Hello Andy, maybe late with the reply…Rush was always thought of as being very serious, guess because of deep lyrics and epic progressive songs…little by little they would do stuff to prove they were laid back and full of scenes of humor. Some songs live, had intros from Count Floyd (SCTV comedy show), Geddy appeared on Bob and Doug MacKensie’s comedy album…the they would come out to the Three Stooges intro…besides the Dinosaurs on top of Alex’s amps, Geddy’s side of the stage had 3 Chicken Rotisseries. Neil had a Stewie figure on top of one of his stands…one tour Geddy had three dryers in the back, and now and again a crew staff would throw “clothes” in them, then they would get thrown to the crowd, and say “this shirt came from dryer #2”, or something along those lines. 😊
Also, don’t forget to check out Carl Palmers solos from ELP, or ASIA, and anything from Gavin Harrison. Lol
Andrew. I suggest you do “the Greatest Intro Ever” by Rush. The application of how well they run through their songs and how well they all played together is unmatched. Seamless transitions and an almost effortless attack is something to behold. It will give you a sense of just how good they truly were as a band. RIP, Professor. You are sorely misused.

Cream may have had bigger names, Rush is the best 3 piece band the world has ever seen. Years of service, catalog and showmanship, no one else comes close.

That tour had probably his best drum solo. All of them were good, but he hit his stride right there.
IMO, he was THE greatest drummer/percussionist to ever pick up a set of sticks. He always impressed me when he gave tribute who he learned from. As always, RIP to "The Professor".
i luv how towards the end when he's doing the jazz style how he's boppin his head with it.
If you're into drums as percussion may I suggest looking up Aussie drummer Grant Collins , the absolute best drummer you've never heard of... He's the only guy that I've ever seen play 4 different time signatures at once, 17 pedals on his kit, amazing....

Being a Toronto lad, I saw Rush many times. They were our Hometown heroes! Gone too soon. I also got to see Carl Palmer on about eight occasions and Buddy Rich in Miami Beach at The Fountain Bleu, just once. I'm truly blessed.
Trust me it's not just your opinion. I was talking to a co-worker/friend at work (he's older) abouth the greatest drummer of the 40's and 50's and that was Gene Krupa. 60's was Bonzo and the 70's on was Neil. I was a late bloomer to Rush (blame my brother) but damn they were the greatest

We knew what we had.... and miss what we lost .. One thing about Rush a great band is that they knew their drummer was Iconic and showcased him after the first few years of touring and especially towards the latter half. More than just a Drum Solo
Neil was and STILL IS, and will forever be The Professor! These guys made time signatures that never existed, and made them work!!! All thanks to Neil Peart!!
Rush did only one concert in Mexico City (October 2002) and I remember all mics turn off and we can only see the light show and hear how hard Neil was hitting the hell out of the drum kit. It was amazing to hear the drums in an open 70 thounsand venue w/o any amplification!!! That man can really play hard. Long live to The Professor

Fender sent him that bass, and he doesn't really play fretless so he was just noodling in the studio when he came up with that riff. The producer was secretly recording it, and when he played it back he said, "Geddy, that's killer, you should make a song out of it." So Geddy and Neil recorded it and Alex came in later and put guitar to it. It's the only song Geddy ever played fretless on to my knowledge.

Alex's grandson at the time loved dinosaurs. The stage crew were always adding things. Oh by the way Alex would love all your Dad jokes as he is quite well known for them. The guys in Rush especially Neil were always excited about and kept up with the newest technology.
The piece Malignant Narcissism was created when Geddy was noodling around with a fretless bass between takes at the studio. The producer unbeknownst to Geddy was recording it.

They'd already finished laying down the instrument tracks for the album: Geddy was recording vocals. The bass in the studio version is recorded through a vocal mic.
Neil's full kit was already packed away, but he still had a small practice kit, so that's what this song uses. They liked the groove so called Alex back to the studio to record guitars.
@@LeviRamsey I think they sent Alex the drum and bass tracks, and Alex added the guitar using the studio at his house. Just amazing though what Geddy can create just picking it up and noodling around with it for a little bit.
At about the same time, Geddy started putting up old vending machines and kitchen equipment up on stage to replace his shrinking bass amps. He wanted to fill the space with something, and found some old vending machines somewhere and thought "what the hell". Alex decided to decorate his amps with dinosaurs. On later tours, you can see three old dryers churning on stage.
Also, if you haven't read it yet, I would really suggest Geddy's memoir. Just finished it. It's got a lot of really great insight on the band and the different phases they went through. Definitely worth it!

The amount of perfectly executed rudimental sticking patterns he displayed can only be fully appreciated by people that have played the drums for a long time. The precision Neil played with is unmatched by anyone…until the ones he inspired. The beauty of his art is that the inspiration he left behind will be felt for a very long time. RIP to a wonderful man and wonderful musician.

Agreed. I recently posted on the same subject that he is one of the only drummers to ever have perfect meter. Which had a lot to do with the fact that Rush was as good live as they are in studio, musically. The man was a human metronome.
He played only singles comfortably, which is why he had to resort to sampled background cabaret tracks and tons of tom sizes to get some variation. Most overrated drummer of all time IMO.

I heard a lot of shout outs in there, Max Roach the drum also waltzes, a few different Buddy Rich pieces, a little moon, Bonham and Ringo. Neil was the real deal and like most drummers my age and under he was one of my biggest influences.
Rush was old style hard rock. Then embraced keyboards and leaned progressive/fusion for a while. They even had a quasi rap style interlude in one of their songs. They’ve always changed and evolved as time went on
Never ending articulation at a furious pace. That is Neil Peart.

Ah Malignant Narcissism, where you got to see how all that touring with Primus influenced Rush.
Also, if you haven't heard Max Roach's "The Drum Also Waltzes," that's what Neil's inspired by in the part of the solo where his feet are in 3/4 and his hands are doing whatever the hell they want.
I came for the Neil peart drum solo but I stayed for Getty Lee absolutely slaying that bass. God damn that guys underrated
He is called the Professor because he did classes at every concert the evolution of the drums and brought the older music to the younger generations.
That's not what Geddy says or what Neil said. Instead, he was called "The Professor" because in the early 80s he resembled the professor on Gilligan's Island. The name fits for other reasons, of course, but that wasn't the origin of the name.
Neil was really special wasn’t he.

The first animation I did for Neil and Rush…behind him during the jazz segment. So much fun to do…
I'm not a drummer, just a bass player, but man I swear Neil always seems to have the absolute best road crew for tuning and setting up the mics for his drums. They are always just so perfect sounding.
During one of their concerts, the stage hands stood behind the amps by Alex and held up dinosaurs, making them bop to the music. Alex did a bit of a double-take when he saw them and got Geddy to come over and take a look, both of them laughing. The stage hands gradually expanded them after that. During a show, the camera for their large video screen zoomed in on them and the caption appeared "These dinosaurs aren't the only ones on stage", which gave the band a good laugh.
Each member of Rush just oozes authenticity and the celebration of the individual. Love those guys.

not sure if you're aware, but Neil's bit for all his solos over the years is where his solos are titled "The Drummer" in various languages. De Slagwerker is Dutch this time. Also, got to see this live, and boy I loved it so much
I remember seeing Buddy Rich perform on TV in the 60's. A really great drummer but when I saw him on the Johnny Carson Tonight Show just after Moving Pictures was released, he was really struggling and you could tell the drugs got to him. Johnny had called him over for a mini interview after and one of his questions to Buddy was, "are you still the best?" Buddy started to answer, "well there's this guy Neil," and right then, Buddy was cut off and they went to a commercial. So I'm sure of who Buddy was going to talk about. That was frustrating because I wanted to hear more.

Neil Peart turned 18 in September 1970. Are you sure that interview was in the 60s? If so I doubt Neil would have been too famous at that age...
@@nicholasvinenNic, I saw Buddy in the 60s when at the top of his game.Then I said Buddy appeared again AFTER Moving Pictures was released (in 1980) When Buddy struggled with his solo perfomance and mentioned Niel after it.
what gets me as how Neil bridged the gap between instruments, not only with his musicality on the tuning of his kit or his use of programmable pads and knowing what notes he's using and being able to write music as well as lyrics. He made it to the point where even other musicians who don't play his instruments and drums are instruments. people know his name and why he was called The Professor. The beauty of Rush, besides the 3 of them being all world talent on their respective instruments, is that the changed their sound in every decade. Every decade was a different. They constantly evolved up until their last record. They embraced the past and embraced technology. They are the Holy Trinity for a reason. RIP NP

Nice dad jokes. I saw a Snakes And Arrows concert and was amazed at Geddy playing foot pedal bass, keyboard and singing. Alex and Neil were phenomenal also. I'd have to say the most talented band in the world. When you asked if the stage was moving, I remembered the drum platform rotating 180 degrees and Neil switching kits in the middle of a solo, but I don't think it moved side to side like that camera movement makes it look. I loved when Buddy Rich would come onto the Tonight Show when Carson hosted it and have a little bit of a drum competition with the band's drummer (can't remember his name but he was good). There was an interview with Neil about how he was either playing with or watching Rich and Kruppa and how they influenced him to change his grip on the stick to a jazz style. You can see it in this solo.

RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR!

I saw this tour in an outdoor amphitheater and the sound quality of his drums was INCREDIBLE!! Best I’ve ever heard in an outdoor setting, or quite possibly, in general. Especially during his solo of course. It was like listening on headphones in your living room.

There’s a lot of bands using v-drums, but they make a point of not making it obvious to crowds, because crowds fear change.
Look at the current Pantera tour, every drum is triggered with a Roland TD50x for front of house, which Benante doesn’t hide, but they definitely don’t draw attention to it. Neil drew attention to his V-drums
What always fascinates me about Neil Peart is how effortless he made his solos look! He NEVER looks like he is at his limit. Very little if an facial expression, just a look of ultimate concentration. The greatest of all time! RIP Neil Peart
Everything I've ever read about Neil, and everything he wrote in his own books, tells me that he would love your dad jokes. I think you nailed it on the analysis of how he and his bandmates embraced technology while paying homage to the past and all who inspired them. Nice job.
Every time I watched and listened to his solos in person…what he did and his sound just made me say “he’s not human!” That’s how incredible his sound and his playing really was! He was absolutely incredible!!! Loved and missed by so many! RIP Professor
More than just a drummer. More than just a drummer in a band. Neil lead the way for many and held the torch for all you budding drummers. He has now handed the torch over to you youngsters to take it on its journey into the future. Listen, learn and be humble.
Neil peart had trigger pads incorporated within his drum set that produced the horn shots you here at the start of the big band section at the end of the solo

This tour was the first time I got to see them live after allot of years being a fan. This was a departure form Neil's normal solo's that he had done from previous tours and subsequent tours. I feel this is one of his better ones. This was about halfway through a 3 hour show. Was absolutely fantastic. and he added more cowbell. RIP Professor. Geddy was crushing all the bass lines. Alex is just a monster that is so underappreciated. Great reaction. keep them coming.
I was lucky enough to see Rush 17 times and I was never disappointed. Peart was and still is the greatest rock drummer of all time.
Maestro's - all 3. Neil's solo's were essentially a spiritual awakening and to see him live was something I was grateful to have experienced.

This teared me up only because this great man has passed. He left evidence of his signature attempts to always improve, always be curious. Miss him dearly.
There is a difference between a drummer and a musician and being a Neil Peart fan since my childhood, hearing every solo, this is my favorite showcasing his musicianship. He was in the musician zone here more than any other solo. I know people like the Frankfort solo more but this is his best in my opinion.
Little tidbit I learned recently; Neil wasn't called "The Professor" because of his drum mastery. Somewhere, pre 1990, Alex and Geddy started calling Neil "The Professor" because his demeanor was akin to The Professor on Gilligan's Island. That nickname predates "Bubba", too. :)

I'm completely blessed I got to see them once for my first concert ever during their R40 tour. I was 13 at the time and I believe it altered the course of my life and how I grew up through my teen years
I got lucky their tours coincided with ship's movement while I was in the West Coast
There will never be another drummer like Neil Peart. He grew in his craft throughout his career and remained extremely humble. By the Snakes and Arrows tour, he had started studying the great big band drummers Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich) and you can see that in this solo. He also embraced electronic drums and pads as soon as they were available (definitely an early adopter).

I saw this tour in Mansfield, Massachusetts. Sadly, it was the last time I ever saw them live in person. I missed the last tour. Thanks for the memory. My best friend had said she did not like Rush. But she had these great seats and came along only to love the show. They really were awesome live. On stage for 3 hours. When young, I'd see opening bands. But these tours later in their careers had no opening bandsThank you for stirring up great memories 👏 ❤❤ ❤ .

I'm not saying anyone will be the next Rush, but the world wants another live band that knows what the fuck they are doing. The demand is HUGE. Cmon, next generation! Wake up!
Peart is so huge that Geddy kind of becomes an amalgam of bass and rhythm guitar both driving the riffs forward. Then Lifeson is like the constant whipped cream on the Sunday. This is a different dynamic than most rock bands with lesser drummers.
I really miss Niel and had the privilege to see Rush twice in the 90s when they were really in their prime, by far the two best concerts I've ever seen! Niel's reach knows no bounds in drumming, his influence can be heard anywhere. RIP Niel ❤
Keep in mind, the song Malignant Narcissism was written and recorded for the album on a 4 piece set. And that fretless bass Geddy is playing is the Jaco signature model. The studio video exists, rhe filmed that making of that album.

So in the 1970s they sent a record into space on the Voyager mission. If they ever do that again they should just send a Rush Album with a Neal solo.

I had the privilege of seeing Rush on this tour(as well as being in attendance for the time machine live from Cleveland performance and six other times in the past). As a drummer myself watching this simply moves me to tears.
I love that he is not just doing an incredible show of rudiments but that in the choice of which Tom, cymbal, he uses the actual pitch to carry a tune independent of the other guys. Hope you know what I mean.
The melodic parts are extremely enjoyable almost hypnotic.

I’ve seen Neil’s solos twice in person. I’ve watched every solo video, I have the live album solos on the albums. This is the best one I’ve heard/seen. Killer! Rest in Peace, Neil.
Not just Mr. Peart, but all of RUSH changed with the times. Rush/Zep.. Zep/Rush... The two best.

Saw him/them four times in 78-79. Tightest band in the whole damn land.
Besides the dinosaurs, there are a couple of scenes where you can check out Alex's groupies! If you check out his pedalboard, you'll see a bunch of barbie dolls lined up there, many of whom would be holding up signs (post-it notes) with stuff like, "Alex, you were my grandmother's favorite!" It was because of Rush's concerts being something of a "sausage-fest," and the roadies thought it would be nice to see Alex with groupies.

ELP (Emerson, Lake and Palmer) was the first band I was ever really into. Then when I visited my cousin Jeff in Ohio for Xmas, he played 2112 for me while getting high in a basement, and my live changed forever... Collectively, Rush and ELP are the two best Rock trio’s in world history ! And I hope Alex and Geddy get together, write song songs and play live in concert soon, even if they don’t under the “Rush” brand.. Love you guys ! #RIPTheProfessor
Love the breakdown of this and look forward to more RUSH!! Here is an interesting detail I found about Neil....Neil Peart “was brilliant enough to skip two grades, starting high school at 12. He began drum lessons, practicing for a full year without an actual kit.” Even the story how he replaced the drummer for Rush, becoming their drummer, so many amazing things about him!
The thing I like the most is Neil's musical and melodic approach mixed in with motifs, themes, and composition. I'm glad we had him as long as we did.
Rush has carried me through so many decades of life. I have learned so much from the high quality comments in this video. One of the few women posting a comment here, Rush is by far the best trio band ever in this world. Rush means the world to me. And what do you call a lesbian dinosaur? Lickalotapus. 😂. RIP Professor. May Rush legacy continue to grow for generations.

I have seen well over 50 Pearl solos, all of which leave me spellbound; however, this solo may indeed be the most illustrative of Neil’s almost fantastical range of talent, showmanship and creativity on the kit. Always in absolute control of his extraordinary talents, Neil never fails to surprise and mesmerize the viewer. There is a reason that he is perhaps the most highly respected and influential drummer in the rock/prog canon. In short, a drummer’s drummer. RIP, Neil. We shall not see your like again.
Neil was the absolute best drummer, ever, period. And now he's gone. The way he used new tech and new styles so well, and combined them with old styles, just absolutely incredibly well executed. You'll never find anyone better.
Wish they would have used that camera behind Neil for the whole drum solo.
Oy veh … Geddy’s bass lines on this tune are just incredible. He remains a very underrated bass player. As for Peart ..

I would hardly call Geddy “underrated”. Well known as one of the best. That would be like calling Neil underrated.
If any of them is underrated its Alex. The other two are generally considers to be among the best or even the best.
Plenty of drummers can copy. But the best drummers acknowledge he was their influence and don't copy, they come up with their own. BTW, his double top hat with a tamborine on top came from Bonham. As for the jazz part of his solo, a tribute to Buddy Rich, who had a small drum set.

The best drummer I ever had the pleasure of seeing. Saw them nine times over the years. First time on Caress of Steel tour. Last on the Time Machine tour.

That triplet ostinato is also used in the beginning section of the solo, making his independence absolutely incredible.
Many people--myself included--would consider "the Professor" among the top 3 rock drummers, if not THE top drummer, of all time.
That being said, Neil Peart ALWAYS kept learning new things. He would keep refining his technique, and kept taking lessons, because he wanted to improve, and become better.
Neil was definitely NOT a dinosaur.
