like hearing them for the first time all over again
I Suggest The album Rush- Caress of Steel. As it’s their Most under-rated. And their most Prog-rock album. Die hard fans of Rush love this Album.
I absolutely live this album.
Bastille day is theee most underrated song
He did The Fountain of Lamneth, I believe, and was floored by it.
@@bwianeh considering it's the album opener and their third? single I'd say not. Something for Nothing?
Check out this song live on The Time Machine Tour
Just listened to "Test for echo". Think you'd enjoy that one by Rush. Peace...
Hemispheres
THIS. Every reactor does YYZ. La Villa Strangiato is their true instrumental masterpiece.
My wife's favorite. The live version from year it came out the best. La Villa Strangiatto impresses me far more than other songs that get more credit.
This album got me thru High school and influenced me to become a drummer. Thanks so much for your appreciation for it. Love ya brother

I loved this at my very FIRST Rush concert in 1982 on the Signals tour, AMAZING show and their opening act was Golden Earring...EPIC!!
Another great reaction. It is so sad that we will never be able to see them live 😢
🤘😌🤘😊✌💚
Oh how right you are. Their shows were something else entirely. It's not a lie to say that I left every venue which was graced with their presence as a person changed for the better. I don't say this to 'rub it in' to those less fortunate, but the power of those three musicians live on stage was so unique and special that I doubt anyone could ever replace them.
RUSH has been One of my Favorite Bands since I was 15 Years Old!!! That was 1975,,, but this has always been My All Time Favorite Song!!!
Jamel_AKA_Jamal - Pay attention on what Geddy Lee is doing on bass! He is a genius in his instrument!
More talent in these three guys than all bands in todays music put together.
This is one of my favorite RUSH songs. I got to hear them play it live only a few times of the almost 20 live shows i saw them. For whatever reason they rarely played it live.
