I’m a 58 year old black man and I’ve been into Rush since Moving Pictures came out! ... I LOVE their musicality and as a hobby drummer, Neil has always been at the top ... BUT this is the first time I’ve read all the lyrics of this song! I’m falling love all over again!

One of the many things about Rush I love, is when Neil's lyrics was commenting the times that they were living in. And when we read these decades later we realise those lyrics are totally timeless, and often are relevant today as well.

Neil Peart, the drummer, is a master lyricist. He wrote all of their lyrics from when he started in their band in summer of 1974, after they made their first album with their first drummer John Rutsey.

    • @Whirlybird88

In the December 1985 Rush Backstage Club newsletter, drummer and lyricist Neil Peart said:
Tom Sawyer was a collaboration between myself and Pye Dubois, an excellent lyricist who wrote the lyrics for Max Webster. His original lyrics were kind of a portrait of a modern day rebel, a free-spirited individualist striding through the world wide-eyed and purposeful. I added the themes of reconciling the boy and man in myself, and the difference between what people are and what others perceive them to be-namely me, I guess.

I remember buying this brand new the week it was released....on cassette! LOL. The lyrics never fail to amaze the woke younger audiences once they hear Rush. Like some of the "big" words they use I doubt anyone has ever used in a song before. They are such amazing storytellers and their music requires some real thought to understand the messages. The way they examine things so deeply like life, the universe, existence, the human condition, whether it be in our world or an alternate one, or another time. I'm always amazed.

@@brettmarlar4154 Hold Your Fire is the culmination of their progression. They kind of started over again on Presto and slowly reverted backwards away from grand orchestration and production to whatever you want to call their later album's styles.

    • @brettmarlar4154
      @brettmarlar4154 3 роки тому

@@evankeal Hold Your Fire, was a turning point of their career. Not the beginning of a "devolution" or "regression". They did strip things back a bit for Presto, only because they wanted to shift the focus back to their core instruments. There were still plenty of over dubs like layering of guitar parts, and the keyboards were still very present, just pushed back from the forefront. They became more of a secondary support for the guitar as opposed to the other way around. Alex would even star adding Mandola and Bazuki to add different textures as opposed to synths and effects. If anything, this freed Alex up to play more, complex and challenging parts; thus allowing them to regain some of that raw edge and intensity that they had lost from the 70's and blend it with the sophistication gained in the 80's. A song like "Driven" wouldn't have happened if they were still beholden to all the synths and sequencers. We definitely wouldn't have gotten the instrumentals since then.

    "Red Sector A" - holocaust
    "The Pass" - Suicide
"Manhatten Project" - The 'A' Bomb
"Losing it" - Losing ones skill/talent through aging
"The Garden" - How one should live life in general (this is on many a fans funeral list)
Red Barchetta - story of dystopian future when cars are banned (similar theme as 2112, but condensed)
Cygus X-1 Book 1 & 2 (must be done together really) - function of the brain told as a sci-fi type story
…. and many others … these are ones where Lyric videos useful

"Vital Signs" closes out Rush's seminal album, Moving Pictures. While "Tom Sawyer", which opens the album, tells of where humans are, " Vital Signs" tells us to where we should aspire as empathetic beings. Neil Peart (drums, percussion) is the main lyricist for Rush, and his co-band mates, Geddy Lee (bass, vocals, keyboards, Taurus foot pedals) and Alex Lifeson (guitars, Taurus foot pedals) write the music. And that's the entire band!! Just THREE guys. Also remember this album was released in 1981.
    If you can't tell, I'm a huge Rush fan!! And I'm a nerd!! 💜💜💜

Saying they speak in code is brilliant. Kudos for that. They put a lot of important truth into their songs but they put it in the abstract language of poetry and metaphor so you have to kind of work for it. It's not very transparent, although every so often it is.

Coming from my perspective as an English teacher inspired to do his job by Neil Peart, and a decades long guitar hobbyist who writes lyrics occasionally for my own music, Neil made the strongest case for why a drummer with writing abilities (working closely with the vocalist, of course), should be a band's primary lyricist.
